Poster: El Tigre Saltó y Mató, Pero Morirá...Morirá [The Tiger Jumped and Killed but It Will Die...It Will Die]

[Havana, Cuba: S.i., 1973]. Film poster for Cuban director Santiago Alvarez's 16-minute documentary film depicting the injustices commited in Chile in the 1970's under the fascist dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. It featured music by Chilean folk singers Violeta Parra and Victor Jara; shortly after the Chilean coup in 1973, Jara was arrested, tortured, and shot to death with 44 bullets from machine gun fire, his body later thrown out into the street of a shantytown in Santiago. Designed by Cuban artist Eduardo Muñoz Bachs, prominently featuring a cartoonish image of Pinochet, whose nose is puncturing a guitar painted the colors of the Chilean flag. Not found in OCLC. Original poster, silkscreened in black, red, and blue on off-white stock, measuring 51cm x 76cm (20.25" x 30"). Professionally linen-backed, with expert touch-up along lower margin and a small area near the center image; Near Fine.

Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi, altrimenti detti Germania Inferiore. Antwerpen: Plantijn, 1581.

"Folio, geb. in half perkament, (20)+558+(18) p., ill. Guicciardini Illustratos 5). Dit exemplaar heeft variant B.

        Cursed! (aka Always Hard!)

Barbizon 1973 - LINDA MITCHELL (DEAN KOONTZ penname) - CURSED! (originally published under the title "ALWAYS HARD!" under the Gracie Amber penname by Cameo in 1970 - which I have verified as I own both books), published by Barbizon in 1973. This book is one of a number of 30 or so books that Dean Koontz wrote for Cameo books early in his career under various pennames (like Ann Griffin or Leonard Chris), and one book he actually published under his own name (Bounce Girl). Dean Koontz has since disavowed and otherwise denied having ever written such books (besides Bounce Girl which was published under his own name and the Leonard Chris book "Hung"), but the evidence is undisputable: The Library of Congress confirms that Gerda Ann Koontz (Dean's wife) holds the copyrights to this book. "Gracie" is one of the five names listed in the dedication of the gothic romance "Demon Child" (which Koontz wrote under the penname of Deanna Dwyer). All five of the first names listed in the dedication of "Demon Child" have turned out to be pseudonyms that Dean had used for this particular "Adult" literature. In an article written by Dean Koontz entitled "Dean's Drive" in the sci-fi fanzine Energumen #8 (6/71), Dean Koontz admitted to writing 30 of these books in 1970 (including "Share The Warm Flesh" - this book), along with Pig Society and The Underground Lifestyles Handbook (both of which were also published by the same publisher, Cameo books in 1970). One of the titles that Dean Koontz admits to having written ("Thirteen and Ready") was written under the penname of Ann Griffin. In an early sci-fi fanzine, Beabohema #8 (1970), Dean Koontz again talked about writing these books. The authors initials (A.G.) are simply Dean's wife's initials in reverse. One of the Ann Griffin cameo books "Protest Ball," lists the author's address as Harrisburg, Pennsylviania (where Dean and his wife were living in 1970). Finally, in Dean Koontz's writing how-to book "How to Write Popular Fiction" (1972), he refers to these books and specifically to the Ann Griffin penname. Book has vertical spine creasing, no spine lean, cover creases, removed price sticker color cover tear, no soiling or staining to covers, no former owner markings or used bookstore markings inside, no missing pages, some creased page corners (looks like poor handling/storage), some edge wear. Overall a VG book of this rare 1970s Dean Koontz pen name book. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Dean Koontz 1st printing hardcover/paperback/magazine appearances up for sale.         Cherryburn Prints: Volume I. Discovered Subjects I to X (and) Volume II. Discovered Subjects XI to XX + 2 additional signed prints, each housed in portfolio cases as issued.

Chicago: The Cherryburn Press, . First edition of limited issue. 1973 - Pp. (vol. 1): (5, title page, subjects by discovery, prints without a press); pp. (vol. 2): (2, title page, addendum for Volume II) + 22 linoleum-block prints in colors on Japanese paper, each tipped into a plain paper mat with the printed roman numbers of each print at bottom inside corner; the plates are loose in portfolio as issued. Original hand-made rag-paper wrappers for each volume is printed in red and housed in the publisher's cream-color linen box over charcoal paper-covered boards with red ribbon ties, spine and front cover with red printed title labels, folio (15 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches). This edition was limited to 20 copies only. Middleton describes the creative process: "Start by spotting several blobs of water color paint, in different hues, on a piece of heavy tracing paper, located well within the whole area; then, subject the paper to quick horizontal movement in several directions. Repeat the process one or more times. The result will be a mass of crisscrossing irregular width lines and solid shapes". This process allowed Middleton to "discover recognizable material, usually in the form of birds, animals, fish, flowers and human profiles, appearing in plausible environments." Middleton was an American book designer, painter, and type designer. Born in Glasgow, Scotland he came to Chicago in 1908 where he studied at the School of the Art Institute. He joined the design department of the Ludlow Typograph Company in 1923 where he served as director from 1933-71. In 1944 he began operating a private press, The Cherryburn Press, producing many fine press editions. This copy of 'Cherryburn Prints' came from grandson of R. Hunter Middleton. This copy has two extra prints, the first is dated 1973 and bears the initials RHM, and the second extra print is a large format watercolor (10 1/2 x 8 inches) printed on the stationary of R. Hunter Middleton. Each extra print is added at the beginning of the prints in each portfolio. No ownership marks. The linen on the spine so the first portfolio case is slightly tanned, there is edge rear to the rear board of the first portfolio and to the inner cardboard ridge, the wrappers, printed text and color prints inside each portfolios are bright and clean, the red ribbon ties have been renewed for both portfolios; a tight copy in near fine condition.

Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ?72.

Arrow Books, San Francisco 1973 - First edition of the author's third book. Octavo, original black boards. Signed by Hunter Thompson, subject, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter and the illustrator, Ralph Steadman. Fine in a near fine first issue price-clipped dust jacket with the white boarder around the photograph of Thompson and McGovern on the back panel. A unique example with this collection of signatures. Forty years after its original publication, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 remains a cornerstone of American political journalism and one of the bestselling campaign books of all time. Hunter S. Thompson’s searing account of the battle for the 1972 presidency—from the Democratic primaries to the eventual showdown between George McGovern and Richard Nixon—is infused with the characteristic wit, intensity, and emotional engagement that made Thompson "the flamboyant apostle and avatar of gonzo journalism" (The New York Times). Hilarious, terrifying, insightful, and compulsively readable, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 is an epic political adventure that captures the feel of the American democratic process better than any other book ever written. "Thompson should be recognized for contributing some of the clearest, most bracing and fearless analysis of the possibilities and failures of American democracy in the past century" (Chicago Tribune).         Federico Fellini and Magali Noël on the set of "Amarcord"

N.p.: N.p., 1973. Vintage double weight silver gelatin still photograph of Federico Fellini and actress Magali Noël on the set of "Amarcord," taken by photographer Patrick Morin. With Morin's stamp on the verso, and importantly, the stamp of the Swedish Magazine Service for whom Morin was working, dated August 3, 1973. A vintage print of what has become one of the most iconic images of Fellini at his peak. One of the greatest directors of women in the history of world cinema, at the center of his element, projecting confidence and focus, and the subject of female adoration. Noël was a favorite of Fellini, appearing in "La Dolce Vita" (1960), "Satyricon" (1969), and "Amarcord" (1973). She also appeared in a number of other important foreign films, including "Du rififi chez les hommes" (Jues Dassin, 1955), "Les Grandes Man?"uvres" (René Clair, 1955)) "Boulevard" (Julien Duvivier, 1960), and "Z" (Costa Gavras, 1969). Morin was one of the first high-end celebrity photographers, capturing classic images of figures including Charles De Gaulle, Erich von Stroheim, Grace Kelly, Jean Cocteau, Kirk Douglas, Gina Lollobrigida, Anouk Aimee, and Marcello Mastroianni. He is perhaps best known for staging (along with Roger Vadim) a scandalous half-naked-in-Cannes image of Brigitte Bardot on the beach, before the term "paparazzi" was even coined. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 7.5 x 11.25 inches. Two tiny surface artifacts, else Fine.

IF I DIE IN A COMBAT ZONE - INSCRIBED

New York: Delacorte Press, 1973. First Edition. First Printing. Near Fine in a Very Good+ jacket. Touch of faint foxing to upper edge of textblock and to the cloth on the upper board edges. The edges of the olive-colored boards and endpages are faintly discolored, as usual, else a sharp copy. The jacket is unclipped, with three closed tears and some associated creasing along the upper edge, along with a single tear near the base of the spine. Presents well overall, with the lettering on the spine panel perfectly bright and absent the usual toning. This copy is inscribed by O'Brien on the front endpage in an early hand: "To Mr. and Mrs. Larson, With best wishes and warm regards. Many thanks for buying it! Tim O'Brien." While O'Brien has signed plenty, early inscriptions like this are indeed desirable. An attractive copy of the author's first novel, a cornerstone of Vietnam War literature.

        To Be of Use

[Berkeley]: Maidu Press. [c. 1973]. "A Maidu Free Poem" broadside of the title poem of Piercy's 1973 collection. This version has one small change from the book version published in 1973 (there were several more changes in later versions). The edition of this broadside is unstated, but the broadside is marked as "1/ ." The only other Maidu Free Poems we are aware of are a 1971 Gary Snyder broadside, "Swimming Naked in the Yuba River," and "I Saw the Green Yuba Flow" by Franco Beltrametti. The Snyder was done in an edition of 200 copies; OCLC records two copies of the Beltrametti. The Maidu Press was the creation of two of Snyder's neighbors and friends, Steve Sanfield and Dale Pendell, both of them poets living on the San Juan Ridge, as Snyder was. This broadside reproduces calligraphy by Snyder, according to the Snyder bibliography. The presence of a blacked out mistake in the last line of the first stanza and the backward limitation (the copy number specified but not the number of copies, rather than vice versa) combine to suggest this is a trial copy or an unused or proof copy. We have no evidence that the edition was ever done: the Piercy bibliography lists no Maidu Press publication and OCLC shows no copies being held in institutional libraries. A scarce, virtually unknown collaboration between Piercy and Snyder, both of them major American poets of the postwar era, and both associated with the counterculture of the 1960s and beyond. 8-1/2" x 11", on heavy orange paper. Fine. First Edition. No Binding.
