FEAR AND LOATHING ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL '72 - SIGNED BY RALPH STEADMAN AND GEORGE S. MCGOVERN

San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books, 1973. First Edition. New. First Printing. A Fine copy in a Near Fine jacket, with the original price of $7.95 intact. The book appears unread, and the second state jacket is a crisp example, showing absolutely none of the fading to the red and blue colored skull on the spine, a typical problem with this title. Other than a few areas of pinpoint rubbing to the corners and bottom edge, the jacket is as nice as we've ever seen. This copy has been signed by both the illustrator, Ralph Steadman and the subject, former Senator and U.S. Presidential candidate George S. McGovern. Steadman has signed via a specially decorated bookplate, which he affixed to this copy himself at an October 31, 2006 event, where he could not sign books due to a severe arthritis flare-up. McGovern signed the half-title page at a recent event. We presented a few copies of this book to him, and after a brief conversation about his friendship with Thompson, he mentioned to us that these were the only copies he could remember anyone bringing to one of his book signings. McGovern ran against, and lost to, Richard Nixon (an arch-nemesis of Thompson's), and Thompson was one of the few journalists who stuck with McGovern throughout his campaign, resulting in a lifelong friendship. While Thompson is almost universally revered for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it is far from his best writing. Campaign Trail '72 remains one of the best pieces of political writing written during the 20th century, and along with Thompson's journalistic pieces in The Great Shark Hunt, stands as some of his very best work. A superior copy of book which is almost always found well-worn, signed by both the illustrator/jacket designer and the subject. Publicity material from both events are included with this book.

ORIGINAL DRAWING FROM BUKOWSKI'S 'NOTES OF A DIRTY OLD MAN' COLUMN

Los Angeles: Los Angeles Free Press, [1973]. Single sheet of 8.5 X 11 inch stock, with artwork rendered in pen and black ink. Hint of toning to extremities, else Fine. An original drawing by Charles Bukowski, which ran with his 'Notes of a Dirty Old Man' columns in the November 9-15, 1973 issue of the Los Angeles Free Press. The L.A. Free Press (or "Freep," as it was called) ran from 1964-1978, an important counter-culture publication which eventually had an enormous weekly circulation rate. Once L.A.'s 'Open City' newspaper folded in 1969, the Freep picked up Bukowski's 'Notes of a Dirty Old Man' column and ran with it until 1976. Bukowski's 'Notes' column was likely the single largest contributing factor to the spread of his literary fame, as well as his notoriety for being a hard-drinking, hard-living character. This drawing depicts a room scene where a large-breasted woman in garters and heels is sitting seductively on a chair and ottoman, while a man next to her nervously looks on; the drawing is appropriately captioned "Oh, my God!" The drawing came from the personal collection of L.A. poet-publisher Michael C. Ford, a former Freep staffer to whom Bukowski gave these to at the end of his tenure at the newspaper. While Bukowski did hundreds of drawings throughout his career, very few come to the market, and fewer still have seen publication as this one has. A wonderful drawing which succinctly channels the author's 'Dirty Old Man' personna.

        Revolutionary Petunias & Other Poems

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. (1973). First. First edition. A trifle rubbed at the base of the spine, else fine in very near fine dustwrapper with minimal soiling. Howard Zinn was a historian, playwright, and social activist who was very involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Author's third book, and second collection of poetry.         Cetology. A Systematized exhibition of the whale in his broad genera: natural history excerpts from "Moby Dick" edited and illustrated by Ronald Keller

New York: The Red Angel Press. 1973. Unique copy, bound by Michael Wilcox, from an issue of 100 copies, each signed and numbered by the printer / publisher / artist, Ronald Keller, all on straw-colored laid paper for text, 7 original woodcuts printed on straw-colored Nideggen paper. Page size: 9-5/8 x 10-3/4 inches; 48pp. Bound by Michael Wilcox: full morocco with teal, tan, black, blue and red onlays, gilt stamped with custom-made tool about 9/16 inch in shape of a whale with fins, scales, etc. the gilt whales starting at top of front panel and descending down across to bottom corner of back panel as if a pod of whales seen in the sea; the abstract colored onlays are outlined in gilt fillets, two red onlays on front panel hinting at whale's open mouth, with gilt filet "teeth," back panel with dolphin in blue and tan outlined in gilt fillets at top outer corner, double rules blocking front panel into 1/3 and 2/3 space and equal thirds on back panel, the whole forming a prismatic view of the sea and it's denizens; brown and white silk headbands, brown marbled endpapers within red turn-ins with gilt fillet rule, signed on back turn-in in gilt on black ground, "Wilcox / 1982" original brown paper wrappers with woodengraving in black of whale skeleton. Housed in a custom-made tan clamshell box with author and title stamped in gold tilt on back morocco, box a bit bowed at close. An extraordinary and lovely binding from the well-known master bookbinder, Michael Wilcox, commissioned by the late Dr. Thomas Evans, a noted Pennsylvania collector of fine bindings and livres de peintres. Michael Wilcox, who started his career as an English trade binder in 1955, moved to Canada in 1962. He has created some of the finest examples of "designer bindings" - mastering the technical skills of binding with the artistic vision necessary to make a truly beautiful book, interpreting and expressing the contents of a book though a new medium and a new voice. Long out of print from Red Angel Press, CETOLOGY is one of Ronald Keller's earliest titles (second?). He has hand set the text and printed it letterpress in Plantin and Times Roman. The seven original woodengravings, two of which are triple-gate folds, are surrounded by shaped texts which form the outline of the whale. Two woodengravings are printed in black and brown; the remaining woodcuts are printed in black and grey. The size of each mammal is in proportion to the others. A most ambitious book for a beginning press, it is quite successful, giving real weight to Melville's words, not to mention the whales themselves. Perfectly complemented by Michael Wilcox's complex, elegant binding, this is a most beautiful book. See an Image.

Links oben eigenh. bezeichnet: "Kitsch: für Mob art & tone Art 1973. Peripathese". Otto M. Zykan. Zwischen Dadaismus und Strukturdenken. Wien, 2009). - Etw. staubrandig. -

Quantised Singularities in the Electromagnetic Field," in Proceedings of the Royal Society A. 133, 1931, pp. 60-72

FIRST EDITION OF DIRAC'S PREDICTION OF A NEW ELEMENTARY PARTICLE - THE POSITRON - ALONG WITH MAGNETIC MONOPOLES. Though not taken terribly seriously at the time, in 1973 "Heisenberg generously called it…perhaps the biggest jump of all big jumps in physics of our century" (Kragh, Quantum Generations, 191). In 1928, Paul Dirac formulated the so-called "Dirac equation" which describes the behavior of fermions and "was the first theory to account fully for special relativity in the context of quantum mechanics" (Wikipedia). Dirac's new theory, however, did have a problem: the Dirac equation "formally included solutions with negative energy. Contrary to the situation in classical physics, these could not be dismissed as nonphysical but had to be taken seriously - that is, somehow to be related to some objects of nature. In 1929, Dirac believed he had found the solution to the problem… of electrons having negative kinetic energy" (ibid 190). Dirac wrote to Bohr, arguing that "not all states of negative energy are occupied, but that there are a few vacancies of 'holes.'… [O]ne can easily see that such a hole would move in an electromagnetic field as though it had a +ve charge. These holes I believe to be protons" (Kragh 1990, 91). "Dirac's proton-as-electron theory, published in 1930, assumed a world of negative-energy states occupied by an infinite number of electrons governed by Pauli's exclusion principle. Only the few unoccupied states, the 'holes,' would appear as observable physical entities… The hypothesis was universally met with skepticism" (ibid 191). In early 1931, Dirac realized "that the hole had to have the same mass as the electron. In the new version, as it appeared in a remarkable paper [this paper]…the antielectron was introduced for the first time as a 'new kind of particle unknown to experimental physics, having the same mass and opposite charge to an electron (Kragh 1990). Furthermore, as the proton was now a separate species of particle, Dirac argued that it would probably have its own antiparticle. In essence, Dirac was proposing that there had to be a "particle distinct from the proton, positively charged, but having the mass of an electron" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 67). In less than a year, the American physicist Carl Anderson would discover positively charged particles in cosmic ray showers just as Dirac had predicted. Anderson named the new particles 'positrons' "positive electrons with precisely the same mass as the electron, but positively charged" (ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: Complete. 4to (Quarto). 10 x 7 inches (250 x 175mm). [vi], 695, [xiv]. Two small ex-libris stamps on the title page, one just a few numbers. In text illustrations throughout. After an attempt at his own business in the 1930s, Tooley rejoined Francis Edwards following World War II. Tooley devoted much of his time to the history of cartography and was considered an authority on early maps and cartographers. He authored multiple books on the subject and founded the Map Collectors' Circle, which published a series of monographs on historical cartography from 1963-1975. The festschrift, My Head is a Map, compiled in 1973 for his 75th birthday by British Library Map Librarians Helen Wallis and Sarah Tyacke, celebrated his contributions to the world of antiquarian maps.         Hustlers Convention

New York: Harmony Books, 1973. First Edition. Nearly pristine copy of this absolutely seminal work, a book-length jive masterpiece chronicling street-life in Harlem from the Fifties through the Seventies, glorifying the violent lives of crap-shooters, pimps, drug dealers and gang-bangers. Nuriddin recorded the work (also under the nom-de-guerre "Lightnin' Rod") in 1973; no promotional copy for that recording is present here, leading us to assume that the book preceded the album by some months. Among hip-hop afficionados, Hustlers Convention (in its recorded version) is widely cited as one of the "lost masterpieces" of rap music, preceding Sugar Hill Gang's Rapper's Delight (generally hailed as the first true "rap" album) by some six years. In a 2014 profile of Nuriddin in The Guardian, critic Graeme Thomson calls Hustlers Convention "...a crucial but largely overlooked link in hip-hop's evolutionary chain. The genre's pioneers - Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, Fab 5 Freddy - knew it by heart. Grandmaster Flash played it at early block parties, and it was later sampled by the Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan and countless others...[the album is] a premonition of gangsta rap, a vivid depiction of ghetto life lived large, complete with shoot-em-up sound-effects..." Indeed, both the cadence and the ethos of much early hip-hop is evident in Nuriddin's metrical six-line stanzas, in which one finds a clear link between the "toasting" tradition which preceded him and the rap tradition which followed. In the opening stanzas, for example, we encounter rhymes which could just as easily have been written and rapped by Big Bank Hank or Melle Mel : I've seldom lost, 'cause my game was so boss, I mean I had my shit down pat, and I was runnin' through bitches, like rags to riches, 'cause that's where my heart was at Yes, I was a down stud's dream a hustler supreme, there wasn't no game that I couldn't play, and if I caught a dude cheatin' I would give him a beatin' and I might even blow 'em away! Though released by the music division of a major trade publisher (Harmony was a subsidiary of Crown), the book is surprisingly uncommon, with no others located in commerce (2014) and few copies in university special collections. We would suggest that copies in collectible condition, such as this one, are seldom-seen. A documentary of Nuriddin's life, also titled Hustlers Convention, has been scheduled for release in Spring, 2015, directed by Mike Todd and executive produced by rapper ChuckD. Paperback original. Octavo. Illustrated card wrappers; 125, (2)pp; author portrait and promotional blurb at rear. Minimal external wear; slight soil to upper edge of text block; still a tight, apparently unread copy, Near Fine.

        XILOGRAFIE

EDITRICE SARDA FOSSATARO 1973 - RACCOLTA IN CARTELLA DI 26 XILOGRAFIE DELL'AUTORE. LA CARTELLINA PRESENTA LIEVE BRUNITURA E LIEVI SEGNI DEL TEMPO. LE XILOGRAFIE, ALL'INTERNO, SONO PERFETTE. MISURE: 49X34 cm. Giulio R.
