Buzz Aldrin was born in Montclair, New Jersey on January 20, 1930. He was educated at West Point, graduating with honors in 1951, third in his class. After receiving his wings, he flew Sabre Jets in 66 combat missions in the Korean Conflict, shooting down two MIG-15's. Returning to his education, he earned a Doctorate in Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Manned Space Rendezvous. The techniques he devised were used on all NASA missions, including the first space docking with the Russian Cosmonauts. In October 1963, Aldrin was selected by NASA as one of the early astronauts. In November 1966, he established a new record for Extra- Vehicular Activity in space on the Gemini XII orbital flight mission. He has logged 4500 hours of flying time, 290 of which were in space, including 8 hours of EVA. As Backup Command Module Pilot for Apollo VIII, man's first flight around the moon, Buzz significantly improved operational techniques for astronautical navigation star display. Then, on July 20, 1969, Buzz and Neil Armstrong made their historic Apollo XI moon walk, thus becoming the first two humans to set foot on another world. This unprecedented heroic endeavor was witnessed by the largest worldwide television audience in history. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Union Catalog of Hebrew Manuscripts and Their Location. Volume One: Index. Volume Two: Union Catalog. 2-vol. set (Complete)

American Academy for Jewish Research, New York 1973 - The "Union Catalog of Hebrew Manuscripts and Their Location" is comprised of two volumes:- Volume One: Index (1973). Folio. XXXIV, 280pp. Original full green cloth, with gold lettering to spine. Index by Menahem Hayyim Schmelzer; Introduction by Salo Wittmayer Baron, and "Aron Freimann: A Personal Tribute" by Shelomo Dov Goiten. This volume includes a list of frequently used abbreviations; a list of locations, owners of manuscripts, catalogs, and their symbols; and an authoritative index in Roman characters.- Volume Two (1964). Folio. [4]pp (Title and Preface), 462pp. Original full green cloth, with silver lettering to spine. Preface by Saul Lieberman. This volume contains some 12,000 handwritten cards photo-mechanically reproduced. These cards were prepared over a long period of time by the late Professor Aron Freimann who died before he was able to complete his work and to see it through the press. Freimann's intention was to provide scholars with a complete list of all known manuscripts written in Hebrew characters. The entries on the cards usually include the following information:1. Hebrew title2. Author, in German or in English transliteration3. Subject, in German or in English4. Location, generally indicated by symbols5. Bibliography The book is arranged by titles and notes the known locations of the manuscripts. Freimann's catalog is based almost solely on secondary material, catalogs, and other printed sources. Many of the sources he used were compiled over a century ago and never revised. The catalog is incomplete, and the locations of some of the manuscripts are no longer valid. Its references to secondary literature about the manuscript or author, however, are valuable to the bibliographer and researcher. Therefore, it remains an important bibliographical resource. Very minor shelf wear. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Los Angeles Rams: [Signed by six of the best Ram players ever]

New York: Macmillan, 1973. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Fine/Fine Dustjacket in Archival Dustjacket. A handsome and scarce First Edition, First Printing that is signed by some of the best American football players in the history of the game. The book is signed by the late Merlin Olsen, the late Lamar Lundy, the late "Deacon" Jones, the late "Night Train" Lane, the late Ollie Matson, and "Rosie" Grier, all stars with the Los Angeles Rams. Illustrated with many photographs, both color and black & white, the book is in fine condition. Wtih the original dustjacket in fine condition protected by an archival dustjacket. Previous owner's name, and dedicatee of some of the signatures: "Wayne T.(?) Martin, 7-75, Santa Barbara" located on the front endpaper. But what makes this book so special are the signatures as follows: Lamar Lundy (April 17, 1935 - February 24, 2007) signed this book on the front endpaper: "Lamar Lundy #85." Lundy was an American defensive end with the Los Angeles Rams for 13 seasons, from 1957 to 1969. Along with "Deacon" Jones, Merlin Olsen, and Rosey Grier [who all signed this book], Lundy was a member of the "Fearsome Foursome," often considered one of the best defensive lines in NFL history. He was the first of the "Fearsome Foursome" to die. Merlin Olsen (September 15, 1940 - March 11, 2010) signed "Merlin Olsen HOF '82" on the front endpaper. A member of the Los Angeles Rams' "Fearsome Foursome," Merlin Olsen played his entire 15-season career from 1962-1976 as a defensive back with the Los Angeles Rams. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. David "Deacon" Jones (December 9, 1938 - June 3, 2013) signed this book on the front endpaper: "Deacon (?) Jones HOF - 80." The third member of the "Fearsome Foursome," "Deacon" Jones played 12 out of his 14 seasons as a defensive end for the Los Angeles Rams. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980, his first year of eligibility. Roosevelt ("Rosie") Grier (born July 14, 1932) signed this book on the front endpaper, "Peace, Rosie Grier, #76." Grier was the fourth member of the "Fearsome Foursome" defensive line for the Los Angeles Rams having been traded to the Rams in 1963. While Rosie Grier was the oldest of the "Fearsome Foursome," he is the only one that remains alive today. Dick "Night Train" Lane (April 16, 1928 - January 29, 2002) signed "Dick 'Night Train' Lamar HOF '74" on the front free endpaper. "Night Train" Lane played cornerback for the Los Angeles Rams for the first two years of his career and was later traded to other teams. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974. Ollie Matson II ((May 1, 1930 - February 19, 2011), signed this book twice, once on the front free endpaper and again on page 154. The first was "To Wayne Martin, Lots of luck always, Ollie Matson." On page 154 the wrote: "To Wayne, lots of luck, Ollie Matson." Matson played originally for the Chicago Cardinals but was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 1958 as a running back. He played 14 seasons overall and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972.

Children's Crusade Kinderkreuzzug Op. 82 A Ballad for children's voices and orchestra... Words by Bertolt Brecht Illustrations by Sidney Nolan A limited facsimile edition of the composer's manuscript

[London]: Faber, 1973. Limited to 300 copies signed by both the composer and artist, this no. 22. Written to be performed in St. Paul's Cathedral to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Save the Children Fund on May 19, 1969. "The down-to-earth style and impersonal tone of Brecht';s Kinderkreuzzug, a ballad about the death of a wandering band of children in the war-torn Poland of 1939, allowed Britten';s anger to surface. The manipulations of a 12-note row appear to symbolize, here as elsewhere, the dying civilization of Europe, reflected through the fate of the children and their dog, whose death ends ‘a very grisly piece'; (as Britten himself called it) on an unsentimental note." Grove Music Online. "... Britten ensured in two ways that his tribute - to an ideal that is persistently reflected in his own work - should not fall a lifeless victim to stiffly charitable sentiments: he chose a text from Brecht, and he conceived the work for the heterogeneous resources of a school music group - the very skilled Wandsworth School Boys' choir and a large band of percussion players, together with two pianists and an organist. The work that resulted is not directly related to the rest of Britten's output either in genre or in the manner of the muiscal discourse... Of all Britten's works for children, this one most bluntly reminds us how much their world is a microcosm of our own." Evans: The Music of Benjamin Britten, pp. 285 and 292.. Large folio. Original publisher's quarter mid-tan morocco with paper boards, "Kinderkreuzzug" stamped in gilt to upper, titling gilt to spine. 1f. (half-title), 1f. (title), 1f. (limitation statement), 1f. (dedication), 1f. (notes on the manuscript by Britten), 1f. (list of Illustrations), 2ff. (libretto in both German and English), 1f. (facsimile of autograph title), 34 pp. + 1f. (autograph musical manuscript facsimile) + 6 double-sided plates printed in colour. Includes partial page of manuscript facsimile tipped-in between pp. 18-19 and fragment tipped-in to p. 22, as published. Housed in dark ivory paper slipcase. Signed by both the composer and artist at lower margin of limitation leaf. Binding slightly worn; slipcase slightly soiled. A very attractive copy overall.

Original publisher's printed wrappers with photographic reproductions to front and rear covers. Spine has some rubbing of the cover image caused by opening the book over time. A very good copy of Walls Paper, Gordon Matta-Clark's scarce artist book.         The Dark Is Rising; Greenwitch; The Grey King; Silver on the Tree.

London: Chatto & Windus,, 1973-77. 4 works, octavo. Original varicoloured boards, titles to spines in black. With the illustrated dust jackets. Full page illustrations in the text. Generally excellent condition, with only light rubbing to extremities and jackets. First editions, first impressions, each copy signed on the title page, of these four titles in Cooper's "The Dark is Rising" series, lacking only the first title, "Over Sea Under Stone", which was published by Jonathan Cape, a different publisher, much earlier than the following four, in 1965, and is in some senses a separate title. Both the Dark is Rising and The Grey King were Newbery Award winning titles. Cooper's sequence of stories, which wove elements of Celtic, Arthurian and Norse mythology and magic into the lives of ordinary children, won awards on both sides of the Atlantic, and is a noted source for the Harry Potter books.

        The Black Interpreters

(Johannesburg): Ravan Press. (1973). Second issue, with passages by Mandlenkosi Langa censored on pages 54 and 60. Subtitled "Notes on African Writing," with one section on fiction and one on poetry. This copy is signed by the Nobel Prize-winning author. The poet was supposedly issued with a banning order in October, 1973 and the passages quoting him had to be deleted or the issues pulped: later reports say it was actually Langa's brother Benjamin who had been banned. Handling apparent to rear cover; about near fine in wrappers. A fairly uncommon book in either issue, and quite scarce signed. Softcover.
