MILLER, Frank
Frank Miller, 1972. Near Fine. Softcover. Six issues. Quartos. Side stapled mimeographed leaves; the three later issues with cardstock covers. Each between 28pp. and 50pp. Overall near fine or better with some fading to some of the mimeograph covers, minor wear at the edges, a few tiny oxidation spots; and four with names on the covers. An amazing group of six issues of the mimeographed fanzines *EPIC*, drawn and edited by comic book legend Frank Miller while he was still in high school. The issues include 48 pages of stories written and drawn by Miller, along with 13 spot illustrations, three front covers, four rear covers, and four editorials. Miller stands as one of the most influential artists and writers in modern comic books and, in many ways, the person most responsible for dragging comics into the mainstream with his dark and gritty Batman stories of the 1980s, and his daringly innovative creator-owned books *Sin City* and *300*. These comics reveal a comic-obsessed teenager with a single-minded determination to become a comic book professional and with the clear goal to create, according to one of Miller's editorials, "new ideas necessary for the survival of the industry.".

Harper, Michael S.; [Brooks, Gwendolyn]
Scarab Press, San Francisco, 1972. Signed limited edition of this early poem by Michael Harper, one of five hundred copies, warmly inscribed to Gwendolyn Brooks, the poet responsible for jumpstarting Harper's career: "For Gwen Brooks: 'The dream of every poem is to be a true myth' - long life!" Harper and Brooks were close friends, brought together by Harper's first collection of poetry, the National Book Award-nominated Dear John, Dear Coltrane (1970). In a 2009 interview, Harper remembered that Brooks "was the person who gave me my career: she took my book out of the slush pile and insisted that the University of Pittsburgh Press publish [it]." The nine-part poem is drawn from Harper's collection of the same year, Song: I Want a Witness. Dedicated to his wife Shirley, and inspired by her work as a photographer, the poem weaves interconnecting themes of black and white, photographs and negatives, ancestors and descendants: "As a black man I steal away / in the night to the apple tree, / place my arm in the rich grave, / black sachem on a family plot, / take up a chunk of apple root, / let it become my skeleton, / become my own myth: / my arm the historical branch, / my name the bruised fruit, / black human photograph: apple tree." The poem ends by invoking Roger Williams, Puritan founder of Rhode Island, the state where Harper was then teaching. He would become the first poet laureate of Rhode Island in 1988. A near-fine copy, with an exceptional association, linking two major African-American poets of the twentieth century. Single volume, measuring 8.5 x 5.5 inches: [30]. … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1972, he published three books: Shashin yo sayonara [Bye, Bye Photography], Kagero [Mayfly], and Kariudo [Hunter], the publication of Shashin yo sayonara, in particular, left him feeling morally and physically adrift. Soon afterwards he decided to revive his plans for a self-published magazine. He explained his intentions in the June 1973 supplement of Asahi Camera, a text which was translated in Setting Sun. I realized that my photographs were extremely personal, so I made this magazine in order to have a space in which I can immediately reflect any idea whenever I have one … [Click Below for Full Description]

1972. The newsprint is tanned and a little fragile. Of course we handle it with loving care. There is one corner crease at the bottom front that also affects the second page, and a little foxing on the rear cover. This is in amazing condition and we are so glad it was curated thus. Any questions....feel free. In 1972 The LA Times newspaper printed a graphic version of a story from 'The Martian Chronicles'. It was designed by Joseph Mugniani and drawn by Doug Widley and John Cassone. There is also an article about the space probe, Archbishop Timothy Manning, and Burt Bacharach. Vintage advertisements round out the contents. We grade each book by hand. We package safely and ship swiftly. Signature upon receipt and insurance are standard. Independent Booksellers since 1991.

Rand, Ayn
1972. 9 page autograph manuscript on blue paper measuring 8.5 x 11" with holes from staples removed at upper left corner. Written in Rand's hand in blue ink, and heavily annotated and corrected in her hand in blue and red ink. Provenance: the Robert Hessen Collection, selling for $13,800 in 1998. Hessen, from whose collection this originates, was Rand's trusted personal assistant. Across the nine pages of Rand's manuscript, one can trace the multiple layers of her thought process and preparation to speak at a symposium on an issue of importance to her. First writing in blue ink, Rand comes back and aggressively makes changes and alterations with what appears to be the same pen; words are energetically scribbled out, sections scored, and words replaced. A red pen comes later, and here she creates arrows and lines to shift the order of sections, highlight important concepts, and create new section and paragraph breaks. The topic of tax reform was an important one within Rand's Objectivist philosophy; and specifically at this moment she was concerned about the possibility of Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern coming to office and expanding the social safety net. Her opening line, which she leaves untouched except for red emphasis marks, makes this clear: "It is futile to argue about how much money McGovern proposes to take away from you under his sundry tax programs, since he proposes to take it all. More precisely, he seeks to establish a claim to the total national income." By the second page, where Rand has written a draft of the same paragraph and fully … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rand, Ayn
1972. 9 page autograph manuscript on blue paper measuring 8.5 x 11" with holes from staples removed at upper left corner. Montfort, Michael (photographer); Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant,
N.p. Archive of nine black and white, double weight photographs, circa 1972, of Led Zeppelin members Robert Plant and Jimmy Page on stage, apparently unpublished, by noted photographer Michael Montfort, three with the stamp of German magazine "Stern" on the verso. A single photograph also features a bass-playing John Paul Jones in the background. From the estate of the photographer. Born in Freiburg, Germany, Michael Montfort began his career working as a photojournalist for German magazines such as "Stern," "Quick," and "Bild am Sonntag." In addition to shooting numerous rock and jazz performances, he covered Queen Elizabeth's 1965 visit to Germany, the aftermath of the Six Day War in Israel and Egypt, and the May 1968 protests in Paris. Montfort emigrated to Los Angeles in 1973 and began working as a freelancer. Four years later, on assignment for the German literary magazine "Rogners," Montfort was sent to photograph Charles Bukowski. Aided by the case of wine he smartly brought with him to their first meeting, Montfort connected with the publicity-shy and splenetic poet. Over the next two decades, as both Bukowski's drinking buddy and personal photographer, he shot literary thousands of images of Bukowski and collaborated with him on titles such as "Horsemeat," "Shakespeare Never Did This," and "The Wedding." In addition to Bukowski, Montfort shot notable photographs of luminaries such as William S. Burroughs, Klaus Kinski, Brigitte Bardot, and a Jackson 5 era Michael Jackson. Photographs sized variously 11.75 x 8 inches (30 x 20 cm), 15 x 10 inches (38 x 25.5 cm), and … [Click Below for Full Description]

1972. Good/Very Good; tears and some wear on dj; inside price flap clipped. We Have Come For Your Daughters: What Went Down on the Medicine Ball Caravan, by John Grissim, Jr. New York: William Morrow, 1972. Signed and inscribed copy of this scarce, sought-after account of the now-legendary "mobile Woodstock" rock tour of 1970 that was documented first in a disastrous film, and later in this readable and insightful work. From an online review: "On Aug. 5, 1970, a convoy of buses and trucks carrying 154 hippies and an army of cooks, secretaries, camp workers and stagehands left San Francisco on a cross-country journey. A 15-man French film crew would record the series of free concerts staged during the month-long trek for a documentary titled Medicine Ball Caravan. Artists who would fly in and perform along the way included B.B. King, Alice Cooper and Cajun fiddler Doug Kershaw. The Oakland Tribune called the trip "Woodstock on wheels." Caravan was the brainchild of Tom Donahue, the disc jockey who brought underground music to FM radio. Donahue used his connections with the Bay Area's counterculture to handpick the tribe of young artists, poets, craftsmen and painters who appear in the film. Warner Bros., which earned $50 million on a $600,000 investment in Woodstock, its film of the 1969 festival, bankrolled Caravan to the tune of $1 million. The studio hoped to duplicate Woodstock's success with shows that featured many Warners recording artists. The group stopped in places like Boulder, Colo., Sioux City, Iowa and Washington, D.C., then flew to England for a final concert. … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Photography] : [Real Estate]
[San Diego, California]: 1971-1972. Approximately 1300 color slides, with roughly 250 additional color film negatives, and 37 individual manuscript real estate listing forms. Slides approximately 2" square; negatives approximately 1 1/4" square. Slides with mild to moderate dusting, some with residue from previous rubber band wrappings, most with relevent ink notations to margins. Negatives fine, in glassine storage wrappers. Overall contents very good. Slides housed in new archival pages and three dust-proof binders. Before Zillow, Trulia, and Redfin: this swank archive (and others like it) of images from the Sessions Realty firm of La Mesa, California. Consisting of hundreds of sales display slides (and negatives) of exteriors and interiors from San Diego-area homes (accompanied by more than 3 dozen descriptive forms listing home amenities, prices, descriptions, etc.), these images were undoubtedly used for marketing to prosceptive buyers. Shag carpet, macrame, orange and brown color palettes, rec rooms, bold wallpapers, Formica, wood paneling, and other Better Homes and Gardens details much in evidence - all exhibiting a strong Southern California flair. A dense, thorough, and vibrant assembly of period design and architecture offering a rich record of residential real estate in a significantly active market. And while the unknown photographer(s?) certainly wanted to simply document the houses, what emerges is a rather hauntingly mundane narrative where no real action takes place but yet something nevertheless lingers - like crime scene photographs, but without the crime … [Click Below for Full Description]
