This book assigns specific endangered plants and animals to each U.S. Senator. Originally in printed manila envelope (lacking with this copy). One copy was mailed to each U.S. Senator. Rob Rusk writes. .. The Totem Protectorates appeared in another issue of Place magazine, half on the inside front cover and half on the inside back cover - the Neon Rose issue - tho I'm unsure whether it was photocopied or reset". Interestingly, neither the Morgan bibliography of Ginsberg or the McNeil bibliography of Snyder makes mention of this independent piece. Only four copies located in O.C.L.C. Threads visible at the top and bottom fore edges. Just incredible photography. Gorgeous images. DJ lightly soiled and rubbed with moderate wear and several light creases, scuff marks and scratches. First edition of 5200 copies of which 1200 were numbered with a nylon flexi-binding. Hardcover with the dust jacket. 96 black and white reproductions, 2 with blue printed overlays. Very good in a good plus dust jacket. An amazing book by a virtually unknown Hungarian photographer! "In 1968 the photographer Gyorgy Lorinczy took advantage of the Hungarian government's decision to relax its rigorous laws on citizens travelling abroad. As a foreigner's vision, and in terms of photographic outlook, Lorinczy's perspective clearly has affinities with that of William Klein, but his manic exuberance seems to run on pure energy, without the psychological tensions that underpin Klein's more realistic and informed vision of the city. It seems unlikely that Lorinczy saw the work of any of the Japanese photographers of the day, but his book has a similar 'anything goes' feeling, akin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Albany: State University of New York, 1972. Hardcover. Near Fine. First and only editions. Folios. 1971 is thick blue buckram illustrated in white; 1972 is beige suede decorated in brown. 1972 is a trifle soiled, else each volume is just about fine. In the annals of college year books these two represent the apex of the art. According to Martin Parr, in an article for *Time* entitled: "The Best Photobooks About America": "One of the unsung achievements of American publishing are the college annuals, especially the ones produced in the 60/70's. Just recently I found the best one I've ever seen, from the State University of New York [the *Torch 1972*, SUNY Albany]. At over 350 pages, it has hundreds of photos, from images of Phillip Jones Griffiths on the Vietnam war through to sports and student protest." The standard yearbook tropes (i.e., the homecoming game, the stiffly posed, poorly lit group portrait of the debate team, and so on) are there, but surrounded by a visual context that belies the obvious and reflects the time, the place and the era in a particularly jarring manner, with hippies and rock music, gay and lesbian activism, radical feminism, black power images, etc. As an example: the Senior portraits are alphabetized by first name followed only by the last name initial (there is a directory in the rear), interspersed with the smiling faces of the students is a repeated image of a decapitated head from a Vietnam atrocity. While in the article Parr is referencing the 1972 edition. It is unknown if he had seen the 1971 edition, but it is every bit the equal of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Watership Down" by Richard Adams. Rex Collings, London. 1972, first UK edition first printing. folding map, with short closed handling tear, front free endpaper with ink inscription 'Aidan & Nancy Chambers Amberley -S.T.- Nov 1972', pastedowns lightly toned, original cloth, minor pale mottling to tail edges, dust jacket, a few closed tears, head of spine a little frayed, 8vo, together with the Rex Collings Press Release loosely inserted, printed on rectos of two leaves folded, plus a newspaper cutting of Aidan Chambers' review of Watership Down, from The Sunday Times, 3rd December 1972, and a related piece of paper with his pencilled notes. Notes: Aidan Chambers was sent this copy of Watership Down to produce a review of the book for The Sunday Times. The review notes that, to his own astonishment, Watership Down 'is stunning, compulsive reading', and is both minutely detailed and inventive. It is interesting to read his jotted notes, where he asks questions such as 'allegory or not?' and 'for children or not?'. He also points out that because the rabbits are frequently in danger, and yet can fight and inflict damage if needed, this brings to the story 'the possibility of courage (or cowardice) and heroism'. Overall, a very good copy of the rare first UK edition of this timeless children's classic with good dust jacket and very interesting provenance. Paul Strand
Condition: Near Fine. A warm, gracious 2 pg. ALS from the photographer Paul Strand, referencing --among other things-- an evening with Hart Crane. Strand is patiently responding (from France) to a Vietnam vet (whose 2 letters are here included) who asks if he and his wife might work for an aging Strand in any capacity. Strand's August 1972 8 1/4" x 10 1/2" letter in response is bright and clean and has held up nicely. His hand is strong and the ball-point ink completely legible. Also includes the original enevelope (addressed in Strand's hand and postmarked "Yvesines", France).

DOMON Ken.; TANAKA Ikko
1972. First edition. 2 vols. Numerous photographic plates. Japanese text. Folio. Volume of plates in original decorated cloth, text-volume in original flexible boards, in decorated cloth slipcase, in cardboard box. A fine copy, signed by the photographer with his first name 'Ken' on a tipped-in sheet of washi paper. 125pp. Kyoto, Shishin-do, One of the most beautiful book-productions in post-war Japan and undoubtably another milestone in Domon's oeuvre. The art of Bunraku puppet plays was developed in the 17th century and supposedly reached the peak of it's popularity in the 18th century. It is a highly complex art form where wooden puppets are moved on a stage by one to three puppeteers to the accompanyment of a shamisen player and a narrator. The skill of the puppeteer lies in his ability to submerge his whole existence beneath the role of puppet, i.e. to become invisible. Lower ranking puppeteers (so-called 'black children' kuro-ko) wear black robes and masks to help them achieve that aim, but for a master of the art such artificial camouflage is unnecessary. Although first published in 1972, Domon had taken most of the images before the war. One of the most evocative photographs is the left hand of the Yoshida Bungoro (1869-1962), the most renowned master of bunraku during the 20th century. Clearly visible are the calluses that develop from the pressure of the control-mechanism on the thumb and middle finger. Many of the images are taken backstage. Exquisite book-design by Tanaka Ikko. Crews, Harry
1972. Ephemera Ephemera. Very Good. The complete first draft, with revisions, of what would become the sequel to The Gospel Singer. This draft combines working photocopies and original typescript pages. The novella is a foray into metafiction, in which a writer named Harry Crews is kidnapped by characters from his books. A short story adapted from these pages was published in 1981 ([Winston-Salem], Palaemon Press). The finished novella, titled Where Does One Go When There's No Place Left to Go?, first appeared in 1995 (London: Gorse) in a combined re-issue of The Gospel Singer and this sequel. Where Does One Go... was published as a stand-alone book in 1998 (Los Angeles: Graham / Blood and Guts Press). *** This version of the typescript was sent by Crews to an English professor in 1979. Crews began working on the novella in 1972 and struggled with it through many revisions. The Crews papers at the University of Georgia includes several drafts of this book, including what is almost certainly the first 82 pages of this draft (see Box 31 of the Harry Crews Papers). *** Crews' typical working method was to type, double-spaced with no margins, on standard-sized paper (in this case, using a variety of paper stocks). He would hand-correct the typed pages and then photocopy them. The photocopies would be further marked up. At some point, the pages would be retyped and the new typed version would become the starting point for another round of editing and photocopying. *** This working typescript includes: *** 1) Original letter-size typescript pages numbered 83-98, on three kinds … [Click Below for Full Description]
