        Henri Chopin in performance

Sunderland 1972 - 147 x 103 mm. Black and white silver gelatin print. A composite photograph showing Chopin performing sound poetry and reading to an audience at his retrospective exhibition at Ceolfrith Art Centre in 1974. Hand-inscribed on verso by Christopher Carrell (Editor of Ceolfrith Press): ‘Henri Chopin in performance, during his retrospective exhibition at Ceolfrith Art Centre’. Ceolfrith 18 was dedicated to Chopin and published to coincide with the exhibition. During the 1970s, Peter Latham was the principal photographer for Sunderland Arts Centre, of which Ceolfrith Press was a component. In the late 1970s, his archive of negatives was lost. Fortunately, a small collection of prints and contact sheets was saved. Therefore this original gelatin print that records Chopin’s performance is extremely rare. We are unaware of any other example so it may well be unique. Condition: some discolouration to edges and handling, some wear to edges.

Bibl. Med. Neerl. I, p. 279; Krivatsky 1338; Waller 1120; Parkinson, Med. books Manchester 307; G.A. LIndeboom, Geschiedenis van de medische wetensch. in Nederland (1972), Chapt. 4: Bloei (1625-1700). Rare first and only edition of one of the first medical books on child diseases intended for parents: to teach them about the good care and education of children, offering advices and instructions on all sorts of children's illnesses, their prevention and possible cures. Many home recipes are fully described for the parents themselves to prepare and administer to the children. At the end a number of special cases are discussed, like falling sickness and malformed children. After the main text, divided into three parts, follow two other texts: (1) 'Verscheide aanmerkingen aangaande de kinder-ziekten' (Various notes of child diseases), pp. 267-322, including a description of a child whose body was totally covered with scales except for the head, illustrated with a full-page plate (p. 303); the second text, translated from the English, is called 'Historie der Japanse campher' (History of Japanese camphor), pp. 323-332. Blankaart tells that the famous Doctor Wilhelmus ten Rhyne, physician, herb expert and chemist to the Japanese Emperor had sent in the year 1674 a branch of the Japanese camphor tree to the Netherlands. The characteristics and use of the Japanese camphor tree are discussed, but at the end it is concluded that the Sumatra camphor tree is the best. The physician and botanist Willem ten Rhyne (1647-1700) played an important role as an intermediary of European and East-Asian and Japanese medicine. Before he went to Japan he was employed by the Dutch East India Company. He wrote the first European account on acupuncture, De Acupunctura, and the first detailed study of tea, recommending - as a follower of Franciscus Sylvius - copious quantities of tea. Steven Blankaart (1650-1704), physician at Amsterdam, may be regarded as one of the most important Dutch physicians of the 17th century. He was a prolific writer of popular medical treatises, books on anatomy, surgery, etc, including a herbal and a large work on insects. He was the first to introduce Cartenianism into medical science and was one the first physicians to be a scientist and empiricist in the modern sense of the word. Worked on the same field as Jan Swammerdam, Blankaart proved the existence of a capillary system, as had been suggested by Leonardo da Vinci, by spouting up bloodvessels, though he failed to realize the true significance of his findings. He is known for his development of injection techniques for this study and for writing this present first Dutch book on child medicine. Blankaart was like a spider in a web of physicians, ministers and surgeons from all over Europe and the East Indies, China and Japan to provide him with fascinating entries for his journal Collectanea Medico-Physica, including articles by Willem ten Rhyne on moxa-burning (against the gout) and acupuncture. He also corresponded with the mystical writer Antoinette Bourignon and argued in one letter that an earthly paradise would be created if there were a prohibition of alcohol. As an entomologist he also collaborated with Maria Sibylla Merian on the publication of her work.Good copy of a rare early book on pediatrics.- (Bookplate of Façee Schaeffer at the back).

1972. London / Athy / Paris, 1972 - 1990. Original b/w photograph on archival paper. Different formats. From the library and personal archive of irish photographer John Minihan. Most of them titled by John Minihan verso. With John's copyright-stamp verso. Most of the photographs in this collection unframed. John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives.nnThe work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell.nIn between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first.nOver the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer".nnMinihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality;nn 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.'nnMinihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing,nn 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'.nnAmong his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996.nHe is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. nMinihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991.         Rare Original Photograph SIGNED and DEDICATED by FIDEL CASTRO

Berlin, 1972. Berlin: 13 June 1972. One large print press photograph of Fidel Castro with Erich Honecker, with Castro's original signature and manuscript dedication to front, taken by renowned German photojournalist Joachim Spremberg, and in turn dedicated to him by Castro, in Spanish, "Para Achim Spremberg, fraternalmente, Fidel Castro." [To Joachim Spremberg, fraternally, Fidel Castro]. Photograph measures approximately 21,5 x 19,5 cm, accompanied by a green mount, suitable and ready for framing. Official press stamp caption to verso. Excellent condition, a rare vintage colour photograph. This striking vintage photographs captures prominent Communist leader Fidel Castro gaining an important political alliance during his first tour to East Germany in 1972, as he was welcomed upon his arrival at the Berlin-Schönefeld airport by Erich Honecker, General Secretary of Germany's Socialist Unity Party. Signed, dated, and dedicated in the original by Fidel Castro on 13 June 1972, this image was taken at the onset of foundational negotiations for friendship and cooperation between German's Free Democratic Party (GDR) and the Cuban Republic. Fidel Castro's first visit to Berlin began on June 13, 1972 and at various points addressed the border guards that policed the Berlin Wall to prevent East Germans from escaping to the West. At Brandenburg gate on June 14 in the afternoon he addressed the men charged with shooting East Germans fleeing to West Germany as "the courageous and self-denying border guards of the Free Democratic Party (GDR) People's Army who stand guard in the front line of the entire-socialist community." Later in the evening Premier Castro addressed the Nikolay Bezarin Barracks in East Berlin. He also made a formal address to German civilians, walking through the crowds to greet them in person. He spent most of his visit accompanied by Erich Honecker, leader of the German Democratic Republic, who is seen in this photograph. In 1974, at Havana, Erich Honecker and Fidel Castro would sign an "agreement on cooperation between the German SED and the Cuban Communist Party for the years 1974-1975". Hans-Joachim Spremberg (1943-1978) is the author of this photograph and supporter of Fidel Castro who dedicated and signed the press print for his personal keeping. Commonly known as simply Joachim Spremberg, he was a German photojournalist in East Germany, born in Berlin. He documented life in East Berlin, as well as the construction of the Berlin TV tower. He was selected as official photographer for several high state occasions with Free Democratic Party (GDR) Party, and also with communist politician Walter Ulbricht. He died in a helicopter crash at Wadi Suf al-Jin in Libya.. Inscribed and Signed.

One of 1000 numbered copies produced for the King Ranch, at the time reputed to be the largest ranch in the world, and signed by the author. Additionally, inscribed by Vavra at length to an award-winning writer: "For ___ - who at one time was also under the spell of the bulls of Iberia. Thanks again for your help with my new book. It would be great to have you at the ranch - imagine the ¡oles¡. All best/ Robert/ April 23, 1996." Clothbound; mild spine fade; else fine in a near fine slipcase with several lamination creases to the pictorial covers. The copyright page has blacked out information covered with a pasted-on label, suggesting this edition was made up of copies from the Seville, Spain, edition which, although identified as a signed limited issue was not signed. This is copy number 54, and it is doubtful that there were actually 1000 produced; if there were, it is doubtful they were actually distributed: the book seems to be fairly scarce, and this issue of it very much so. On top of that, this copy is a nice association. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.

        Poems Two

Trigram Press, London 1972 - Small 8vo, pp. 61. Original grey boards, lettered in silver to spine. Green endpapers, illustrated dustwrapper. Light bumping to corners, but a near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper with some edgewear to folds and spine ends, and with a couple of small closed tears to top edge. First trade edition, preceded by a signed limited edition of 100 copies, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION TO JUNE TILLINGHAST: 'for June with love from Bryan, 11/4/72'. June Tillinghast was the widow of Tony Tillinghast, Johnson's close friend and confidant on all things literary, who died of cancer in 1965 at the age of twenty-nine. After Tony's death, Johnson and June remained in close contact. 'These poems were written between 1964 and 1971. While I am reasonably (even over-) prolific in other forms of writing, I manage so few poems that it is seven years or so (as it was with my first volume) before I have enough for a collection.' (Dustwrapper blurb). A poignant association copy.

THE WHOLE PRESENT SYSTEM: A SUPERB PHOTOGRAVURE BROADSIDE ILLUSTRATED WITH A CIVIL WAR IMAGE ABOVE LINES QUOTED FROM A FOOTNOTE IN WALT WHITMAN'S "DEMOCRATIC VISTAS"

Brookline, Massachusetts: David R. Godine, [1972]. [1972]. - Brookline, Massachusetts: David R. Godine, [1972]. [1972]. Very good. - sc - A 31 inch high by 22 inch wide broadside printed on heavy cream "cartridge paper made by Schut". The broadside is illustrated with a 15 inch high by 20 inch wide soft-hued photogravure printed by Joh. Enschede portraying a Civil War encampment with wounded soldiers resting between trees. The text, quoted from Whitman's footnote in "Democratic Vistas", reads: "The whole present system of the officering and personnel of the army and navy of these States, and the spirit and letter of their trebly- aristocratic rules and regulations, is a monstrous exotic, a nuisance and revolt, and belong here just as much as orders of nobility, or the Pope's council of cardinals. I say if the present theory of our army and navy is sensible and true, then the rest of America is an unmitigated fraud. Walt Whitman". The first line is printed in sienna-colored capital letters above the lowercase black text reproduced from calligraphy by Bram De Does. Credits printed along the bottom read: "Published by David R. Godine, 282 Newton Street, The Barn, Brookline, Massachusetts 02146 / Printed in Photogravure by Joh. Enschede en Zonen, Haarlem, Holland, on a Cartridge Paper made by Schut, Heelsum, Holland / Calligraphy by Bram De Does". There is minor light foxing along the lower left margin of the broadside and a tiny spot to the middle right margin. There are some light creases to the bottom right corner and some light horizontal creases along the lower half of the broadside. Very good. RARE>
