Pierre Molinier, Lui-meme ("pierre Molinier, Myself") : Essay Uber Den Surrealistischen Hermaphroditen

Munich, Germany: Rogner & Bernhard(1972). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 90 pages. Artist Book. One of the greatest art photography books of the 20th century. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. Published as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely beautiful production by Pierre Molinier and Rogner & Bernhard: Regular-sized volume format. Black cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Pierre Molinier. Essay by Peter Gorsen. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Munich, Germany to the highest standards. In publisher's original paper wrappers. In glassine DJ, as issued. Presents "Pierre Molinier, Lui-Meme". He himself, truly ahead of his - and our - time. Some of the most haunting (and haunted) auto-erotic photographs ever made by an artist. The challenge Molinier poses is fundamental: Is he an artist or not? That is to say, his fetishism can be easily dismissed and its transcendent beauty denied. His is the work of someone who was, on the outside, a conventionally handsome and refined French gentleman. His unsettling work, which he produced for his own private pleasure, belies this mask and rejects it. Because he also created remarkable etchings and paintings, Pierre Molinier did not think of himself primarily as a photographer, but rather as an artist who also realized his vision through photography. He shot carefully staged photographic tableaux that utilized mannequins and other props. The latter reminds us of his obsession with sex as pure fantasy, as something which begins and ends as a fantasy that can never ever be achieved in reality. In the process, he created some of the most disturbingly beautiful photographs of the 20th century. Molinier shows that the erotic (as opposed to the pornographic) is about beauty (that is, the beauty of sexual fantasy), an aesthetic (rather than an arousal or actual sex) experience. Gilles Berquet, Lucas Samaras, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Ellen Von Unwerth, among many others, would not be possible without Molinier's pioneering example. An absolute "must-have" title for Pierre Molinier collectors. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original paper wrappers, and is especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: We have not seen a more beautiful copy of a book that is usually found with major flaws. A rare copy thus. 50 plates. Selected as one of the "Seminal Photography Books of the 20th Century" in the "Book of 101 Books". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO HANS BELLMER AND GILLES BERQUET TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3920802950.

Throughout her lifetime she was known as one of the most accomplished sculptors of animal and human forms: men, dogs, horses and birds were her most consistent subjects. Her graphic work and drawings privileged the same themes and were executed with the same simplicity and sense of texture that can be found in her sculptural work.         GUY DE COINTET: A CAPTAIN FROM PORTUGAL

Self-Published, NP (Los Angeles). ND (1972). - np (48pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "A Captain From Portugal" is the first artist's book published by the late Parisian-born, Los Angeles-based conceptual and performance artist Guy de Cointet. It is comprised of primarily rune-like letterforms of a self-devised language with an example of music, and what appears to be a line of hieroglyphics thrown in. While it bears no publication details - nor in fact any English - it is noted as having been self-published by the artist in 1972 in an edition of seven hundred copies in Frederic Paul's authoritative 2014 Flammarion monograph "Guy de Cointet". A most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon item - only four copies are currently cited in OCLC WorldCat - showing a bit of age-toning and soiling to its white wrappers. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         August 1914.

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York 1972 - Early printing of the Solzhenitsyn's epic novel of Russian history. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed and dated by Alexander Solzhenitsyn on the title page. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design Guy Fleming. Translated by Michael Glenny. "A grand meditation on history, a masterly re-creation of people and faces caught up in the sweep of time, symbolized by a rolling fiery red wheel. The work is breathtaking in scope . . . Much credit for its power must go to Mr. Willetts's superb translation," thought the The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal concluded that "it is now clear that [Solzhenitsyn] towers over all his contemporaries, European, American, and Latin American . . . The greatness of Russia is in this novel as it has not been in any work of fiction since the generation of Dostoevski and Tolstoy." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
