"THE AVENGER" SERIES 36 VOLUMES: Justice Inc, Yellow Hoard, Sky Walker, Blood Ring, Smiling Dogs, Hate Master, Black Death, Wilder Curse, Demon Island, Blood Countess, Cartoon Crimes, Dr. Time, Purple Zombie, Man from Atlantis, + 12 Others

New York: Warner Paperback Library 1st Editions 1972-1975 ----------36 paperbacks, some are Canadian printings. In 1972 to 1975, Warner Paperback Library issued these 36 Avenger novels, reprinting the 24 novels from the "The Avenger" hero pulp magazine (24 issues, September 1939 to September 1942), plus 12 new original novels continuing the series, all as FIRST EDITION PAPERBACK ORIGINALS. All 36 books offered here, the COMPLETE SET, are FIRST printings, there are NO later printings. Paul Ernst (1899-1985), using the famous house name Kenneth Robeson (which was also used on the Doc Savage pulp) wrote the first 24 books for the pulp magazine, and they are reprinted here in book form for the first time. Books 25-36 were written by Ron Goulart (1933- ), also using the Robeson pseudonym, as new books published here for the first time. Front cover art was by Peter Caras for the first 8 volumes, and by George Gross for all other volumes. As for condition, this is a marvellous set, with, but for the most modest shelfwear, almost all of the books being unread as new. Descriptions of the few exceptions follow: # 2, faint reading crease / # 28 faint reading crease, 4 small drops of some liquid which has penetrated the front cover and marked the verso and first page as well, pen price on first page, mild edgewear / # 32 some edgewear, corner crease / # 36 faint corner crease. An attractive series of books, uniform in appearance. Full title list follows: # 1 Justice, Inc. / # 2 The Yellow Hoard / # 3 The Sky Walker / # 4 The Devil's Horns / # 5 The Frosted Death / # 6 The Blood Ring / # 7 Stockholders in Death / # 8 The Glass Mountain / # 9 Tuned for Murder / # 10 The Smiling Dogs/ # 11 The River of Ice / # 12 The Flame Breathers / # 13 Murder on Wheels / # 14 Three Gold Crowns / # 15 House of Death / # 16 The Hate Master / # 17 Nevlo / # 18 Death in Slow Motion / # 19 Pictures of Death / # 20 The Green Killer / # 21 The Happy Killers / # 22 The Black Death / # 23 The Wilder Curse / # 24 Midnight Murder / # 25 The Man from Atlantis / # 26 Red Moon / # 27 The Purple Zombie / # 28 Dr. Time / # 29 The Nightwitch Devil / # 30 Black Chariots / # 31 The Cartoon Crimes / # 32 The Death Machine / # 33 The Blood Countess / # 34 The Glass Man / # 35 The Iron Skull / # 36 Demon Island. . First Edition. Mass Market Paperback. As New. Illus. by Peter Caras & George Gross (front covers). Note: our prices on Biblio are the LOWEST of any of the sites on which we list our books.

Millhauser followed with a second novel, Portrait of a Romantic (1977) and his first collection of short stories In The Penny Arcade (1986). In 1997 he won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for Martin Dressler and, in 2012, the Story Prize for We Others.

London: New English Library 1972 - Uncorrected Proof Copy of this unpublished book. Original green printed card covers, in the dustwrapper. An excellent FINE copy, without inscriptions or stamps. Illustrated throughout. Complete with the NEAR FINE lightly creased dustwrapper with the publisher's stamp reading "Publication 20 APR 1972" to the underside. The dustwrapper illustration is by Tony Lamb, the image repeated without colour as an illustration in the book. The book had it made publication, would almost certainly have been issued with a laminated hardcover or as a paperback original so the dustwrapper seen here is most likely the proof artwork for the upper and lower covers (a theory further supported by the very thin and completely blank flaps). Loosely laid in is the publisher's slip with the signature in red ink of Mark Howell underneath which Peter Haining has signed and inscribed "The compiler of this little opportunist book which was never published!". Rare. We are aware of only two other copies, both lacking the dustwrapper / cover artwork; one copy in the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at Emory University, the other sold at auction in 2006 (front cover detached).Provenance: Mark Howell, editor New English Library; then to Peter Haining, editorial director New English Library. The best John Lennon book never published! Compiled from interviews given by Lennon over 1970 and 1971 the book was due to be published by New English Library in April 1972 but was pulled at the last minute. There are several theories for this, the strongest being that the publication might jeopardise John's already troublesome application for his US Green Card, a fight that started following his deportation in February 1972 up until being granted permanent residency in July 1976. Additionally Inscribed by editor and long-time close friend, Irving Drutman, 'For Mike x from Irving'. Drutman was Michael 'Mike' de Lisio's longtime companion and de Lisio's, (The Sculptor Who Turned Photos Into Statues- NY Times-Feb. 2, 2003) 1967 sculpture of Janet Flanner, worked from a photograph of Flanner which appeared on a postcard she sent him, is printed on the back cover .       Yuma, AZ: Privately printed at the Cactus Press,, [c. 1972?]. Perfect bound. Original cream wrappers, black cloth backstrip, photographic illustrations of a Cooper's Hawk to the upper wrapper. Illustrations throughout. A couple of light spots to the cover, wrappers very slightly creased at the corners. A superb copy. Second edition of the author's first book, a classic of falconry by one of America's most revered practitioners of the sport. McElroy originally sent the manuscript of this book to James T. Johnson of the Peregrine Press, but instead of being corrected and typeset it was published with numerous errors, and the author had most of the print run destroyed. Now known as the "brown cloth tape edition", only 287 copies were released. The book was republished in 1996 as "Desert Hawking: With a Little Help from My Friends" and a second volume, Desert Hawking II appeared in 1977, but the first two editions of the present are particularly scarce, with OCLC recording only one institutional copy of the first edition and only two copies of this, the second edition.

        Sadness [Inscribed to John Barth]

NY: Farrar Straus Giroux. (1972). Inscribed by Barthelme to John Barth and his wife: "For Jack and Shelly with all best/ Don." With Barth's ownership signature ("Barth") written in the upper corner. In 1972, Barthelme won the National Book Award for his children's book The Slightly Irregular Fire Engine; Barth won the National Book Award the next year for his 1972 novel Chimera; both authors taught at Boston University for a time, and the two were linked for years in the 1960s and 70s as two of the foremost exponents of a new American fiction -- post-modern and playful, taking cues from Borges and other experimental writers from around the world, in opposition to the sturdy realism of most of the acclaimed American literature of the 20th century up to that point. Small penciled checks to contents page (although "The Sandman" gets an "x"). Minor fading to top stain and crown, else fine in a very near fine dust jacket with slight creasing to the top edge and the front flap. From the library of John Barth. An exceptional association copy. . First Edition. Hardcover.
