A very sharp copy.Their insight and analysis, reasoned back through the history of style and symbolism and forward to the recognition of a new kind of building that responds directly to speed, mobility, the superhighway and changing life styles, is the kind of art history and theory that is rarely produced. The rapid evolution of modern architecture from Le Corbusier to Brazil to Miami to the roadside motel in a brief 40-year span, with all the behavioral esthetics involved, is something neither architect nor historian has deigned to notice" (The New York Times).

Though Moriyama was later dismissive of the book, claiming that it was made to fund his 1971 trip to New York, the book derives a good deal of power from the tension the images gather from their pastoral settings, at odd with the urban environments usually associated with scenes of bondage.

        The Best and the Brightest

New York: Random House, 1972. First edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original blue cloth. Inscribed by the author, "For Barbara Firgir with best wishes David Halberstam." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. The Best and the Brightest, Pulitzer Prize winner David Halberstam's… most important and impressive book, sets out to discover why America got involved in the worst and messiest war in our history. 'What was it about the men, their attitudes, the country, its institutions and above all the era which had allowed this tragedy to take place?' They were, after all, 'the best and the brightest,' so why did it happen? It happened, Halberstam concludes, because, 'they had, for all their brilliance and hubris and sense of themselves, been unwilling to look and learn from the past." In 1992, looking back over 20 years to this first publication of The Best and the Brightest, "Halberstam noted that the book's title had entered the language, but not quite as he had hoped. 'It is often misused,' he wrote, 'failing to carry the tone or irony that the original intended" (New York Times).

        Openers (Signed First Edition)

Pyramid Publishing Company Austin, TX: Pyramid Publishing Company, 1972. First Edition. First Edition. SIGNED by Roky Erickson on the front flyleaf. A book of poems written by Erickson, legendary singer and songwriter for the 13th Floor Elevators, during his stay at the Rusk Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Austin. The only physical evidence of his creative endeavors made between electroconvulsive shock therapy treatments, which included the formation of a band with fellow inmates called The Missing Links, and reportedly writing nearly 100 songs. Working with his childhood friend George Kinney, Erickson published this volume while still institutionalized. A collection of 45 poems, nearly all of which are extremely positive and upbeat ("Let's Have a Never-Ending Love Contest," "When You Get Delighted," and "Thank God for Civilization" are a few examples). Outside of anthologies, perhaps the only volume of poetry ever published with the poems arranged in alphabetical order. Erickson would take a different turn upon his release, forming a hard rock band called Roky Erickson and the Aliens, writing almost exclusively about satanism and riffing on classic horror films. Toward the end of the 1970s he again went into a long period of mental decline and has only recently begun to perform again. A rare title, nearly impossible to find with a contemporary signature. A second collection, titled "Openers II," containing Erickson's song lyrics, essays, and interviews, was published 23 years later, in 1995. Very Good plus in moderately soiled, white cloth-covered boards, a gilt peace/cross symbol design on the front board, gilt spine titles, and no dust jacket as issued.
