New York, New York

Budapest: Maygar Helikon 1972 - First Edition. Small quarto. Number 377 of 1200 press-numbered copies bound in flexible nylon boards. (There was also an edition of 5200 unnumbered copies bound in paper covered boards.) A towering accomplishment by a virtually unknown Hungarian photographer, resuscitated from obscurity by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. Traveling to New York for a two month stint in the pivotal year of 1968, Lorinczy is able to capture the flavor of the city and the fervor of era. At the same time, and with total serendipitous coincidence, his work blends seamlessly into the photographic trends of the time, from the Provoke movement to Warhol. While Lorinczy's solarized image of Radio City overlaid with blue glassine has become a classic, his rhapsodic city snowscapes are some of the most evocative New York pictures I have seen. (Parr / Badger, v1, 262-263). Bookplate of Hungarian photographer Földes Andras, areas of peeling to the nylon around the spine as is always the case; close to near fine in an almost near fine jacket with two small tears repaired by tape at the verso. Satanic Rituals

Avon, 1972. Mass Market Paper. Fair. Paperback SIGNED by Anton LaVey! I had Anton sign this for a friend so it is signed to her, as Anton only signed books to people. The cover has lots of creases and wear. There is an edge stain most prominant on the 1st page below the signature, might be from a flame, this runs through about a third of the book being only in the margins. As far as I can tell this is the only authentic signed book by Anton avaliable now on line.

Cockfighter (First Edition, inscribed in 1973)

New York: Crown Publishers, 1972. First hardcover edition, preceded by a paperback original published by Chicago Paperback House in 1962. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper, with typical dry wit: "To Palmer [and] Marge Carlson - / Your determination in getting this book almost -- almost -- matches Frank Mansfield's. My warmest personal regards. Yours, / Charles Willeford / 17 Feb 1973." & & The "Frank Mansfield" to whom Willeford refers is the narrator of "Cockfighter," a disgraced gamecock trainer who has taken a vow of silence (which, at the start of the novel, has lasted over two years) until he wins the elusive Cockfighter of the Year Award. One of only two inscribed copies we have ever seen.& & The author's uncommon second hardcover title. Basis for the 1972 Monte Hellman film, for which Willeford wrote the screenplay and played a key supporting role, starring Warren Oates in a little-known but brilliant performance as Mansfield. & & Fine and unread in a Very Good only dust jacket. Owner name matching the inscription to the front pastedown. Jacket is chipped and rubbed, with light toning to the spine, and a sticker shadow to the rear panel.

American Folk Blues Festival, Original, Vintage, 1972, German Concert Poster By Gunther Kieser [SIGNED]

American Folk Blues Festival Concert Poster, Musikhalle, Hamburg, March 14, 1972 produced by Lippmann & Rau, designed by Gunther Kieser and SIGNED by Kieser, to the Michel + Kieser imprint at the lower right margin; additionally SIGNED by concert promoter, Fritz Lau at the bottom right. A1 Format, 23.5" by 33.25" (59.7 cm. by 84.5 cm.); the poster has never been folded and is in about fine condition, with pin holes to corners, else, bright, unmarked. The American Folk Blues Festival was the brainchild of German concert promoters, Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau, who had been successfully presenting jazz concerts in Germany since the mid - 1950’s. First held in 1962, this was the tenth anniversary of the festival, for which this poster was designed, and featured several of the musicians, including T-Bone Walker and Memphis Slim who had been part of the original festival. Working with the well-connected Chicago bluesman, composer and bassist Willie Dixon, L&R had for the past decade presented a who’s who of American urban and country blues artists for the first time to European audiences with successful concerts in England, France and Germany. Early exposure to these great American blues musicians inspired and influenced a generation of British musicians, including future rock stars Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, all of whom played an important role in the blue-based British Invasion of the 1960’s. This was to be the last AFBF for eight years although the festival did resume in 1980 and continued for another five years. The posters created exclusively for the German AFBF festivals were designed by the eminent graphic designer Gunther Kieser and are representative of some of his finest music poster designs. A significant blues poster for the tenth presentation of the influential American Folk Blues Festival, in collector’s condition, scarce without factory folds and SIGNED by the designer. 1751. About Fine.

Original artwork of a Grizzly Bear in mountainous landscape

Gouache and wash over a partial photographic base, signed at the lower right corner, on paper, laid down onto board. Sheet size: 24 x 31 3/4 inches. An evocative image of the wilderness of North America and one of its most iconic inhabitants. James Carter Beard, the son of artist James Henry Beard, was born in Cincinnati, but lived and worked in New York, exhibiting with the Brooklyn Art Association. Much of his work was carried out in grey wash as he did a great deal of work for magazines and books that did not require colour. The exact method he employed for the present work is not clear, but he seems to have had an image of a bear printed (photographically) without a background. He then added the surroundings using both gouache and wash, placing the bear in a finely observed naturalistic setting. He then worked on the bear, adding detail, particularly to the head and the paws, before signing his name twice at the lower right corner: once in a brown tone, and again over the top in black. This combination of techniques suggest that this work was created as artwork for an illustration or a plate in a book or magazine: unfortunately it has not been possible to identify the publication. [Photographie originale] Trois tirages de deux portraits photographiques de Chris Marker portant des masques de Folon. Photographies par Jean-Michel Folon. Circa 1972

1972. Photo. Illus. by Jean-Michel Folon. Bon. Aucune reliure.

        Existential Errands

Little Brown, Boston, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Signed by Author. Surface marks to jacket and a slight paper adhesion on the rear panel, short tears to jacket at spine ends, still attractive and very good. Faint wear and discoloration to book edges. Inscribed by Mailer "To Buzz and Carol These were the years, hey gang? Love Norman May '72". Buzz and Carol Farbar were longtime friends of Mailer's from the publishing business - Buzz was involved in Mailer's three movies (Maidstone, Wild 90 and Beyond the Law), playing Buzz Cameo in the improvised gangster film "Wild 90" which is the subject of the essay "Some Dirt in the Talk" in this collection. Years later Buzz was arrested in a sting operation trying to buy a kilo of cocaine (actually a harmless white powder being shopped by an undercover agent). In return for a promise of a radically reduced sentence, Buzz was convinced to wear a wire to a lunch at Armando's in Brooklyn with Mailer where he would get Norman to admit that he was the money guy in an international hashish ring run by Mailer's onetime associate Richard Stratton. It didn't work out and Buzz was given no a harsh 6 year sentence. His wife Carol divorced him in 1985 and he ended up tragically committing suicide after being released from prison. Needless to say, rumors about Mailer's involvement in the drug smuggling and in Buzz's silence on the matter have made the rounds over the years. A terrific association with a close associate and one of the more puzzling episodes in one of the great literary lives of the 20th century. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Essays & Literary Criticism; Signed by Author. Inventory No: 043587. .
