Pasadena: Baxter Art Gallery, 1972. Pasadena: Baxter Art Gallery, 1972. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Side-stapled 4to. Additionally tape-bound, as issued. Limited edition, one of 100 numbered copies SIGNED by Dewar, this #97. Very good with some rubbing to wraps. Small spot of soil front cover/ to front cover. Bit of splitting to tape binding, but otherwise entirely sound with staples firmly holding. [20], versos only, plus title page and covers. While experiments in computer art existed since the late 1950s, and only grew in influence throughout the 60s, our research strongly suggests that Dewar's A TECHNICAL CATALOG OF COMPUTER HALFTONES should almost certainly be termed the earliest digital artist's book. Though catalogues of computer art exhibitions (EAT, 1971's Computer and Arte) featuring multiple artists certainly predate, as does Max Bense's landmark periodical ROT and Beryl Korot and Phyllis Gershuny's RADICAL SOFTWARE, as well as the work of groups like Britain's Computer Arts Society, none engendered what could be properly termed an artists' book. Nelson Howe, Steve and Roger Hesterman's landmark JOB ART predates, but was a collaborative effort. And though this book was produced in conjunction with an exhibition held at the California Institute of Technology from April 27th-June 10th 1972, this is the first editioned publication we're aware of both generated by computer and produced by a single artist that also, as Joanna Drucker has described, "[is] created as an original work of art [...] [and] integrates the formal means of its realization and production with its thematic or aesthetic issues." Includes 20 reproductions of the nascent genre of computer assisted illustration (including one full-color digital photo), each accompanied by Dewar's carefully detailed description of techniques used -- lending the entire production a certain conceptual air. With its experiments in computer photography included as well, a pioneering digital photobook as well. Rare. OCLC locates just two holdings, one at MOMA and the other as part of the larger YLEM archive at Stanford. An important but largely undiscovered and almost completely undocumented book.

        Learning from Las Vegas

Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1972.. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1972. First edition of this ground breaking work. Folio, original blue cloth with illustrated frontispiece. Fine in the glassine dust jacket with some light wear. Signed by both Robert Venturi (who has added a drawing of Venturi's Mother's House) and Denise Scott Brown. A very nice copy. Their insight and analysis, reasoned back through the history of style and symbolism and forward to the recognition of a new kind of building that responds directly to speed, mobility, the superhighway and changing life styles, is the kind of art history and theory that is rarely produced. The rapid evolution of modern architecture from Le Corbusier to Brazil to Miami to the roadside motel in a brief 40-year span, with all the behavioral esthetics involved, is something neither architect nor historian has deigned to notice" (The New York Times).

        Existential Errands

Boston: Little Brown, 1972. Boston: Little Brown, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Very Good. First Edition. Hardcover. Surface marks to jacket and a slight paper adhesion on the rear panel, short tears to jacket at spine ends, still attractive and very good. Faint wear and discoloration to book edges.& & Inscribed by Mailer "To Buzz and Carol These were the years, hey gang? Love Norman May '72". Buzz and Carol Farbar were longtime friends of Mailer's from the publishing business - Buzz was involved in Mailer's three movies (Maidstone, Wild 90 and Beyond the Law), playing Buzz Cameo in the improvised gangster film "Wild 90" which is the subject of the essay "Some Dirt in the Talk" in this collection. Years later Buzz was arrested in a sting operation trying to buy a kilo of cocaine (actually a harmless white powder being shopped by an undercover agent). In return for a promise of a radically reduced sentence, Buzz was convinced to wear a wire to a lunch at Armando's in Brooklyn with Mailer where he would get Norman to admit that he was the money guy in an international hashish ring run by Mailer's onetime associate Richard Stratton. It didn't work out and Buzz was given no a harsh 6 year sentence. His wife Carol divorced him in 1985 and he ended up tragically committing suicide after being released from prison. Needless to say, rumors about Mailer's involvement in the drug smuggling and in Buzz's silence on the matter have made the rounds over the years. A terrific association with a close associate and one of the more puzzling episodes in one of the great literary lives of the 20th century. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Essays & Literary Criticism; Signed by Author. Inventory No: 043587.

        Watership Down

London: Rex Collings, 1972.. London: Rex Collings, 1972. First edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original brown cloth. Signed by the author "Yours sincerely Richard Adams" on the title page. Laid in is a letter from Richard Adams assistant. Near fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with light shelf wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very sharp copy. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits ... improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later.

He contributed works to the mingei (folk art) movement, his katazome calendar folios were initiated in 1946. Serizawa was designated a "Living National Treasure" by the Emperor of Japan in 1956, and after his death, the Tohoku Fukushi University of Sendai, constructed and dedicated a museum comprised solely of Serizawa's art work. The label appearing on the cover and bottom of each calendar, "Western Automobile Co., Ltd." was a custom gift made gift for Mercedes-Benz of Japan.

ANAKED, one: A personal statement on the subject of love, The Little Sand Crab

Privately Printed 1972 - The wonderful piece of art is in an edition of 200 copies, this is #152. The book is set in 10pt. Century Schoolbook Bold and 12pt. Americana. It has 24 leaves consisting of art paper and id bound accordion-style: Yellow cloth over boards tied with green thread. Book is internally beautiful and binding is very fine. The book has 9 striking serigraphs each signed and numbered by D'Ambrosio. Anaked one is a two part story. The second story, part two, The Little Sand Crab starts on the last page of the first and cleverly the reader goes backwards through the book to complete the second story, which ends on the first page of the previous story. To quote the D'Ambrosio " In ANAKED, one, printed on the Adana press, I wrote two separate stories sandwiched between the beginning and the end of a third story. The word 'ANAKED is a composite of " ankh" and "naked," pronounced Ah-nah-ked. First, the reader finds the story of Anaked. The story is written in a manner which allows the reader to assume that it has ended. Then the second story. Emily and Oscar, appears. At the conclusion of Emily and Oscar, and the apparent end of the book, the reader finds on the very last page, the title page for yet another story, The Little Sand Crab. And since I bound the book in an accordion fashion, by continuing to turn the pages, the story unfolds." Readers had asked the author/artist for art to hand on their walls, all the serigraphs are tipped in with library tape for easy removal. Also included in this books one block print printed in orange ink. ANAKED one is one of Joe' most ambitious projects and is a must for D,Ambrosio collectors and collectors of very fine book art. The book is signed by D'Ambrosio and also inscribed to . [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Kagerou (Dayfly) (SIGNED)

Tokyo: Haga Books 1972 - First edition, first printing. Condition: Near fine (solid binding with creasing to spine, some soiling to wrappers and a little foxing to the extremities) in Very Good slipcase (structurally sound with worn edges and some paper loss around the crease of the spine and at the head). Scarce. Signed in black ink by Moriyama, in Kanji and English ("Daido"), to the half title page. Softcover in slipcase. Cream stiff card wrappers, with the title debossed to the cover and printed to the spine, housed in a photographically illustrated paper covered card slipcase. Photographs by Daido Moriyama. 4to (26.5cm x 19cm in slipcase), unpaginated (pp.[188]), numerous black and white and colour reproductions. Cited in Alessandro Bertolotti, Books of Nudes (New York: Harry N Abrams, Inc., 2007). From Bertolotti: "Kagerou carries further the artistic revolt Moriyama began with Provoke 2: Eros. At the book's centre, the photographs show the photographer and his assistants tying up girls. At the beginning and the end, there are full page photos of the girls, tied up in white string, which constricts their bodies in humiliating poses. Moriyama intended this to represent the sadism of men, who pretend to have an inferiority complex with regard to women, and to highlight the correlations among the sex drive, death and madness." Olympia-Schwimmhalle Starkstrom- und Flutlichtanlage XX. Olympische Spiele München 1972.

München, AEG-Telefunken, 1972.. 34 durchnumeriertge S. und diverse Beilagen. 4°, PVC-Rinordner.. Schmuckloser Ringordner ohne Einbandtitelei. Alles in Klarsichtfolien eingelegt.

Archive of manuscripts, original film prints, photographs, and proposals for "The Great American Dream Machine," 1971-1972, from the estate of Marshall Efron

New York: Self published, 1972. New York: Self published, 1972. An archive of material from the sketch comedy program "The Great American Dream Machine," including personal film prints, annotated scripts, unrealized proposals, photographs and ephemera. From the estate of Marshall Efron, one of the show's co-creators, who also served as its producer, writer, and host.& & Running one season of 22 episodes (initially 90 minutes each, later 60 minutes), from 1971-1972 on PBS by way of the PBS New York affiliate WNET, "The Great American Dream Machine" was the brainchild of producers Jack Willis and Al Perlmutter, and writers Efron and Alfa-Betty Olsen. Together they fashioned a satirical, sketch comedy program that also included experimental short films and political commentary, predicting the likes of "Saturday Night Live," "Fernwood Tonight," and "SCTV," while also launching the careers of Albert Brooks, Chevy Chase, Martin Mull (who wrote songs for the series), and Andy Rooney (who performed a short monologue nearly identical to those on "60 Minutes" that would later make him a household word). & & In spite of the relatively small audience afforded the show by public television, the show's critical credibility was established almost immediately, winning an Emmy in 1970. This was followed by a word-of-mouth growth in popularity among discerning viewers, and the show's inclusion in the 1974 cult comedy film, "The Groove Tube." & & A fire at WNET destroyed the majority of the program's original broadcast prints and master tapes, and the series has never been available on a commercially viewable format.& & Included in the archive are:& & Numerous corrected typescripts by Marshall Efron and co-author Alfa-Betty Olsen, with their annotations throughout. Highlights includes scripts for sketches "Lemon Cream Pie" and "How to Write Your Own Famous Last Words."& & Eleven proposals for unproduced segments of the program.& & Six 16mm film reels in canisters with labels, and two Sony U-matic videocassette tapes in original labeled plastic containers. & & Eight photographs (8 x 10 inches) featuring Efron, with photo credits stamped on the verso of each. Three photographs (8 x 10 inches, 4 x 5 inches) of Efron taken by Paula Lippman, with her pencil notations on the versos; 2 photo stills (8 x 10) of Efron taken by Michael Dobo, with his ink notations on the versos; 2 promotional stills from PBS of Efron on the set (a junkyard) of the GADM; 1 still of Efron and the GADM design (created by Elinor Bunin, with her name and 1971 date below the design).& & Two issues of Newsweek, one issue of New York magazine, one newspaper article, and one issue of Image, all featuring reviews and commentary on the program.& & Press Releases (1970-1972) - approximately 100 photographically reproduced leaves from the PBS archive; Dream Machine stationery and Dream Machine travel receipts and budget for Marshall Efron's Auto Graveyard. Also discussed in detail are "compilation" episodes consisting of skits culled from the original episodes, which aired on PBS in the US and the BBC in the UK. Despite the fact that these are photocopies, it is easy to imagine that the original documentation is either lost or heretofore unavailable for reference.& & Material Near Fine in general.& & Complete collation details available on request.
