État de neuf. Voici ce qu’écrivait dans Libération du 9 janvier 2001, Eric Lioret au lendemain de la mort de Thirion : «L'écrivain surréaliste André Thirion, né en 1907 à Baccarat, en Meurthe-et-Moselle, est décédé jeudi dernier à Levallois-Perret. Après avoir été syndicaliste puis communiste (il adhère au parti en 1925), ses convictions politiques et son tempérament rebelle l'entraînent dans l'aventure surréaliste en 1928. Il collabore ainsi activement à la revue Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution, se bat pour le film de Buñuel l'Age d'or (1930), signe des manifestes tels que Ne visitez pas l'Exposition coloniale (1931) ou s'engage contre Aragon lorsque ce dernier veut quitter le surréalisme au profit du communisme, en 1932. Les années 30 le voient s'éloigner du parti et il rejoint durant la guerre la résistance gaulliste, avant de devenir député du XXe arrondissement de Paris sous l'étiquette RPF. Son principal ouvrage, une autobiographie, Révolutionnaires sans révolution, retrace cette période et constitue, par ses portraits sans concession, un document précieux sur le groupe surréaliste. Il continue ce travail de mémorialiste mordant avec Béatrice (1975), qui raconte le passage de la IVe à la Ve République sous forme de mélodrame, ou Révisions déchirantes (1987), qui assure la défense de Breton et assassine à nouveau Aragon. Mais Thirion est aussi connu pour un des romans politico-érotiques qui firent les beaux jours de la contre-culture: le Grand ordinaire, sa première fiction, écrite en 1943 et qui trouva son public en 1970 aux éditions Losfeld. Inscribed by Matthiessen to his parents, "with much love" and signed "Pete." An excellent family association copy. This is the correct first edition, in brown cloth, in the first issue dust jacket with both the $17.50 price and the introductory $14.95 price, good until October 25, 1972. After the date mentioned, the first issue jackets were clipped so that only the higher price showed; later jackets were unclipped and only had the higher price. Foxing to endpages and prelims; thus very good in a near fine dust jacket with wear at the corners. First Edition. Hardcover.

Presents some of the most hauntingly beautiful auto-erotic photographs ever taken by an artist/photographer who was truly way ahead of his time. The challenge Molinier poses is fundamental: Is he an artist or not? That is to say, his fetishism can be easily dismissed and its transcendent beauty denied. His is the work of someone who was, on the outside, a conventionally handsome and refined French gentleman. His unsettling work, which he produced for his own private pleasure, belies this mask and rejects it. Because he also created remarkable etchings and paintings, Pierre Molinier did not think of himself primarily as a photographer but as an artist who fully realized his vision through photography. He shot carefully staged photographic tableaux that utilized mannequins and other props. The latter remind us of his obsession with sex as pure fantasy, as something which begins and ends as a fantasy that can never be achieved in reality. In the process, he created some of the most disturbingly beautiful photographs of the 20th century. Molinier proves that the erotic (as opposed to the pornographic) is ultimately about beauty (rather than about sex), an aesthetic (rather than a sexual) experience. Lucas Samaras, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Ellen von Unwerth, among many others, would not be possible without Molinier's pioneering example. Square spine (not rounded spine as normally found on the first printing and the replacement second printing). Illustrated with full-page duotones of photographs by Arbus, as well as one photo of herself. Rare variant of the second print run, containing an image that was later withdrawn due to model-release issues: Two girls in identical raincoats, Central Park, N.Y.C. 1969. The entire second press run was to be destroyed by the publishers prior to distribution for this reason. 15 pages of text, edited from tape recordings of a series of classes Arbus gave in 1971 as well as from some interviews and some of her writings. Published in conjunction with the 1972 retrospective staged by MoMA curator John Szarkowski, which attracted more than 7 million viewers. Her 1967 photograph Identical Twins, which illustrates the front cover as well as the dj of this work, is tenth on the list of most expensive photographs. This photo was removed from later printings. Dust jacket verso lightly foxed throughout and small closed tear inside back upper left, at flap crease. Small sticker of previous bookseller on free front endpaper. Slight discoloration to top edge of cover. Overall, fine condition.
