        Kiroku, Issues 1 - 5

Self Published 1972 - The first five issues of Moriyama's self-published photo-journal, Kiroku ("record"), published from 1972 - 1973 in glossy printed wrappers (issues 1 - 4) and paper wrappers (issue 5). Moriyama halted production of this journal in the Spring of 1973 to focus on exhibiting his works, restarting the kiroku project again 33 years later in 2006. With very few copies of each issue printed in 1972 and 1973, a full set of issues 1 through 5 is one of the great rarities of Japanese photography. Each of the copies offered here is complete and in very good condition, with typical wear but no major issues. If you require additional photos of the books please feel free to inquire. An extremely important set, offered here at a reasonable price (this set typically sells for about $50,000, either in the US or Japan, when a set surfaces at all).         Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph

1972: Aperture. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (with "Two girls in identical raincoats" image) of the classic collection of the photographs of Diane Arbus. Following Arbus's suicide in 1971, the curator of MOMA, John Szarkowski, began work on staging a major retrospective of Arbus's work. At first there was little interest in the project and the proposal for the accompanying catalog was rejected by every major publishing house before Aperture magazine's Michael E. Hoffman agreed to print the book. The resulting MOMA retrospective was a huge success, traveling throughout North America and attended by over seven million people; the corresponding book, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph, has since become one of the most influential photography books ever produced, cementing Arbus's reputation as one of the most original and expressive photographers of her time. Roth 101. Millerton, New York: Aperture, (1972). Quarto, original boards with photograph on front panel, original dust jacket. Book near-fine and remarkably without the foxing at the edges so common with this title; a few spots and smudges to text. Owner (from 1972) inscription on front pastedown (largely hidden behind front flap of jacket). Bright dust jacket with small chip at top of spine, small closed tear at top of rear panel, thin stray mark on spine. A very good copy of inarguably one of the most important American photobooks.

Spiral Spring Mechanism Marilyn. [Possibly also referred to as 'Clockwork Marilyn']

Tokyo: Gallery Décor, 1972. One print is lightly foxed, especially at the verso; otherwise a fine and fresh set housed in a button-bound portfolio and the original cardboard mailing box. Very rare: individual prints surface intermittently in Japan, but our research in Japan has turned up evidence that only one complete set has been sold in recent memory. Tanaami has been the beneficiary of widespread critical acclaim in the past five years, with several major retrospectives mounted in Japan.. Deluxe Edition. Portfolio with twelve original silkscreen prints, all 14 1/4 X 20 1/4 inches on sheets measuring 18 1/2 X 24 1/2 inches. Number 22 of 55 numbered copies, with each printed, SIGNED, and numbered by Tanaami. There is also an introductory sheet and colophon sheet, which is itself SIGNED and numbered accordingly. Tanaami is regarded as one of the leading pop artists of postwar Japan, rivaled only by Tadanori Yokoo. These silkscreens show his unique psychedelic style, with a raucous mixture of photography, typography, pornography and cacophonous design, all seen through the prism of the sixties, with much of it erotic and highly charged with the prevailing themes of the era, including the Vietnam War, and the proliferation of sex, drugs and rock and roll within both Japanese and American culture. These prints in particular highlight the artist's fascination with America, and reflect the belief, prevalent in Japan, that Tanaami is the Japanese Warhol.

"The collection of thirteen codices found in upper Egypt near Nag Hammadi in 1946 is one of the major archaeological discoveries of our time. Apparently the library of a Gnostic community in late antiquity, the codices are a repository of important spiritual materials from throughout the ancient world. Hence a thorough analysis of this new material is indispensable for any proper understanding of the history of religions in this period. The rich documentation which the codices add to early Coptic text material promises to raise to a new precision the historical analysis of that language. This edition presents collotype reproductions in natural size of all folios of the thirteen codices as well as reproductions of the covers and photographs previously taken of fragments that are now lost."         Signed souvenir postcard for the 1972 World Chess Championship match played by Robert J. Fischer against Boris Spassky

[Reykjavík:] Litbrá Offset,, 1972. Giant" postcard (221 x 147 mm) featuring both players and views of Iceland. A couple of very faint waterstains to verso, light creases to top half. Overall excellent. Signed by Robert J. Fischer on the recto. The 1972 chess world championship final was the culmination of Fischer's utterly brilliant career as a chess grandmaster - aged thirteen he had already won the "Game of the Century". He would now be able to add world champion to his numerous titles. Playing out Cold War tensions the game between Fischer from the US and Boris Spassky from Soviet Russia generated public interest on a scale not seen before or since. Twenty years after his 1972 victory Fischer played an unofficial rematch against Spassky and won again.

        Relativistic equations in quantum mechanics

, 1972. 1972. <p>Wigner, Eugene Paul (1902-95). Relativisitic equations in quantum mechanics. Autograph manuscript. 23ff. N.p., n.d. [1972]. 282 x 216 mm. First leaf a bit toned, small rust-stain from paper clip on first and last leaves, but very good otherwise. From the library of historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008).</p> <p>The manuscript of Wigner&#146;s lecture delivered at the 1972 Symposium on the Development of the Physicist&#146;s Conception of Nature, organized by Jagdish Mehra and Abdus Salam in honor of Paul Dirac&#146;s seventieth birthday. The manuscript bears a number of corrections and a few editorial notes in the margins, and several of its sheets have been put together by the &#147;cut-and-paste&#148; method to incorporate Wigner&#146;s more extensive revisions. Wigner&#146;s lecture was subsequently published on pp. 320-329 of The Physicist&#146;s Conception of Nature (1973), the festschrift volume, edited by Mehra, prepared from the 43 lectures delivered at the symposium.</p> <p>Wigner, who shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in physics for his discovery and application of fundamental principles of symmetry to the theory of atomic nuclei particles, played an essential role in the development of quantum and nuclear physics. In 1926-27 he and Heisenberg pioneered the first explicit applications of group-theoretical methods to the physical problems of many-electron systems; in 1927 he introduced the idea of parity as a conserved property of nuclear reactions; between 1928 and 1932 he and John von Neumann developed the theory of energy levels in atoms on the basis of group theory; and in 1931 he published a classic book on group theory and quantum mechanics (Gruppentheorie und ihre Anwendung auf die Quantenmechanik der Atomspektren), the first work on this subject to be written by a physicist. In 1932 Wigner devised the &#147;Wigner function&#148; of momenta and coordinates, which has become a major tool in the study of quantum chaos; the following year he and his student Frederick Seitz provided a basis for solid state physics in their method of treating electron wavefunctions in a solid; and in 1936 he and Gregory Breit worked out the &#147;Breit-Wigner&#148; formula explaining neutron absorption by a compound nucleus. Wigner also played an important role in the United States&#146; development of the atomic bomb and nuclear reactors, working on the Manhattan Project during World War II and serving as director of the AEC Laboratory at Oak Ridge in 1946-47. </p>
