(a. d. Br. v. 9.         I Travestiti

Rome: Essedi Editrice. (1972). First. Large quarto. Texts by Carmi and Elvio Fachinelli. Design by Giancarlo Liprandi. Photographically illustrated glossy paper over boards. [4], 163, [1]pp. Modest edgewear to the extremities of the spine and corners, a very good copy, issued without dustwrapper. Carmi's arresting, sympathetic, but unblinking photographs of the transvestite subculture in the old Jewish Quarter of Genoa, Italy, which became a ghetto for both transvestites and transsexuals, taken between 1965 and 1971. The combination of the heavy photographic paperstock and the insufficiently strong binding, resulted in most copies disintegrating after a few viewings. This copy shows wear, but considering the cheap binding and the scarcity of the book, this is an exceptional copy. Parr & Badger Volume 1, pg. 228. .

Handmade Illustrated Books of Ludwig and George Wronkow

1972-1981. Sixteen handmade illustrated books, dated 1972-1981, from brothers Ludwig and George Wronkow, German-Jewish emigres who worked as editors for the New York-based German-speaking newspaper Aufbau. Each book is written in German and profusely decorated with color drawings, tipped in photographs, canceled checks, embellished newspaper clippings, collages, and various found objects, such as pins, cut-up playing cards, miniature hats and electronics components, all illustrating stories, poems, and political commentary.Ludwig and George were journalists who worked for the left-leaning Mosse publishing house in Berlin during the 1920s and 1930s, with Ludwig also contributing cartoons. With the rise of Hitler in 1933, they fled Germany. They came first to Paris, where they worked in radio and newsprint before finally emigrating to the U.S. in 1938. Upon their arrival they began writing for Aufbau, a German-Jewish newsletter that became the leading international anti-Nazi publication with contributions from many noted exiles such as Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, and Stefan Zweig. In the year immediately after the war, the newspaper was the leading source for information on Jewish survivors. The brothers wrote for the newspaper for several decades, with Ludwig eventually becoming its editor-in-chief. He died in 1982 at age 80. George's late 1960s contributions to the Swiss paper Die Tat were collected in the 1969 book Leben mit dem Hass [Live with the Hate], and his autobiography, Kleiner Mann In Groen Zeiten: Reportagen Eines Lebens [Little Man in Big Times: Reports of a Life] was published posthumously in 2008. He died in 1989 at age 84.Each book is an oblong quarto with spiral bindings, except for two with velvet wrappers and string tied pages. The page count varies but most average 24pp., some with blank versos. They average near fine with some wear to the extremities and nearly all with some loss or detached drawings, though this is minimal and usually the item is still present. Six of the books appear to be from Ludwig and the rest from George. Many of the stories feature a hat theme, which appears to be the annual birthday gift the brothers gave to one another. How these illustrated books factor into that annual gift isn't clear but several of the books contained Signed checks from one brother to the other for the price of a hat. A few of the most notable highlights from the books are a story about hats fleeing Europe from the Nazis, several pages concerning Nixon's impeachment, and the 1977 book from Ludwig which features not only especially well-illustrated drawings but a die-cut cover revealing a drawing found on the first page.A delightfully quirky and beautiful set of gift books from two German-Jewish brothers who escaped the Nazis and devoted their lives to helping the scattered Jewish survivors of post-war Europe. .

Original artwork of a Grizzly Bear in mountainous landscape

      - An evocative image of the wilderness of North America and one of its most iconic inhabitants. James Carter Beard, the son of artist James Henry Beard, was born in Cincinnati, but lived and worked in New York, exhibiting with the Brooklyn Art Association. Much of his work was carried out in grey wash as he did a great deal of work for magazines and books that did not require colour. The exact method he employed for the present work is not clear, but he seems to have had an image of a bear printed (photographically) without a background. He then added the surroundings using both gouache and wash, placing the bear in a finely observed naturalistic setting. He then worked on the bear, adding detail, particularly to the head and the paws, before signing his name twice at the lower right corner: once in a brown tone, and again over the top in black. This combination of techniques suggest that this work was created as artwork for an illustration or a plate in a book or magazine: unfortunately it has not been possible to identify the publication. Cf. Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, Catalog of the Collection (1972); cf. D. Dawdy, Artists of the American West (1985); cf. C.S. Marlor. The History of the Brooklyn Art Association (1970). Gouache and wash over a partial photographic base, signed at the lower right corner, on paper, laid down onto board. Sheet size: 24 x 31 3/4 inches. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Huckleberry Finn. Eight Signed Color Lithographs Based Upon Incidents in the Mark Twain Novel.

Paris Fernand Mourlot 1972 - One of only 200 suites of full-color, 25 by 19 3/4-inch lithographs based on the artist's illustrations for the 1940 Heritage Press edition of the Twain classic. When he was commissioned in 1935 to illustrate the Press's new editions of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, Rockwell visited Hannibal, Missouri, to get a feel for the place where Twain grew up. Expecting urban sprawl to have made the town unrecognizable as the place Twain wrote about, Rockwell found exactly the opposite to be true. In his autobiography, he commented that Hannibal had turned Mark Twain into a kind of cottage industry by naming everything from markets to hotels to barber shops after him. Today, that list would include the Mark Twain Museum, where a number of Rockwell's own paintings for Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer hang on display. It is fitting that Rockwell, whose genius lay in his ability to portray an idealized vision of small-town America, and whose paintings often featured children, should have illustrated Huck Finn, the quintessential American coming-of-age tale. At the same time, it is perhaps a surprise that a man who admitted an aversion to life's rougher, seedier aspects would illustrate a novel with such an unsavory cast of characters including murderers, swindlers, drunkards, and thieves. This suite of illustrations, then, represents an intriguing union of two visionary artists whose varying, though essentially sympathetic, depictions of the American experience endure to this day. The eight illustrations in this suite include: "Then Miss Watson took me in the closet and prayed"; "Jim got down on his knees"; "Miss Mary Jane"; "My hands shook"; "Your eyes is lookin'"; "Then for three minutes, or maybe four"; "There warn't no harm in them"; and "When I lit my candle." All are printed on handmade Velin d'Arches paper and signed by the artist in a bold hand in the lower right corner. Housed in a tan canvas portfolio with tie straps. Portfolio with the usual "Huckelberry" misspelling to the front cover. Prints and portfolio very fine. (Claridge, pp.258-260). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Photosynthesis, Two Centuries After Its Discovery By Joseph Priestley: Proceedings of the IInd International Congress on Photosynthesis Research, Stresa, June 24-29, 1971 [ Volume I, II, and III: Complete Three-Volume Set ]

Dr. W. Junk N.V. Publishers, The Hague 1972 - A good, ex-library copy of the complete 3-volume hard cover edition, lacking dust-jacket, perhaps as issued. Save for the customary library treatments to the endpapers and the base of the spine the text of each volume is unmarked, pristine. The bindings are still quite bright and fresh in appearance, though the upper-left corner of the front board of volume III has a faint damp-stain, with consequent slight wrinkling to adjacent front endpages. A sharp set. [Please note: Due to the size and weight of the volumes extra shipping will required depending on the destination and speed of delivery requested. Quotations gladly provided. International buyers may especially wish to inquire.] [Attributes: Hard Cover]
