        To the Finland Station

      - Fourteen page manuscript of V. S. Pritchett’s review of the 1972 reissue of Edmund Wilson’s 1940 masterpiece “To the Finland Station”; six page holograph manuscript (earliest draft) and eight page typed manuscript, with extensive corrections, which Pritchett published as “Edmund Wilson” in ”The New Yorker” (December 23, 1972, pp. 75-78). The essay also appeared as “Towards Revolution: Edmund Wilson” in Pritchett’s “Complete Collected Essays” (New York: Random House, 1991). A remarkable manuscript review of what Pritchett believed was “perhaps the only book on the grand scale to come out of the Thirties,” which “never loses sight of the pain gnawing at the heart of the human conscience that Wilson’s discursive record, untouched by rhetoric, achieves pages one can only call noble” [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Tree Where Man Was Born [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Dutton. 1972. A nonfiction book about Africa, with text by Matthiessen and photographs by Eliot Porter (whose contribution to the book is given its own, separate title -- The African Experience). Band I (Erste Auflage 1974): Abhandlungen (3 Teilbände). Learning from Las Vegas.

MIT Press, Cambridge, MA 1972 - First edition of this groundbreaking work. Folio, original blue cloth with illustrated frontispiece. Signed by both Robert Venturi (who has added a drawing of Venturi's Mother's House) and Denise Scott Brown. Boards lightly rubbed; in near fine condition. Lacking the rare glassine dust jacket. A very sharp copy. "Their insight and analysis, reasoned back through the history of style and symbolism and forward to the recognition of a new kind of building that responds directly to speed, mobility, the superhighway and changing life styles, is the kind of art history and theory that is rarely produced. The rapid evolution of modern architecture from Le Corbusier to Brazil to Miami to the roadside motel in a brief 40-year span, with all the behavioral esthetics involved, is something neither architect nor historian has deigned to notice" (The New York Times).
