A revealing and dramatic correspondence of 47 letters from Meyer Lansky on his struggle to gain Israeli citizenship following his deportation from Israel in 1972

"A large archive of 48 Autograph Letters Signed, ""Meyer,"" 82 pp. total, [Miami], November 21, 1972 to February 10, 1981 to Joseph (Yoskeh) Sheiner, a member of the Israeli Security Agency and Prime Minister Ben Gurion's security director in the 1960s. It was Sheiner who accompanied Lansky on his infamous flight from Israel to Switzerland and South America. Unable to secure asylum, Lansky ultimately returned to Miami where he was promptly arrested by the F.B.I. on an outstanding 1971 bench warrant to appear in Federal Court in Miami. The archive also includes two ALsS from Thelma ""Teddy"" Sheer Lansky (1907-1997), both addressed to Sheiner, as well two other letters to Sheiner from family friends together with relevant news clippings and related ephemera. Some toning to a few examples with expected mailing folds, else in overall very good to fine condition.Lansky's letters to his Israeli confidant span the final chapter of Lansky's storied career???from his return to Miami in November 1972 to a year before his death in 1982. The letters reveal not only a cagey businessman who displayed keen insight into people's strengths and weaknesses, unafraid to angrily lash out at those who would cross him, but also a man with deep compassion and love for his family, friends, and the State of Israel. The first letter in the correspondence is written only weeks after Lansky's return to Miami following his quixotic struggle to obtain Israeli citizenship under the nation's law of return, allowing any Jew to settle in the country. However the Israeli government reserved the right to reject the applications of known criminals???an issue that was hotly disputed by Lansky. After several years of wrangling, Israel demanded that he leave the country. Lansky, with his travelling companion Sheiner (whom Lansky familiarly addressed by his Hebrew first name, Yoskeh), first flew to Switzerland where he was promptly denied entry. They then flew to South America, offering $1,000,000 to any nation who would grant him asylum. Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil and Panama all rejected his offer. Lansky landed in Miami on November 7 and was promptly arrested. Within nine hours, he was free on $225,000 bail. (NYT, Nov. 8, 1972, p. 49). Recalling the intense media and police attention he received on his arrival at Miami International Airport, he writes on November 21, ""I'm interested to know how you were treated back home after your eventful trip. My arrival brought out the band. I wonder if any police were left to guard the President?... What concerns me most now is you! How you will be treated for taking on this assignment from my lawyer to travel with me?"" Throughout 1973 Lansky provides updates on his trial in Miami. On August 9, he reported on his trial for tax evasion: ""???My most important matter I won??? I just wanted to win this frame up and I'm sure it will be same with the other one, most likely without a trial. They well k[n]ow that I'm innocent but they are afraid to let go now because it would be an admission of her guilt. I have to pay for it through the nose. I heard that my victory got very little attention in your press, my loss received much more attention???"" The following year, Lansky won an appeal for a contempt conviction, which he gleefully reported to Yoskeh on June 28, 1974: ""Fifteen minutes after our telephone conversation Dave Rosen called to tell me that my contempt conviction was removed???"" However, a week later, ""they gave me a subpoena jus[t] an hour ago all for the purpose of harassment???"" Despite his legal victories, Lansky had not forgotten how he had been treated by Israeli officials and attorneys, adding: ""Now with the exposure of Mitchell and Watergate would it not be a good time to expose Shapiro? We should quote his conversation with that lawyer from Haifa. Please send the name of the Haifa lawyer. I will try to do something from here to expose Shapiro and Berg [sic]???"" Shapiro was Justice Shapiro who heard one of Lansky's appeals. The latter person mentioned is most likely Dr. Yosef Burg, the Minister of Internal Affairs to whom numerous appeals were made on Lansky's behalf. The archive even includes a photocopy of Meyer's son Paul Lansky's October 9, 1972 letter to Burg highlighting the numerous financial contributions Meyer made to the State of Israel over the years and accusing the government of hypocrisy: ""Did Israel not accept assistance from people like my Dad about whom unfavorable comments had been made? When did they not accept such assistance?"" Lansky cast much of the blame on an inept attorney from Haifa: ""???he received plenty of money for doing nothing???"" (March 11, 1974) Indeed, despite his rejection by Israel, Lansky still wanted to assist the Jewish State. On December 20, 1972 he commented, ""I was much disheartened when I read the article in our newspapers about the $10000 reward for the Eichman[n] case. I wish I would have known about it I would raise the money myself before having to see the Israel[i] Government exposed in it at this time."" Following the Yom-Kippur War the following year, Lansky was very emotional. Writing on August 20, 1973, ""???Say what you may and blame whomever you want???you are a great people a heroic people. The World will never forget when History is written the Military Strategy this little Army has shown. Also the Military bravery of its men. We saw a picture on television of a group of prisoners with a Torah; that picture will never leave my mind. If only I could be with those boys. If it would be just to chear [sic] them up???."" Lansky also brings to bear his own expertise in banking to discuss recent revelations on a scandal in the Israeli Finance ministry, writing in December 1973: ""I was terribly saddened of Israel encumbering herself at this time. As I understand this Banker in the past made a lot of money for Israel. What is the real truth? Did they or (he the Banker) try to do well for Israel and failed or was there just a personal gain interest. I was never impressed with the financial planners of Israel. Their plans was [sic] fitting for a country without a border enemy. I saw a lot of faults; I wasn't in a position to comment, I would have been easily misunderstood. What occurred with the greatness of Israel occurred with other nations in the past. After you people gave your sweat and blood in came the material, monetary geniuses. Influenced your leaders with business thoughts they in return not wittingly lulled the people to sleep with better times around the corner. The result of the Yom-Kippur debacle. No doubt the suffering is great in Israel. I can see what is going on here, how much worse it is for you people. This worries me for the Jews future. With all this facing us let us go on the same as always with plenty of courage???"" Following the end of Lansky's legal troubles at the end of 1974, he renewed his efforts to obtain a visa to settle in Israel. Lansky had many advocates attempting to help in this effort, but their efforts all fell short. One individual, ""Raffy,"" had especially disappointed Lansky, and his name emerges in numerous letters, for example: ""I'm really disappointed in Raffy, not having the decency to send a note to me in all this time. I have been very generous with Raffy he visited me the morning of the day I was leaving. 'He said to me: I'm responsible for bringing you here I promise you I will continue to search [for] a way to bring you back.' I wonder if he ever gave it a second thought? From results never???"" Raffy did finally come around, and suggested a publicity campaign in Israel to put pressure on the Israeli government to admit Lansky: ""???I'm anxious to visit Israel but not on the strength of publicity. Publicity will not help my return. I also don't have a desire to create any friction in Israel. Israel has enough problems without me. I also don't intend to beg for permission to visit Israel. Regardless of what may be the outcome my second land is Israel, I would love to visit my friends again and next year in Jerusalem."" (February 17, 1975). Lansky was shy of publicity in general. Following his return from Israel, he granted one interview ""against my wishes and inner judgment."" The experience convinced him of the utility of writing his own memoir, but admitted ""I'm sure no one will want to publish it. The establishment will not like what I have to say about them."" Others had no qualms writing about Lansky. Commenting on the publication of Dennis Eisenberg's biography, Meyer Lansky: Mogul of the Mob, onSeptember 16, 1979, Lansky wrote to Sheiner ""My purpose of the letter is to enlighten you about the weasels book. It is all rehash of what you read before in Magazines, newspapers and what he may have collected in newspaper[']s morgues, he writes it as if it is a personal story. All this doesn't bother me; what does bother me why he had to inject your name that you were my body guard. The people I really met him through he doesn't mention, why? I don[']t understand. He states personal conversation with me, but he doesn't mention the gratuities he received from me and the good people I introduced him to."" Toward the end of his life, through the efforts of other advocates, who Lansky described as ""well meaning, but â?¦ naïve,"" there was renewed hope that he could at least visit Israel. When Israel finally granted a visa, it came with a condition from the Interior Affairs minister Yosef Burg that he post a bond of over $100,000 during his stay. Lansky was furious, lashing out on November 15, 1980: ""â?¦ I will not visit Israel under conditions. The only condition I would accept is: police protection from Burg's criminal mob. Fuck Burg and his restrictions. My well meaning lawyer can be naïve, but I am not. Time is running out for my desire to make trips both physically and financiallyâ?¦"" Lansky never returned to Israel. By 1981 he was resigned never to return. Citing his own ill health and that of his wife, Lansky concluded on February 10, 1981 ""My days of seeking to visit Israel are over, health is not on our side."" While the media often portrayed Lansky's bid for Israeli citizenship a simple ploy to escape justice, the correspondence reveals that he in fact had a deep love and admiration for the nation and its people. The few short years he spent there had an enormous effect on the reputed mobster. In all the correspondence paints Lansky, the center of countless conspiracy theories and mob legends, as a human being with strong opinions as well as a deep compassion for his friends and family. In nearly all of the letters, Lansky asks after friends back in Israel and updates Yoskeh on his own family's trials and tribulations. In all, this archive presents a nuanced and detailed portrait of a man who was so often portrayed so one-dimensionally in the press, allowing the reader a deeper understanding of this man. "

        Typed Letter - Signed

1972 - Typed letter personally signed by Lillian Gish on her personal letterhead dated January 16, 1972. The letter is addressed "Dear John Firca, Thank you for your most kind letter which I received upon my return from Austria and due to the fact that I was abroad unfortunately I was unable to see any of my dear friend, Mary Pickford's films. in regards to obtaining silent films, there is a company called Blackhawk which deals in these films. Enclosed is a brochure from my touring program on the art of film - 1900-1928 - which takes me to colleges and universities throughout the United States which I thought might be of interest to you. With every fond wish, In remembrance, Lillian Gish". Fine Condition. She was the archetypal silent film heroine -- the delicate damsel in distress, fainting on an ice floe, cowering before a brutal bounder, languishing in a garret. She has been called "the first lady of the silent screen," and film director D.W. Griffith extolled her "exquisite, ethereal beauty." She was Lillian Gish, the star of movies, television, radio, and the stage for nearly all of the 20th century. Gish was born in Springfield, Ohio in October of 1896. She and her sister grew up in the theater, performing in melodramas for $10 a week. Beginning at the age of five, she performed in New York and with a traveling road company. From that young age Gish loved the theater, calling it a "beautiful, kind, generous, unselfish world." Before she was ten she had danced with Sarah Bernhardt in New York, and in 1912 had her film debut in D.W. Griffith's AN UNSEEN ENEMY. In the years they worked together, Gish and Griffith formed one of film's famed collaborative teams. Sharing a passionate devotion to their work, they learned a great deal from each other. With her fragile, child-like beauty, Gish was the perfect Griffith heroine, starring in many of his most famous films. While working with Griffith, Gish would shoot a film in short intensive sessions. Of that time, Gish recalled, "We worked twelve hours a day, seven days a week, and we liked it because it was so interesting . We were all one family. We were after one thing: to get whatever that was up on the canvas perfect." Her earliest films (and her actor's education) were all done with Griffith. Among her more than two dozen films with him were THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915), INTOLERANCE (1916), BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919), WAY DOWN EAST (1919) and ORPHANS OF THE STORM (1922). Griffith's visionary work expanded the possibilities of the medium, and for Gish this was a perfect testing ground for her budding talents. His long films and spontaneous directing approach gave Gish the opportunity to experiment with diverse elements in her acting style. Many of her trademark wistful gestures and contemplative looks were first tested in front of Griffith's camera. By 1924, Gish had left Griffith for MGM, who had offered her an astounding $800,000 contract. At MGM she not only starred in, but made substantial contributions to, the production of LA BOHEME (1926), THE SCARLET LETTER (1926), and THE WIND (1928). In the 1930s problems with the studio prompted Gish to leave Hollywood and resume a career on the stage. Performing in only a handful of films throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Gish concentrated on theater and radio. In 1948 she made her television debut in THE LATE CHRISTOPHER BEAN, and continued to appear on television regularly for the rest of her life. Gish's complex and subtle style had been a revelation during the silent era, and though her popularity dwindled after the 1930s, her talent never did. Over the years she appeared in such fine films as DUEL IN THE SUN (1946), THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955), THE UNFORGIVEN (1960), and her final work, THE WHALES OF AUGUST (1987). Gish's ability to dazzle viewers with a complex range of emotions gave them insight into each character and a sense of intimacy. It was this intimacy that, over eighty-five years, brought her many characters to life. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
