Home from Moscow after signing the first Strategic Arms Limitation Talks treaty, President Nixon tells a Congressman ?After any long journey, the best part is always coming home ?? ? on the day he signed this letter, June 23, 1972, he and his Chief of Staff Bob Haldeman formulated a plan to block investigations of the June 17th Watergate burglary by having the CIA falsely claim to the FBI that national security was involved; this taped conversation, known as the ?Smoking Gun,? made public on August 5, 1974, led to Nixon?s resignation on August 9th

Typed Letter Signed ?RN? as President, 1 page, 7? x 10.5?. On pale green White House stationery with blind embossed presidengtial seal at top center. Washington, D.C., June 23, 1972. To Congressman C.W. Bill Young. On verso, faint traces from prior display by Young in a photo album with self-adhesive pages. Fine condition. In full, ?After any long journey, the best part is always coming home, and your warm words of greeting made this occasion especially happy. In a very real sense, every American played a vital role in the success of the Moscow visit, for what was accomplished there reflected our people?s abiding desire for enduring peace. With the agreements we have an unparalleled opportunity to build such a structure of lasting peace, and from your letter I know I can count on your support in this great undertaking. Needless to say, I am deeply grateful for your expression of condidence and encouragement ...? On May 27, 1972, in Moscow, President Nixon and Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) agreements. At the time, these agreements were the most far-reaching attempts to control nuclear weapons ever. Three weeks later, Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate office building were burglarized. The House Judiciary Committee investigating the impeachment of President Nixon recommended three articles of impeachment: on July 27, 1974 (obstruction of justice), July 29th (abuse of power), and July 30th (contempt of Congress). On July 24, 1974, the Supreme Court had ruled unanimously that claims of executive privilege over tapes secretly recorded by President Nixon were void. On August 5, 1974, the White House released a previously unknown audio tape from June 23, 1972, the day the letter here offered was written. Known as the ?Smoking Gun? tape, recorded from 10:04 AM to 11:39 AM, less than a week after the Watergate break-in, it documented the initial stages of the cover-up, revealing Nixon meeting with his Chief of Staff Bob Haldeman in the Oval Office and formulating a plan to block investigations by having the CIA falsely claim to the FBI that national security was involved. It proved that Nixon had been involved in the cover-up from the beginning. Once the June 23rd tape was made public, all ten Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee who had voted against impeachment in committee announced that they would now vote for impeachment once the matter reached the House floor. Republican Senators Barry Goldwater and Hugh Scott told the President that there were not only enough votes in the Senate to convict him, but that no more than 15 Senators were willing to vote for acquittal. Facing certain impeachment in the House of Representatives and equally certain conviction in the Senate, three days after the June 23, 1972, tape was made public, Nixon announced his resignation on the evening of Thursday, August 8, 1974, to take effect at noon the next day. Republican Charles William (Bill) Young represented Florida in the House of Representatives from 1971-2014. At the time of his death, he was the senior Republican in Congress, having served over 42 years. Young was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions which nominated Nixon in 1968 and 1972, Ford in 1976, and Reagan in 1984. He had supported President Nixon during the House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearings publicly suggesting, ?Maybe a scenario has been worked out in advance,? with all 21 committee Democrats having already decided to impeach the President.

        Poesies Antillaises

1972. MATISSE, Henri. Poesies Antillaises. By John-Antoine Nau. 90 ff. Illustrated with 28 full-page portrait lithographs and a further 27 hors-texte ornaments by Matisse. Folio, loose as issued in the publisher's wrappers and cardboard slipcase. Paris: Mourlot, 1972.Matisse conceived of this work as an homage to his close friend John-Antoine Nau, and as he had done with Charles d'Orleans and Ronsard, he personally selected the poems that moved him most. As Matisse and the poet shared a common love for Martinique, Matisse worked from Martiniquan models as well as Malagashan models for the illustrations. Matisse prepared the illustrations for this book in 1946 and a contract to publish the edition was drawn up with Mourlot in 1947. Matisse worked on and off on the production maquette for Poesies Antillaises from 1950 to 1953. However, due in large measure to the artist's ill health at the end of his life, publication was delayed until almost twenty years after his death. One of 200 ordinary copies. A superb copy of this magnificent book which is similar in feel to Floril?ge, published by Skira in 1948.Duthuit 37.Manet to Hockney, No. 129.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE: THE POLITICAL THOUGHTS OF JOHN LENNON

London: New English Library. 1972. Uncorrected Proof Copy of this unpublished book. Original green printed card covers, in the dustwrapper. An excellent fine copy, without inscriptions or stamps. Illustrated throughout. Complete with the near fine lightly creased dustwrapper with the publisher's stamp reading 'Publication 20 APR 1972' to the underside. The dustwrapper illustration is by Tony Lamb, the image repeated without colour as an illustration in the book. The book, had it made publication, would almost certainly have been issued with a laminated hardcover or as a paperback original so the dustwrapper seen here is most likely the proof artwork for the upper and lower covers (a theory further supported by the very thin and completely blank flaps). Loosely laid in is the publisher's slip with the signature in red ink of Mark Howell, underneath which Peter Haining has signed and inscribed, 'The compiler of this little opportunist book which was never published!' Rare. We are aware of only two other copies, both lacking the dustwrapper / cover artwork; one copy in the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at Emory University, the other sold at auction in 2006 (front cover detached). Provenance: Mark Howell, editor New English Library; then to Peter Haining, editorial director New English Library. The best John Lennon book never published! Compiled from interviews given by Lennon over 1970 and 1971, the book was due to be published by New English Library in April 1972 but was pulled at the last minute. There are several theories for this, the strongest being that the publication might jeopardise John's already troublesome application for his US Green Card, a fight that started following his deportation in February 1972 up until being granted permanent residency in July 1976.         THE LIBERAL AND RADICAL YEAR BOOK / THE LIBERAL YEAR BOOK [A run of 41 uniformly-bound facsimile volumes]

Brighton, UK: The Harvster Press. Each volume bound in green buckram with gilt titles. 1972 to 1974. hb. 8vo, A few volumes are lightly scuffed & some have a former owner's bookplate on the front endpaper; else each in vg condition. . First published in 1887, ten years after the establishment in England of a national Liberal Party, this is an invaluable and comprehensive historical, statistical, and political publication. The volumes cover the years from 1887 to 1889, 1905 to 1932, and 1934 to 1939. Each volume was reproduced from the best original copy available, although the publishers (Harvester Press) observe in a prefatory note to the 1887 edition that "the original, in the British Museum, [had] been tightly re-bound and this has affected the reproduction of the inner margin of some few pages. Extensive inquiries have failed to locate an alternative copy for reprinting...." Each volume typically includes complete information on the organization of the Liberal Party, composition of both Houses of Parliament, the various government departments, a summary of legislation passed the previous year, a riding-by-riding account of the previous general election, or by-elections, including candidates and vote counts, and an enormous amount of financial and budgetary data. As this is a very heavy set, we ask that you consult with us prior to placing an order, as to the options and costs to ship. .

        Pirosmanachvili 1914

1972. PICASSO, Pablo. Pirosmanachvili 1914. By Iliazd. 36 pp. Illustrated with a signed dry-point etching by Picasso. Small folio, 322 x 230 mm, bound in original vellum, with yellow dust-wrapper and preserved in publisher's beige cloth chemise and slipcase. Paris: Iliazd, 1972. |~||~||~||~| First Edition thus. One of 78 copies printed on Japon ancien paper, signed in red pencil on the colophon by Iliazd and with the original etching signed by Picasso. The etching is a figure study of Russian artist Pirosmanachvili at his easel painting, an homage to Douanier Rousseau (Goeppert). The dry-point etching was printed by the Atelier Lacourière Frélaut. The story behind this Iliazd book is touching: Iliazd returned to his homeland in 1912 and met the painter Niko Pirosmanachvili (1862-1918). Iliazd was alarmed by the difficult economic straits that the painter was in and wrote a manifesto to promote his art; it was published in a local paper in 1914. "In the summer of 1971, Iliazd decided to reprint the article… he convinced his friend Picasso to create this frontispiece of the Georgian painter. The printing was completed and signed by December 1972, four months before Picasso's death" (Johnson, p. 165). Baer 2020. Bloch 2015. Goeppert 154. Artists' Books in the Modern Era 1870-2000, 94.

        La Ballade du Soldat

1972. ERNST, Max. La Ballade du Soldat. By G. Ribemont-Desaignes. Illustrated with 34 original colour lithographs (20 full page), by Max Ernst. Folio, 398 x 290 mm, loose as issued in the wrappers and cloth slipcase. Paris: Pierre Chave, 1972. |~||~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, one of 199 copies printed on Arches paper, signed by the artist and the author on the justification page. Max Ernst's illustration to the Ballade du Soldat is an intriguing and delicate body of works that confronts the theme of war and its effects on the human psyche. The artist tackles this complex subject through the approbation of common symbols to confront the issues of obedience to authority and humanity's struggle for power. A fine copy.         COLD GRADATIONS [INSCRIBED COPY]

SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author in very small, neat blue fountain pen ink on the title page: 'To Janet and Stuart Clarke with every good wish. Stanley Middleton.' ***First impression of the true first edition. ***Near fine in brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Grey front and rear endpapers. No inscriptions (other than the author's). Very slight small bump to tail of spine. Tiny hint of a bump to lower outer corner of front board and tiny light bump to top outer corner of rear board. A tiny very light and unobtrusive splash mark to bottom edge of text-block not affecting interior pages. Slight off-setting to endpapers. Pages clean and bright. Very slight foxing to 1mm edge of fore edge of rear endpaper and the merest hint of foxing to less than 1mm edge of last text page, not affecting the interior of those pages at all. Spine tight. Gilt titles bright. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped, showing original publisher's price of £1.95 net. Dustwrapper has a short 2cm closed tear and small crease to top edge of front panel and a small 1/2 cm closed tear to top edge of front panel at head of spine. Edges very slightly rubbed. Head of spine very slightly nicked and creased. Back panel of dustwrapper very slightly yellowed (being white background). Front panel and spine of dustwrapper bright. No fading. ***224 pages. 204mm x 136mm. ***'Old age is a notoriously difficult subject for the novelist to tackle, but one curiously appropriate to Stanley Middleton's sensitive, unsentimental, direct approach. Set, like all his widely praised novels, in a Midlands town, Cold Gradations is a study of James Mansfield, who has spent most of his life in a grammar-schoolroom, and is now lonely in retirement, conscious, after a serious heart-attack of his body's degeneration, half convinced of his uselessness, but trying to live vicariously, through the career of his highly successful, brilliant and loved son, David, a business tycoon who has forgotten his father's ideals. And yet Mansfield is constantly drawn into the lives of others in ways he sometimes resents, which fail to give him much comfort, but which, because of his lifetime's training, he cannot ignore. ***There is the marriage of David which is on the brink of breaking up, to Mansfield's regret rather than that of the estranged husband and wife. He is out of touch with them, yet manages to establish some rapport with their schoolgirl daughter. ***There are his 'neighbours', the Hapgoods, into whose tragic lives he is unwillingly drawn, though his intervention seems sadly without permanent effect. ***When we take our leave of Mansfield, he is still a sad figure, with a low regard for his own worth. Yet people turn to him with their troubles and seem to derive some comfort from his solid, academic attitude. He may feel old and useless, but in some strange way he is still necessary, still involving himself.' (Quote from inside front jacket blurb). ***'Mr Middleton tells his tale with a driving and subtle authority. His portrait of English provincial life, with its delicately graded snobberies, is masterly; it is in the honorable, even-tempered tradition of J. B. Priestley rather than that of the 'young angries' who swarmed out of this part of England in the 1950s. 'Brazen Prison' is a good and solid piece of close observation [Bruce Williamson in the Irish Times - review quote about 'Brazen Prison' by Stanley Middleton from back of jacket blurb]. ***A very scarce first impression of the true first edition in its original dustwrapper - in very nice collectable condition from this Booker Prize-winning author, especially rare to find signed and inscribed. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Dendritic Cells Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology

Springer. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 353 pages. Dimensions: 9.5in. x 6.4in. x 0.7in.The understanding of the role of dendritic cells (DCs) in immune responses has come a long way since Steinmann and colleagues described these cells in 1972. - tensive research during the intervening period has provided a good understanding of the complexity of the DC system and its pivotal role in immunity. It is also now clearer how different subsets of DCs interact and regulate each other and how DC populations affect the function of other cells of the immune system. The improved understanding of their role in immune response has led to the idea that modulation of DC functions by, for example, pharmacological agents could be used as a pot- tial therapeutic approach in some pathological conditions. The actual applicability and therapeutic potential of all these approaches is yet to be fully demonstrated but nonetheless, animal models of human diseases are proving to be very helpful in the evaluation of manipulated DCs as a new treatment in diseases like cancer, auto- munity or asthma. DCs are integral to the initiation and regulation of immune response (Banchereau et al. 2000). The outcome of antigen presentation by DCs is determined by their maturation status, which can be induced by their interaction with danger signals. To recognise a wide array of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP), DCs express a number of pattern recognition receptors (PRR) such as Toll-like rec- tors (TLRs) and C-type lectin receptors (CLR) that recognise structural components of pathogens and discriminate between self and non-self molecules.
