        Learning from Las Vegas.

MIT Press, Cambridge, MA 1972 - First edition of this groundbreaking work. Folio, original blue cloth with illustrated frontispiece. Signed by both Robert Venturi (who has added a drawing of Venturi's Mother's House) and Denise Scott Brown. Boards lightly rubbed; in near fine condition. Lacking the rare glassine dust jacket. A very sharp copy. "Their insight and analysis, reasoned back through the history of style and symbolism and forward to the recognition of a new kind of building that responds directly to speed, mobility, the superhighway and changing life styles, is the kind of art history and theory that is rarely produced. The rapid evolution of modern architecture from Le Corbusier to Brazil to Miami to the roadside motel in a brief 40-year span, with all the behavioral esthetics involved, is something neither architect nor historian has deigned to notice" (The New York Times).         PIERRE MOLINIER, LUI-MEME ("PIERRE MOLINIER, MYSELF") : ESSAY UBER DEN SURREALISTISCHEN HERMAPHRODITEN - Rare Fine/Publisher's Paper-Wrappered Copy of The Limited Edition

Munich, Germany: Rogner & Bernhard, 1972 - 1st Printing. 90 pages. Published in 1972. Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely beautiful production by Pierre Molinier and Rogner & Bernhard: Regular-sized volume format. Black cloth boards with black titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and photographic tableaux by Pierre Molinier. Essay by Peter Gorsen. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Munich, Germany to absolutely the highest standards. In publisher's original paper wrappers. In glassine DJ, as issued. Presents some of the most hauntingly beautiful auto-erotic photographs ever taken by an artist/photographer who was truly way ahead of his time. The challenge Molinier poses is fundamental: Is he an artist or not? That is to say, his fetishism can be easily dismissed and its transcendent beauty denied. His is the work of someone who was, on the outside, a conventionally handsome and refined French gentleman. His unsettling work, which he produced for his own private pleasure, belies this mask and rejects it. Because he also created remarkable etchings and paintings, Pierre Molinier did not think of himself primarily as a photographer but as an artist who fully realized his vision through photography. He shot carefully staged photographic tableaux that utilized mannequins and other props. The latter remind us of his obsession with sex as pure fantasy, as something which begins and ends as a fantasy that can never be achieved in reality. In the process, he created some of the most disturbingly beautiful photographs of the 20th century. Molinier proves that the erotic (as opposed to the pornographic) is ultimately about beauty (rather than about sex), an aesthetic (rather than a sexual) experience. Lucas Samaras, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Ellen von Unwerth, among many others, would not be possible without Molinier's pioneering example. A masterpiece, this is an absolute "must-have" title for Pierre Molinier and erotic art photography collectors. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few copies still available online, is still in the publisher's original paper wrappers, and is especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. We have not seen a more beautiful copy of a book that is usually found with flaws. A rare copy thus. 50 plates. Selected as one of the "Seminal Photography Books of the 20th Century" in the "Book of 101 Books". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 3920802950. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph [RARE VARIANT]

Aperture & The Museum of Modern Art, New York 1972 - 4to. np. Illustrated paper-covered boards with photographic dust jacket. Square spine (not rounded spine as normally found on the first printing and the replacement second printing). Illustrated with full-page duotones of photographs by Arbus, as well as one photo of herself. Rare variant of the second print run, containing an image that was later withdrawn due to model-release issues: Two girls in identical raincoats, Central Park, N.Y.C. 1969. The entire second press run was to be destroyed by the publishers prior to distribution for this reason. 15 pages of text, edited from tape recordings of a series of classes Arbus gave in 1971 as well as from some interviews and some of her writings. Published in conjunction with the 1972 retrospective staged by MoMA curator John Szarkowski, which attracted more than 7 million viewers. Her 1967 photograph Identical Twins, which illustrates the front cover as well as the dj of this work, is tenth on the list of most expensive photographs. This photo was removed from later printings. Dust jacket verso lightly foxed throughout and small closed tear inside back upper left, at flap crease. Small sticker of previous bookseller on free front endpaper. Slight discoloration to top edge of cover. Overall, fine condition. Diane Arbus (1923-1971), was noted for her portraits of people on the fringes of society such as prostitutes, transvestites, dwarfs, giants, as well as ordinary working class citizens in unconventional poses and settings. Arbus became the first American photographer to be exhibited at the Venice Biennale. "For me the subject of the picture is always more important than the picture. And more complicated. I do have a feeling for the print but I don't have a holy feeling for it. I really think what it is, is what it's about. I mean it has to be of something. And what it's of is always more remarkable than what it is." (Diane Arbus). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
