        James Beard's American Cookery.

Little Brown and Company, Boston 1972 - First edition of the author's classic work. Inscribed by James Beard. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Rare signed and inscribed by this legendary chef. The Washington Post has hailed American Cookery as ".his chef d'oeuvre.[it] should take a place on the narrow shelf reserved for major American culinary literature." And Time has called it "[t]he bible of American cooking by 'the king of gourmets'." "The beauty of this book is that it allows you . . . to experience firsthand what made James Beard special and unique. His voice can be heard through his no-nonsense recipes and the choices he made that celebrated even simple, humble dishes for what they were: good food" (Colicchio, 2010).       A.S. Barnes and Co., Inc., South Brunswick, NJ & New York 1972 - np (200pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. "The Face of Love" is one of the lesser-known yet still classic books of erotic imagery from the sixties. It is a compilation of the dark, grainy nudes of both women and couples by the Dutch photographer Sanne Sannes, who was tragically killed in 1967 in an automobile accident at the age of thirty. Like his "Sex a Go Go", this was a posthumously published (in 1972), and it includes appreciative essays by Jim Hughes and Louwrien Wijers. A most handsome copy of the book itself whose price-clipped dust jacket shows light overall wear, rubbing and soiling, some creasing and minor paper loss at the extremities, and a diagonal closed tear to the front panel starting at the spine. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         White Rabbit - VERY RARE Original Etching

Ralph Steadman 1972 - SIGNED AND EXTREMELY RARE! Brilliant signed etching of Lewis Carroll's White Rabbit character. Printed on an untrimmed sheet of thick rag paper. Magnificent and absolutely typical of this great artist's work. There is nothing sweet or twee about this print. Imposing size, 24" by 20". Like most of the etchings in this series this has some minor foxing to the upper right corner. This is signed by the artist and numbered 31 of only 50 copies in existence! This seems to be the ONLY EXAMPLE FOR SALE ONLINE. Obviously, this will be insured and sent in a heavy cardboard roll with sealed ends. One look and you can see why so many people chase this particular Steadman etching. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        8 x 10 Art Portfolio [14 Sheets]

Jeanie Black and Ely Raman], [New York 1972 - Artist publication. A collection of 14 sheets, all fine, housed in a toned folder splitting at several of the folds, very good. A portfolio magazine created by photographer Jeanie Black and Fluxus artist Ely Raman, published over nine issues between 1970-1972. This issue includes a "wallpaper piece" by Black, a "stamp drawing" by Raman, six penciled drawings from Mel Perkarsky's Landscape series, an onionskin tracing by Wertheim, a double-sided "Real Money" piece from Dana W. Atchley, and a "found art" photo of two mannequins. Asked many years later about the publication, Raman commented: "I realize that our historical consciousness (or self-consciousness?) was notably absent. The issues were not numbered or dated, the contributions often not properly identified (or footnoted) and we did not include serious (academic) verbiage identifying what we were doing in the context of art. Too busy making art to write or talk about it." The lack of documentation, the generic title, and the seeming randomness of each issue makes finding other copies of the publication difficult. While there are several sets at institutions, individual issues are quite scarce in the trade.

Watership Down ~ Proof Copy ~

Rex Collings 1972 - We are delghted to present for sale one of the few proof copies ever produced of 'Watership Down'. Rex Collings sent around ten copies to London reviewers in 1972. The tiny publishers who, legend has it, could not afford to even pay Adams' advance, produced the proof in a hurry. This is evident given the fact that the title of the book is handwritten on to the spine of the blue proof cover. There is no record of another proof selling within the last ten years and no other copy is presently available for sale at the time of writing. Given the fact that the book has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, this copy is perhaps the first time this story appeared in print. The book itself is bound into pale blue plain paper covers, onto which has been handwritten the title, presumably by the publisher or the recipient. It is in very good sound condition, has clearly been read more than once, the page edges are a bit grubby and the page corners are no longer sharp. This is in effect the text block of the true UK first edition. There is no fold-out map at the rear as there is in the proper trade edition, nor it appears has there ever been one. The dust jacket has clearly been with the book since new, it is the true first edition trade dust jacket (although the jacket is slightly longer than the book), in very good+ condition, with some wear to the folds and a couple of closed tears to the top of the spine where it has been handled carelessly, probably when removing it from a bookshelf. There is also a tiny piece missing to the right of the publisher's name, and the spine has faded a little also. A very scarce item and a must for any true Adams/Watership Down collector. THIS IS A SPECIAL SALE PRICE. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        To the Finland Station

      - Fourteen page manuscript of V. S. Pritchett’s review of the 1972 reissue of Edmund Wilson’s 1940 masterpiece “To the Finland Station”; six page holograph manuscript (earliest draft) and eight page typed manuscript, with extensive corrections, which Pritchett published as “Edmund Wilson” in ”The New Yorker” (December 23, 1972, pp. 75-78). The essay also appeared as “Towards Revolution: Edmund Wilson” in Pritchett’s “Complete Collected Essays” (New York: Random House, 1991). A remarkable manuscript review of what Pritchett believed was “perhaps the only book on the grand scale to come out of the Thirties,” which “never loses sight of the pain gnawing at the heart of the human conscience that Wilson’s discursive record, untouched by rhetoric, achieves pages one can only call noble” [Attributes: Signed Copy]
