Conquering Space. WITH: In Space. WITH: Cosmonauts USSR.

1972 - (TERESHKOVA, Valentina; LEONOV, Aleksei, et al.). [Conquering Space]. Moscow, 1972. WITH: [In Space: Nikolayev and Popoich]. [Moscow]: Pravda, 1963). WITH: Cosmonauts USSR. (Moscow: Education, 1977). Together, three volumes. Quarto, original blue cloth (In Space), pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers (Conquering Space); dust jackets. 16mo (3 by 4 inches), original blue cloth gilt, pictorial endpapers, dust jacket (Cosmonauts). $4750.Three profusely illustrated books documenting the Soviet space program, all inscribed and signed (in Cyrilic) to Soviet general Andrei Grigoryevitch Karas, first commander of the Soviet space troops: Conquering Space inscribed, "To Major General Comrade Andrey Grigorievich Karas. Kind regards from Pilots-Cosmonauts of the USSR, 1973," then signed by 13 cosmonauts, among them Alexei Leonov (the first human to walk in space) and Valentina Tereshkova (the first woman to fly in space). In Space warmly inscribed by Pavel Popovich (the pilot of Vostok 4), "To Andrey Grigorievich Karas and his family, with best wishes in life and work. Respectfully and gratefully, Popovich, 18 June 1963." Cosmonauts warmly inscribed in the year of publication by its author, "To Andrey Grigorievich Karas, with much warmth, M. Rebrov, 10 December 1977."When Sputnik I became the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth in October 1957, it sparked a decades-long "space race" between the Soviet Union and the United States. These three books commemorate many Soviet space achievementsâ€"highly politicized and exploited for propaganda value at the time (as were America's successes), but now widely appreciated as triumphs of human courage, imagination, and ingenuity. "In April 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first man to orbit the Earth aboard Vostok 1. He was joined by five fellow cosmonauts over the next two years, including Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space." With her nearly three-day, 48 orbit flight, she logged more flight time than all American astronauts before her combined. "The Vostok program was followed by the Voskhod program, which saw the Soviets achieving further milestones. The most important of these was achieved by the crew of Voshkod 2, when Aleksei Leonov performed the first ever space walk on March 18, 1965" (Royal Air Force Museum). A decade later, Leonov commanded Soyuz 19, the Soviet half of the first joint Soviet-American space mission. Andrian Nikolayev piloted Vostok 3 (August 11-15, 1962), orbiting Earth 64 times over four days. During the mission, he became the first person to make a live television broadcast from space. Pavel Popovich was launched in Vostok 4 a day after Vostok 3; the two craft did not rendezvous, but passed within 4 miles (6.5 km) of each other, the first time more than one manned spacecraft were in orbit simultaneously. Nikolayev returned to space (together with Vitali Sevastyanov) in Soyuz 9, a nearly 18-day flight in 1970 that broke both Nikolayev's Vostok 3 record and the record set by America's Gemini 7 in 1965. Nikolayev and Valentina Tereshkova married in 1963, in a ceremony at which Nikita Khrushchev himself presided. The couple divorced two decades later, but not before producing a daughter, the first person whose mother and father had both been exposed to space. Books generously illustrated with numerous black-and-white and color photographs; Conquering Space also with several folding plates, including depictions of a planned Soviet lunar landing. Texts in Cyrillic. All three volumes inscribed to Andrei Grigoryevitch Karas, the Soviet Air Force general who distinguished himself in World War II as commander of an artillery corps and later served as the first Commander of the Russian Space Troops (1964-79). Conquering Space signed by Tereshkova, Nikolayev, Popovich and Leonov, as well as Georgi Beregevoi, Valery Bykovsky, Anatoly Filipchenko, Viktor Gorbatko, Georgi Shonin, Vitaly Sevastyanov, Yevgeny Khrunov, Boris Volynov and Vladimir Statalov.         Christopher Columbus

Kentfield, California: The Allen Press, 1972. One of 140 copies. With decorative letters printed in red at the beginning of each of the Acts taken from an Italian book of 1475. Printed in red, ochre and black and with grey lettering running across the head of every single page. The type faces used are Goudy Thirty and Solemnis on Wookey Hole handmade paper. Folio, unsewn as issued in yellow handmade paper wrappers with red lettering, housed in the original blue cloth covered box with a yellow printed label on the upper cover. Spine of box a little faded, otherwise extremely good. Nikos Kazantzakis was the greatest Greek writer of the 20th Century. He died in 1957 and Christopher Columbus was one of several plays published posthumously by his widow. This 1969 English translation works very well. The Allens suggest that the whole philosophy of Kazantzakis is revealed in a remark Columbus makes to Queen Isabella: 'Let him exist, my Queen, who preserves the dreams of night by day, and struggles to put them into action! This is what Youth means; this is the meaning of Faith. Only in this way can the world grow!'. Original prospectus inserted loose. Booklabel of Clarence B. Hanson.

        The Summer Game.

New York: Viking Press, 1972. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Near fine in a near very good dust jacket that shows light wear. Inscribed by the author, "For ___ _____ yours in baseball! Roger Angell." The Summer Game, Roger Angell?'s first book on the sport, changed baseball writing forever. Thoughtful, funny, appreciative of the elegance of the game and the passions invested by players and fans, it goes beyond the usual sports reporter?'s beat to examine baseball?'s complex place in our American psyche. Between the miseries of the 1962 expansion Mets and a classic 1971 World Series between the Pirates and the Orioles, Angell finds baseball in the 1960s as a game in transition—marked by league expansion, uprooted franchises, the growing hegemony of television, the dominance of pitchers, uneasy relations between players and owners, and mounting competition from other sports for the fans?' dollars. Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Brooks Robinson, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Carl Yastrzemski, Tom Seaver, Jim Palmer, and Casey Stengel are seen here with fresh clarity and pleasure. Here is California baseball in full flower, the once-mighty Yankees in collapse, baseball in French (in Montreal), indoor baseball (at the Astrodome), and sweet spring baseball (in Florida)—as Angell observes, "Always, it seems, there is something more to be discovered about this game."

His @HistÛria, although less rigorously scientific and far less methodically ordered than that of his master Herculano, has value as history as well as literature" (p. 296). The work was left incomplete at Rebello da Silva's early death.Rebello da Silva was also responsible for beginning to collect the documents on Portugal's relations with the Vatican that comprise the massive @Corpo diplomatico portuguez (1862ñ1936), and he completed the Visconde de Santarem's @Quadro elementar das relaÁ?es polÌticas e diplom ticas de Portugal, which set out the Portuguese role in exploring the west coast of Africa. With letters from Bry to Jessner discussing O'Keeffe's health and the origins of this book, with proofs of the pre-publication text and proof photos for some of the plates in the book. In a typed signed letter in this collection dated December 1, 1972, Doris Bry writes to Lucie Jessner about the origins of this book, "Some Memories of Drawings": "You probably don't remember -- but when I did the big O'K Drawings portfolio (which you have) -- and which has ten drawings -- I also intended to do a second volume of another ten -- which I never did -- and probably will never be able to do. -- But I also wanted to do a little and inexpensive paperback of the 20 drawings available to anyone -- with perhaps a little something by O'K about them -- and a one page biography and bibliography in the back -- well designed and well printed, etc. -- about 8 x 6 or 6 x 5" -- something like that. "Now O'K has given me her comments -- text for the first ten -- she forgot about the second ten -- and I enclose a Xerox [included here]. -- If it isn't imposing on you, I'd be interested in your reaction -- if you have time to react. (This is text for the ten you have) "I feel one needs 20 to make a booklet that can be bound neatly -- and that ten doesn't work physically -- also it would be interesting if she would do another ten. "This was just given to me as a fait accompli -- we did not talk about it or work on it -- Some of the material under I (the first two pages of her text) -- she has said to me at times somewhat differently -- and perhaps better -- and I am tempted to try to get her to expand it a little -- but then I also think it might be best just to take it as it is. -- "as a reader would you be interested in this little book? or is it too sparse? or???" In 1973, Bry did succeed in getting the book produced and the result is a masterful collection of drawings O'Keeffe created between 1915 and 1963; illustrated with 21 charcoal and pencil drawings reproduced on Arches Silkscreen in 300-line screen offset lithography, each laid into a lettered folded leaf of Arches paper. Most drawings are accompanied by O'Keeffe's commentary -- her first writing intended for book publication -- explaining the details, setting, or inspiration for each work. Elegantly designed by Leonard Baskin and printed at The Meadows Press.

Also noteworthy in Bry's letters is a discussion of O'Keeffe's health, specifically her battle with macular degeneration, which began to strip O'Keeffe of her central vision in 1972. In an autograph letter dated May 8, 1972, Bry writes: "Much is quite terrible -- beyond words -- and then O'K remarkable and just acts, insofar as possible -- as if she can see. -- But the problem that it doesn't seem to stay static, but all worsens weekly for her rather inexorably..." In her December 1, 1972 letter, she notes: "I was glad to see O'K -- which I hadn't since early May -- as she seemed very much better in many ways than then. -- Generally in better health, better spirits (quite cheerful actually) -- and I did not have that terrible sense I had last spring of desperation and fatigue and tension which really worried me so much. -- She says her eyes are no better, though I feel from things she sees and says unconsciously that she is seeing more, and so does everyone around her. -- but she says it is that she has adapted to it. -- And yet I hope things will change for the better somehow. -- Her courage and attitude are remarkable -- and somehow I think she will find some way of painting again some time -- though she says not. -- but she does now begin to think of writing, using the little tape recorder -- so I hope something will come of this, and certainly encouraged it." Note: The Xeroxed proofs of O'Keeffe's text differ from the final version. The nine 8x10 inch proof photographs are loose in an envelope addressed to "Miss Georgia O'Keeffe c/o Bry". With two additional postcards from Bry to Jessner, a catalog illustrated with O'Keeffe's works (which Bry mentions in a letter to Jessner) in celebration of O'Keeffe being awarded the 1971 M. Carey Thomas Award by Bryn Mawr College, and a brochure for an O'Keeffe exhibition at The Downtown Gallery (1958). Some Memories of Drawings. New York: Atlantis Editions, 1974. Octavo, contents loose as issued in original publisher's presentation issue box (which is more substantial and handsome than the regular issue). One plate (#21) with light foxing on image; Blue Lines (#1) with a few very light spots of foxing on matting edge. Letters, proofs, additional material fine. A MAGNIFICENT COLLECTION.

THE TRUE GRIMOIRE Encyclopedia Goetia Volume I Deluxe ‘Goes’ edition quarter bound in vellum and marbled boards

UK: Scarlet Imprint, MMX [2010].. First Edition, First Printing, Deluxe Issue.. Deluxe Vellum and Marbled Paper Boards.. As New. First Edition. The special Deluxe "Goes" Edition limited to just 54 hand-numbered copies, this being copy number 27, inscribed by the author on the limitation page ?"To Edwin with warm regards, Jake.?" Octavo, original publisher's marbled paper boards with vellum spine titled in gilt, all edges gilt. 246 pp, Index at rear. A fine copy, as new, without dust jacket, in a sturdy cloth slipcase, as issued. ¶ An essential reconstruction of The Grimoirium Verum, with extensive, practical notes and material on the living traditions of Quimbanda etc. The true grimoire is a major contribution to the practice and study of magic. The much-maligned Grimorium Verum has been restored to its rightful place as a coherent system of goetic magic. Jake Stratton-Kent has reconstructed a working version from the corrupted Italian and French versions of this important grimoire. The True Grimoire springs from the source of goetic magic, enabling us to unlock the secrets of the other grimoires. We are given insights into the Dragon Rouge, Key of Solomon, Lemegeton, Abramelin, Honorius, and the Black Pullet. This is a treasure trove for the student of magic. The True Grimoire lets us experience a grimoire tradition with links back to the Graeco-Egyptian magical papyri and the necromancy of the original Goes. It also places Verum within a living tradtion, one which has taken root in the New World, finding expression in Quimbanda and the legion of Exus, the 'people of the cemetery' who have clear Verum equivalents. This is a constistently illuminating text. The copious notes of a working magician, combined with a scholarly attention to detail, enable us to use this text for its original purpose. The hierarchy of Verum and goetic spirits is restored, the nature of Astaroth is definitively set down. The planetary hours are explained, as are all the ritual requirements and preparations. Jake Stratton-Kent has been a goetic magician since 1972, making forty years of continuous goetic practice. His practical work integrates the magical papyri, Italo-French grimoires in particular the Grimorium Verum and African Traditional Religions with a focus on Quimbanda and magia negra. His interest in magic spans the ancient, medieval, renaissance, and modern as well as stretching from the West to the Middle East and crucially, the New World. His scholarly approach is backed with a personal relationship with the spirits, which is rare to find in the modern world.

Rome : IsMEO, 1972 - XVII, 416 S.; XV, 107 S. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The volume, published in memory of Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Persian Empire, is the second in a series of publications which the Italian Institute of the Middle and Far East (IsMEO) intends to issue on the restoration of some of the historical monuments in Iran carried out by Italian experts under the direction of IsMEO and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Art of Iran and the Iranian Archaeological Department. Like the first volume, Travaux de restauration de monuments historiques en Iran, which was edited by G. Zander and published in 1968, the present one is of a preliminary character, but unlike the former, which also included an account of the restoration of a group of Safavid monuments in Isphahan, this one deals only with the other group of monuments under restoration, namely the Achaemenian monuments in the Province of Fars. Whereas the first preliminary report gave a brief account of the work carried out at Persepolis and of the studies undertaken during the first two years, 1964-1966, the present volume deals with the work and studies undertaken during the following six vears, 1966-1972.         THE VERY PRECIOUS GIFT OF GOD [Interior Title] [Illuminated Manuscript Portfolio]

[1972]. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Folio. Beige cloth portfolio. Holding 21 leaves of holograph text accompanied by 12 illumi- nated plates. Contents loose, as issued. Mild handling wear. Near fine. Hirschman?'s own English trans- lation, transcription and re-il- lumination of the famous 15th Century alchemical treatise, ?"Pretiosissimum Donum Dei.?" Though of cloudy origin (doz- ens of manuscripts on alche- my bearing similar names are known to exist), the original work is generally attributed to Georges Aurach and is thought to have been published around 1475. Hirschman?'s source text here is a 1957 French translation from the original Latin by Eugene Canseliet, thought by many to be the true identity of Fulcanelli, a mysterious and well-known 20th centu- ry French alchemist. Hirschman illuminates his holograph with a series of 12 paintings, after or apparently inspired by the illustrations found in ?"Aureum Vellus Oder Guldin Schatz...?" (1708), and Joannes Daniel Myli- us?' 1628 work, ?"Anatomia Auri.?" Nevertheless, they are unmis- takably in Hirschman?'s distinc- tive style, in acrylic and poster paint on paper. Hirschman also translated the work of Abra- ham Abulafia into English, and along with Jerome Rothenberg and David Meltzer (both of whom he worked with closely) helped popularize Jewish mysticism in the 1970s via several important books and anthologies on Jewish poetic traditions. A unique art- ist?'s book and a compelling con- tribution to modern mysticism.
