Handwritten postscript signed "Isaac" on someone else's letter

Middlebury College, Vermont 1972 - Iconic American author and biochemist best known for his works of Science Fiction and Popular Science. 2 pages, 11 x 8.5 inches, Middlebury College, Vermont, August 2, 1972. Written on a letter sent by his friend John Ciardi (1916 - 1986), acclaimed poet and etymologist, to his wife Janet Jeppson Asimov, whereby the poet jokingly compares Isaac's behavior at a Bird Watchers Conference to that of new species of a promiscuous bird, in part: ".It seems only fair to tell you that the Conference Bird Watchers Club has compiled a series of exhausted reports on the "Isaacanary" and concluded that you are an endangered species. The "Isaacanary" has taken (like the Cow Bird) to laying her eggs in the nests of other birds. I will not enclose the 42 petitions we have received from the ladies of the Conference. They are for the archives. I will satisfy myself here by pointing out that all of them begin with 'Help!' 'Mayday' or 'S.O.S.' I speak only out of disinterested concern for the good of the conference when I say you must never let this bird come to any Conference unattended. When you fly supervisory.he comes recommended and atoned for. When he is alone, every one spends all day picking egg yolk off the scalp. He has even flirted with me - mostly by way of practice, to be sure - and who can tolerate that when he could be flirting with you, and not for any damn practice? This here "Isaacanary," I assure you, is no substitute for the Love Bird." At some point John Ciardi requested that Isaac Asimov mail this letter to his wife Janet, of which he complied, but not before adding: "Dear Janet: Big John insists I mail this illiterate effusion. Please understand that when he says I 'lay eggs' he means I flirt and get nowhere. I am the laughing stock of the Conference." Horizontal folds; fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

This beautifully produced first edition includes a number of images from Frank’s best-known work, Les Americains, a collection of documentary photographs of American life in the 1950s, particularly among the Beats, along with photographs of Frank’s family and images made during his travels in Peru, Spain, England, France. Published in Japan prior to the Lustrum publication of the same title, “Frank’s great confessional both sums up and marks the end not only of a photographic era, but a final coming to terms with the effects of WWII and the Bomb” (Parr & Badger I:238). With 30-page caption booklet in Japanese, often missing, laid in. From a limited edition of 1000 unnumbered copies, this is one of 500 copies with the slipcase photograph of “Platte River, Tennessee” (remaining copies with slipcase photograph “New York City, 1948”). Leiris.Miro’s art is based on the purity of poetic emotion and spontaneity of execution. The artist also found his favorite medium in lithography. The importance of his graphic work, continuous renewal and enrichment of his style show the high value which the artist attached to this medium of expression. Miro uses black ink with a range of values and refined tones, reaching wild and playful effects. With elements derived from Catalan traditional art and a spatiality, Miro gave his objects and symbols a proper life as subjects of stories from other worldly microcosms - the ideal reflection of a world longed for by the artist.         Victorian Nightmares; The Man-Wolf and Other Horrors; A Tide of Terror; Return From The Grave; Terror by Gaslight; The Thrill of Horror; Cold Fear; The Taste of Fear.

Eight volumes. 8vo. All very good or better in publisher's coloured cloth and dustwrappers. Minor edgewear, no priceclipping or significant wear or defect, a clean, tight uniform set. All signed by Hugh Lamb to title pages. Internally clean. A very pretty signed collection of one of the most comprehensive and carefully selected collections of weird and supernatural tales available. Collecting together a numberof stories and authors that at the time had been almost completely forgotten, Mr. Lamb performed a service to those who enjoy and collect such tales by reminding us of such gems as Erckmann-Chatrian's "The Man Wolf." and H.R. Wakefield's "The Red Lodge." without forcing us to track them down in their original form at great expense and frustration. The fact that now, having read them, we can go track them down is due entirely to mr. lamb's refusal to allow them to be forgotten. An attractive and increasingly rare collection.

Ten German Mini-Posters for Films Presented by Andy Warhol (Original Posters)

Frankfurt, Germany: Constantin-Film, 1972. Archive of ten German mini-posters from five movies produced by Andy Warhol between 1968 and 1972, including two films he directed: "Lonesome Cowboys" (1968) and "Blue Movie" (1969) and Paul Morrissey's "Flesh" (1968), "Trash" (1970), and "Heat" (1972). The posters feature iconic images of Warhol superstars Joe Dallesandro, Candy Darling, and Viva, as well as Sylvia Miles and Warhol himself. An interesting representation of Warhol's transition from a period of prolific underground film production to his near-retirement from directing, part of a broader shift from artist to brand. During this transition, Morrissey, acting as his manager, conceived of the idea to make more conventional narrative features "presented by" Warhol to keep Warhol's name in the press. The strategy was successful, much to Morrissey's later regret, at not only maintaining Warhol's fame, but financially as well. This financial success was in no small part due to their reception by German markets, where they were distributed by Constantin-Film. All mini-posters 9.5 x 11.5 inches. Near Fine or better. Murphy, pp. 214-27, 231-242, 242-245. Koch, pp. 104-13, 126, Watson, pp. 368-371, 387-90, 392-94. Vogel, pp. 217, 245-46, 255-7.

The Exorcist (Original screenplay, west coast)

Burbank: Warner Brothers, 1972. Early version of the final script for the 1973 film, directed by William Friedkin, based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, written for the screen by Blatty, and starring Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, and Linda Blair. One of the great genre films of the 1970s that accomplished the uncommon feat of being an over-the-top sensation upon its release and gaining subsequent status as a classic, with a strangeness and depth supplied by Burstyn and Sydow that only increases with repeated viewings. Another distinction of "The Exorcist" was that it walked away with 2 Oscars (including Best Screenplay for Blatty), along with 8 nominations (including Best Picture), a feat nearly unheard for a horror film. Yellow studio wrappers with titles in black, stated FINAL, dated April 24, 1972, rubber-stamped copy No. 13, and holograph ink notation reading: "WEST COAST VERSION / SAME AS NEW YORK RE-TYPED VERSION." Distribution page present. Title page present, with a credit for novelist-screenwriter Blatty. 137 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with blue revision pages throughout dated between 6/22/72 and 12/1/72, and some undated with "File Copy Change" noted at the top center. The revisions include a character name memo bound in just after the title page ("Cardinal" to "Bishop"), and a single-leaf Appendix with Merrin's speech to Satan. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus with some small closed tears and yapping at the wrapper edges, internally bound with two gold screw brads.

UK quad size. Approx. poster size 104 x 69 cm (41 x 27 inches). Excellent condition. Presented in a dark brown wooden frame. The film was the box office leader for 1972 and was, for a time, the highest-grossing picture ever made. It won three Academy Awards for that year: Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando) and in the category Best Adapted Screenplay for Puzo and Coppola.         The Great Gatsby (Original screenplay for an unproduced film, Mary Miles Minter's signed copy)

Sherman Oaks, CA: Self published, 1972. Draft script for an unproduced adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, "The Great Gatsby." Copy belonging to actress Mary Miles Minter, SIGNED by the screenwriter John Baron on the title page. Minter was a stunning actress during the early twentieth century, starred in over fifty silent films, and was at the center of a murder scandal in 1922 involving the death of director William Desmond Taylor ("Huck and Tom," "Johanna Enlists"). Minter's career was forever tarnished after the scandal, and she died in 1984. Fitzgerald's novel has been adapted several times, notably in 1926, 1949, 1974, and most recently in 2013. This script bears striking resemblance to that penned by Francis Ford Coppola for the 1974 Jack Clayton film. Blue studio wrappers, with a credit for screenwriter Baron on the front wrapper. Title page present, rubber-stamped as a registered copy of the Writers Guild of America, West, dated 1972, with credits for novelist Fitzgerald and screenwriter Baron. 159 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 158. Mechanically reproduced. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with a silver prong brad.

Rolling Stones American Tour 1972 (Original poster)

London: Rolling Stones Productions, 1972. One sheet poster advertising The Rolling Stones American tour following the release of "Exile on Main Street." Not only the peak of the band's greatness, but a tour that would generate much internal and external controversy. Robert Frank turned in a brilliant cover design for "Exile," and was invited to film the band in cinema verité fashion while on this tour. The film he submitted, showing heroin use, groupie sex with the band, and just about everything else except onstage performance, met with the disapproval of the Lads, and after haggling in court an injunction was put in not allowing it to be screened in public. A concert film, "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones," was shot during several performances in Texas, but was little seen until a recent DVD release that revealed it to be easily the finest filmed performance of the band ever made. 27 x 41 inches (105 x 89 cm). Folded, Near Fine.
