        FUNNY LITTLE WOMAN

      - (LENT,BLAIR)illus. THE FUNNY LITTLE WOMAN retold by Arlene Mosel. NY: Dutton (1972). Oblong 10 x 9 1/4", cloth, Fine in dust wrapper with seal and some soil. Stated 1st edition. The story is an old Japanese tale and features great color illustrations by Lent. LAID IN ARE 2 LETTERS FROM LENT. The first is dated 1966 and sends best wishes to the recipient from Ernest Small and Blair Lent of Boston, adding "Here is one of Baba Yaga's black sunflowers for luck" (referring to their book Bab Yaga that was published in 1966). There is also a drawing of a strange tree house with Baba Yaga the Witch standing at the entry. The other letter is typed, written to a collector who requested to have the Caldecott Award program signed. It is a rather long apology for a delay and definitely shows the kind of person Lent is. Illustrated with scores, diagrams, manuscripts and photographs. The first eight issues of this important publication (two of them double), founded by composer Peter Garland after attending a publishing workshop with Dick Higgins at CalArts in November 1970: "Soundings arose from a feeling that the work of musicians needed a much wider circulation than that afforded by current publications part of the current lure of the music of other cultures lies in the static nature of the art; the example of a sarangi or rebab player who has devoted a lifetime to the interpretation of a very old music can be just as inspiring as the traditional image of the Western composer, forever pushing forward into unexplored territory. Both deserve equal attention in a magazine such as this" (editorial, first issue). #1 (January 1972). Front cover by David Salle.         Solaris (Original Russian poster for the 1972 film)

Moscow: Creative Unit of Writers, 1972. Original Russian poster for the seminal 1972 science fiction film. This is the export variant, with text in English. Often cited as one of the most important films in the history of cinematography, "Solaris" is a meditative psychological drama occurring mostly aboard a space station orbiting the fictional planet Solaris. The scientific mission has stalled out because the meager skeleton crew of three scientists have fallen into separate emotional crises, and the gaseous planet below them is beginning to look like the main suspect. An open ended and conceptually faithful adaptation of Lem's novel, concerning itself with the inability of the human species to communicate with other intelligent life forms, based simply on the fact that a more advanced life form would exist outside the sphere of human experience and understanding. 44.5 x 36 inches (113 x 91.5 cm). Rolled, on archival linen. Discreet restoration, else about Fine. Criterion Collection 164.

GUY DE COINTET: A CAPTAIN FROM PORTUGAL. NP (Los Angeles). ND (1972).: Self-Published, First Edition 1/700. 12mo. Illustrated Wrappers. Artist's Book. Near Fine. np (48pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "A Captain From Portugal" is the first artist's book published by the late Parisian-born, Los Angeles-based conceptual and performance artist Guy de Cointet. It is comprised of primarily rune-like letterforms of a self-devised language with an example of music, and what appears to be a line of hieroglyphics thrown in. While it bears no publication details - nor in fact any English - it is noted as having been self-published by the artist in 1972 in an edition of seven hundred copies in Frederic Paul's authoritative 2014 Flammarion monograph "Guy de Cointet". A most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon item - only four copies are currently cited in OCLC WorldCat - showing a bit of age-toning and soiling to its white wrappers. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. oclc Inventory Number: 024996

Also with a dozen pages of photocopies from a section on elephants laid in (taken from the paperback edition) with an exchange between Matthiessen and his editor on it, and a retained copy of a two-page 1977 letter from Matthiessen to his editor (Iain) transmitting the copy "of the infamous elephant pages," apologizing for a prior argument: "...how obtuse of me not to realize...that there might be certain prudish readers who would see what you rightly called love of life not as generous and spirited, as I intended, but as mere recklessness and folly...." He continues with more specifics about both the writing and the friendship. Two retained copies of lists of additional corrections are laid in, one addressed to "Jack" and "based on Elisofon's review in Natural History Mag." There is also a 1978 letter laid in to Matthiessen from a filmmaker hoping to make a documentary about the Dorobo of Kenya and Tanzania. The book itself is the correct first edition, in brown cloth, in the first issue dust jacket with both the $17.50 price and the introductory $14.95 price, good until October 25, 1972. As Andrew Roth put it, "I have conducted an interview with the book merchant Harvey Zucker, who, single-handedly and despite himself, established the out-of-print, rare photography book market at his legendary SoHo store, A Photographer’s Place. It was the first of its kind; nothing has replaced it since it closed in 2001." Zucker, who died in 2015, was himself a photographer, and his daguerrotypes are in the collections of the George Eastman House and the Smithsonian. Parr & Badger, The Photo Book I.261.
