The Tree Where Man Was Born

NY: Dutton. 1972. Peter Matthiessen's own working copy of this nonfiction book about Africa, which was a finalist for the National Book Award, with text by Matthiessen and photographs by Eliot Porter. "PM: Corrected Copy" written in Matthiessen's hand on the flyleaf, and with dozens of changes both by him and apparently by a copyeditor. In addition, marked by Matthiessen on a half dozen pages, as though for a reading, with a piece of scrap paper laid in noting those pages numbers. Also with a dozen pages of photocopies from a section on elephants laid in (taken from the paperback edition) with an exchange between Matthiessen and his editor on it, and a retained copy of a two-page 1977 letter from Matthiessen to his editor (Iain) transmitting the copy "of the infamous elephant pages," apologizing for a prior argument: " obtuse of me not to realize...that there might be certain prudish readers who would see what you rightly called love of life not as generous and spirited, as I intended, but as mere recklessness and folly...." He continues with more specifics about both the writing and the friendship. Two retained copies of lists of additional corrections are laid in, one addressed to "Jack" and "based on Elisofon's review in Natural History Mag." There is also a 1978 letter laid in to Matthiessen from a filmmaker hoping to make a documentary about the Dorobo of Kenya and Tanzania. The book itself is the correct first edition, in brown cloth, in the first issue dust jacket with both the $17.50 price and the introductory $14.95 price, good until October 25, 1972. After the date mentioned, the first issue jackets were clipped so that only the higher price showed; later issue jackets were unclipped and only had the higher price. Approximately 10 pages paperclipped at the top edges; the endpages are foxed; a very good, working copy, in a very good dust jacket. An historic collaboration between the preeminent writer on and the leading photographer of the natural world, this being a unique copy. First Edition. Hardcover.

1972Litografia originale impressa in seppia su carta Arches, siglata E.A. (épreuve d'Artist) all'angolo inferiore sinistro e firmata a matita dall'artista in basso a destra.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Seminal Archive of Research and Treatment Materials

[Various places]. [ca. 1972-1985]. An archive of materials showing the development of the understanding and treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the first decade after the end of the Vietnam war: when the symptoms of the syndrome were first becoming evident, often with a considerable delay between the end of the veteran's service in Vietnam and the appearance of such symptoms, Compiled by John Russell Smith, a Marine Vietnam veteran who was one of the early researchers into PTSD and later earned a Masters degree in clinical psychology from Duke University, the archive consists of Smith's research materials; diagnostic and clinical tools developed for identifying PTSD; original papers by Smith and others on issues involved with Vietnam service and PTSD, including Smith's testimony before Congress on the subject; and treatment notes, including group therapy ("rap group") accounts and other clinical papers. Smith served as a consultant to the US Army's drug education program in the US, Southeast Asia and Europe, and was a delegate of the Catholic Commission of Inquiry. He organized a construction company to train veterans with bad discharges in construction skills and ran a prison program for Vietnam veterans leaving the New York state prison system. In 1974 he was elected Director of the Vietnam Era Veteran National Resource Project charged with coordinating, funding and promoting 400 local veteran self-help projects. From 1975 to 1980 he served as consultant to the American Psychiatric Association in drafting the category on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in its new Diagnostic Manual. By 1981, when he testified before Congress, Smith had been working on these issues for a dozen years. He became the first Director of the National Veterans Administration Stress Center in Cleveland and later expanded his work to include treating first responders, including the families of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. The archive is a revealing look at the development of a methodology for addressing a catastrophic psychological syndrome that appeared in the aftermath of what was, up to that point, the longest war in American history, the first war that America "lost," and a war that polarized the nation for a generation or more, taking a particularly great toll on those who served in it. Of particular interest in the archive are a carbon transcript of a discussion between several researchers, including Smith, on the establishment of a task force for defining catastrophic stress reactions, and a heavily edited draft of a paper by two of them -- Smith and Chaim Shatan, an MD who specialized in Vietnam veterans' postwar psychological problems -- that emerged from their study. Also included: a four-volume training manual for Operation Outreach, a Veterans Administration program for treating PTSD in Vietnam vets; research materials Smith found relating PTSD to earlier wars' problems of "shell shock" and "combat fatigue" and the military's treatment strategies for them over the previous 50 years; the author's military records, as well as a number of plaques he earned for his work; and the books he collected or were given to him. An inventory is available. A seminal archive by one of the early and important researchers in the field, and one of the only ones who served in Vietnam. No Binding.

        Max Ernst.

Max Ernst (* 2. April 1891 in Brühl - + 1. Versand D: 5,00 EUR

Keene, California, July 27, 1972.. 1972.. Fine. - Over 140 words typed on 8-1/2 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide "United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO" stationery with the "Union Label" logo at the top and an illustration of marchers along the bottom of the sheet. In his letter addressed "Dear Seymour" Cesar Chavez thanks the U.S. Congressman from New York Seymour Halpern for his support of the cause: "As I return to Arizona to work on our campaign to recall Gov. Jack Williams and our registration drive, the memories of your letter, your prayers and sacrifices during my fast give me strength and courage.... We have planted seeds of love, of justice and of non-violence in the fields of the farmworkers. We must prevent these seeds from being destroyed by the strong political tools that continually persecute us...." Chavez closes with his famous slogan "Si Se Puede!" and simply signs himself "Cesar". The letter is folded for mailing with only minor creasing along the top and left corner. Near fine.
The American labor leader and Civil Rights activist Cesar Chavez (1927- 1993) co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with Dolores Huerta in 1962. The Association later became known as the United Farm Workers Union, UFW. A Mexican-American farm worker, Chavez was to become the best known Latino American civil rights activist for his struggle in support of the rights of farm workers, swelling the ranks of the American labor movement and for his aggressive non-violent tactics which elevated the workers' struggle into a moral cause. His slogan "Si, se Puede" (Spanish for "Yes, one can") was later paraphrased and adopted by President Barrack Obama.
The Queens New York Republican Congressman to whom this letter is addressed, Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co- sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.

M. Barrie's Quality Street). Amongst the many luminaries who have signed are Josephine Tewson and June Whitfield, both of whom performed many times with Barker, Richard Briers, Michael Bates, Michael Hordern, Frank Windsor, Barker's agent Peter Eade, Joan Sims, and Barker's long-time partner and co-star of The Two Ronnies, Ronnie Corbett.

[Original Pen and Ink Panel for:] THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA [caption title]

[New York?: The Artist, 1972. Original pen and ink cartoon panel on artist's tracing paper (298 x 168 mm, plus ample margins). A few marginal finger smudges, but about fine. Double-matted. The original artwork for this collaborative five-panel (plus title) comic strip by Ashbery and Brainard, prepared for publication in the 1 November 1972 issue of CHICAGO (Kermani C204). With Ashbery's name incorporated in the title panel at top, and captioned at the bottom, "Drawn by Brainard." A fine example of the significant body of collaborative work by two friends, which manifested itself early on in the era of 'C' COMICS and the ferment of the 1960s New York literary and artistic community.
