'Watership Down' Proof Copy 1st UK Edition 1972

We are delghted to present for sale one of the few proof copies ever produced of 'Watership Down'. Rex Collings, the publishers initially sent around ten copies to London reviewers in 1972. The tiny publishers who, legend has it, could not afford to even pay Adams' advance, produced the proof in a hurry. This is evident given the fact that the title of the book is handwritten on to the spine of the blue proof cover. There is no record of another proof selling within the last ten years and no other copy is presently available for sale at the time of writing. Given the fact that the book has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, this copy is perhaps the first time this story appeared in print. The book itself is bound into pale blue plain paper covers, onto which has been handwritten the title, presumably by the publisher or the recipient. It is in very good sound condition, has clearly been read more than once, the page edges are a bit grubby and the page corners are no longer sharp. This is in effect the text block of the true UK first edition. There is no fold-out map at the rear as there is in the proper trade edition, nor it appears has there ever been one. The dust jacket has clearly been with the book since new, it is the true first edition trade dust jacket (although the jacket is slightly longer than the book), in very good+ condition, with some wear to the folds and a couple of closed tears to the top of the spine where it has been handled carelessly, probably when removing it from a bookshelf. There is also a tiny piece missing to the right of the publisher's name, and the spine has faded a little also.A very scarce item and a must for any true Adams/Watership Down collector

        Watership Down

Published by Rex Collings, London; 1972. 8vo. This excellent copy of the classic children's tale by Richard Adams is in Fine condition. It is tightly bound in its original brown cloth with gold gilt lettering and a gilt rabbit to the front board. Inside the pages are beautifully bright and clean, which is quite rare with children's books, and it is very well looked after and appears barely read. It comes complete with unfolding map to the back of the book. There is a neat ownership inscription to the front free endpaper and some very slight toning to the front free endpaper and title pages around where a newspaper clipping has been inserted. The clipping is of an article announcing Watership Down as the winner of the seventh Guardian award for children's fiction. There is also some very slight bumping to the top of the spine and a very slight shelf lean to the book from where it has been kept on a bookshelf. These are the only minor flaws to a book which is otherwise in excellent condition. The book is housed in a Fine dustjacket. There is no marking or or damage to the jacket, and only the smallest amount of bumping to the top of the spine, but this is so slight it is barely noticeable. The jacket has been encased at some point in laminate in order to preserve it, which although perhaps not the deal choice of protection, has certainly done it's job and the dustjacket is in exceptional condition. In all this is a lovely copy and would be the perfect addition to any collection of modern first editions.

The General of the Dead Army.

New York: Grossman, 1972. First American edition of the author's first book to be translated into English. Octavo, original cloth. Warmly inscribed by Kadare on the half-title page. Fine in a very good dust jacket with light rubbing. Ismail Kadare was the first recipient of the Man Booker International Award; beating out several Nobel Laureates. The General of the Dead Army ponders the futility of war as it follows an Italian general and a priest who seek the remains of a fallen comrade. It received many positive reviews: "Mr. Kadare advances wryly and dryly into the darkness[he] doesn't do messages; he brings them to lethal life" (New York Times). And the Boston Globe called it "a powerful and poignant Albanian novel." The novel has also been entered into the Parisian magazine Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century, and twenty years after its publication by Sh.B. Naim Frashëri in 1963 it was adapted into an Italian drama film directed by Luciano Tovoli.

Erections, Ejaculations, Exhibitions and General Tales of Ordinary Madness [The Dedication Copy]

(San Francisco): City Lights. (1972). Apparently the dedication copy of this collection of Bukowski's stories published mainly in underground papers such as Open City and Nola Express. Inscribed by Bukowski: "Dedicated to Dix/ C.B.," but Bukowski has crossed out "Dix" and on the dedication page he's placed an asterisk after the printed dedication, "To Linda King," and added the footnote "*Dix's guardian angel." King and Bukowski had a turbulent five-year relationship in the early 1970s. The full, printed dedication here reads: "To Linda King/ who brought it to me and who will take it away." Given that Bukowski has first dedicated this copy to "Dix," and then crossed that out to asterisk King, "Dix's guardian angel," instead, this could easily be construed to be the dedication copy. Pursuing this line of thought, "Dix" (Dixon Steele) was the name of the lead character in the Humphrey Bogart film In a Lonely Place, in which an alcoholic screenwriter suspected of murder falls in love with a woman who saves him from the law and who has the potential to save him from his inner demons, if only he could stop feeding into her doubts about him. "Dix," as played by Bogart, would thus be an alter ego of Bukowski, and King the alter ego of "Laurel Gray," the character who gives Bogart the alibi that protects him. Mild sunning and a few small creases; near fine in wrappers. One of the more unusual and allusive Bukowski inscriptions we have seen. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine.

Walt Dizney's Songs and Stories of Uncle Remus featuring Brer Rabbit

Chicago: Institute of Positive Education 1972 - Broadside. 33 x 24.5 inches. Marginal creases.Art was his passion. Education was his vocation. Dr. Murry DePillars devoted his entire life to combining the two to promote enlightenment, to encourage understanding and to engender pride in the African-American experience. Born in Chicago, DePillars grew up in a family that recognized and encouraged his interest in visual art, as well as in the performing arts. The neighborhoods in which he lived were teeming with jazz and blues clubs, as well as with gospel and ethnic music which strongly affected him. This early childhood development provided the foundation for the man, whose commitment to art and to education changed the lives of those who were privileged to know him. Murry DePillars was educated in the public schools of Chicago. He earned an A.A. in Fine Arts from Kennedy-King Community College, a B.A. in Art Education and an M.A. in Urban Studies from Roosevelt University, also in Chicago. He received his Ph.D. in Art Education from The Pennsylvania State University. Both his master's thesis, "Housing, Environment and Children's Art" and his doctoral dissertation, "African-American Artists and Students: A Morphological Study in the Urban Black Aesthetic" addressed societal issues.

Ten German Mini-Posters for Films Presented by Andy Warhol (Original Posters)

Constantin-Film, Frankfurt, Germany 1972 - Archive of ten German mini-posters from five movies produced by Andy Warhol between 1968 and 1972, including two films he directed: "Lonesome Cowboys" (1968) and "Blue Movie" (1969) and Paul Morrissey's "Flesh" (1968), "Trash" (1970), and "Heat" (1972). The posters feature iconic images of Warhol superstars Joe Dallesandro, Candy Darling, and Viva, as well as Sylvia Miles and Warhol himself. An interesting representation of Warhol's transition from a period of prolific underground film production to his near-retirement from directing, part of a broader shift from artist to brand. During this transition, Morrissey, acting as his manager, conceived of the idea to make more conventional narrative features "presented by" Warhol to keep Warhol's name in the press. The strategy was successful, much to Morrissey's later regret, at not only maintaining Warhol's fame, but financially as well. This financial success was in no small part due to their reception by German markets, where they were distributed by Constantin-Film.All mini-posters 9.5 x 11.5 inches. Near Fine or better.Murphy, pp. 214-27, 231-242, 242-245. Koch, pp. 104-13, 126, Watson, pp. 368-371, 387-90, 392-94. Vogel, pp. 217, 245-46, 255-7.

Encuentros, Rencontres, Meetings, Treffen, Incontri Pamplona: 1972 26 VI 3 VII

1972. Massive unpaginated documentation of hundreds of artworks, by an international array of avant-garde artists, displayed in public locations throughout Pamplona in June and July of 1972, incl. texts and hundreds of plates (most folding, some with plastic overlays, some with inserts or other quirky supplements) describing and documenting the works. 4to. Original wrpps., some minor soiling or age-darkening. Pamplona (ALEA) 1972. A fascinating, offbeat, unconventional publication whose form takes on the appearance of an art object itself. The roster of artists includes many of the most important figures in the avant garde of the moment, including Acconci, Andre, Arakawa, Baldessari, Ben, Boltanski, Cage, Christo, De Maria, Dibbets, Long, Nauman, On Kawara, Ruscha, Vostell, and Weiner, among many others. This catalogue, with its folded pages, inserts, and other arrangements, as well as striking photographic portraits of the artists, mirrors the free-wheeling spirit of the time. The exhibition was a major event on the international circuit and was instrumental in exposing the world of the international avant-garde to a Spanish audience until then sheltered from developments by the Franco regime.

Handwritten postscript signed "Isaac" on Ciardi's letter

Middlebury College, Vermont, 1972. unbound. 2 pages, 11 x 8.5 inches, Middlebury College, Vermont, August 27, 1972. Written on a letter sent by his friend John Ciardi (1916 - 1986), acclaimed poet and etymologist, to his wife Janet Jeppson Asimov, whereby the poet jokingly compares Isaac's behavior at a Bird Watchers Conference to that of new species of a promiscuous bird, in part: "...It seems only fair to tell you that the Conference Bird Watchers Club has compiled a series of exhausted reports on the "Isaacanary" and concluded that you are an endangered species. The "Isaacanary" has taken (like the Cow Bird) to laying her eggs in the nests of other birds. I will not enclose the 42 petitions we have received from the ladies of the Conference. They are for the archives. I will satisfy myself here by pointing out that all of them begin with 'Help!' 'Mayday' or 'S.O.S.' I speak only out of disinterested concern for the good of the conference when I say you must never let this bird come to any Conference unattended. When you fly supervisory...he comes recommended and atoned for. When he is alone, every one spends all day picking egg yolk off the scalp. He has even flirted with me - mostly by way of practice, to be sure - and who can tolerate that when he could be flirting with you, and not for any damn practice? This here "Isaacanary," I assure you, is no substitute for the Love Bird..." At some point John Ciardi requested that Isaac Asimov mail this letter to his wife Janet, of which he complied, but not before adding: "Dear Janet: Big John insists I mail this illiterate effusion. Please understand that when he says I 'lay eggs' he means I flirt and get nowhere. I am the laughing stock of the Conference." Horizontal folds; fine condition. Iconic American author and biochemist best known for his works of Science Fiction and Popular Science.

        I travestiti

Dedica e firma autografe della Carmi a pennarello, datata Milano 24-6-1977 (Inscription signed by the Artist, dated Milan 24-6-1977). Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First Edition).

I travestiti. Con una nota di Elvio Fachinelli

Essedi Editrice - L'Erba Voglio, (1972). Testo in italiano e in inglese. Parr / Badger, The Photobook, I, p. 228. Italiano

Anne Tyler 17-Volume Collection of Signed First Editions, with Correspondence: The Clock Winder; Celestial Navigation; Searching for Caleb; Earthly Possessions; Morgan's Passing; Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant; The Accidental Tourist; Breathing Lessons; Saint Maybe; Your Place is Empty; Tumble Tower; Ladder of Years; A Patchwork Planet; Back When We Were Grownups; The Amateur Marriage; Timothy Tugbottom Says No!; Digging to America

Alfred A. Knopf / G.P. Putnam's Sons / William B. Ewert / Orchard Books, New York 1972 - First editions. Each (except Digging to America) signed without inscription by author on title page. The Clock Winder: board edges a bit faded, two tiny spots on top page ridge. Back When We Were Grownups includes publisher's newsletter (laid in). An impressive collection of novels by the Pulitzer Prize winning author, comprising all published works released from 1972 to 2006 (and thus missing her first three, and last four, works), as well as her two juvenile titles. Your Place is Empty is also of particular interest, being an imprint of the William B. Ewert fine press in Concord, New Hampshire. With the exception of Digging to America, they are all signed by Anne Tyler directly on the title pages - no small feat considering that, until recently, the author did not make public appearances or grant interviews. Even sending items to her for the purpose of obtaining signatures was a complicated process, as illustrated in the four postcards and three greeting cards included here, in which Tyler requests they be sent such that she can receive them without leaving her home. The original recipient of these also sent the author a number of gifts, for which she expresses thanks in her correspondence. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
