London, 1972. unbound. 2 pages, 11 x 8.5 inches, in English, Maresfield Gardens, London, February 13, 1972, to author Robert Sussman, complimenting him on a review and explaining the difficulties in writing a history of psychoanalysis, in part: "...It is not easy to write a history of psychoanalysis since there are so many conflicting trends now and they look different from whichever angle you look at them. I am very interested to know how far you are with your task. I wonder, for example, what your impressions were of the lowgross in Vienna. Was it any help? Or did it help only to illustrate the confusion?" Freud's use of the phrase "lowgross" is interchangeable with Viktor Frankl's term "logotherapy." Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope. Natural folds but still in fine condition. Austrian-British psychoanalyst considered to be the founder of psychoanalytic child psychology.

        Choosing: Green Beans

(Milan): (Edizioni Toselli), (1972) - 4to (296 × 207 mm), pp.[28]. 9 colour photographs. Introduction by Baldessari in Italian and English. Design by A. Sganzerla; minor handling crease to top edge of pages. Side-stapled. Printed card covers, white, text in black; lightly toned as often, minor handling crease to top edge, light impressed marks to fore-edge from historic stacking with another copy, minor rubbing to covers with scuffing to rear. A very good copy. First edition of this highlight among 1970s conceptual artists’ books, which has ‘plenty to say about the process of photography, especially as it relates to the loaded act of recording the world for the benefit of the archive and the social deployment of discreet knowledge’ (Badger). In the introduction, Baldessari explains that Choosing: Green Beans documents a game devised for two players: ‘This work is part of a series of works about choosing. In this version a group of green beans was available from which to choose. A participant was asked to choose any three beans from the group for whatever reasons he/she might have at the moment. The three chosen beans were then placed upon a surface to be photographed. I chose one of the three beans for whatever reasons I might have had at that moment. A photograph was taken of the selection process. The chosen bean was carried over; the two other beans not chosen were discarded; two new beans were added. The next chose was made, and so on. Each of the participants develops strategies unknown to the other player as the selection process continues until all the beans are used.’ Parr and Badger The Photobook: A History Vol.II pp.146-7 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        I travestiti

Prima edizione (First Edition).

        August 1914 [Signed] [August chetyrnadtsatogo]

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1972. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing (slight defect to the rear board's upper left corner), in a Near Fine dust jacket (some small lifts to the front panel's lamination, creasing to the rear flap -- otherwise Fine with modest soiling to the white rear panel and with considerably brighter coloring to the dust jacket than we typically see), SIGNED AND DATED BY ALEXANDR SOLZHENITSYN on the half-title page and there inscribed by him as follows: "for Don Pope / Alexander Solzhenitsyn / 1991" and being the first installment of Solzhenitsyn's "The Red Wheel" cycle of novels ("August 1914", "November 1916", "March 1917", and "April 1917") which retell the demise of Imperial Russia and the rise of the Soviet Union. "A grand meditation on history, a masterly re-creation of people and faces caught up in the sweep of time, symbolized by a rolling fiery red wheel. The work is breathtaking in scope." (Gary Kern, The New York Times). "August 1914" begins the cycle with Imperial Russia's disastrous opening of World War I with its defeat at the Battle of Tannenberg in East Prussia. Conceived in 1939 and finished in 1970, "August 1914" was rejected by the Soviet publishers and was published by the YMCA Press in Paris (1971) without Solzhenitsyn's permission, though he embraced it when he acquired knowledge of it. The first English translations (US and UK) were published in 1972, and a revised edition was published in 1984. Solzhenitsyn won the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature for "the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature". Signed copies of the first edition, first printing in any country are quite scarce. An altogether Near Fine copy, SIGNED BY ALEXANDR SOLZHENITSYN. SCARCE INDEED.

        Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1972. First edition. Quarto, original cloth. Signed by Nancy Ekholm Burkert on the half title page. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Kirkus Reviews called this collaboration between Randall and Nancy Eckholm Burkert "a sort of legend even before its time of publication." Jarrell also wrote The Bat-Poet and The Animal Family, a Newbery Honor Book. Jarrell retained the Grimm (and grim) ending to the tale, as the stepmother is forced to dance to her death. Burkert's illustrations are magical, light-filled creations that more than earn the book its Caldecott Honor Book status. This delightful book's extra-large format showcases the fabulously detailed illustrations, alternating two facing pages of art with two pages of straight text. This is an unforgettable interpretation of a well-loved story.

The Exorcist (Original oversize double weight still photograph from the 1972 film)

Warner Brothers, Burbank 1972 - Vintage oversize borderless double weight black and white photograph from the 1972 film. An amazing image, showing Max von Sydow looming above--and seemingly beyond--a very possessed young Linda Blair. One of the great genre films of the 1970s that accomplished the uncommon feat of being an over-the-top sensation upon its release and gaining subsequent status as a classic, with a strangeness and depth supplied by Burstyn and Sydow that only increases with repeated viewings. Another distinction of "The Exorcist" was that it walked away with 2 Oscars (including Best Screenplay for Blatty), along with 8 nominations (including Best Picture), a feat nearly unheard for a horror film. 11 x 14 inches. Near Fine.
