        Death in Venice

Aquarius Press, Baltimore, Maryland 1971 - First edition. Fine in box/case. Large Folio. Printed on Fabriano Classico. From a numbered edition of 122 with various plate sizes and sheet size measuring 22 1/4 by 14 7/8 inches. Each print is titled and editioned in pencil. A leading American printmaker and satirist, Warrington Colescott continues the tradition of Francisco Goya, William Hogarth, and Honoré Daumier. Residing in Wisconsin and long-affiliated with the Department of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he is widely known for his innovative use of intaglio techniques. In 1970, Aquarius Press (Baltimore, Maryland; New York) invited him to submit a list of texts he might wish to illustrate for a deluxe livre d’artiste—a tradition of matching author and artist that originated in Paris in the late nineteenth century. Colescott immediately named Death in Venice as his first choice, Thomas Mann’s celebrated novella of 1912 that had first captivated him in college. The following year he completed and saw published a portfolio of ten color etchings illustrating Mann’s text. 10 color etchings and aquatint with embossing, illustrating Thomas Mann's novel. On page 40 of "The Prints of Warrington Colescott" author Mary Weaver Chapin notes: '.Aquarius Press invited him to submit ideas for a livre d'artist.and by December 1970 they had a contract. Colescott then spent a week in Venice making sketches of the aging hotels along the Lido, the pigeons in the Piazza San Marco and the gondoliers. The synergy between Mann's text and Colescott's visual language and graphic expression is supberb. Colescott captures the genteel decline of the city's buildings and monuments, collaging many impressions recalled through layers of memory, and the particular quality of sunlight in watery Venice.Colescott subsumes his own quirky style to a certain extent to harmonize with the writer's style and produce a cohesive vision."         Collection of letters to Jagdish Mehra

1971-79. Salam, Abdus (1926-96). Collection of correspondence consisting of five typed / autograph letters signed to historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2002), plus three letters to foundations regarding grants for Mehra’s Historical Development of Quantum Theory; complete list available on request. 13 sheets total, plus covers for several of the letters. V.p., 1971-79. Very good. Salam, one of the leading figures in 20th century theoretical physics, made notable contributions to quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, receiving a share of the 1979 Nobel Prize in physics for his contribution to the electroweak unification theory (the unified description of the weak and electromagnetic interactions between two elementary particles). He was the first Pakistani and first Muslim to receive a Nobel Prize in science, and the second person from a Muslim country, after Anwar Sadat (Peace, 1977), to receive any type of Nobel award. The correspondence includes four typed letters signed from Salam to Mehra regarding Mehra’s contribution to Aspects of Quantum Theory (1972), a festschrift in honor of Paul Dirac’s seventieth birthday edited by Salam and E. P. Wigner. Salam praised Mehra’s paper (“’The golden age of theoretical physics’: P. A. M. Dirac’s scientific work from 1924 to 1933”) as “a wonderful article” and told Mehra that “Dirac saw and liked your paper.” Also present is an autograph letter signed from Salam to Mehra discussing an unidentified paper by Mehra: “Parts of it are splendid—make me blush . . . However, one part could be disastrous . . . I hope the friends [?] did not take it over as it is, because it could do damage . . .” The remaining three pieces are letters of recommendation from Salam to officials at various foundations to whom Mehra had applied for grants to complete his Historical Development of Quantum Theory (1982-2001).

The story of the famous Ferhad and Shirin. [with] Stories of the secret of Mahfiruz Sultan.Istanbul, the lithographic printing office [Henri Cayol?], 1271 A.H. [= 1854/55]. 4to. A wholly lithographed book from a calligraphic and pen-decorated manuscript written in Turkish in Arabic script, with 8 lithographed pen-drawn illustration plates, and elaborate pen-work decoration on the title-page, the opening of the text and the final page, and smaller decorations scattered through the text. Contemporary boards (spine reinforced with later brown cloth).

      - Seyfettin Özege, . Katalogu (1971-1982) (noting only 6 plates); Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft 53 (1899), 10913?; cf. WorldCat 41490099. An extremely rare, wholly lithographed book containing two folk tales, published in Istanbul and written in Turkish in the Arabic script. The main text, with 8 illustrations, tells the ancient story of Ferhad and Shirin. The second story is written in the outside margins of the pages, running parallel to the main story. It is based on more recent Ottoman history but probably does not stick closely to the historical facts. The main character is Mahfiruz Sultan, an Eastern Orthodox Christian slave, consort of the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I and mother of Osman II. She helped put her son on the throne when he was only 14 but he was assassinated four years later. With manuscript note on title-page. The paper is slightly browned but the book is otherwise in good condition. Some quires show damage and repairs to the gutter folds, and the sewing has come loose in one. The spine was apparently damaged and has been reinforced with brown cloth, and the boards show minor damage. An extremely rare early lithographic book from Istanbul, with two Turkish folk tales, the main one with 8 illustrations.

        Autograph Letter Signed

December 30, 1971. Single white leaf, hand written in black ink. Signed by Baldwin as "Jimmy". Near fine, creased at the folds, with some additional light creasing, else fine. Overall, a bright and fresh letter, with warm and affectionate greetings for the recipient and rich with references to Baldwin's books One Day, When I Was Lost and No Name in the Street. Baldwin letters are exceedingly scarce in the market. James Baldwin addressed this loving piece of emotional correspondence to the actor David Moses. Baldwin befriended Moses in 1962 at a party hosted by Virginia Capers and the two remained close and in constant correspondence until Baldwin's death in 1987. More than just close friends, Moses remembers in a 2003 interview with Michael Kearns, "He fell in love with me and I loved him ? Jimmy was more concerned with the friendship than the sexuality. He said, 'Don't worry about this. You're an actor and I'm a writer - we'll make love onstage." They did just that in 1973, when Baldwin produced a tribute to Ray Charles as part of the Newport Jazz Festival in New York City and Moses performed "Sonny's Blues," from Baldwin's Going To Meet The Man (1965). Both victims of the double prejudice of being homosexual and African-American, Baldwin and Moses shared a connection that was more than romantic. Indeed, it was Moses who first told Baldwin of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, and to Moses that Baldwin complained about his struggle producing his film about the life of Malcolm X. Notably, Moses directed Calvin Levels' one-man play that commemorated Baldwin's life, James Baldwin: Down from the Mountaintop in 2002-2003. In this letter, Baldwin primarily focuses on his adaptation of Alex Haley's 1953 non-fiction text The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Baldwin wrote a script for a film adaptation of Malcom X's biography with the help of his editor Arnold Perl, but conflicts with producers, the volatile time period in American history, plus Baldwin's personal struggles prevented the project from coming to fruition. After a notable standoff with Columbia Pictures over how to portray the activist's life, Baldwin was determined to complete and publish his script according to his own vision regardless of the consequences of the book's ultimate success. Perl's death in 1971, before the book's completion, created further challenges for Baldwin, but his determination only increased. As he explains in this letter, "I have completed, delivered, and intend to produce, at last, my Malcolm X story, '- one day, when I was lost' - This involves a battle which I may not win, but which I have no remote intention of losing. No doubt, the newspapers will keep you posted as to that. Cross your fingers." One Day, When I Was Lost: A Scenario Based on Alex Haley's The Autobiography of Malcolm X was published in 1972 and, while it was not seriously adapted immediately following publication, Spike Lee used the text as the basis for his 1992 film Malcolm X, which starred Denzel Washington in the title role. Also in this letter, Baldwin discusses his survey of the tragedies and triumphs of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, No Name in the Street. In this text, Baldwin examines the lives and deaths of leaders Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., and explores how their different approaches towards equality have worked to both strengthen and divide the movement. Specifically, Baldwin treaded in between King's philosophy of peaceful resistance and Malcolm X's militant resistance and represented an important middle voice in the national debate surrounding race. In his 1972 New York Times review of No Name in the Street, Mel Watkins agrees that, "Baldwin's passion, honesty and persuasiveness did much to free the impasse in racial discourse and helped create what now seems the fleeting illusion that nonblack Americans could actually empathize with blacks and seriously confront the racial problem. Along with Martin Luther King Jr. he helped shape the idealism up. Unbound. Near Fine.
