        [Manuscript]: Hart Cooper

[1971]. Manuscript. Loose quarto sheets printed with black and blue mimeograph ink. 513pp, and 172pp., plus a two-page list of characters and two copies of an excised chapter. A bit of wear to the corner of the first dozen sheets, near fine. Hart Cooper is the unpublished "spiritual autobiography" written by Thackara, a Los Angeles-based author, in 1971, more than a decade before the publication of his first book in 1984, America's Children. According to the author, Hart Cooper was particularly important in "creating the trans-national mythology" later incorporated into his controversial 1999 novel, The Book of Kings, which is considered, depending on the reviewer, a masterpiece of Western literature or else one of the worst novels ever published. This copy of the manuscript comes from the library of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, Peter Taylor, whom Thackara met while attending Harvard. Taylor became a mentor to Thackara and the two remained friends until Taylor's death in 1994. An influential unpublished first novel from this highly controversial writer. .

        Monty Python's Big Red Book

London: Methuen and Co Ltd,, 1971. Quarto. Original blue (not red) pictorial laminated boards. With a red label to the front cover printed "Very Urgent" in white. Illustrated in colour in the text throughout, with a number of extra features, such as: a leaf with a keyhole cut through it (the recto for voyeurs, the verso for exhibitionists); a leaf perforated to allow readers to "rip off the naughty parts" of an image; an "Australian Page" printed upside down; and a four page pamphlet sewn in at the centre electioneering for the Silly Party, with descriptions of "Some of Your Silly Candidates" and printed with slogans such as "You've Never Had It So Silly". The book design is a very early example of the work of the latterly famous graphic designer Derek Birdsall [a.k.a. Omnific] who became an honorary Python in the making of this book. Spine a touch faded, corners rubbed with the front joint just starting at the tail of the spine. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, claiming (somewhat dubiously) to be number 1 of a "special limited edition of 29,999". Presentation copy humorously inscribed by five members of Monty Python, making use of the printed ownership box by adding their names, the result reading: "This Big Red Book Belongs to: Andrew & James, And not to: John Cleese: And incidentally it cost me £ Eric Idle (Eric Idle) (3p), It is a present from: Graham Chapman". Beneath this is inscribed, "PROOF RAED BY: Michael Palin" and also, next to a printed stamp reading "Special Offer, Free Gas Cooker Given Away With Every Other Copy of This Book* ... *see other copy", the inscription, "PLUS!! 1 (ONE) Terry Jones". Andrew & James, the presentees, are the two children of Richard Baker, a BBC news reader who made cameo appearances in episodes of Monty Python, and whose letter of complaint to the Pythons for asking Reginald Bosanquet "whoever he is" to write the Foreword, and not somebody from the BBC, is reproduced in this book.

" MAN WITH GOLD MASK" [Original Lithograph]

[San Francisco: Collector's Press, 1971].. Large folio (22.5 x 29.5 inches). Original color lithograph, highlighted with embossing and collage. Framed under glass. Fine. Impression #87 of one hundred copies, signed and numbered by Cuevos in the lower edge of the image. A compelling image in blue, green and black, of the upper torso of a human figure with the face concealed by a hinged gold foil mask that opens to reveal a face underneath. Published as an element in the portfolio, CUEVAS' COMEDIES, a collection of fourteen lithographs and screenprints produced under the supervision of the artist and master printer Ernesto F. de Soto. Born in Mexico City in 1934, Cuevas played a pivotal role in the transition from the traditional Mexican muralist style to a contemporary Mexican art that challenged preceding traditions. His work is represented internationally in museums and collections, and he is well known among collectors of illustrated books for his suite of illustrations for Kafka's METAMORPHOSIS, first published in THE WORLDS OF KAFKA AND CUEVAS in 1959, and then revisited as an illustrative accompaniment to the text in the 1984 LEC edition.         The Objectivist, Volumes 1-10 Complete (with accompanying publications)

New York: The Objectivist, 1971. This is a complete run of Ayn Rand's publication The Objectivist, volumes 1-10, January 1962 through September 1971 (when it ceased publication). This set consists two parts. --THE FIRST PART is a bound volume of The Objectivist Newsletter, Vols. 1-4, 1962-1965, second printing, 1971. This volume is in fine condition with light age toning to exterior text block. Interior pages are clean and unmarked. After Volume 4 the publication's format changed from newsletter style to magazine style and became simply "The Objectivist." --THE SECOND PART is a complete run of The Objectivist, volumes 5-10, in original softcover form in wraps. These are all in fine condition, clean and unmarked, except for an old rubber band mark on the front or back cover of 3 issues. *** Also included in this set are several publications in original wraps, corresponding in size and format to The Objectivist. These include: 1) "The Intellectual Bankruptcy of Our Age," by Ayn Rand. Lecture first delivered by Ayn Rand at the Ford Hall Forum, Boston, on March 26, 1961, and at Hunter College, University of North Carolina, Johns Hopkins University, Brooklyn College, and Brown University, on various dates in 1961-1962. Published by The Objectivist. 2) "Playboy's Interview with Ayn Rand," interview by Alvin Toffler, originally published in Playboy in March 1964 and reprinted by The Objectivist. 3) "Global Balkanization," by Ayn Rand, lecture delivered at The Ford Hall Forum, Boston, on April 10, 1977. Published by Palo Alto Book Service. 4) "Cultural Update," by Ayn Rand, lecture delivered at the Ford Hall Forum, Boston, on April 16, 1978. Published by Palo Alto Book Service. 5) "A Study Guide to the Ethics of Objectivism," by Leonard Peikoff, revised by Leonard Peikoff and David Kelley. Published by Palo Alto Book Service, 1977. Orange wraps. 6) The Objectivist Forum, Volume 1, No. 2, April 1980. Edited by Harry Binswanger and Leonard Peikoff. Published by TOF Publications, New York. This publication was a new series begun after Rand had discontinued her own. ~~ This complete set forms a valuable representation of Rand's philosophical theories--which included rational egoism, individual rights, and laissez-faire capitalism--set in the context of the time it was published. Each issue contains an article written by Rand. Frequent contributors include Leonard Peikoff and Nathaniel Branden, with other contributors as well, including two articles by Alan Greenspan, an early ardent supporter of Rand. Greenspan's article entitled "Gold and Economic Freedom," discusses the role of gold and the gold standard in a free society. In the last issue, Rand delivers her last essay, entitled "Brief Summary," in which she comments on her theory and its progress, and in which she makes her famous remark: "The monster is Immanuel Kant." Since then it has been argued that she misunderstood Kant. Rand ceased publication of The Objectivist in order to return to a more personal newsletter called "The Ayn Rand Letter." ~~ Each of the two parts in this set as I have described them can also be purchased separately. Please see my separate listings for each. All inquiries will be answered promptly.. Soft Cover. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Lettre autographe signée à l'écrivain Christian Maurel [6 mars 1971]

1971. Lettre. Très bon. Couverture souple.

        Tulsa

New York: Larry Clark, 1971 First hardcover edition, following the 1971 softcover edition published by Lustrum Press. Signed by the author in black ink on the title page. One of 3,000 copies printed by Rapoport Press under the author's supervision. A near fine copy with only slight rubbing to the spine head and tail, crisp and fresh pages, with the author's order form loosely inserted into the front of the text, in the original dust jacket with wear and minor tearing to the spine head and tail, very slight rubbing on the corners. Although this book predates his iconic films by at least two decades, "Tulsa" is quintessential Clark. Ever interested by teenage subcultures, Clark chooses young amphetamine users in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, as his subject matter for this book and includes 50 black and white photographs that examine their daily lives. Like many of his other works, Clark presents a dynamic portrayal of troubled teens, juxtaposing their youthful innocence and dark lifestyles, reminding the reader that "Once the needle goes in it never comes out.". Signed by Author(s). Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Clark, Larry.

Roma: Partito Comunista Italiano / Editoriali Fratelli Spada, 1971. First Edition. Lithographed poster (offset) in three colors; 100cm x 70cm (ca 40" x 28"); on heavy paper. Minor toning; light creases at margins; Near Fine - Grade A/A-. & & A bit of a puzzle: the poster appears to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the formation of the Associazione Bandiera Rossa, an Italian Trotskyist group; but the poster bears the imprint of the PCI, the main-line Marxist-Leninist party in Italy -- an ideological implausibility, even within the chaotic confines of Italian Marxism. Adding further to the confusion is a quotation from Antonio Gramsci (founder of the PCI) in upper right. In any case, a terrific graphic, attributed here to Luciano Prati (whose name we encounter on a few late-70s Italian film posters, but nowhere else). Duke University appears to be the only North American institution to hold a catalogued copy of this work.

        HOYO ("EMBRACE")

Tokyo, Japan: Shashin Hyoronsha Publishing House, 1971. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Tokyo, Japan: Shashin Hyoronsha Publishing House, 1971. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 96 pages. Artist Book. One of the greatest erotic art photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. There is no ISBN. The book is now very rare. A brilliant production by Eikoh Hosoe: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Preface by Yukio Mishima, the greatest Japanese novelist of the 20th century. Mishima famously collaborated with Hosoe on "Ba Ra Kei". Cardboard slipcase with titles printed on black paper that is pasted on the slipcase. Printed in gravure on thick uncoated stock paper by The Nissha Printing Company in Tokyo, Japan to absolutely the highest standards. In pink DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents one of the most stunning and influential explorations of the nude in the history of art and photography. Abstracted, choreographed down to the smallest detail, and yet sensuous (made palpably so by the exquisite gravure printing) , these nudes will not be surpassed. As the title suggests, every image is an embrace, showing a completely nude and physically intimate male and female couple, whose interest to us is the line formed by the closeness of their bodies, which remain discrete and never become one despite their proximity. They are enacting (if not actually engaged in) sexual intercourse, but Hosoe&#39;s goal (and genius) is to make us see and think not about sex but about beauty. The erotic is ultimately an aesthetic, not a sexual, experience. No one can justifiably think of these images as pornographic, which is about arousal. Everyone will see how ravishingly beautiful they are. A "must-have" title for Eikoh Hosoe and erotic art photography book collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and placed in pencil on the half-title page by the artist/photographer: "Eikoh Hosoe Tokyo". This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and placed copy available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 62 gravure plates. "Ba Ra Kei" and "Kamaitachi" were selected as two of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER EIKOH HOSOE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

The Intimate Paul & Linda McCartney-Malibu

A remarkable, original Kodachrome II color photograph print of Paul & Linda McCartney from the April 1971 day shoot in Malibu, but not the widely circulated image used for the iconic, April 16, 1971 LIFE magazine cover. This is another shot, private in feeling and shot close-up with greater detail, believed never printed for sale or reproduced in a book. The 10.875 x 13.875 inches photograph with its beautiful color composition and moving contrasts of emotional openness and reticence communicates Paul and Linda's great mutual love in a way never surpassed. Offered loose as given in the original Kodak color enlargement board folder. AVAILABILITY: Very Rare and Highly Notable. Because of its extraordinary intimacy and emotional nakedness, this far more interesting shot was judged by Paul & Linda as not suitable for public circulation. It was exclusively printed for them 3 months after the shoot; number of prints is unknown, but certainly, a very small number, probably in the range of 5-10. PROVENANCE: Print given to Vincent Romeo, manager to Paul McCartney; subsequently purchased at the first auction of Beatles and McCartney memorabilia from his collection. PRINT DETAIL: Never mounted. No owner markings. 2 scratches, top right corner, far removed from the duo portrait composition: 1) size of a small grain of sand: 2) .3 cm in a half-ring. Scrutinized at extreme close-up in very bright light, light much brighter than it would be displayed in, one can see a slight dulling of Paul's hair on the left side of his head, almost certainly from cleaning, for there has been no other deterioration of the colors in the print. With ordinary viewing conditions, the fault won't be seen. Top tips with very slight wear: outer edges with a light and gentle upward bend: both will vanish when mounted. Rear with finger smudge and a small black bar spot; otherwise clean, and marks can only be seen from the rear. FOLDER CONDITION: Good. DETAIL: Outside crack along fold-over doesn't continue in: light edge wear: some soiling: auction number on upper cover. PHOTOGRAPH PRINT SIZE: 10.875 x 13.875 inches or 276 x 353 mm. FOLDER SIZE: 11.9375 x 14.875 inches. THE PHOTOGRAPH: Photographs at the Malibu shoot were taken by Henry Diltz, the noted photographer of rock 'n' roll musicians and the 60's-70's California rock music scene, using a Pentax SLR 35mm camera with Kodachrome II film. Shot in early April of 1971, (end of the first week-beginning of the second), the photograph was printed from the transparency in July 1971 by Kodak using the K-12 Development Process: Kodak's red stamped seal on the back of the photograph states made by Kodak, July 71R. The day shoot is well documented. The couple was being introduced to a worldwide audience prior to the release of RAM, Paul McCartney's second solo record album after the Beatles' breakup, and the first to contain credited musical contributions from Linda McCartney. Shots were taken by the garden near the pool at the Malibu beach house rented by Paul & Linda, there with their 2 girls, Heather (by Linda's first marriage) and Mary (b. 1969, their first child together). Linda was 3 months pregnant with Stella. Recording had been finished in March and publicity was proceeding for its mid-May release. Paul and Linda were working on the illustrated RAM songbook. Henry Diltz, already a well-known photographer of rock musicians, was asked to come do his "fly on the wall thing". (He had first met Linda in casual come-upon fashion in the summer of 1966 at the Modern Age Photo Lab in New York.) Shot around the same time of day as the LIFE cover shot, Paul & Linda are dressed in the same casual clothes and in the background is a cluster of the same yellow flowers, now just out of focus. DILTZ: A leading rock photographer, he was the official photographer of Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festivals and is known for his friendships with many musicians, especially with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Photographs for more than 250 album sleeves are credited to him, including the Doors' "Morrison Hotel", James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James", Jackson Browne's eponymous debut, the Eagles' "Desperado", and the first album of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Graham Nash has written the foreword for the comprehensive book on his work, "Henry Diltz: Rock On: The Photographs". IMAGES: by request. CATEGORY: Rock and Roll Memorabilia: photographs.

Tokyo: Nora-sha, 1971. Light foxing to the edges, small vertical crease down the spine; near fine in illustrated wrappers in the very good publisher&#39;s card slipcase (a little darkened).. First Edition. Quarto. SIGNED by Kazuo Kitai in English and Japanese. A documentation of the Sanrizuka farmers&#39; opposition and resistance to the government&#39;s plan to build Narita airport. The most powerful example we have seen of an entire subset of little-known Japanese photobooks that deal with this struggle. Although not an official member of Provoke, Kitai was a pioneer in the photographic style championed by the group. His first book, Resistance, published in 1965, was greatly admired by the founders of Provoke, Daido Moriyama and Takuma Nakahira.

1200 gr.

An influential unpublished first novel from this highly controversial writer. .

        Autograph letter signed ("Ronald Tolkien").

"Corpus Christi", 1971. - Small 4to. 1 p. To "My dear Ladies", sending copies of "Verses" and apologising for the delay in so doing since their return "from the ease of The Belmont"; and describing the weather they have enjoyed since: "May continued to be 'according to the poets', on almost every day to its end, in this favoured corner of England. In fact the weather has only just turned bad. We remained in sunshine, immune from storms, even in neighbouring counties, until this morning when at 4 a.m. a Noachic rain began, & is still going on non-stop (8 p.m.). Ones does not read of the great play-cycles of biblical episodes, that used to be performed on Corpus Christi in the open, being 'washed out'. But no doubt they were sometimes. It may have made the play of Noah more realistic, but must have dampened the roaring rout of King Herod! [.]". - At the end, Tolkien notes: "please mark any reply Personal & it will be forwarded unopened". - Tolkien and his wife had spent a week in May at the Belmont Hotel in Sidmouth (The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide, edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond, 2006, pp. 753-4). Tolkien wrote to his son Christopher on 2 June: "Our brief holiday to Sidmouth, which was what Dr Tolhurst's advice boiled down to, was very pleasant indeed. We were lucky in our time in fact the only week available at the hotel since May was such a wonderful month and we came in for a 'spring explosion' of glory" (Letters, 323). The "Verses" sent with the letter were copies of The Adventures of Tom Bomadil and Other Verses from the Red Book, published by Allen & Unwin in 1962. - The form of signature used here "Ronald" as opposed to "J.R.R." Tolkien is rare and was used for friends only; in 1963 he wrote to his publishers, who proposed reproducing the "Ronald" signature in facsimile, "I do not and never have used the signature 'Ronald Tolkien' as an auctorial signature, and I do not think it suitable for this purpose" (3 February 1964, to Ronald Eames, Tolkien Companion, p. 616). - Very light creasing at top.
