The Pentagon Papers: William Bundy's Annotated Copy

Boston 1971 - Books. The Pentagon Papers. Boston: Beacon Press, 1971-1972. First Editions. Five paperback books, volumes I-IV in green printed covers, volume V in orange. 5 3/4 x 9 inches each. Pages varies by volume. Volume V (Critical Essays, edited by Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn) has a Beacon Press review copy slip taped to the half-title and an address label paperclipped to the same page. The label is addressed to Bundy as editor of Foreign Affairs and has a handwritten date, "9/25/72." William Bundy's 5-volume set of the "Senator Gravel Edition" of the Pentagon Papers, with annotations, marginal notes, and two legal-size pages with handwritten notes arranged chronologically. Historical BackgroundDefense Secretary Robert McNamara commissioned a massive study, later called the Pentagon Papers, in 1967 and appointed Pentagon arms control director Leslie Gelb as the project's supervisor. Gelb hired 36 military officers, civilian policy experts, and historians to write the study's monographs. The Pentagon Papers included 4,000 pages of actual documents from the years 1945-67. Daniel Ellsberg, with the aid of his friend Anthony Russo, leaked most of the Pentagon Papers to New York Times reporter Neil Sheehan, who began publishing excerpts on June 13, 1971. Ellsberg later said that the documents "demonstrated unconstitutional behavior by a succession of presidents, the violation of their oath and the violation of the oath of every one of their subordinates." Portions of the "Papers" were subsequently published by Beacon Press. The present copy is William Bundy's set of that edition. The Pentagon Papers revealed steps the Johnson and Nixon administrations had taken to escalate the war in Vietnam without informing the public. President Nixon argued that Ellsberg was guilty of felony treason (under the 1917 Espionage Act) because he had no authority to publish classified documents. Though the Times had been advised not to publish, they did so claiming the First Amendment right to publish information essential to citizens' understanding of their government. Nixon's Attorney General, John Mitchell, obtained a federal court injunction forcing the Times to cease publication. After the Times appealed, the case reached the Supreme Court. A separate case involving the Washington Post's publication of articles based on Ellsberg's leaks also reached the highest court. In June, 1971, the Supreme Court ruled (6-3) that the injunctions were unconstitutional. As Senator Mike Gravel writes in the introduction, "We were told that we had to fight on the continent of Asia so that we would not have to battle on the shores of America. One can accept these arguments only if he has failed to read the Pentagon Papers."William Putnam Bundy (1917-2000) graduated from Yale University and worked as an analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency in the 1950s. He had a long, distinguished service government in the CIA and in the Defense Department. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Far Eastern Affairs in March 1964. His brother McGeorge Bundy was Special Assistant for National Security Affairs to Kennedy and Johnson from 1961-1966. Both are considered primary architects of America's involvement in Vietnam. In The Best and the Brightest, David Halberstam stated that during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, William Bundy's name "would probably be on more pieces of paper dealing with Vietnam over a seven-year period than anyone else's." The publication of The Pentagon Papers represented something of a personal defeat for Bundy, who at the time had a 1,100-page unfinished manuscript in which he selectively paraphrased from classified papers in his possession. The manuscript was rendered unpublishable by the appearance of these volumes.McGeorge Bundy (1919-1996), brother of William Bundy, was one of President Kennedy's closest advisors on national security, and he continued to fill that role for President Johnson durin.         Adolf Hitler, His Part in My Downfall

Michael Joseph, London 1971 - +++++++++ SIGNED and INSCRIBED "To a Right Goon" by Milligan +++++++++ A modern classic and Spike Milligan's most famous book. ++++ SEE PHOTO ++++ Whilst Spike's signature is collectible in itself, it is his witty, fun or nonsense inscriptions that are most sought after. Because of the success of this book Spike went on to write a whole series of books of his war exploits. Hugely amusing because it is written from the point of view of a common soldier so it encapsulates the confusion, the mismanagement, the lack of planning, th e blunders and a whole catalogue of farcical situations that the Army and even Hollywood never admit to, but which one can only imagine were rampant. Black boards with gold titles to spine. There are contemporary photographs, many of which are wonderfully amateur. price clipped.         Kinbaku Taizen / Sadistic play of Bondage

Tokyo: Haga Publications, 1971. First Edition. Softcover.. VG+/VG+. Small 4to. 304pp. Red wraps in photographic dustwrap. Numerous black & white, duotone and colour images. Text in Japanese and English. More images available on request. Crikey, probably Shinoyama's best book! Made in collaboration with Dan (who's a legend in the SM world). According to Dan- "My book editors often confuse S/M with cruelty and they want me to write some 'punishment tale' for them. This type of story is out of my realm. It just gives me the creeps. Rather, my concept of S/M is 'distorted sexual desire' or extreme disorientation. It's a male fantasy derived from love... from seeing a beauty suffer through the sense of shame. Therefore, my style contains a romantic, aesthetic, and sometimes decadent fragrance." Amazing, fun and stylish as anything. So good.

        Beneath the underdog

New York: Alfred A. Knopf,, 1971. His world as composed by Mingus. Edited by Nel King. Octavo. Original silver and black cloth, title in black to spine. In the dust jacket. Light toning, slight foxing to the fore-edge, a very good copy in a slightly rubbed and tanned jacket. First edition of this classic jazz life, inscribed on the half-title, "Best in life Steven - Charles Mingus." "The turbulent voice of Beneath the Underdog, Mingus's self-told story of life and hard times, is audible in every note of the music" (Cook and Morton, Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings). Very rarely found signed, let alone inscribed, and consequently highly desirable thus.

        In A Free State

London: Andre Deutsch, 1971. First edition of the author's Booker Prize-winning novel. Octavo. Signed by the author on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of wear. Trinidadian essayist and novelist V.S. Naipaul has won both the 1971 Booker Prize and the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature. In the same trend of excellence, In a Free State has garnered reviews that "V. S. Naipaul tells stories which show us ourselves and the reality we live in. His use of language is as precise as it is beautiful" (The London Times). "A Tolstoyan spirit....The so-called Third World has produced no more brilliant literary artist" (John Updike, The New Yorker).

        Oh, Nippon! / Oh, Japan!

Tokyo: Miki Shuppan , 1971. First Edition. Softcover.. VG+. Small 4to, Unpaginated (ca 250pp). Printed wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White plates. Text in Japanese. A little rubbing with one small split to the sunfaded spine. Complete and bright otherwise! More images available on request. Ultra rare. Araki's first commercially available book. Cited in The Open book. Still very cut and paste and Xeroxy, his first book is much more playful and less violent than the work he is known for today. Araki constantly had problems with the censors and Oh Nippon! was no exception. Mikuo Nakamura developed a creative mise en page that split the rejected images into sections which could be easily reassembled by folding opposing pages together across multiple spreads. Beautiful and very well designed.
