Secker and Warburg, London 1971 - 8vo, pp. 249. Original printed orange wrappers. Spine a little rolled, a little light edgewear and bumping. About near fine. Uncorrected advance proof copy. EDITOR JOHN BLACKWELL'S COPY WITH HIS INITIALS TO FRONT WRAPPER, AND HIS CORRECTIONS THROUGHOUT. John Blackwell joined Secker and Warburg in the late 1960s when the imprint was still an independent company run by Fredric Warburg himself, and was a constant presence through the company's innumerable corporate takeovers, mergers and changes of managing director. As well as editing Sharpe, John Blackwell played literary midwife to J. M. Coetzee, Michael Moorcock, Tom McGuane, Malcolm Bradbury and Louis de Bernieres, among many others. His emendations in this, his own copy, are made in red ink, and are mostly typographical and grammatical corrections; here and there, deletions have been made in blue.

        Tulsa

New York: Larry Clark 1971 - First hardcover edition, following the 1971 softcover edition published by Lustrum Press. Signed by the author in black ink on the title page. One of 3,000 copies printed by Rapoport Press under the author's supervision. A near fine copy with only slight rubbing to the spine head and tail, crisp and fresh pages, with the author's order form loosely inserted into the front of the text, in the original dust jacket with wear and minor tearing to the spine head and tail, very slight rubbing on the corners. Although this book predates his iconic films by at least two decades, "Tulsa" is quintessential Clark. Ever interested by teenage subcultures, Clark chooses young amphetamine users in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, as his subject matter for this book and includes 50 black and white photographs that examine their daily lives. Like many of his other works, Clark presents a dynamic portrayal of troubled teens, juxtaposing their youthful innocence and dark lifestyles, reminding the reader that "Once the needle goes in it never comes out." Scott's "painstakingly researched Quartet which examines the lives of ordinary Anglo-Indians against the background of the end of Empire [the five years from the Quit India campaign of the Congress Committee to Indian independence, in 1947]. These novels constitute Scott's principal claim to be regarded as a major post-war writer [The Times, in fact, called Scott's quartet "one of the most important landmarks of post-war fiction."] . . . . The Quartet is still perhaps underestimated as an analysis of the pre-Independence roots of the racism Salman Rushdie identified in the 1980s under the label 'the New Empire within Britain.' Scott sacrificed his life to the writing of the Quartet, becoming something of a monomaniacal recluse with tendencies toward alcoholism and occasional domestic violence. His death from cancer, in 1978, in London came at the time his work was just beginning to be appreciated." (The Literary Encyclopedia) TN. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Ancestors

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1971 - First edition. Fine in very good plus dustwrapper with a little rubbing and a couple of tiny nicks. Novel set in Ohio in 1818. Warmly Inscribed by the author to his fellow editor at *The New Yorker* Rachel MacKenzie: "For Rachel with love, Bill. June 21, 1971." Rachel MacKenzie replaced Katherine White as the fiction editor at *The New Yorker* on the recommendation of May Sarton. During her tenure at the magazine MacKenzie was noted for her nurturing and editing of, among others, Sarton, Philip Roth, Muriel Spark, and especially Isaac Bashevis Singer. MacKenzie's enthusiasm led to the magazine devoting an entire issue to Spark's *The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie*. However, the magazine wouldn't publish *Goodbye, Columbus* as she recommended because William Shawn was too squeamish over the more "frank" aspects of the novella. See this book in 3D on our site.

        The Earthsea Trilogy

London: Victor Gollancz,, 1971-72-73. A Wizard of Earthsea; The Tombs of Atuan; The Farthest Shore. 3 volumes, octavo. Original brown, blue, and grey boards, titles to spines gilt, coloured and map endpapers. With the dust jackets. Some minor spotting to top edges of text blocks, spines a little rolled. A fresh, bright set in the beautiful jackets with only the mildest fading of the spine panels. First UK editions, first impressions of the novels comprising the Earthsea trilogy, one of the most beloved fantasy series of the 20th century. Le Guin first explored the world of Earthsea in her 1964 short story "The World of Unbinding", and the three main novels were first published in the US in 1968, 1971, and 1972. Two other Earthsea novels, Tehanu and The Other Wind, followed in 1990 and 2001, but it is the original three that established Le Guin as one of America's foremost fantasy authors. This is an uncommonly beautiful and fresh set in the stylish dust jackets.
