Kinbaku Taizen / Sadistic play of Bondage

Tokyo: Haga Publications, 1971. First Edition. Softcover.. VG+/VG+. Small 4to. 304pp. Red wraps in photographic dustwrap. Numerous black & white, duotone and colour images. Text in Japanese and English. More images available on request. Crikey, probably Shinoyama's best book! Made in collaboration with Dan (who's a legend in the SM world). According to Dan- "My book editors often confuse S/M with cruelty and they want me to write some 'punishment tale' for them. This type of story is out of my realm. It just gives me the creeps. Rather, my concept of S/M is 'distorted sexual desire' or extreme disorientation. It's a male fantasy derived from love... from seeing a beauty suffer through the sense of shame. Therefore, my style contains a romantic, aesthetic, and sometimes decadent fragrance." Amazing, fun and stylish as anything. So good.

Light toning, slight foxing to the fore-edge, a very good copy in a slightly rubbed and tanned jacket.         In A Free State

London: Andre Deutsch, 1971. First edition of the author's Booker Prize-winning novel. Octavo. Signed by the author on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of wear. Trinidadian essayist and novelist V.S. Naipaul has won both the 1971 Booker Prize and the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature. In the same trend of excellence, In a Free State has garnered reviews that "V. S. Naipaul tells stories which show us ourselves and the reality we live in. His use of language is as precise as it is beautiful" (The London Times). "A Tolstoyan spirit....The so-called Third World has produced no more brilliant literary artist" (John Updike, The New Yorker).

        Oh, Nippon! / Oh, Japan!

Tokyo: Miki Shuppan , 1971. First Edition. Softcover.. VG+. Small 4to, Unpaginated (ca 250pp). Printed wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White plates. Text in Japanese. A little rubbing with one small split to the sunfaded spine. Complete and bright otherwise! More images available on request. Ultra rare. Araki's first commercially available book. Cited in The Open book. Still very cut and paste and Xeroxy, his first book is much more playful and less violent than the work he is known for today. Araki constantly had problems with the censors and Oh Nippon! was no exception. Mikuo Nakamura developed a creative mise en page that split the rejected images into sections which could be easily reassembled by folding opposing pages together across multiple spreads. Beautiful and very well designed.

        The Boo

Verona, Virginia: McClure, 1971. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. --- FIRST EDITION / SECOND PRINTING --- Publisher's baby blue cloth covered boards stamped on front and spine in white. Original dust jacket. A near fine example with a slight bump and fray to lower front corner but otherwise unblemished in a very good lightly edge worn and rubbed dust jacket which has one faint stain to crown of spine and extending to the upper rear corner. A very presentable and attractive example of Conroy's notoriously scarce first book which served as the basis for the film of the same title. The dust jacket is not clipped and is identical to that found on the first printings. Given the rather obscure publisher coupled with the extremely limited size of the first two printings fresh copies of this early vintage are scarce to the market.

Kim Fowley Visits America: Not Just Another Historic Journey

Kim Fowley World Press Headquarters, Hollywood 1971 - Five issues (of eight issued?) as follows: Dispatch #3: Boston, 2pp. (two leaves printed rectos only); Dispatch #4: Philadelphia/Cleveland, 3pp. (two leaves printed rectos and one verso); Dispatch #5: Detroit, 3pp. (two leaves printed rectos and 1 verso); Dispatch #6: Chicago, 3pp. (two leaves printed rectos and 1 verso); Dispatch #8: Meltzer Reflects, [3]pp. (two leaves, printed rectos and 1 verso), photographs, facsimile of manuscript. Old folds, a couple of tiny nicks, near fine. A fascinating archive of press releases by one of the earliest rock critics, Richard Meltzer, apparently created by him for the producer, performer, hipster, (self-)promoter, and svengali, Kim Fowley. Fowley had and continues to have a colorful career in the music industry, beginning in 1959; he currently has a radio show on Sirius radio's Underground Garage station. Aside from working with Frank Zappa, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Gene Vincent, KISS, The Modern Lovers and many other, he is probably best known for his role in the formation and promotion of the Joan Jett and Cheri Currie-led band The Runaways. In the 2010 film *The Runaways* he is played by Michael Shannon in suitably manic fashion. *OCLC* locates no copies of the original issues, although excerpts appear in one of Meltzer's anthologies of criticism: *A Whore Just Like the Rest: The Music Writings of Richard Meltzer.*The dispatches document Fowley's wild, gonzo-esque, and occasionally X-rated progress as he traverses the U.S. at various rock venues, parties, and radio stations, apparently in the employment of Capitol Records. The final page of Dispatch #8 is a facsimile of a manuscript of a declaration of women's rights, apparently bemoaning the fact that there isn't enough good pornography for women and that "any men who derives pleasure from the abuse and degradation of women deserves anything and everything that the Women's Movement may do to him! Otherwise, hail Capitol Records." Meltzer also suggests that women have their way with Fowley and Meltzer, allow them no pleasure, and then castrate them, although his sincerity may be in some doubt on this point. Meltzer started his career in 1967 writing for *Crawdaddy*, and has published several books of criticism, as well as performed with the punk band VOM. Rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

J.B.Lippincott, Philadelphia and New York, 1971. First Edition, first printing - this copy inscribed twice by the author to the same recipients, the first inscription dated 1973 and the second ("To Ginette and Paul-Emile who will always be my first family in France") in 1974. 8vo. 145pp. White cloth lettered in red at spine and with a two flowers red-stamped to upper board. The novel was published shortly after the release of the movie (the film flopped upon release but is now ranked at number 45 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 Funniest Movies of all Time). Inscribed copies of this book are most uncommon.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good.

Illustrated with several reproductions to an issue. Near fine with marginal toning and a single short 1/3" closed tear to margin only of issue no. 1. & & All issues published of perhaps the most legendary art zine of the early 60's, which chronicled the rise of Abstract Expressionism and other goings on. No. 3 includes a review by Jasper Johns of Marcel Duchamp's The Bridge Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even. Issue four critiques the Peter Selz essay for MOMA's Mark Rothko exhibition - by reproducing the entire essay, with footnotes added and the critique running parallel. Issue six was devoted to artist statements on their own work, including a piece by Alex Katz, Wolf Kahn, Philip Pearlswtein, Mary Frank, Milton Resnick et al. The issues also include poetry and critical articles by Margaret Randall. The original issues of Scrap appeared on extremely cheap newsprint, and few examples survive. At some point (the MOMA catalogue entry points to 1971) Geist made a reprint on better paper, reportedly also in very small numbers - we believe this to be that 1971 reprint set - but still extremely scarce in the reprint.

New York: George Braziller, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. 8vo. Near fine in like jacket. Touches of wear to extremities. Else bright and sharp. INSCRIBED by Dahlberg to book's dedicee, Lew Feldman: "My dear Lew. I do hope the Boke [underlined] dedicated to you will please you. Your friend Edward. Oct 21, 70. NYC." Additionally laid in are two typed signed letters dated 1970 from Dahlberg to Feldman in original envelopes (100+ and 25+ words each respectively), one xerox of Kirkus review of CONFESSIONS, as well as one typed signed letter from Edwin Seaver at George Braziller conveying the book to Feldman. The dedication copy of this late work by the prolific Dahlberg, a memoir of the bohemian writer's life as well as his intellectual and sexual development. Modeled in part on St. Augustine and Rousseau, CONFESSIONS follows-up and in many ways revises his highly regarded autobiography BECAUSE I WAS FLESH (1964). Warmly inscribed to Lew Feldman, famed book dealer of the House of El Dieff, to whom CONFESSIONS is dedicated ("To Lew D. Feldman with affectionate gratitude."). Feldman and Dahlberg were close, as evidenced not only by the dedication, but also by the typed letter included when the book was sent by the publisher to Feldman. In part: "Thank you so much for your enchanting reply; such a human answer itself merits the dedication I so joyfully gave to the man who has done so much for me." And later in the same letter, Dahlberg adds in his own hand: "Lew, you have great human sweetness as archaic nowadays as the learing [?] of the heart which is the only erudition that a worth a [damn?]." An exceptional association between one of America's most prominent men of letters and and one of her most prominent bookmen. 312pp. with index.
