Arts of Asia (full run of magazine from 1971 debut through 1976, 1980-1983, and several other complete years, along with odd volumes from still more years between 1977 and 2003. 165 issues in total).

Kowloon, Hong Kong: Arts of Asia, 1971-2003. First Edition. Softcover. Very good +. Quarto, 165 issues in total. Volumes range from very good to fine condition, with some creasing or curling to the corners of some volumes. Overall, however, a lovely, crisp, bright collection that sat on the shelf of a devoted subscriber for many years. Flipping through various volumes, many of the original inserts appear to be present. Includes a full run of the first 6 years of the magazine, which would give the completist collector a big head start! For a more detailed list of the issues included, please click "more images" and see the itemized list there, or contact me with any other questions. NOTE: The magazine was published on heavy glossy paper, and thus this collection is very heavy and will cost extra to ship, even domestically. We would discourage international customers from ordering this set unless they are willing to spend perhaps up to a few hundred dollars on shipping, and are willing to wait while several individual boxes are sorted through customs, which may not all arrive at the same time.

Hoyo ("embrace") : Photographs By Eikoh Hosoe

Tokyo, Japan: Shashin Hyoronsha Publishing House(1971). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 96 pages. Collection of nudes, presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest erotic art photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Eikoh Hosoe: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Preface by Yukio Mishima, the greatest Japanese novelist of the 20th century. Mishima famously collaborated with Hosoe on "Ba Ra Kei". Cardboard slipcase with titles printed on black paper that is pasted on the slipcase. Printed in gravure on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper by The Nissha Printing Company in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. In pink DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Eikoh Hosoe's "Hoyo". One of the most stunning and most influential explorations of the nude in the history of photography. Abstracted, choreographed down to the smallest detail, and yet sensuous, made palpably so by exquisite gravure printing, these nudes will not be surpassed. As the title suggests, every image is an embrace, showing a completely nude and physically intimate male and female couple, whose interest to us is the line formed by the closeness of their bodies, which remain discrete and never become one despite their proximity. They are re-enacting for Hosoe's camera (if are not actually engaged in) sexual intercourse. But Hosoe's goal - and genius - is to make us see and think not about sex, but about the power of beauty: The erotic is an aesthetic, not a sexual, experience. It's about pleasure, not arousal. Or as one of Hosoe's personal idols famously wrote: "Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power" (Oscar Wilde). An absolute "must-have" title for Eikoh Hosoe collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and placed in pencil on the half-title page by the artist/photographer: "Eikoh Hosoe Tokyo". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great erotic art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and placed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: While the slipcase is imperfect, the book itself is fine. If both were perfect, this First Edition would command twice as much. A rare signed copy thus. 62 gravure plates. "Ba Ra Kei" and "Kamaitachi" were selected as two of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER EIKOH HOSOE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

El Alamein to the River Sangro. Normandy to the Baltic, a magnificent copy of the finely bound, signed and limited edition, hand-numbered copy #42, signed by Montgomery of Alamein

London: The Arcadia Press, 1971. Signed limited edition. Full leather. This is a pristine copy of the finely bound signed, and limited edition of Montgomery's account of his command of the Eighth Army during the Second World War. The Arcadia Press published 265 copies thus on 23 October 1972 for the 30th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein, extravagantly bound in full, sumptuous black morocco goatskin. The binding merits superlatives, compelling in both craftsmanship and aesthetic, with raised spine bands, gilt print and decoration (including Montgomery's facsimile signature on the front cover), beautifully patterned black and white endpapers, gilt decorated turn-ins and spine ends, head and foot bands, and all edges gilt. The contents feature a color frontispiece portrait of Montgomery and a profusion of maps, plans, and photographs, as well as an index. Montgomery inked his signature - “Montgomery of Alamein” - in blue directly below his printed name on the title page and the title page verso bears the hand-numbered limitation “42” in black. The volume is housed in the publisher's black buckram slipcase. Condition of both volume and slipcase is immaculately fine, with no discernible wear or flaws. Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, KG, GCB, DSO, PC (1887-1976) passed through Sandhurst "without distinction but without difficulty also" and began what would be fifty years in the British Army. "It was the First World War that changed Montgomery from a bumptious, querulous infantry subaltern, constantly at odds with authority, into a decorated company commander, outstanding staff officer—and trainer of men." The First World War showed Montgomery 'that the whole art of war is to gain your objective with as little loss as possible.' This edict made Montgomery "the outstanding British field commander of the twentieth century.” Montgomery earned his fame in North Africa during the Second World War. In August 1942, Churchill gave Montgomery command of the Eighth Army, where Montgomery famously beat Rommel and oversaw defeat of Axis forces in North Africa. He went on to command the Eighth Army in Sicily and Italy. From the introduction: “This book tells the story of the Eighth Army's operations in the Mediterranean from El Alamein, 13 August 1942, to the crossing of the River Sangro in Italy, and subsequent operations there until 31 December 1943.” Montgomery states in his Foreword: “I am anxious to place on record an authoritative and factual account of the activities of the Eighth Army during the period that I commanded… This book contains the story of those days and I have based it on my personal diary.” With characteristic self-effacing modesty, Montgomery states of his Eighth Army: “It went from Alamein to half way up Italy without losing a battle or even a serious action, and without ever withdrawing a yard.” Montgomery was recalled to England in December 1943 to become commander-in-chief of Allied ground forces during the D-day landings, responsible for two million British, American, Canadian, Polish, Free French, and other Allied troops. After the war he rose to Chief of the Imperial General Staff and was elevated to Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. He retired in 1958 as deputy commander of NATO's European forces. Arrogant, outspoken, and politically inept, Montgomery seldom missed either controversy or opportunity for self-promotion. During the war he was often criticized by Allied commanders for his caution and slowness to strike. Montgomery's uncharitable accusations in his postwar memoirs lost him the friendship of President Eisenhower and forced Montgomery to publicly apologize to a fellow Field Marshal whom - ironically - he accused of being too slow to fight. Montgomery earned further criticism for declaring support for Apartheid and praising communist Chinese leadership. Montgomery remains a larger-than-life figure. This is an exquisite signed edition of his own record of the command that imparted his fame.

        Float, E.A.T., Blue

New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1971. Sculpture tested, but not working, otherwise appears near fine. Box with long, closed tear at the top fold, some creases, and overall signs of light wear. Scarce.. Limited Edition, number 9/10. Motorized plastic sculpture in stenciled and spray-painted cardboard box. SIGNED and numbered on the battery case door at the base of the sculpture. Apparently a limited edition release of the more common white Float sculpture also issued by MoMA via their gift shop. The spray-painted stencil reads "E.A.T. / BLUE / 9-10 / R.B. '71". Dated a year after his seminal work on the Pepsi Pavilion, created by Experiments in Design and Technology (E.A.T.). In addition to the animations for which he is best known, Robert Breer also created a series of "floats", motorized abstract shapes that he would parade, often through rural landscapes. This MoMA edition represents a miniaturized version of the Float sculpture series. Manufactured by Bandai, the Japanese plastic toy producer.

First printing. 30,5 x 26,5 cm. 24 unpaginierte Sx. OKarton. [Vgl.         Kinbaku Taizen / Sadistic play of Bondage

Haga Publications, Tokyo 1971 - Small 4to. 304pp. Red wraps in photographic dustwrap with Obi band. Numerous black & white, duotone and colour images. Text in Japanese and English. Probably Shinoyama's best book. Made in collaboration with Dan (who's a legend in the SM world). According to Dan- "My book editors often confuse S/M with cruelty and they want me to write some 'punishment tale' for them. This type of story is out of my realm. It just gives me the creeps. Rather, my concept of S/M is 'distorted sexual desire' or extreme disorientation. It's a male fantasy derived from love. from seeing a beauty suffer through the sense of shame. Therefore, my style contains a romantic, aesthetic, and sometimes decadent fragrance." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Float, E.A.T., Blue

New York: The Museum of Modern Art 1971 - Limited Edition, number 9/10. Sculpture tested, but not working, otherwise appears near fine. Box with long, closed tear at the top fold, some creases, and overall signs of light wear. Scarce. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
