Canto y grito mi liberacion (y lloro mis desmadrazgos...)

El Paso, TX: Mictla Publications, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8-3/4 by 11-1/4 inches. Sánchez's first book, a key collection of poetry from the Chicano Movement. Sánchez spent most of the 1960s in prison where he earned his GED and began writing. He later went on to receive a doctorate and became one of the leading figures in Chicano poetry. Lomelí and Urioste call this book 'An excellent poetic manifesto.' It is also one of the key works of the Chicano Movement. Reprinted several times, this is the only edition in a large format that allows Sanchez's poems to spread out on the page as he intended. Illustrated by Manuel Acosta, with line drawings and two lovely color plates. Reportedly one of 2000 copies, but much scarcer than the print run would suggest. First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in a very good dust jacket. The jacket has some spotting, a common issue with this title. However, the thin paper of the jacket is virtually free of tears. A nice copy of a scarce book.

The Anatomical Basis of Medical Practice

Baltimore: The Williams & Wilkins Company, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. First Edition. Hardcover. 11 1/4" X 8 3/4". xv, 907pp. Association copy, warmly inscribed by Drs. R Frederick Becker, James W. Wilson, and John A. Gehweiler to Margaret Gehweiler, John A. Gehweiler's mother, to front free endpapers. Green cloth over boards, with upper board and spine lettered in gilt over black, with human heart outlined in black to upper board. Mild edgewear to binding, with rubbing and gentle bumping to corners and head and tail of spine, firm and sound. A very unique example of the notorious 1971 textbook for first-year medical students that caused public outcry, as well as a boycott initiated by the Association of Women in Science, for its use of centerfold-style images to illustrate female suface anatomy and for its many impudent comments regarding women ("If you think that once you have seen the back side of one female, you've seen them all, then you haven't sat in a sidewalk café in Italy where girl watching is a cultivated art. Your authors, whose zeal in this regard never flags, refer you to Figures III-IV and VIII as proof that female backs can keep an interest in anatomy alive."). Time Magazine called the book "closer to Playboy than to Gray's Anatomy," in its October 9, 1972 issue, the cover of which, coincidentally, featured Pat Nixon and Eleanor McGovern as "The Other Campaigners." Indeed, the photographer, Peter Gowland, from which Becker, Wilson, and Gehweiler purchased the controversial photographs had been published previously in Playboy. This unique association copy provides a stark contrast between the criticism the book received and the authors' lack of anticipation for such a response. Becker, Wilson, and Gehweiler's inscriptions to the latter's mother seem to indicate a sense of pride in the work, with Becker calling her "our fondest admirer" and Gehlweiler noting the "many sacrifices over so many years" his mother made for his education, going on to state that without her, "this book could never have been written.

This MoMA edition represents a miniaturized version of the Float sculpture series. Manufactured by Bandai, the Japanese plastic toy producer.

Kowloon, Hong Kong: Arts of Asia, 1971-2003. First Edition. Softcover. Very good +. Quarto, 165 issues in total. Volumes range from very good to fine condition, with some creasing or curling to the corners of some volumes. Overall, however, a lovely, crisp, bright collection that sat on the shelf of a devoted subscriber for many years. Flipping through various volumes, many of the original inserts appear to be present. Includes a full run of the first 6 years of the magazine, which would give the completist collector a big head start! For a more detailed list of the issues included, please click "more images" and see the itemized list there, or contact me with any other questions. NOTE: The magazine was published on heavy glossy paper, and thus this collection is very heavy and will cost extra to ship, even domestically. We would discourage international customers from ordering this set unless they are willing to spend perhaps up to a few hundred dollars on shipping, and are willing to wait while several individual boxes are sorted through customs, which may not all arrive at the same time.

Hoyo ("embrace") : Photographs By Eikoh Hosoe

Tokyo, Japan: Shashin Hyoronsha Publishing House(1971). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 96 pages. Collection of nudes, presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest erotic art photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Eikoh Hosoe: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Preface by Yukio Mishima, the greatest Japanese novelist of the 20th century. Mishima famously collaborated with Hosoe on "Ba Ra Kei". Cardboard slipcase with titles printed on black paper that is pasted on the slipcase. Printed in gravure on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper by The Nissha Printing Company in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. In pink DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Eikoh Hosoe's "Hoyo". One of the most stunning and most influential explorations of the nude in the history of photography. Abstracted, choreographed down to the smallest detail, and yet sensuous, made palpably so by exquisite gravure printing, these nudes will not be surpassed. As the title suggests, every image is an embrace, showing a completely nude and physically intimate male and female couple, whose interest to us is the line formed by the closeness of their bodies, which remain discrete and never become one despite their proximity. They are re-enacting for Hosoe's camera (if are not actually engaged in) sexual intercourse. But Hosoe's goal - and genius - is to make us see and think not about sex, but about the power of beauty: The erotic is an aesthetic, not a sexual, experience. It's about pleasure, not arousal. Or as one of Hosoe's personal idols famously wrote: "Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power" (Oscar Wilde). An absolute "must-have" title for Eikoh Hosoe collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and placed in pencil on the half-title page by the artist/photographer: "Eikoh Hosoe Tokyo". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great erotic art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and placed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: While the slipcase is imperfect, the book itself is fine. If both were perfect, this First Edition would command twice as much. A rare signed copy thus. 62 gravure plates. "Ba Ra Kei" and "Kamaitachi" were selected as two of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER EIKOH HOSOE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

THE VANTAGE POINT: PERSPECTIVES OF THE PRESIDENCY 1963-1969 Inscribed to Cyrus Vance

Holt Rinehart Winston (1971), New York - Bound in publisher's flimsy and impractical padded red leather housed in a custom-made cloth clamshell box. Illustrated with photographs. Copy #47 of 300 SIGNED by the author on the limitation page. In addition, LBJ has filled the dedication page with an absolutely superb INSCRIPTION to his Deputy Secretary of Defense: "To/Cy Vance/Loyal sturdy wise/a good man to have as friend/and associate--/from his friend/Lyndon B. Johnson Xmas 71." Vance, whose ownership signature is on the front endpaper, is cited about 20 times in the index. Cyrus Vance was general counsel of the Defense Department and then the Secretary of the Army during the John F. Kennedy administration when units were sent to northern Mississippi in 1962 to protect James Meredith and ensure that the court-ordered integration of the University of Mississippi took place. As Deputy Secretary of Defense under Johnson, he first supported the Vietnam War but by the late 1960s changed his views and resigned from office advising the president to pull out of South Vietnam. In 1968 he served as a delegate to peace talks in Paris and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969. Serving as Secretary of State in the Jimmy Carter administration, Vance was heavily instrumental in Carter's decision to return the Canal Zone to Panama and in the Camp David Accords agreement between Israel and Egypt. Vance resigned in opposition to Carter's plan, which eventually failed, to rescue the Iranian hostages. In the movie ARGO, Vance was portrayed by actor Bob Gunton. Typical wear to this terrible choice for a binding with some separation of the covers. Most copies of this scarce book that we have seen over the years have been heavily repaired or rebound. This copy is untouched and still about Very Good and with a great inscription. Very Good in a Fine clamshell box [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
