Charlie Chaplin - "His Last Day in America 1952"

1971. Original Avedon print, titled and signed by the artist in 1971. 19-3/4" x 15-3/4". Richard Avedon began his career as a fashion photographer in 1945, and he came to be known as the preeminent contemporary American portrait photographer. This image, of the one-time lovable Little Tramp posing as the Devil on his last day in the U.S., is one of Avedon's most famous, and one of the most famous images of Chaplin. Chaplin, who had long had a taste for teenage girls as his lovers and wives, was hounded by years of persecution for his sexual proclivities and his left-leaning views. In 1944 he was involved in a high-profile scandal when he was indicted on charges involving a young actress he had brought to California and, although he was exonerated on all counts, the negative publicity began a series of events culminating in his voluntary exile from the U.S. eight years later. In addition, the FBI had stepped up its investigations of him as a result of his public statements in support of Russia and Soviet Communism. In 1952, when Chaplin left for England to promote his film "Limelight," the U.S. Attorney General used the opportunity to revoke his re-entry permit -- Chaplin was never an American citizen -- unless he agreed to an even more intensive scrutiny of his private life. Chaplin opted instead to settle in Switzerland with his third wife, Oona O'Neill, the daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill. This was the last image of him in America, a pointed reference to his demonization by the press and the American government. Fine.

Erste eigene Ausstellung in Zürich. 1200 gr. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Inscribed by Lucas Samaras to Les Navarre, the director of the Harry Abrams Art Gallery. In fine condition. Books signed or inscribed by Samaras are fairly uncommon.         Two Letters, regarding God Bless America

      - A pair of typed letters signed by Irving Berlin ("Irving" and "Irving Berlin"), 1971 and 1972, to Gerald G. Wagner. In the first letter, dated December 1st 1971, and signed in full, Berlin encloses "autographed copies of the program and U.N. song. Other than what you and Leon Leonidoff told me, I have heard of how well the song was received which, of course, pleases me. He goes on, "Now, about the U.N. song. As I told you on the phone, I think it would be mistake to do anything about it right now. However, a situation may arise in the future when it will be timely to officially turn the copyright over to the United Nations. That is, of course, if they want it. Personally, I’m very proud to have written it". The second letter is dated November 21st 1972. Berlin writes, "Mrs. Berlin and I did indeed hear the President’s speech, and, of course, I was delighted with the God Bless America ending." He then notes that he was also deeply touched by the Republican Convention having ended with a rendition of God Bless America. He goes on, "I take it for granted that you, along with millions of other Americans including Mrs. Berlin and myself, are delighted by Nixon’s ‘four more years’. By the way, did you know that this phrase was the title of the second campaign song I wrote for President Eisenhower? The first was I Like Ike." In very fine condition. Letters by Berlin that mention his celebrated patriotic song are rare. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

This copy SIGNED on the front cover by the group's most famous member, Nobuyoshi Araki, with a drawing of a penis pissing into a toilet. What follows inside is a catalogue of gross Tokyo shit holes and crude bathroom graffiti. Despite the disgusting subject matter, the book is more satiric celebration than a condemnation of public sanitation! (Parr / Badger, v1, 296). Very light wear, else fine in photo-illustrated wrappers. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        TULSA

Lustrum Press, New York 1971 - np, profusely illustrated in b&w. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Long before "Kids", "Another Day in Paradise" and "Bully", Larry Clark's groundbreaking first book was the real thing. A gritty, voyeuristic photo essay of the author's life amongst youthful petty criminals and drug addicts in Oklahoma, "Tulsa" forever changed the landscape of acceptability for the photographic book in the latter half of the 20th Century. An internally bright copy of the 1971 Lustrum Press true first edition (cited on page 260 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 272-73 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 25 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 208-09 of "The Book of 101 Books") whose wrappers show some noticeable wear and soft creases. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.
