        TYPED LETTER - SIGNED

Houston, Texas 1971 - Alan L. Bean - Typed Letter Signed Typed letter thanking an individual for a clock radio that was sent to him. On NASA letterhead, measured 8" X 10 1/2" and dated April 6, 1971. "Dear Captain Ozanne, I just received the very beautiful clock radio you sent me. It is certainly one of the most impressive gifts I have received since returning from the moon, and I know you must have spent a great deal of time designing and building it. It brings back the number of fond memories concerning the flight of Apollo 12. I have the clock in my office where I can refer to it when necessary and I am going to take the radio home. You have been so kind that I don't feel that I could really adequately repay you for your kindness. Please give my best wishes to your family. Sincerely, Alan L. Bean". Alan Bean was one of the third group of astronauts named by NASA in October 1963. He served as backup astronaut for the Gemini 10 and Apollo 9 missions. Captain Bean was lunar module pilot on Apollo 12, mans second lunar landing. In November 1969, Captain Bean and Captain Pete Conrad landed in the moons Ocean of Stormsafter a flight of some 250,000 miles. They explored the lunar surface, deployed several lunar surface experiments, and installed the first nuclear power generator station on the moon to provide the power source. Captain Richard Gordon remained in lunar orbit photographing landing sites for future missions. Captain Bean was spacecraft commander of Skylab Mission II (SL-3), July 29 to September 25, 1973. With him on the 59-day, 24,400,000 mile world record setting flight were scientist-astronaut Dr. Owen K. Garriott and Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Jack R. Lousma. Mission II accomplished 150% of its pre-mission forecast goals. On his next assignment, Captain Bean was backup spacecraft commander of the United States flight crew for the joint American-Russian Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Captain Bean has logged 1,671 hours and 45 minutes in space of which 10 hours and 26 minutes were spent in EVAs on the moon and in earth orbit. Captain Bean has flown 27 types of military aircraft as well as many civilian airplanes. He has logged more than 7,145 hours flying time including 4,890 hours in jet aircraft. Captain Bean retired from the Navy in October 1975 but continued as head of the Astronaut Candidate Operations and Training Group within the Astronaut Office in a civilian capacity. Bean resigned from NASA in June 1981 to devote his full time to painting. He said his decision was based on the fact that, in his 18 years as an astronaut, he was fortunate enough to visit worlds and see sights no artists eye, past or present, has ever viewed firsthand and he hopes to express these experiences through the medium of art. He is pursuing this dream at his home and studio in Houston. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Ancestors

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. (1971). First. First edition. Fine in very good plus dustwrapper with a little rubbing and a couple of tiny nicks. Novel set in Ohio in 1818. Warmly Inscribed by the author to his fellow editor at The New Yorker Rachel MacKenzie: "For Rachel with love, Bill. June 21, 1971." Rachel MacKenzie replaced Katherine White as the fiction editor at The New Yorker on the recommendation of May Sarton. During her tenure at the magazine MacKenzie was noted for her nurturing and editing of, among others, Sarton, Philip Roth, Muriel Spark, and especially Isaac Bashevis Singer. MacKenzie's enthusiasm led to the magazine devoting an entire issue to Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. However, the magazine wouldn't publish Goodbye, Columbus as she recommended because William Shawn was too squeamish over the more "frank" aspects of the novella. .

[Photo Album]: 1971 Baltimore City Fair Rock Concert

[Baltimore. 1971]. Oblong folio. Bradbound and string-tied black cardstock album with 114 mounted black and white photographs. Album measures 18" x 11.5". Each photo is 6" x 4". One photo has been excised resulting in some slight damage to another, evidence that two others have fallen out, else the images are mostly fine, a few have minor wear. Covers are modestly worn. A substantive group of photos capturing the hippie zeitgeist. Includes images of hippies cavorting at an outdoor rock concert at the Baltimore City Fair in 1971, with shots of local rock bands on stage. Activities and views include wild free-form dancing, snake-handling, baby hippies in the mud, hippie chicks with see-through tops, drinking, frisbee gyrations, dirty and shirtless hippies, etc. Also includes images of a hip looking African-American, Clarence Mitchell III, a quasi-militant alternative candidate for mayor of Baltimore in 1971. The Baltimore City Fair was an attempt to control political dynamics through public space/feel good vibeology, an effort made by the city in reaction to the Civil Rights era and civil unrest. It was news enough to be covered by The Nation and written about by Calvin Trillin in The New Yorker. Also includes many photos of teens at another event, apparently a dance in a high school gym, where the activities are confined mostly to dancing, mugging for the camera, and light- to heavy-petting and making out. A wonderful window into the youth of the late hippie period. .

However, the magazine wouldn't publish Goodbye, Columbus as she recommended because William Shawn was too squeamish over the more "frank" aspects of the novella. .
