Fukushu-Shudan, Geribara Five (The Diarrhea-Gut Reproductive Collective of 5), Tokyo 1971 - First edition, first printing. Soft cover. Photographically illustrated wrappers. Photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki, Yoshio Takese, Koji Yaehata, Naohosia Tabogami, Fukuo Ikeda and Tomoko Kamiguchi ("Miss Geribara"). Unpaginated (104 pp.), with 300 black and white illustrations. 10 x 7-1/4 inches. CONDITION: Fine. A rare Near Mint copy. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume I. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2004).] The second provocative book in a trilogy published by Geribara 5, a small avant-garde collective formed following the dissolution of the Provoke group. An excerpt from "The Photobook: A History, Volume 1" by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger: "Mizugi no Yangu Redii-Tachi (Young Ladies in Bathing Suits), is equally controversial [as Benjo (Toilet), the Geribara 5's first book]. It is a strictly Conceptual book, each page containing a trio of three-quarter-length portraits of teenage girls on the beach, the majority posing somewhat self-consciously for the camera. The sheer repetitiveness of these bland images tells us much about the homogeneity of teenage culture, but that is not the controversial aspect. Beneath [or above] each photograph is the girl's address and telephone number, printed in facsimile handwriting. The inevitable invasion of privacy inherent in the process of taking and publishing pictures is one thing. If the personal details.were valid [which, according to Araki, approximately one-half were], the book raises issues that go beyond imagistic representation into areas verging on abuse and sexual harassment."         Charlie Chaplin - "His Last Day in America 1952"

1971. Original Avedon print, titled and signed by the artist in 1971. 19-3/4" x 15-3/4". Richard Avedon began his career as a fashion photographer in 1945, and he came to be known as the preeminent contemporary American portrait photographer. This image, of the one-time lovable Little Tramp posing as the Devil on his last day in the U.S., is one of Avedon's most famous, and one of the most famous images of Chaplin. Chaplin, who had long had a taste for teenage girls as his lovers and wives, was hounded by years of persecution for his sexual proclivities and his left-leaning views. In 1944 he was involved in a high-profile scandal when he was indicted on charges involving a young actress he had brought to California and, although he was exonerated on all counts, the negative publicity began a series of events culminating in his voluntary exile from the U.S. eight years later. In addition, the FBI had stepped up its investigations of him as a result of his public statements in support of Russia and Soviet Communism. In 1952, when Chaplin left for England to promote his film "Limelight," the U.S. Attorney General used the opportunity to revoke his re-entry permit -- Chaplin was never an American citizen -- unless he agreed to an even more intensive scrutiny of his private life. Chaplin opted instead to settle in Switzerland with his third wife, Oona O'Neill, the daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill. This was the last image of him in America, a pointed reference to his demonization by the press and the American government. Fine.

HOYO ("EMBRACE") - Rare Signed and Placed Copy of The First Edition - ONLY SIGNED COPY ONLINE

Tokyo, Japan: Shashin Hyoronsha Publishing House, 1971 - 1st Printing. Signed. 96 pages. Published in 1971. Artist Book. One of the greatest erotic art photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. There is no ISBN. The book is now very rare. A brilliant production by Eikoh Hosoe: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Preface by Yukio Mishima, the greatest Japanese novelist of the 20th century. Mishima famously collaborated with Hosoe on "Ba Ra Kei". Cardboard slipcase with titles printed on black paper that is pasted on the slipcase. Printed in gravure on thick uncoated stock paper by The Nissha Printing Company in Tokyo, Japan to absolutely the highest standards. In pink DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents one of the most stunning and influential explorations of the nude in the history of art and photography. Abstracted, choreographed down to the smallest detail, and yet sensuous (made palpably so by the exquisite gravure printing), these nudes will not be surpassed. As the title suggests, every image is an embrace, showing a completely nude and physically intimate male and female couple, whose interest to us is the line formed by the closeness of their bodies, which remain discrete and never become one despite their proximity. They are enacting (if not actually engaged in) sexual intercourse, but Hosoe's goal (and genius) is to make us see and think not about sex but about beauty. The erotic is ultimately an aesthetic, not a sexual, experience. No one can justifiably think of these images as pornographic, which is about arousal. Everyone will see how ravishingly beautiful they are. An absolute "must-have" title for Eikoh Hosoe and erotic art photography book collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and placed in pencil on the half-title page by the artist/photographer: "Eikoh Hosoe Tokyo". This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and placed copy available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 62 gravure plates. "Ba Ra Kei" and "Kamaitachi" were selected as two of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.
