      J. B. Lippincott Company, 1971., 1971. First hardcover edition. Fine, bright copy in a lightly rubbed dust jacket. Published as a paperback original in 1969, this was the second Travis McGee novel to be published in hardcover by Lippincott and preceded the Robert Hale U. K. hardcover edition by one month. A wealthy old man laid up in the hospital is desperate to understand the last months of his daughter's life before she was killed in a car crash in Mexico. It was puzzling. She'd cleaned out her considerable bank account, left Miami and hadn't been heard from again. Travis McGee ventures into the steep hills and strange backwoods of Oaxaca through a bizarre world of dropouts, drug freaks, and kinky rich people--and begins to suspect the beautiful girl's death was no accident. For further details, see the catalog "Art and Technology" by Maurice Tuchman. Edition size is not known, but surviving copies are truly rare.         Nature (Portfolio of 10 Extra-Large Individual Gravure Prints)

Tokyo: Chikuma Shobo, 1971. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Near Fine. This is the complete extra large sized portfolio entitled Hiroshi Hamaya: Nature published by Chikuma Shobo, Tokyo in 1971 that is volume 1 of the Chikuma Photo Gallery series of portfolios of great Japanese photographers. A total of 8 portfolios were issued the others being Kishin Shinoyama, Yoshikazu Shirakawa, Yoichi Midorikawa Taikichi Irie, Yoshihiro Tatsuki, Ikko Narahara, and Eikoh Hosoe. Hiroshi Hamaya is best known for works such as Yukiguni (Snow Country, 1956) and Ura Nihon (Japan\'s Back Coast, 1957), humanist portrayals of the rites and rituals of daily life in rural Japan focusing on the inextricable relationship between people and their natural environment. In 1987, he received the Hasselblad Award. The portfolio is an incredible production that consists of 10 individual mechanically reproduced gravure prints (8 black-and-white and 2 color) measuring 23.5 x 16.5 inches that are contained in a black stiff paper portfolio with printed labels on the front and rear. The prints are housed inside the portfolio in an envelope that includes the prints as well as a title page, biography page, and a blank cardboard insert to protect the prints. The portfolio itself is housed in a protective vinyl envelope. Based on the size of the portfolio and the number of components, there are usually substantial condition issues with the portfolio. The prints are in fantastic condition and the images are fresh and crisp. One of the photographs has a small amount of foxing in the margins not affecting the image. The portfolio case has some minor rubs. The black title sheet in the portfolio has some minor soiling and the inside cardboard of the portfolio case has some print offset. The resealable vinyl protective covering has some sunburning, wrinkling, and tears. Overall, the portfolio is in excellent condition and is considered a superior example of this title that is quite scarce and rarely found complete.

Written on a George Bush Ambassador note card, the letter dated Christmas eve of 1971 reads in full, "Dear Pat, Thanks so very much this fall. Particularly for helping me focus on the important things, and particularly for contributing so much to active, loyal, and dedicated representation of the US of A in the GA (see I'm an integral part of the alphabet soup). It was my selfish pleasure working with you - watching your style and skill with what I hope was unnoticeable jealousy and just plain being with you. Thanks for so much from a grateful heart. A great '72 to you and yours. George Bush."

LA MA MA Presents Company 4 in Andy Warhol's Pork

New York: la Ma Ma, [1971]. Single 8 1/2 x 14" sheet folded once and mimeographed from typescript. The original announcement for the debut performances of Warhol's only play, which would have an outsized effect on the development on glam and punk performance. The program lists all the actors, including Wayne County as Vulva and Harvey Feirstein as Ameila. After this two week debut at La Ma Ma, the play travelled to London, where it received wider acclaim, and members of the crew went on to work for David Bowie's production company. While ephemera from the London performances is known, this is the first example we've seen of a program for the original run of the show. Folded twice with additional heavy creasing, and some toning to margins, else very good.

Long-billed Curlew. From "The Birds of America" (Amsterdam Edition)

Johnson Reprint Corporation and Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Amsterdam and New York 1971 - In October 1971, employing the most faithful printing method available, the best materials and the ablest craftsmen of their age, the Amsterdam firm of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd., in conjunction with the Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York, set out to produce the finest possible limited edition facsimile of the greatest bird book ever printed: the Havell edition of John James Audubon's well-loved "Birds of America". The Curators of the Teyler's Museum in Haarlem, Holland made their copy of the original work available for use as a model. The Museum, founded in 1778, bought their copy through Audubon's son as part of the original subscription in 1839. After long deliberation, the extremely complex but highly accurate process of colour photo-lithography was chosen as the appropriate printing method. The best exponents of this art were the renowned Dutch printing firm of NV Fotolitho Inrichting Drommel at Zandvoort who were willing to undertake the task of printing each plate in up to eight different colours. The original Havell edition was published on hand-made rag paper and the publishers were determined that the paper of their edition should match the original. Unhappy with the commercially available papers, they turned to the traditional paper manufacturers G. Schut & Zonen (founded in 1625), who, using 100% unbleached cotton rags, were able to produce a wove paper of the highest quality, with each sheet bearing a watermark unique to the edition: G. Schut & Zonen [JR monogram] Audubon [OT monogram]. The publishers and their dedicated team completed their task late in 1972 and the results of these labours were affectionately known as the "Amsterdam Audubon." 250 copies were published and sold by subscription, with the plates available bound or unbound. Given all this careful preparation, it is not surprising that the prints have the look and feel of the original Havell edition. John James Audubon was born in Les Cayes, Haiti on 26 April 1785. From 1788 to 1803 he lived in France until he was sent to the United States to manage an estate that his father had bought in Pennsylvania. He returned to France in 1805, but his fascination with the United States had taken root and he returned again in May 1806. He married Lucy Bakewell in 1808 and together they embarked on a difficult period financially that was only to be resolved, through Audubon's unshakable and justified belief in his own abilities, with the publication of his masterpiece in 1827-1838. "The Birds of America" is the single greatest ornithological work ever produced and is the realization of Audubon's dream of traveling throughout the United States recording, natural size, every native bird then known. The 435 double-elephant folio sized plates, printed by the Havells of London, depict some 1,065 different species, the majority drawn from specimens that Audubon himself had captured. The Havell edition was expensive at the time of publication and this has not changed. Possibly the last complete copy which will ever appear on the market sold for a staggering $8,802,500 in a sale in New York in March 2000. Currently, the increasingly rare individual plates from this edition, when they do appear, generally sell for between $5,000 and $175,000 depending on the image. The quality of the Amsterdam Audubon plates is apparent to any discerning collector and it is becoming ever clearer that they offer the most attractive alternative to the Havell edition plates, given the latter's spiraling prices. Kerouac called his friend Robert Frank an artist who \"sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world.\" \"One of the key figures in postwar American art-the \'Manet of the new photography,\'\" Frank was once asked to describe his response to The Lines of My Hand, his unorthodox autobiography. \"You look at the road you\'ve been on,\" he said, \"and it comes back instantly\" (New York Times).
