      Shueisha, Tokyo 1971 - A super fine copy of the re-edited (`shinshuban`, `re-invented`) edition of the famous first edition of `Ordeal by Roses` by iconic 60s Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe. Lavishly designed by the famous Japanese designer Yokonori Tadao. Includes original white slipcase, with the title and publishing information debossed in red, and the original cardboard shipping case, with large title plate. Very minor marks on the white slipcase and wear (and the remains of a sticker) to the shipping case, as to be expected. All five interior faces of the slipcase have large coloured pictorial pastedowns depicting Hindu goddesses and Mishima Yukio. The book itself is in a black velvet binding with a tipped-in coloured plate on the upper board. One metal tipped-in plate on a prelim. Cameraman Dusty Miller's working copy, with his notations throughout. Variously INSCRIBED in round-robin fashion on the title page by director Mike Hodges ("Thank you for coming to my funeral"), cast members Lizabeth Scott, Amerigo Tot, Patrick Browning [Downing], Mickey Rooney, and others. Included is a call sheet and a set of 5 color Polaroid snapshots showing the setups for a funeral sequence in the film. A film every bit the equal of its counterpart, "Get Carter," made by Hodges and Caine the year before, but different in almost every way. Caine effortlessly switches gears from the vigilante killer in "Carter" to a pulp novelist who travels abroad and wanders into a complex murder scenario, unwittingly becoming a part of the puzzle. Grim, funny, and not for the dim. Red studio wrappers. Title page present, with credits for screenwriter/director Hodges and producer Michael Klinger, dated November 17, 1971. 113 leaves, mimeograph. Pages Very Good plus, with silverfish damage to a few leaves, wrapper Very Good plus, with faint dampstaining to the rear wrapper, and a few light creases, bound with two silver brads.

        Multiple Exposure

      Rhode Island School of Design, 1971, Book Condition: Near Fine Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, First Edition. CALLAHAN, HARRY, and his students, Fifth Annual Portfolio of the Photographic Education Society, Providence: Rhode Island School of Design, 1971. 27 prints including Callahan's 1967 photo Multiple Exposure/Providence, gelatin silver measuring about 7.25x4.75 inches or 18x12cm, mounted on heavy white card stock measuring 14x11 inches, in its original brown clamshell box, together with 26 photos by Callahan's students, some of whom went on to become collected photographers in their own right (Paul Krot, Henry Horenstein, Robert Richfield). Callahan was director of the photo department at RISD from 1961 through 1976 and as such was one of the leading art photography educators in the 20th century, as evidenced by the brilliant work of his students displayed here. The photos are various sizes, all mounted. The Multiple Exposure photo here was featured in the Museum of Modern Art's 1976-77 Callahan exhibition (see John Szarkowski's "Callahan," p. 145 (Aperture, 1976). Condition of this folio: The box is dented in front, stained brown along its interior spine, with white stains on the back. The prints and mounts are clean with no scratches or stains, ready for framing; some prints including the Callahan work are slightly fogged in the dark areas, but this fogging is not visible unless the print is viewed at an unnatural angle Special Limited Edition, first issue in this format. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.         Happy Birthday, Wanda June (Archive of photographs and ephemera from a short-lived 1970 stage production)

      New York: Theatre de Lys / Edison Theatre, 1971. Archive of ten photographs, two programs, and an early mimeograph summary of performances for a little-seen production of Kurt Vonnegut's play, "Happy Birthday, Wanda June," directed by Michael J. Kane. Photographs by Bert Andrews, with his stamp on the verso of each, along with holograph ink notations regarding the actors in the shots, including Marsha Mason, Kevin McCarthy, Keith Charles, Bill Hickey, Louis Turenne, Pamela Saunders, Ariane Munker, and Steven Paul. The photographs are from a virtually unrecorded series of 47 performances between October 7, 1970 and November 15, 1970 at the off-Broadway playhouse Theatre de Lys. According to the mimeograph summary accompanying the archive, the play was closed by an Actors Equity Strike. The Theatre de Lys run is unrecorded in IBDB and similar sources, but the play's reopening (again off-Broadway) at the Edison Theatre on December 22, 1970, running 96 performances through March 14, 1971, is widely noted. The programs in this archive represent the performances at Theatre de Lys, and a small run at the Fireside Theatre in Garden City, NY, in November 1971. Before this incarnation, there was another. Vonnegut first wrote the play under the title "Penelope" in the spring of 1952, the same year the author would publish his first novel, making it essentially his first work to see the light of day. "The play had an unremarkable debut at the Orleans Arena Theatre in Cape Cod, where it closed after one week. In a letter to Knox Burger just prior to the run, Vonnegut described the short stories he was working on as "cruel little bastards ... I hate them" and went on to say, "I sure do like plays. If 'Penelope' goes over, I will have taken the giant step that will free me to write plays for the rest of my life." All material Near Fine, with a small repair to one corner of one photograph.

Nummer 17 / 50 Exemplaren der bearbeiteten Vorzugsausgabe mit einem von Dieter Roth entworfenen Multiple (Eine von vier Variationen). Als Umschlag für Band 5 der Gesammelten Werke verwendete Roth einen schwarzen Kunstledereinband mit floraler Goldprägung, dessen Innenseiten er mit türkis bemaltem Leinen überspannte und mit zwei Matern beklebte. Diese sind unter den Motiven nummeriert, monogrammiert und datiert 71. Entgegen der im Kollophon genannten 200 und im Werkverzeichnis notierten 100 Exemplare der Vorzugsausgabe ist diese nur mit 50 Exemplaren bezeichnet. Es ergibt sich offenbar aus den vier Variationen eine Gesamtauflage von 200 zu jeweils 50 (?). Bok 3a ist eine Rekonstruktion des 1961 wohl nur in 50 Exemplaren hergestellten Buches, hier als Band 5 der Gesammelten Werke. Enthält ca. 350 Blattausschnitte aus isländischen Tageszeitzungen. [Vgl. The condition of this piece has been graded as B: Very Good Condition, with signs of handling or age. Here is some supplemental information about the Lithograph: Signed and Dated in Pencil by Marc Chagall. Poster printed on the occasion of a tribute to Luis Aragon, for an exhibition at the Museum of modern Art of Ceret. Published by the Museum of Ceret ref. no. 130 in ‘Chagall's Posters - A Cataloque Raisonne', Sorlier. According to Cogniat, in all Chagall's work during all stages of his life, it was his colors which attracted and captured the viewer's attention. During his earlier years his range was limited by his emphasis on form and his pictures never gave the impression of painted drawings. He adds, "The colors are a living, integral part of the picture and are never passively flat, or banal like an afterthought. They sculpt and animate the volume of the shapes. they indulge in flights of fancy and invention which add new perspectives and graduated, blended tones. His colors do not even attempt to imitate nature but rather to suggest movements, planes and rhythms."He was able to convey striking images using only two or three colors. Cogniat writes, "Chagall is unrivalled in this ability to give a vivid impression of explosive movement with the simplest use of colors."         The Paper Chase (Uncorrected Proof)

      Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1971 - An "Advance Uncorrected Proof" copy in blue paper wraps with a Hougton Mifflin label tipped on the front cover with the expected publication details. Additional notes in pencil and pen that appear to have been made by someone on the editorial staff. A Near Fine copy of the book with a small crease on the front corner and wraps slightly toned, otherwise in excellent condition. Pages numbered 1 - 165 (trade edition ends on page 181), with variations in layout and preliminary pages, and possibly other changes too. In the third year of Harvard Law School, John Jay Osborn, Jr. crafted this novel based on his own experiences within the pressured environment of Harvard Law. The main character, Hart, is an aspiring lawyer from Minnesota who becomes obsessed with the work of his professor, Charles W. Kingsfield. Not only is the book good, but as The New York Times noted, "the astonishing thing is that he was able to do it at all." "The Paper Chase" later inspired an eponymous television series and film, which garnered an Oscar for John Houseman's performance as the inimitable (though often attempted) Professor Kingsfield.         Le Regard du Sourd [Deafman Glance] (Original poster for the 1971 silent opera)

      Paris, 1971. Original poster for the 1971 play directed by Robert Wilson. Lauded for its surreal nature and unusual structure, "Deafman Glance" is a play entirely without words, during which a woman first completes household tasks and then methodically murders two young boys while a deaf third child looks on. Known for his deep concern for the use of movement and language in his work, this piece, a wordless adaptation of Heiner Müller's play "Quartet," is characteristic of Wilson's explicit attention to detail. "Le Regard du Sourd" was an early silent opera created in collaboration with Raymond Andrews, a talented deaf-mute boy whom Wilson had adopted, and was the third major production by Wilson after the formation of his first working group, The Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds, in lower Manhattan. After the Paris premiere of the work, French surrealist Louis Aragon wrote of Wilson, "he is what we, from whom Surrealism was born, dreamed would come after us and go beyond us." 22.5 x 15 inches, rolled.         Brown Pelican. From "The Birds of America" (Amsterdam Edition)

      Amsterdam and New York: Johnson Reprint Corporation and Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1971. Colour-printed lithograph, on fine hand-made paper. Excellent condition. In October 1971, employing the most faithful printing method available, the best materials and the ablest craftsmen of their age, the Amsterdam firm of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd., in conjunction with the Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York, set out to produce the finest possible limited edition facsimile of the greatest bird book ever printed: the Havell edition of John James Audubon's well-loved "Birds of America". The Curators of the Teyler's Museum in Haarlem, Holland made their copy of the original work available for use as a model. The Museum, founded in 1778, bought their copy through Audubon's son as part of the original subscription in 1839. After long deliberation, the extremely complex but highly accurate process of colour photo-lithography was chosen as the appropriate printing method. The best exponents of this art were the renowned Dutch printing firm of NV Fotolitho Inrichting Drommel at Zandvoort who were willing to undertake the task of printing each plate in up to eight different colours. The original Havell edition was published on hand-made rag paper and the publishers were determined that the paper of their edition should match the original. Unhappy with the commercially available papers, they turned to the traditional paper manufacturers G. Schut & Zonen (founded in 1625), who, using 100% unbleached cotton rags, were able to produce a wove paper of the highest quality, with each sheet bearing a watermark unique to the edition: G. Schut & Zonen [JR monogram] Audubon [OT monogram]. The publishers and their dedicated team completed their task late in 1972 and the results of these labours were affectionately known as the "Amsterdam Audubon." 250 copies were published and sold by subscription, with the plates available bound or unbound. Given all this careful preparation, it is not surprising that the prints have the look and feel of the original Havell edition. John James Audubon was born in Les Cayes, Haiti on 26 April 1785. From 1788 to 1803 he lived in France until he was sent to the United States to manage an estate that his father had bought in Pennsylvania. He returned to France in 1805, but his fascination with the United States had taken root and he returned again in May 1806. He married Lucy Bakewell in 1808 and together they embarked on a difficult period financially that was only to be resolved, through Audubon's unshakable and justified belief in his own abilities, with the publication of his masterpiece in 1827-1838. "The Birds of America" is the single greatest ornithological work ever produced and is the realization of Audubon's dream of traveling throughout the United States recording, natural size, every native bird then known. The 435 double-elephant folio sized plates, printed by the Havells of London, depict some 1,065 different species, the majority drawn from specimens that Audubon himself had captured. The Havell edition was expensive at the time of publication and this has not changed. Possibly the last complete copy which will ever appear on the market sold for a staggering $8,802,500 in a sale in New York in March 2000. Currently, the increasingly rare individual plates from this edition, when they do appear, generally sell for between $5,000 and $175,000 depending on the image. The quality of the Amsterdam Audubon plates is apparent to any discerning collector and it is becoming ever clearer that they offer the most attractive alternative to the Havell edition plates, given the latter's spiraling prices. Light crease to upper outer corner of wrapper front panel, faint spotting to fore edge and front free endpaper. A very good copy. First edition, wrappered issue. Inscribed by the author on the title-page: "This Copy is for Dink. 'Again: thank you.' Richard Brautigan, April 13, 1974, Key West". The recipient was Benjamin "Dink" Bruce, son of Telly Otto "Toby" Bruce, a "jack-of-all-trades" from Piggott, Arkansas, who moved to Key West in 1935 at the behest of Ernest Hemingway. The two had met seven years earlier during Hemingway's first visit to Piggott, where the family of his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer were "lords of the realm" (McIver, Hemingway's Key West, p. 54). For the next thirty years Toby more or less served as his fixer, performing the duties of chauffeur, secretary, and proofreader, and notably designing the dust jacket of For Whom the Bells Toll. Owing partly to his Hemingway connection, Dink (a nickname reputedly given to him by the author), became a cult figure in his own right: "Bruce seemed to cross paths with every celebrity who came through Key West. He didn't seek them out; they found him. In Key West, Dink Bruce was royalty" (McKeen, Mile Marker Zero: The Moveable Feast of Key West, p. 90). Among these was Brautigan, whom he at first found to be "sort of subdued" in the tropical heat, though eventually warmed to him "when he offered to assist in repairing a used Saks Fifth Avenue panel delivery truck Bruce had converted into a camper" (Hjortsberg, Jubilee Hitchhiker: The Life and Times of Richard Brautigan, p. 454).

        THX-1138 (Original oversize double weight candid photograph from the 1971 film)

      San Francisco: American Zoetrope Warner Brothers, 1971. Vintage black-and-white oversize double weight still photograph from the 1971 film. Shown are George Lucas and an assistant setting up a shot of Robert DuVall, with Lucas placing calipers on DuVall's head. With the Warner Brothers studio stamp on the verso, along with a notation regarding the shot and its reference number. Given everything that would follow, "THX-1138" could easily be described as the most successful student film of all time, developed by Lucas in 1967 as a short called "Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB" while he was attending the University of Southern California's film school. The feature film version was one of the first efforts produced under the auspices of Lucas' friend, Francis Ford Coppola. Written by Lucas and Walter Murch, the film set a standard for dystopian stories that would inform dozens of films in its wake. Oddly, Lucas did not continue down the pessimistic path, choosing instead to engage in the broader appeal of "Star Wars." 14 x 10.25 inches (36 x 26 cm). Near Fine.       Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1971. First edition. Near Fine. An "Advance Uncorrected Proof" copy in blue paper wraps with a Hougton Mifflin label tipped on the front cover with the expected publication details. Additional notes in pencil and pen that appear to have been made by someone on the editorial staff. A Near Fine copy of the book with a small crease on the front corner and wraps slightly toned, otherwise in excellent condition. Pages numbered 1 - 165 (trade edition ends on page 181), with variations in layout and preliminary pages, and possibly other changes too. In the third year of Harvard Law School, John Jay Osborn, Jr. crafted this novel based on his own experiences within the pressured environment of Harvard Law. The main character, Hart, is an aspiring lawyer from Minnesota who becomes obsessed with the work of his professor, Charles W. Kingsfield. Not only is the book good, but as The New York Times noted, "the astonishing thing is that he was able to do it at all." "The Paper Chase" later inspired an eponymous television series and film, which garnered an Oscar for John Houseman's performance as the inimitable (though often attempted) Professor Kingsfield. A lovely advance copy of this science fiction highspot, winner of the Hugo Award in 1972.

There is a slight circular indentation on the last blank leaf to the book, the odd brown fox mark, otherwise a very good copy.
