Original Miles Davis Concert Poster, Berlin, 1971.

Berlin: , 1971. Berlin Jazz Tage, Germany, Nov. 4-7, 1971. A0 format (1168 mm by 838 mm) vintage off-set lithographic poster. Design by Kieser, photography credit to Volker Hartmann. A touch of wear and several tiny closed tears to upper left and right margins, else about fine, bright, crisp and, very uncommon for a poster of this size, it has never been folded. This powerful portrait of Miles Davis was designed exclusively for the Berlin Jazz Festival of 1971, an extraordinary international gathering of the era's jazz luminaries, at which Miles' new band, featuring Keith Jarrett, Gary Bartz and Don Alias, was one of the headliners. Kieser's design draws heavily on the psychedelic influences which he had been employing in his rock posters of the late 1960's, and the portrait of Miles is considered to be one of his signature pieces in this genre. This image also featured strongly in the jubilee celebrations of the Berliner Festspiele, festival production manager Ihno von Hasselt describing the Jazzfest posters, for which Kieser was solely responsible up to 2000, as "street fighters. Hermetic depictions of signs which erected an entire defence system against the surrounding world of emblazoned dullness, sloppy inflated advertising and meaningless graphic design." Gunther Kieser is one of Germany's pre-eminent poster artists whose work can be found in the collections of major museums including the Tokyo Museum, the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art. He has had a prolific and varied career, during which his technically innovative, provocative and brilliant designs have kept him in the forefront of European poster art. Kieser is perhaps best known for his jazz and rock concert posters, and particularly for the work he did for the German concert producers Lippman & Rau from the 50s to the 80s, and for whom he effectively acted as in-house designer. A significant jazz poster by an important designer, and extremely uncommon, particularly in such sharp condition.

        Biserka Gall.

Couverture-coffret : bon. Couverture souple : très bon. Intérieur et planches : très bon. 40.5 x 30 cm 1490g. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream

New York: Random House, 1971 Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth spine over dark gray boards, Steadman's Raoul Duke illustration to the front cover in blind, spine lettered in metallic silver; original pictorial dust jacket designed by Susan Schwaab, with Steadman's illustration of Duke and Dr. Gonzo driving through the desert, lettered in blue, red, and black. About fine, with a hint of faint toning to the top edge of the front board; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of faint toning to the top edge of the front panel, else fine. A beautiful copy. Originally published in Rolling Stone, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the author's best known "failed but essentially noble experiment in Gonzo journalism," a literary genre that subjectively blends truth and fiction. The novel tells of the protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo as they travel on a drug-fueled, wild adventure "into the heart of the American Dream." The plot is loosely based on the author's actual adventures with American attorney and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta and is supplemented with Thompson's reflections on the 1960's counterculture movement. Ralph Steadman's iconic and grotesquely beautiful illustrations animate Thompson's bizarre journey, assisting the reader in picturing the novel's absurd events. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was adapted into a popular film of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, in 1998.. Illus. by Steadman, Ralph. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Archive of Old Post Office Theatre Posters

East Hampton, New York. [circa 1971]. First. Broadsides. Illustrated by Isadore Seltzer. Measuring 11" x 17" and 13" x 19.75". Overall very good with some toning, pins holes at the corners, and light edge wear; one poster with a couple of water spots. Eight posters for performances at the Old Post Office Theatre on Newtown Lane in East Hampton, New York, which was co-owned by photographer Ken Robbins who used the upstairs as his first dark room. The theatre specialized in avant-garde plays by the likes of Harold Pinter, Terrance McNally, Sam Shepard, Eugene Ionesco, Joe Orton, Rochelle Owens, Boris Vian, Leonard Melfi, and others. Drama apparently did not pay the bills so the theatre put the kibosh on live performance after just two seasons in favor of art house films. It was likely that few of these posters were made for each performances and even less have survived. .

Alan J. Pakula, Donald Sutherland, and Jane Fonda on the set of "Klute" (1971)

N.p.: N.p., 1971. Vintage oversize double weight candid photograph of Alan J. Pakula, Donald Sutherland, and Jane Fonda on the set of "Klute" in the summer of 1970. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. The photographer has written at the top of the verso, in holograph ink: "Donald Sutherland, Alan Pakula, and Jane Fonda." With Willoughby's ASMP stamp (Pacific Palisades address) and reference number. Full provenance available. A seminal and substantially understated neo-noir, one of the great films of New Hollywood cinema in the early 1970s. Set in New York City and filmed on location there. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 13.5 x 9.25 inches. Near Fine. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, pp. 195-196. Silver, pp. 411-412. Spicer, pp. 431.
