P.G. Wodehouse Letter (with Signed Pictorial Postcard)

Remsenburg (Long Island), NY, 1971. November 26, 1971 letter from P.G. Wodehouse thanking a Mr. Thomas for keeping him posted on the recent travails of his old college (Dulwich) on the soccer fields. The body of the letter is typed and the last 1/4 hastily written in his hand. The letter is neatly folded into thirds and shows light foxing. The text is bright, clean and eminently readable, as is Wodehouse's full signature and addtional handwriting. Also includes a postcard (a photograph of a relaxed, pipe-smoking Wodehouse with one of his beloved dachsunds), which he has inscribed to the same fellow to whom he wrote the letter.

Chants of Chance [Handwritten book of poetry and lyrics]

Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. A remarkable handwritten book of poetry and lyrics by Baltimore resident JahHannibal Abba-Ra, born Eric James in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Abba-Ra described himself on Twitter as Spiritual Outsider Artist/Musician Cosmic Visionary Shaman of Aether Wisdom / Deconstructive Rhythmitist / Polymetric Anti-Drummer / Pioneer in Non-linear sound. Abba-Ra died in a car crash in May 2012. A friend posted this in a letter to the Baltimore City Paper after his death: "For those of us who knew and loved and respected him this was a great loss. He was a small stocky African-American with a heart like a locomotive or an Art Blakey solo. He moved with a lope the way Coleman Hawkins would sound playing "Body and Soul." He spoke like Ben Webster sounded: rough with tones of love. I met him at a poetry reading hosted by Tom Divinty where he was reading a poem about a friend of mine, the notorious flag desecrator/artist Dred Scott Tyler. The poem was an eloquent incitement of the capitalist system-not the agit-prop I was used to hearing. We became fast friends and involved in support work for the homeless in the area....I remember he was a calm, soft-spoken man who never angered." Abba-Ra was born in the early 1950s and graduated from high school in 1971. He attended college for two years. His impassioned writings in this compilation reveal a complex and engaged man of his time and place. His self-description above from Twitter conveys the scope of his thoughts and concerns. Abba-Ra's writings are of war, power and its mis-use. conflict, opression, history, and much more. Written in black ink, with many pages including some color and small designs. Bound in black leather with top and bottom edges decorated in color and gold flecks. Decorated endpapers in black and gold. Housed in a black cloth box with sides with the same black and gold decorations used on the endpapers. Laid in the box are a poem titled "For Erics Mother," A small piece of paper that lists the works included in this volume, and a photocopy of another poem titled "For Beuys."There is also a 1988 catalog for ras records included. Book is in fine condition and box is lightly worn along edges. 117 numbered pages on verso only. AUTO/082515.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream

New York: Random House, 1971 Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth spine over dark gray boards, Steadman's Raoul Duke illustration to the front cover in blind, spine lettered in metallic silver; original pictorial dust jacket designed by Susan Schwaab, with Steadman's illustration of Duke and Dr. Gonzo driving through the desert, lettered in blue, red, and black. About near fine, with some faint toning to the extremities, a few minor spots to the fore edge, former owner's inscription to the front free endpaper, otherwise fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some faint toning to the spine and panel edges, a hint of minor soiling to the otherwise clean panels. Overall, a bright and fresh copy. Originally published in Rolling Stone, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the author's best known "failed but essentially noble experiment in Gonzo journalism," a literary genre that subjectively blends truth and fiction. The novel tells of the protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo as they travel on a drug-fueled, wild adventure "into the heart of the American Dream." The plot is loosely based on the author's actual adventures with American attorney and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta and is supplemented with Thompson's reflections on the 1960's counterculture movement. Ralph Steadman's iconic and grotesquely beautiful illustrations animate Thompson's bizarre journey, assisting the reader in picturing the novel's absurd events. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was adapted into a popular film of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, in 1998.. Illus. by Steadman, Ralph. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        The World of William Shakespeare

London: Jonathan Cape, 1971., 1971. Signed Limited Edition. Quarto. Bound in full red morocco, with an impression of the Globe Theatre in coloured onlay to front board, red title label and gilt titles to spine; all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Thoroughly illustrated with black and white and colour plates. In original grey cloth clamshell box, with black labels to spine. This is the final copy of the run originally put up for sale, no.250, numbered and signed by Burgess in purple. Binding is tight and shows well. Internally clean and free from spotting. Burgess's earlier novelist treatment of Shakespeare's life, "Nothing Like the Sun", was hailed by Harold Bloom as the most effective biography of Shakespeare, and this purely historical and literary critical work builds on that foundation.

John Wayne and eleven companions on the set of The Cowboys (1971)

N.p.: N.p., 1971. Vintage oversize double weight sepia photograph of John Wayne and eleven young cohorts on the set of "The Cowboys" in 1971. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. The photographer has written at the top of the verso, in holograph ink: "71-011 / The Cowboys." Full provenance available. Shot on location in Colorado (Durango, Canon City, Castle Rock, Pagosa Springs), and New Mexico (Chama, Galisteo, Santa Fe). After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 13.5 x 9.5 inches. Near Fine. Pitt 833.
