        Sunset Canyon [Black Sun]

Talmy, Franklin Limited, London 1971 - 159pp. Octavo [22 cm] Light yellow boards. Fine/Fine. Signed by the author with manuscript corrections. This is a publisher copy and stamped NOT FOR SALE SAMPLE COMPLETE COPY. It has the title "Black Sun" written in ink on the dust jacket and Black Sun also hand written on the title page. The rear flap of the jacket has a paragraph scratched out. Additionally, in an unknown hand, the list of the author's books has been corrected and reordered, with titles published since Black Sun added to the list; including The Monkey Wrench Gang (1975) The Journey Home (1977) Abbey's Road and Good News which would date the corrections/additions to 1979 or 1980. All of the above corrections are in an unknown hand, presumably the publisher's. The copy in question has then been sent to the author who has signed the book "Abbey" on the front free endsheet and additionally block printed his name Abbey on the bottom of the text block. The copyright page of the book has additional information handwritten in the Abbey's distinctive scrawl concerning the publishing history of the book, and also crediting a quotation from Robert Creeley that appears on page 133. Two red lines in the author's red pen appear on Page 158. This copy appears to have been marked up by both publisher and author for a new edition; perhaps the Capra Press edition of Black Sun that was published in the early 80s? Nonetheless, a unique copy with manuscript annotations by both author and publisher. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Herkunft: Jeweils Datierung aufgrund des Wasserzeichenbefundes. Lokalisierung nach der Schreibsprache. Wegener. Menschen ohne maske (Men without masks) ****** An extraordinary presentation example, the first printed and bound ******

Verlag C.J. Bucher, Lucerne and Frankfurt, German, the true first edition 1971 - OFFERING: An extraordinary presentation example, the first printed and bound, (and no limited edition was issued), documented by Gunther Sander, son of August Sander in his full-page homage to Stefan Lorant, the historically important photojournalist, who was among the first to publish some of August Sander's photographs, as editor of the Münchner Illustrierte Presse (1929-1933). The great German photographer August Sander [1876-1964] is remembered for "Menschen Des 20 Jahrhunderts" (People of the 20th Century), a monumental portrait series shot between 1910 and the early 1950s. He was unable to publish the project during his lifetime. This work contains the first substantial selection of photographs reproduced from Sander's surviving print archives, (a large number were destroyed by a bomb in WWII), the selection of 1910-38 portraits made by Gunther who devoted years to organizing and restoring the archives: he also contributes an excellent biographical essay. The gravure reproductions are of excellent quality and the German edition precedes all other editions. The pen & ink presentation is on the first preliminary page, 14 lines in German, signed, dated, and sited. CONDITION: Book: Good / Jacket: Acceptable / Lacks plain card slipcase. / Pages: bright and clean, most with a gentle top corner bend. / Covers: light fading to top and bottom edges, lower side with lightly bumped corners, spine with slight crown and foot wear. / Binding: Very Good / Jacket: all-around edge wear and rubs, a few small vertical tears, slight loss to three tips, spine with irregular 5 mm loss at head, and irregular 2 mm loss at foot. PAGINATION: Complete; 313 pages with 240 fine full-page, b/w gravure reproductions, a tipped-in frontispiece portrait of August Sander, and 24 small photographic reproductions in text. SIZE: 310 mm (12.2 inches). FORMAT: Publisher's gray paper boards and photographic jacket. STEFAN LORANT [1901-1997]: Generally considered the first major editor of modern photojournalism, credited with publishing countless historical images for the first time. Lorant capitalized on the possibilities opened up by use of the new small cameras with high-speed lenses, exemplified by the Leica and became a leader in the creation of the photo essay. He was among the first to employ celebrated photographers as photojournalists including August Sander, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstadt and Andre Kertesz and published the early photographs of Felix Man, Kurt Hutton, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Erich Salomon and Robert Capa. His credo, "the photograph should not be posed; the camera should be like the notebook of a trained reporter." [Whiting] ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.         Collection of 21 Books Owned by Fashion Designer Elsa Schiaparelli

1971 - A group of books from the personal collection of Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1974) one of the world's premiere fashion designers during the '20s and '30s, whose popularity once rivaled Coco Chanel. Schiaparelli pioneered numerous now-iconic fashion staples such as the divided skirt, first worn by tennis player Lili de Alvarez at Wimbledon in 1931; trompe-l'oeil detailing in knitwear; the recasting of fasteners such as zippers, buttons, and hooks as featured fashion elements; the early adoption of synthetic materials such as rayon, acrylic, and cellophane into high fashion; and her incorporation of playful, surrealist design into fashion through collaboration with friends Jean Cocteau, Leonor Fini, and Salvador Dali, with whom she created the Lobster Dress made famous by Wallis Simpson. Her interest in books was likely fostered by her father a renowned Italian scholar and dean of The University of Rome.         Two Essays on the Decretum of Gratian by Hellmut Lehmann-Haupt and Charles Mccurry Together with an Original Leaf Printed on Vellum by Peter Schoeffer at Mainz in 1472 [Leaf Book]

Zeitlin & Ver Brugge - Bernard M. Rosenthall, Inc., Los Angeles & San Francisco - 1971, edition limied to 193 copies. () Fine. [18]. Large folio (19.5" X 13.5"). Quarter vellum over marbled boards with small vellum corners. Vellum spine label with gilt titles and designs. All edges uncut. Endpapers lightly age toned. Bookplate of Arthur A. Goldsmith Jr. To front pastedown. Original vellum leaf contained in paper folder bound before title page. Leaf in fine antiquarian condition with only very minor age toning and a few small wormholes. Several initials and decorations in red and blue. Limited to 193 copies printed at the Platin Press, this being # 66. A lavishly produced leaf book and tribute to Peter Schoeffer, pupil of Johannes Gutenberg and Johann Fust, and early printer at Mainz. Schoeffer, who first printed under Gutenberg and Fust, printed under his own name after Fust's death in 1466. Schoeffer produced at least 254 texts, including the Decretum from which the fine leaf here was taken. The leaf is a masterwork of book design, with the main text occupying two columns in the center of the page and the commentary surrounding in a smaller type. Numerous sections are highlighted in red or blue. Vellum incunables are especially scarce, and this leaf book represents one of the few opportunities to obtain an example, especially an example printed at Mainz by someone so closely associated with the invention of printing with moveable type in the West (Disbound and Dispersed 157) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The story of the famous Ferhad and Shirin. [with] Stories of the secret of Mahfiruz Sultan.Istanbul, the lithographic printing office [Henri Cayol?], 1271 A.H. [= 1854/55]. 4to. A wholly lithographed book from a calligraphic and pen-decorated manuscript written in Turkish in Arabic script, with 8 lithographed pen-drawn illustration plates, and elaborate pen-work decoration on the title-page, the opening of the text and the final page, and smaller decorations scattered through the text. Contemporary boards (spine reinforced with later brown cloth).

Seyfettin Özege, ... Katalogu (1971-1982) (noting only 6 plates); Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft 53 (1899), 10913?; cf. WorldCat 41490099. An extremely rare, wholly lithographed book containing two folk tales, published in Istanbul and written in Turkish in the Arabic script. The main text, with 8 illustrations, tells the ancient story of Ferhad and Shirin. The second story is written in the outside margins of the pages, running parallel to the main story. It is based on more recent Ottoman history but probably does not stick closely to the historical facts. The main character is Mahfiruz Sultan, an Eastern Orthodox Christian slave, consort of the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I and mother of Osman II. She helped put her son on the throne when he was only 14 but he was assassinated four years later. With manuscript note on title-page. The paper is slightly browned but the book is otherwise in good condition. Some quires show damage and repairs to the gutter folds, and the sewing has come loose in one. The spine was apparently damaged and has been reinforced with brown cloth, and the boards show minor damage. An extremely rare early lithographic book from Istanbul, with two Turkish folk tales, the main one with 8 illustrations.
