Late Caprichos of Goya Fragments from a Series Commentary and Notes by Eleanor Sayre.

      - New York: Philip Hofer, 1971. Slim small folio, 46pp. With a frontispiece and 32 illustrations. Original full brown morocco by Arno Werner, the extra suite of plates in a cloth folder, all contained in a quarter brown morocco clamshell box. The second suite of plates are archivally matted and framed. Limited edition, this being number VIII of XXV super de luxe copies, with 2 additional suites of original prints, from an edition limited to 150 copies. This super de luxe edition includes a double suite of the 6 original etchings (12 total) six of which are loose in a blue cloth folding case and 6 of which are beautifully framed. The three double-sided copper plates from which the plates were printed passed from Goya's grandson Mariano to John Savile Lumley, then to Colnaghi, from whom Philip Hofer acquired them in the 1930s. He, in turn, gave them in 1970 to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, after the present edition of 150 sets had been printed by David Godine. No further prints will ever be pulled from these plates. They depict "Warlock", "Witch", two "Majas" and two "Smugglers". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

American Flamingo. From "The Birds of America" (Amsterdam Edition)

Amsterdam and New York: Johnson Reprint Corporation and Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1971. Colour-printed lithograph, on fine hand-made paper. Excellent condition. In October 1971, employing the most faithful printing method available, the best materials and the ablest craftsmen of their age, the Amsterdam firm of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd., in conjunction with the Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York, set out to produce the finest possible limited edition facsimile of the greatest bird book ever printed: the Havell edition of John James Audubon's well-loved "Birds of America". The Curators of the Teyler's Museum in Haarlem, Holland made their copy of the original work available for use as a model. The Museum, founded in 1778, bought their copy through Audubon's son as part of the original subscription in 1839. After long deliberation, the extremely complex but highly accurate process of colour photo-lithography was chosen as the appropriate printing method. The best exponents of this art were the renowned Dutch printing firm of NV Fotolitho Inrichting Drommel at Zandvoort who were willing to undertake the task of printing each plate in up to eight different colours. The original Havell edition was published on hand-made rag paper and the publishers were determined that the paper of their edition should match the original. Unhappy with the commercially available papers, they turned to the traditional paper manufacturers G. Schut & Zonen (founded in 1625), who, using 100% unbleached cotton rags, were able to produce a wove paper of the highest quality, with each sheet bearing a watermark unique to the edition: G. Schut & Zonen [JR monogram] Audubon [OT monogram]. The publishers and their dedicated team completed their task late in 1972 and the results of these labours were affectionately known as the "Amsterdam Audubon." 250 copies were published and sold by subscription, with the plates available bound or unbound. Given all this careful preparation, it is not surprising that the prints have the look and feel of the original Havell edition. John James Audubon was born in Les Cayes, Haiti on 26 April 1785. From 1788 to 1803 he lived in France until he was sent to the United States to manage an estate that his father had bought in Pennsylvania. He returned to France in 1805, but his fascination with the United States had taken root and he returned again in May 1806. He married Lucy Bakewell in 1808 and together they embarked on a difficult period financially that was only to be resolved, through Audubon's unshakable and justified belief in his own abilities, with the publication of his masterpiece in 1827-1838. "The Birds of America" is the single greatest ornithological work ever produced and is the realization of Audubon's dream of traveling throughout the United States recording, natural size, every native bird then known. The 435 double-elephant folio sized plates, printed by the Havells of London, depict some 1,065 different species, the majority drawn from specimens that Audubon himself had captured. The Havell edition was expensive at the time of publication and this has not changed. Possibly the last complete copy which will ever appear on the market sold for a staggering $8,802,500 in a sale in New York in March 2000. Currently, the increasingly rare individual plates from this edition, when they do appear, generally sell for between $5,000 and $175,000 depending on the image. The quality of the Amsterdam Audubon plates is apparent to any discerning collector and it is becoming ever clearer that they offer the most attractive alternative to the Havell edition plates, given the latter's spiraling prices.         [Costume illustration for] The government inspector by Nikolay Gogol.

[U.S.] (27 cm, 10.65"). 24 col. illus.. ca. 1971 A remarkable album: 24 panels of hand-inked and painted costume designs for a production of Gogol's Government Inspector (a.k.a. The Inspector General, originally Revizor). These delightful designs, slightly reminiscent in style of Jean de Brunhoff's illustrations, convey a great deal of personality; each panel's character is shown in a different pose — including those characters given more than one costume — with a range of expressions portrayed throughout. The images were painted on heavy panels bound together with cloth tape => leporello- or accordion-style, with the entire sequence unfolding as one very long, very impressive strip ABOUT 20 FEET LONG. Following Anne Gregory's name on the cover here is the designation, "'71," but its significance has not been established. There was a premiere of Zador's revised operatic version of The Government Inspector at El Camino College in that year, and these do look like they could be operatic costumes; so perhaps the date refers to that production — or, perhaps "Anne Gregory" was to graduate from that institution or another, that year. As above, cover panels with small smudges, interior panels clean and bright. => A unique and extensive work of art, offering literary, theatrical, and costuming interest in addition to its aesthetic pleasures.

Two Homemade Photo Albums]: E 6th St [and] The Grossman's East Chatham Building Book

New York 1971 - Two tall octavo volumes. Unpaged. A few images loose or detached but all are present, very good or better. Homemade photo albums and journals made by Jill Grossman for her husband the noted publisher Richard Grossman. *The Grossman's East Chatham Building Book* (133 photographs, various sizes, both black and white and color, many captioned, hand-drawn map) photographically records and captions the construction of the Grossman's New York State House in East Chatham between 1968-1969, and is presented and dedicated to Richard by Jill in 1971. It shows the couple building the house: framing, raising walls, roofing, painting, gardening, gathering firewood, smoking pot, and generally living an idyllic country life. *E 6th St* (handpainted boards with applied handwritten title. 41 photographs, various sizes, both black and white and color, mostly uncaptioned, applied title page elements) is dated in 1970 (probably completed in 1971, as the final picture is dated on Christmas in 1970), shows a few images of their apartment but mostly concerns itself with scenes from New York's then-gritty streets, including images of the Fillmore East marquee, storefronts, a wall with layers of stripped posters, graffiti, posters advertising Bella Abzug's Congressional Campaign, and street characters. Richard Grossman made his living and his fame as a small publisher, publishing books such as Ralph Nadar's *Unsafe At Any Speed* and Helen Hanff's *84 Charing Cross Road*. The creator of the books, Jill Kneerim, was Grossman's second wife (later divorced) and is a respected literary agent. These charming handmade books capturing a brief but interesting moment in time in the life of the liberal New York publisher. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Archive of Old Post Office Theatre Posters

East Hampton, New York 1971 - Broadsides. Illustrated by Isadore Seltzer. Measuring 11" x 17" and 13" x 19.75". Overall very good with some toning, pins holes at the corners, and light edge wear; one poster with a couple of water spots. Eight posters for performances at the Old Post Office Theatre on Newtown Lane in East Hampton, New York, which was co-owned by photographer Ken Robbins who used the upstairs as his first dark room. The theatre specialized in avant-garde plays by the likes of Harold Pinter, Terrance McNally, Sam Shepard, Eugene Ionesco, Joe Orton, Rochelle Owens, Boris Vian, Leonard Melfi, and others. Drama apparently did not pay the bills so the theatre put the kibosh on live performance after just two seasons in favor of art house films. It was likely that few of these posters were made for each performances and even less have survived. [Attributes: First Edition]
