ORIGINAL SUPER 8 FILM, SHOT BY JIM MORRISON

[1971]. An original Super 8 film, shot by Jim Morrison of his girlfriend, Pamela Courson, in a cemetery in Corsica. Filmed using his Braun Nizo S56 Super 8 Camera during a ten day holiday in May 1971. Archivally preserved, with the original spool retained. The film is 2 minutes and 37 seconds long and has never been shown publicly. It is referenced specifically in Patricia Butler?s book Angels Dance and Angels Die: The Tragic Romance of Pamela and Jim Morrison: ?The scene cuts to Pamela, slowly walking between an aisle of gravestones. Her head is bowed, and her long red hair shields her face from view for a moment, before she slowly looks up to stare pensively into the camera. A moment later, an extreme close-up of her face, again slightly out of focus, shows Pamela pouting in the direction of Jim, who is operating the camera. It is easy to make out the words she speaks as she tells him, ?I don?t want to move?. So the camera pans away from the uncooperative subject, who changes her mind suddenly and runs back into the camera range, reclaiming the scene by dancing wildly among the gravestones, her hair flashing about her like a flaming banner. All at once, Pamela disappears behind a mausoleum, but Jim anticipates her moves and the camera catches her reappearance, running from behind the marble monument and continuing her wild dance.? On the last night of his life, as recorded in 'The Last Days Of Jim Morrison: A rare look into the rock god's journals' in Rolling Stone magazine, 'Jim started threading Super-8 films of their travels in the projector. Pamela said they sang together as they watched their dark, jerky, out-of-focus movies of Spain, Morocco and Corsica on the wall. Jim (according to Pamela in all her narratives) played old Doors records- even 'The End'- far into the night'. Whilst Morrison is known to have shot home movies with this camera regularly, this would appear to be the only one to have surfaced in the 42 years since his death.         Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey into the Heart of the American Dream

New York: Random House, 1971 Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth spine over dark gray boards, Steadman's Raoul Duke illustration to the front cover in blind, spine lettered in metallic silver; original pictorial dust jacket designed by Susan Schwaab, with Steadman's illustration of Duke and Dr. Gonzo driving through the desert, lettered in blue, red, and black. Near fine, with only a hint of faint toning to the board edges, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of toning and minor creasing to the extremities, else fine. A tight copy. Originally published in Rolling Stone, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the author's best known "failed but essentially noble experiment in Gonzo journalism," a literary genre that subjectively blends truth and fiction. The novel tells of the protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo as they travel on a drug-fueled, wild adventure "into the heart of the American Dream." The plot is loosely based on the author's actual adventures with American attorney and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta and is supplemented with Thompson's reflections on the 1960's counterculture movement. Ralph Steadman's iconic and grotesquely beautiful illustrations animate Thompson's bizarre journey, assisting the reader in picturing the novel's absurd events. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was adapted into a popular film of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, in 1998.. Illus. by Steadman, Ralph. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph. Promotional Poster

Millerton, NY: Aperture. FIRST EDITION. none. Fine. EXTREMELY SCARCE PROMOTIONAL POSTER for the first edition of Diane Arbus's classic collection of photographs. Following Arbus's suicide in 1971, the curator of MOMA, John Szarkowski, began work on staging a major retrospective of Arbus's work. At first there was little interest in the project and the proposal for the accompanying catalog was rejected by every major publishing house before Aperture magazine's Michael E. Hoffman agreed to print the book. The resulting MOMA retrospective was a huge success, traveling throughout North America and attended by over seven million people; the corresponding book, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph, has since become one of the most influential photography books ever produced, cementing Arbus's reputation as one of the most original and expressive photographers of her time. Roth 101. The promotional poster shows the cover image of the twins, perhaps Arbus's most iconic photograph. Millerton, New York: Aperture, 1972. Poster (approx. 24x18 in.). In fine condition. RARE.

        The Hombre from Sonora

Lenox Hill Press, New York 1971 - Publisher's full red cloth with bright black lettering on the front board and spine; this hardcover binding is clean and solid with a slight cock to the spine and light wear to the board corners. This is a lightly ex-library copy with most of the indicators confined to the front pastedown. The endpapers and text are clean and unmarked, although the lower corners of two pages appear to have been stuck together at one point; their separation has effected a few letters of text, but it's quite minor. The dustjacket remains unclipped ($3.95) and is bright, attractive, and whole with only light sunning to the spine and a small chip missing from the upper spine end; presents well under fresh archival mylar. A nice copy in attractive jacket, less marred than usually found, of Willeford's existential Western, infused with his black humor and musings on the immobilized man. 192pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        IMPROVISED POETICS - SIGNED

Buffalo: The Anonym Press, 1971. First Edition. First (proof) state, one of 1,000 copies. Slim octavo (16.75cm); photo-illustrated wrappers, stapled; [4], 51, [1]pp. Signed on the title page: "Allen Ginsberg / 11/20/86 / AH / Detroit." Wrappers detached and worn but present, spine perished; text is damp-waved and edgeworn but perfectly legible; staples oxidized; Fair to Good, complete copy. With the original ticket stub from "An Evening with Allen Ginsberg" from November 20, 1986 laid in. A key work by the Beat Generation poet, ranking with Kerouac's essentials of spontaneous prose, Burroughs's cut-up method, Corso's automaticism, McClure's beast language, and Ferlinghetti's voice of the fourth person singular. The book has carried a lore since publication: printed in a modest edition of 1,000 copies in July, 1971, but not published, Ginsberg was said to have been displeased both with the design and number of errors in the text. Morgan's bibliography, suitably ambiguous, states that the edition "was destroyed by the publisher and changes made to the text and cover. Many copies still exist, but it is not known how many have survived, although more than ten have been examined by the compiler" (p.32). A legend (relayed to us through the trade, from the original owner), has it that the proof edition was dumped into Lake Erie but rescued by an enterprising fan, who used a rake to salvage a number of them from the water. The earliest (and only) printed reference we have found substantiates this claim: "Allen Ginsberg's Improvised Poetics is probably the best book ever salvaged from Lake Erie. Dumped in the Great Lake after a disastrous first printing, the book has been resurrected and reissued by Anonym Press (MacKay, Bill (ed.) The Poetry Project Newsletter, 1 Nov.1973, p.2). Of the handful of copies of the proof state we have seen, all but one were similarly damp-stained, most lacking their wrappers. Morgan calls for 100 numbered and signed copies from the run, though none we have seen were issued numbered or signed. A second, corrected edition of 2,000 copies was released by Anonym in 1972. The present copy was signed at a Detroit event in 1986; the owner relays that at first, Ginsberg refused to sign this copy, having disavowed the book, but finally relented for the sake of their friendship. A scarce survival; OCLC finds sparse holdings in 16 institutions. Provenance: ex-Ken Mikolowski, Detroit poet, editor, and founder of the Alternative Press. Morgan A22.a1
