President Nixon thanks publisher James Copley for his “continuing support and encouragement” for “this Administration’s determination to meet our international commitments as we continue to seek a just and lasting peace” in Vietnam

Washington, March 8, 1971. 6.75" x 8.75". "Typed Letter Signed “RN” as President, 1p, 6.75” x 8.75”. On pale green White House stationery, blind embossed presidential seal at top center. Washington, March 8, 1971. To James S. Copley, La Jolla, California. Fine condition. In full, “A number of recent Union editorials have come to my attention, and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your continuing support and encouragement. I was especially pleased to read the February 26 editorial, ‘United States Renews Pledge,’ because it rightly underscores this Administration’s determination to meet our international commitments as we continue to seek a just and lasting peace. And, needless to say, it was gratifying to note the February 24 editorial backing my decision to suspend the Davis-Bacon Act. Pat joins me in sending warmest regards to Helen and to you.”Copley’s editorial followed President Nixon’s February 25, 1971, foreign policy address to the Nation in which Nixon said, in part, “I am keeping my pledge to end America's involvement in this war … What America does - or fails to do - will determine whether peace and freedom can be won in the coming generation … We will maintain our commitments, but we will make sure our own troop levels or any financial support to other nations is appropriate to current threats and needs … We shall provide a shield if a nuclear power threatens the freedom of a nation allied with us or of a nation whose survival we consider vital to our security … We will search for consecutive discussions with Communist China while maintaining our defense commitment to Taiwan … We know what our vital interests are in the Middle East. Those interests include friendly and constructive relations with all nations in the area. Other nations know that we are ready to protect those vital interests. And one good reason why other nations take us at our word in the Middle East is because the United States has kept its word in Southeast Asia…”A conservative Republican, James S. Copley (1916-1973) was publisher of the “San Diego Union,” “The San Diego Union-Tribune,” and the “San Diego Evening Tribune” from 1947 until his death in 1973. He was Chairman of the Board of The Copley Press, a newspaper chain comprising 15 daily and 32 weekly publications."

Under the tutelage of [old friend Sam] Garfield, Meyer expanded his oil and gas holdings. The two men bought more Michigan leases together, and they extended into Ohio ??? He was scarcely an oil tycoon ??? and never an oil millionaire. But thanks to Sam Garfield, he was successful. In 1964, Meyer???s old friend Doc Stacher had avoided the worst consequences of a conviction for tax evasion by consenting to deportation and going to Israel to live. In July 1970, Meyer Lansky decided not to wait for the conviction ??? or anything else ??? Lansky landed in Israel on July 27, 1970 ??? He wanted to stay in Israel ??? and he wanted to live there not as a visitor, but as an Israeli citizen.??? On December 7, 1970, exactly one month before he wrote the letter here offered, Lansky requested Israeli citizenship under Israelâ??s Law of Return which gives any Jew the right to be granted Israeli citizenship. However, it denies citizenship to a Jew â??with a criminal past, likely to endanger the public welfare.â? A week later, in an affidavit, Lansky stated that he retired from active business in 1959 and was living exclusively on dividends from his real estate and oil investments, and that his annual income was â??roughly $60,000 (before taxes).â? The checks Lansky mentions Sam sent him were dividend checks from the Watson Oil Wells. In March 1971, two months after he wrote this letter, Lansky was charged with being involved in a conspiracy to skim from the Flamingo Hotel, his old Las Vegas venture with Bugsy Siegel. In May, Lanskyâ??s U.S. passport was revoked and in September, his application for Israeli citizenship was denied. â??Meyer Lansky v. the State of Israelâ? was heard before the Israeli Supreme Court and on September 11, 1972, the court ruled unanimously against Lansky. After trying to find refuge outside the United States, on November 7, 1972, Meyer Lansky returned to Miami and was promptly arrested by FBI agents aboard the plane. In a 1988 interview with Robert Lacey, Anna Strasberg revealed that Meyer Lansky had phoned her husband, Lee Strasberg who was nominated for the 1975 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role of Hyman Roth in â??The Godfather, Part II.â? With her husbandâ??s knowledge, Anna listened in on the extension. Lansky said, â??You did good.â? Lee replied, â??Thank you. I tried.â? Lansky added, almost with a sense of humor according to Anna, â??Now, why couldnâ??t you have made me more sympathetic? After all, I am a grandfather.â?"

Comprises motherboard with 132 integrated circuits, 2 power supplies, 2 MOS shift registers (1024 bits each) and cooling fan, in customized steel case with 3-prong power connector, the front panel with a toggle power switch, 12 incandescent lights, 15 pushbuttons and various lettering including the name "KENBAK-1." Approximately 490 x 292 x 110 mm. Preserved in a foam-padded protective instrument case. (2) Binder of documentation including Programming Reference Manual KENBAK-1 Computer (Los Angeles: KENBAK, 1971; iii, 24pp.); "Installation & maintenance" (photocopy; 8pp.); "Theory of operation" (photocopy; 9-42, 26pp.); original coding sheets, mimeographed purchase guides, reviews, stationery, etc. (3) Laboratory exercises KENBAK-1 computer. Variously paginated. Los Angeles: KENBAK, 1971. Original wrappers, spiral-bound. (4) Advertisement for the KENBAK-1 computer. In Scientific American 224, no. 3 (September 1971): 194. Whole number, in original printed wrappers. The prototype of the KENBAK-1, the world’s first commercially available stored-program personal computer, so deemed in 1987 by a panel of judges, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, at the Computer Museum in Boston. The stored program concept, in which both program and data are processed in an electronic memory, was the key concept in the design of the electronic computer as theorized by John von Neumann in the so-called von Neumann architecture. Because the Kenbak-1 was the first personal computer to apply this key concept in its design, it is an especially important landmark in the history of computing. Only about 40 or 50 of these machines were ever built; of which perhaps ten remain extant. The KENBAK-1, invented by computer engineer John Blankenbaker, went on sale in 1971, five years before the Apple 1. This prototype model of the KENBAK-1 is the very one used in the first demonstration of a commercial personal computer, which took place in May 1971 at an Anaheim, California convention of high school mathematics teachers. This unit was still operational in July 2015. "[The KENBAK-1] was created in 1971 by John Blankenbaker, working in his garage in Los Angeles. Initial sales commenced in September of 1971. It was intended to be educational and the professionals in the field were enthusiastic but it was a struggle to convince the non-professionals that they could buy a real computer at this price ($750), thus only some 40 devices were sold, mainly to schools. "The creator of Kenbak-1—John Blankenbaker, had a long experience in the field of computers. He started the design of a computing device as early as in the winter of 1949, when he was a 19 y.o. physics freshman at Oregon State College, inspirited by an article in a magazine. After graduation from the college in 1952, he worked at Hughes Aircraft Co. in the department for digital computers, designing the arithmetic unit for a business data processor. Some time in the late 1950s he began to think there could be simple computers which could be afforded by individuals. "As late as in the fall of 1970 he found himself unemployed and decided to investigate what might be done to make a computer for personal use. He wanted the computer to be low cost, educational, and able to give the user satisfaction with simple programs. The computer could be serial and slow which would reduce the cost yet create the environment that was desired. It should demonstrate as many programming concepts as was possible. Because of the small size, the native language of the unit would be the machine language. Above all, it had to be a stored program machine in the von Neumann sense. To keep the costs low, switches and lights were the input and output of the machine. (Some thought was given to punched card input, but it was never developed.) By the spring of 1971, the logic printed circuit board had been built and the computer was assembled [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Scratch (Original script for the 1971 play)

New York: Theatre 28 Company, 1971. Rehearsal draft script for the short-lived play, MacLeish's last work. Based on Stephen Vincent Benet's short story "The Devil and Daniel Webster." Though originally intended to feature Dylan's songs exclusively for the soundtrack (some of his classics from the 1960s, and four songs that had appeared on the 1970 album "New Morning"), Dylan and MacLeish were unable to reconcile the dark tone of the play with the lighter tone of Dylan's songs and amicably parted ways. This draft features several holograph notations, one of which indicates a Dylan song that was intended to be used during a scene. The play debuted at the St. James Theatre on May 6, 1971, ran for only four performances and closed on May 8, 1971. Blank yellow studio wrappers. Title page present, dated 1970, noted as REHEARSAL DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter MacLeish, story writer Stephen Vincent Benet, and songwriter Dylan. 91 leaves, mimeograph. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus bound with two gold screw brads.

Play It Again, Sam (Original screenplay for the 1972 film, early draft script)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures / APJAC Productions/Rollins-Joffe Productions, 1971. Draft script for the 1972 film. An early shooting draft, with holograph notations throughout that relate almost entirely to camera direction (blocking, cuts, montage notes, etc.), suggesting they may have been made by director Ross. Some notes on character development are present in a few places as well. This draft precedes by a month the only other one we have encountered, and differs significantly from it, with a completely different ending. A comedy that is pretty difficult to overestimate: even though it was not directed by Woody Allen, it was the template for the many great films he would subsequently write and direct in the 1970s, in terms of shooting style, timing, romantic themes, and the actors involved (the irrepressible trio of Allen, Keaton, and Roberts). Allen had already directed two films at this point ("Take the Money and Run" and "Bananas"), but this film is significant in that it predicted the more substantive romantic comedies that would later place him among the most important filmmakers of his era, notably "Annie Hall" (1977) and "Manhattan" (1979). Pre-production scripts from Allen films are quite uncommon, as their circulation is generally confined to those directly involved in the film. Blue studio wrappers. Credits on the front wrapper for screenwriter Allen and Studio Duplicating Service. Title page present, with a credit for Allen as both playwright and screenwriter, with a holograph copy number (5) and a date 7/2/71. 98 leaves, mimeograph. Pages and wrapper Very Good plus, bound with two gold bolt brads.

Pulp [Memoirs of a Ghost Writer] (Original screenplay, camera operator Dusty Miller's copy, signed by Mike Hodges, Lizabeth Scott, Amerigo Tot, Patrick Browning [Downing], Mickey Rooney, and others)

London and Beverly Hills, CA: Three Michaels Film Productions / United Artists, 1971. Revised draft script for the 1972 film. Cameraman Dusty Miller's working copy, with his notations throughout. Variously INSCRIBED in round-robin fashion on the title page by director Mike Hodges ("Thank you for coming to my funeral"), cast members Lizabeth Scott, Amerigo Tot, Patrick Browning [Downing], Mickey Rooney, and others. Included is a call sheet and a set of 5 color Polaroid snapshots showing the setups for a funeral sequence in the film. A film every bit the equal of its counterpart, "Get Carter," made by Hodges and Caine the year before, but different in almost every way. Caine effortlessly switches gears from the vigilante killer in "Carter" to a pulp novelist who travels abroad and wanders into a complex murder scenario, unwittingly becoming a part of the puzzle. Grim, funny, and not for the dim. Red studio wrappers. Title page present, with credits for screenwriter/director Hodges and producer Michael Klinger, dated November 17, 1971. 113 leaves, mimeograph. Pages Very Good plus, with silverfish damage to a few leaves, wrapper Very Good plus, with faint dampstaining to the rear wrapper, and a few light creases, bound with two silver brads.

First Edition. Full-Leather. Near Fine. Illus. by Valadon, Suzanne. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Limited Edition.
