        Tales from the Crypt (Original screenplay for the 1972 film)

      Amicus Productions, Middlesex 1971 - Draft script for the 1972 British film.Based on the comic book series by Al Feldstein amd William M. Gaines, published by EC Comics from 1950 to 1955. In a pun-filled style of ironic horror, told in a series of episodes, the film stars Sir Ralph Richardson as the cheery Crypt Keeper who spins tales about how various people have died. The episodes range in content from a creepy Santa Claus (starring Collins and Boddy, the first of the "psycho" Santas) to the consequences of disbelief in the supernatural. Several notable stars also featured in the various episodes include Ian Hendry, Peter Cushing, Robert Hutton, Barbara Murray, and Nigel Patrick. Produced by Amicus Productions, chief rival to England's most powerful horror studio, Hammer Films. The film spawned a sequel called, "The Vault of Horror" (1973), also composed of episodes based on the EC comics, and a third film, George A. Romero's "Creepshow" (1972), was produced as an homage to the look and feel of the prior films, without direct connection to the original comic book series. After more than a decade, the franchise received a TV spot: the HBO series, "Tales from the Crypt," featuring a deathly and corpselike version of The Crypt Keeper, voiced by John Kassir. The film also influenced Ernest Dickerson's "Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight" (1995) and Gilbert Adler's "Bordello of Blood" (1996), but the subsequent films never matched the first for its full and chilling merit.Set in the catacombs of a graveyard, shot on location in England.       Hexagono, La Plata, Argentina 1971 - A complete set of Hexagono’71 edited by Edgardo Antonio Vigo between 1971 and 1975 missing only 4 of the 70 contributions (replaced by colour xeroxes of the items). See. A seminal artist’s periodical featured in the MoMA library exhibition The Unmaker of Objects: Edgardo Antonio Vigo’s Marginal Media, 2014. Hexagono 71 was distributed as an envelope containing loose-leaf illustrations, woodcuts, drawings, silkscreen posters, visual poems, essays, photo montage, collage, tickets with stamps, photocopy works and mail art elements, by Argentinian and international contributors. An important mail art periodical of the South American avant-garde that mixed experimental art and literature with a political sensibility: indeed, Hexagono 71 was inaugurated during the dictatorship of 1966–73 and many of the works engage with the violence of the military regime. The issues were systematized using a lettering system, as opposed to numbers, and its covers often printed a logo design in varying colours, with cut-out labels attached with thread and circular perforations.       1971. Tiratura: 15/80 - Antoni Clavé (Barcellona 1913, St. Tropez 2005) - Le prime opere grafiche del Nostro risalgono al 1939 e coincidono con il suo arrivo a Parigi. Qui ebbe la fortuna di imbattersi in Edmond Desjobert uno dei nomi più importanti nel settore dell'incisione, che gli svelò tutti i segreti. Dieci anni più tardi iniziò la sua collaborazione con la "Guilde Internazionale de la Gravure" di Nesto Jacometti, che in seguito diverrà "L'Oeuvre Gravé". Ricevette attestati internazionali come il Premio Unesco dell'Incisione alla XXVIII Biennale d'Arte di Venezia (1956) e due anni più tardi il premio del Museo KamaKura alla Biennale dell'Incisione di Tokyo. Clavé ha sempre avuto un rapporto completo e fisico nei confronti delle sue creazioni, in particolar modo con quelle riferite al torchio, da indurre Pierre Seghers alla felice definizione "Le incisioni di Clavé sono l'incisore stesso". Infatti nelle sue opere è viva e presente la storia pittorica della Spagna, quella Spagna dei grandi, da Goya a Velasquez fino a El Greco ed anche le esperienze di una vita, da quando incominciò negli anni trenta la sperimentazione dei materiali usati dagli artisti dell'avanguardia: disparati collages, corde, cartoni, tessuti e fogli di giornale. Nelle incisioni non sistemerà solamente dei collages, ma si avvarrà anche del gaufrage in modo da ottenere effetti di rilievo. Tra gli anni settanta e ottanta del novecento tenne numerose mostre in Europa, Stati Uniti ed in Giappone. The three double-sided copper plates from which the plates were printed passed from Goya's grandson Mariano to John Savile Lumley, then to Colnaghi, from whom Philip Hofer acquired them in the 1930s. He, in turn, gave them in 1970 to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, after the present edition of 150 sets had been printed. The Museum's policies absolutely prohibit any further edition. Permafo was the name of a conceptual art group, art gallery, and journal founded in the 1970's by art critic Antoni Dzieduszycki together with artists Zbigniew D ubak, Natalia Lach-Lachowicz (Natalia LL), and Andrzej Lachowicz. The group promoted art based on the process of recording reality. According to founding member Natalia LL, "Our goal was to treat photography as a 'transparent' means of recording, where any decoration or visual delusion would be reduced to a minimum."         The Fly on the Wall

      Harper & Row, NY 1971 - Hillerman's second book, a mystery set among political reporters in a fictional state capitol; Hillerman himself had been, according to the publisher, "a longtime political reporter." This is one of his only mysteries that is not a Navajo tale. Inscribed by the author to a Harper & Row sales rep: "To ___ _______ again - In hopes he can have similar success unloading this one, Regards, Tony Hillerman." Hillerman's first book, The Blessing Way, was published in 1970 and although he was a completely unknown author and the book had an unusual subject matter for the time -- a murder mystery set on an Indian reservation, and involving an Indian policeman as its protagonist -- it had sold well enough to go into at least five printings in the first year and be resold for a paperback edition. Clearly Hillerman was hoping for similar success here, although it would be more than a decade before he experienced much in the way of additional commercial success for his novels.         Pork (Original poster for the London performance run of the 1971 play at The Round House)

      London: The Roundhouse Theatre, 1971. Original poster for the single London performance run of Andy Warhol's only play, "Pork," August 2-28, 1971. "Pork" opened at LaMama Theatre in New York City on May 5, 1971 and ran for two weeks before transferring to the Roundhouse Theatre. Produced by Ira Gale and directed by Anthony Ingrassia, the cast included Jayne County as Vulva, Tony Zanetta as B. Marlowe and Cherry Vanilla as Amanda Pork. "Pork" was based on tape-recorded telephone conversations between Andy Warhol and Brigid Berlin about her family's private life, and proved to be a defining counter-cultural event, which would have a significant influence on the evolution of the glam, glitter and punk movements. The London production in particular was instrumental in the transformation of David Bowie's visual style and stage presentation.  "Pork," assistant director Lee Black Childers explained, grew out of "boxes and boxes and hours and hours of cassette tapes," comprising every single telephone conversation that Warhol and Brigid Berlin had in the previous three years, and painstakingly transcribed by Warhol's long-suffering assistant Pat Hackett. "Basically, it was nothing more than a lot of pointless conversation. It was a comment on a society where nobody listens to anybody else. None of the conversations were linked, everybody just talked." Anthony Ingrassia, the show's four-hundred-pound director, painted an even more disorganized impression. Warhol's initial vision for "Pork" comprised no fewer than twenty-nine separate acts that would have lasted around two hundred hours. Ingrassia edited this down into a fast-paced two-act play that shifted its attention from a barely disguised Factory to a fairly recognizable Max's Kansas City and on to Berlin's hotel room. The lead character, Amanda Pork, was Berlin herself in all but name. Other prominent characters included Billy Noname, a businesslike gentleman named Pall, a vicious blonde superstar called Vulva, two nude men with pastel-covered genitals named the Pepsodent Twins, and, practically immobile at the heart of the action, a pale, deadpan, laconic slice of living ennui named B.       [Fremont, MI]: The Sumac Press, 1971. Octavo broadside (23 x 15 cm). Very near fine. First separate edition, the slightly more common state printed in black ink. However, this copy exhibits a feature the bibliographers identify with the red-ink variety: the period is missing at the end of the final line, after "noose." Harrison inscribed some copies of this broadside with an indication that only 33 copies were printed. However, Orr and Torrey cite Dan Gerber -- the printer and Sumac collaborator - - as the authority for likelihood that between 80 and 100 copies were printed. Although some copies were signed by the author and/or printer, many, like the example in hand, were not signed. Still, in any form, one of Harrison's least common publications. ORR & TORREY A.8.a.

With the original cover, designed by Günther Stiller. Ligeti's vinyl inscribed to Carl Dahlhaus (1828-1989) the German musicologist and his wife Anne-Marie. Ligeti and Dahlhaus had a famous discussion on musical form, at the Darmsädter Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in 1965. György Ligeti (1923-2006) was a Hungarian (Transylvanian) born composer. Studied at the Music Academy of Cluj and Budapest. After his graduation he started to collect folk music in Romania and taught composing and counterpointing at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He left Hungary after the revolution in 1956, and started to work at the radio station in Cologne where he made acquaintance with Karlheinz Stockhausen who had a major influence on his art. In 1959 settled down in Vienna and became citizen in 1967. Taught at the Universities of Darmstadt, Stockholm, Stanford and Hamburg. Under the influence of Stockhausen started to compose music for electronic instruments, and these works, "Artikulation" and "Atmosphères", gave him reputation in the Western European music scene. Soon he gave up composing electronic music but his experiences with such instruments made and effect on his later compositions. With the original cover, designed by Günther Stiller First edition.         Carbon Typescript of "There It Is"

      (n.p.): (n.p.). [ca. 1971]. 11-page carbon typescript with some holograph emendations, of an article which was published in The Guardian in the U.K. in 1971 and never published elsewhere. The Guardian gave Stone his press credentials and paid for his trip to Vietnam, and this is the only nonfiction he wrote about what he encountered there. After he returned from Vietnam, his next novel, his second overall, was Dog Soldiers, about a reporter and a Vietnam vet smuggling heroin back to the U.S. from Southeast Asia. Dog Soldiers won the National Book Award and was made into the acclaimed Nicholas Roeg film, "Who'll Stop the Rain?" Several of the anecdotes in this article were lifted and inserted directly into the novel, and the overall tone -- mordant humor in the face of grim misery -- is also shared by the book. No manuscript copy of this piece was in the Robert Stone archive when it was sold to the New York Public Library, nor in any of the updates that have been sold since. A key item in Stone's overall body of work. Stone won the National Book Award once and was a finalist five times, putting him in a very small category of writers that includes such figures as John Updike, Saul Bellow, and Vladimir Nabokov.       Paramount, Los Angeles 1971 - Second Draft script for the 1972 film. Copy belonging to character actor Randy Jurgensen, with his name in holograph blue ink to the title page, also noted as copy No. 71 in green holograph ink to the right of same. Jurgensen played the main henchman in the scene where Sonny Corleone (James Caan) is shot up rather thoroughly at a toll booth. Included with the script are the actor's Polaroid color photographs from the "toll booth" shoot (four 5 x 7 inch photos, and one 8 x 10 photo), including a bloodied James Caan walking about the set, very much alive. Jurgensen was a constant presence as a character actor and production manager on the New Hollywood scene in the 1970s and beyond, working in "The French Connection" (1971), "The Seven-Ups" (1973), "Sorcerer" (1977), "The Brinks Job" (1978), and many others, along with a more recent appearance in "Donnie Brasco" (1997) as a wiseguy.Also included is a 14 x 7 inch 3-color painted placard with the film's logo, the Paramount logo, and "Alfran Prods FILM CAR" printed at the bottom right. The placard was placed in the windshield of a car used for tracking shots. Black titled wrappers. Title page present, dated March 1, 1971, noted as SECOND DRAFT, with credits for screenwriters Coppola and Puzo. 175 leaves, mimeograph, with yellow revision pages throughout, dated 3/16/71.
