Talking About Oz (Vintage audio reel)

N.p.: N.p., 1971. Vintage audio recording on three quarter inch tape, three minutes and 30 seconds long, of John Lennon and Yoko Ono on Radio Free London circa 1971. The couple spend the time advocating for free speech and on behalf of the founders of "Oz" magazine, then on trial for obscenity and "conspiracy to corrupt public morals." "Oz" was one of the most influentially designed and controversial underground magazines of the psychedelic era, and the trial became something of a cause celebre among the British left, with Lennon and Ono leading the charge, releasing a benefit single featuring the tracks "God Save Oz" and "Do the Oz" to raise funds for the defense and recording numerous radio spots such as this one to publicize the issue. In this recording, Lennon and Ono discuss the case and, after taking some shots at the presiding judge (whom Lennon refers to as "an old wanker"), Lennon sings the Harry Lauder standard "Keep Right on to the End of the Road," with Ono singing the repeated line "Let's not fall asleep." The recording ends with Ono saying "don't fall asleep fellas" and Lennon adding "and girls." This differs of other Radio Free London spots, which typically ended with Lennon signing off by saying "radio free witness," leading us to believe this is a variant recording or an outtake of similar material used for "The Lost Lennon Tapes" radio series. Reel in Fine condition, housed in a Very Good cardboard box with Lennon's and Ono's names and the title typed on the front. Also included in a CD-R containing the audio.

Previous owner gift inscription to front free end paper; faint rubbing to cloth at edges. Gilt stamping very sharp. Dust jacket shows several tiny dings, the main fault being horizontal strips of adhesive and plastic along the top and bottom edges of the blank verso from where publisher's "Duraseal" laminate was formerly glued down; label to verso of front flap lightly offset and visible from the front.         The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments

      A. J. Holman Company, Philadelphia, PA 1971 - A unique, humorous, and poignant item, E. B. White's (1899-1985) personal Bible. Unique in that White has signed the Bible on the second free endpaper, humorous in that he has filled out the pre-printed gift presentation page to himself on May 28, 1975, on the occasion of "his buying a new Bible," and poignant that the only indication of any use is his recording of the death of his wife on the pre-printed page for family information: "Katharine Sergeant White July 20, 1977." According to Martha White, granddaughter of the Whites, neither were religious but as Katharine's health was declining in 1975 she may have asked E.B. to buy a Bible in which to record her death--which he did two years later. Katharine S. White (1892-1977) was the longtime fiction editor at The New Yorker where she met E.B. White in the late 1920s; they were married in 1929. From the Estate of Joel (1930-1997) & Allene White. 280, 166 [Concordance], 22, [8] maps pp. 8vo. Flexible black leather binding with gold embossed titling to spine, all edges gilt, black ribbon marker. Black leather binding. Housed in custom clamshell box. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Teachings of Don Juan and A Separate Reality

Berkeley/NY: University of California/Simon & Schuster. (1971). The third printing of the first title and the first printing of the second title in Castaneda's series of books about the mythical Yaqui Indian shaman, don Juan Matus. Castaneda's first three books were written as a student of anthropology at the University of California, and all of the don Juan books were taken as nonfiction until skeptics began questioning them in 1976, by which time Castaneda had already disappeared from view. The books were originally considered to be groundbreaking, in that they posited for the first time a coherent, systematized, and still living, body of spiritual beliefs and practices among Native American tribes, something that had not been done before. Peter Matthiessen was once quoted to the effect that had there been an established, coherent practice of a "Native American way" he might have chosen that over the "Zen way" that he did choose, if only because of its origin being closer to his own. Both of these copies from the library of Peter Matthiessen and bearing his ownership signature and his underlinings and notations throughout. In the second volume, in particular, his annotations tend to note similarities between don Juan's insights as a Yaqui shaman and perspectives derived from Zen and other Oriental philosophical systems. Matthiessen had read these books shortly before the trip he recounts in The Snow Leopard, and in various sections of that book he spends time commenting on, and speculating about, the similarities between Tibetan and Native American cultures. Very good copies, each lacking their dust jacket. Hardcover.
