In Concert: Comerford Theatre, Tuesday February 2, 1971 (Original poster)

New York: Magnus Productions. Original promotional poster for a performance by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band and Ry Cooder at the Comerford Theatre in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Tuesday, February 2, 1971. At first blush, a double bill that doesn't quite seem congruous. But on consideration, Captain Beefheart and Ry Cooder had a great deal in common. Beefheart was a experimental blues deconstructionist, and Cooder was a blues historian with deep roots in American folk music. Neither musician performed with any great frequency, and both stopped performing in general (with a few exceptions) in the late 1980s, each more interested in recording and exploring outside the world of touring and promotion. Beefheart gave up music for art, and Cooder gave up making his own records in favor of assisting the work of obscure and undiscovered folk artists the world over. Beefheart was at this moment in time in between "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" (1970) and "Clear Spot" (1972). Cooder was in between "Into the Purple Valley" (1971) and "Boomer's Story" (1972). Looking at this poster, we are between the devil and the deep blue sea. One wonders if the two men met, and how they got along. A serious rarity, and a moment in time that no vinyl record store clerk, even with the worst hangover of his life, could ever discredit. 12 x 22 inches, rolled. Near Fine.

Time Out. 520 issues of 'London's Living Guide' from number 63 (1971) to number 661 (1983) in 513 volumes (7 of which are double issues).

Time Out In London, London 1971 - Published weekly (except for double issues) by Time Out In London then Time Out Ltd., and edited initially by Tony Elliott. Not a complete run, with 79 issues not present (list available upon request), but still a very representative collection from a time when Time Out engaged more with social and political issues than it does now, and when its more appealing design, like its content, was less inclined towards the mainstream. As Elliott explains in Jonathon Green's 'Days in the Life: Voices from the English Underground 1961-1971', the magazine (1968-) was founded as a hip What's On, taking over from 'International Times'' What's Happening page and from John Hopkins' 'BIT', an underground information exchange. The alternative society acted as a stimulus to 'Time Out', whose listings reflected the late 1960s creativity it promoted, but the magazine was not dedicated solely to that society. Michelene Wandor says: 'I think up until the final takeover by capitalism in 1981 'Time Out' was THE survivor of the 60s. What it did was very cleverly combine a democratic open approach to cultural happenings, cultural events with a political edge to them, and soft-edged capitalism.' Furthermore along with poetry, film, dance, theatre, agitprop and more, 'Time Out' is of course a guide to what was happening in London, and to an extent it is synonymous with the city. It is also more than a listings magazine. Some of the subjects covered by articles and interviews in this collection include: women's liberation and feminism, race relations and immigration, justice, welfare, terror and war including Vietnam, town planning and development, queer issues, drugs and health, squatting and accommodation, abortion, nature and the environment, the river and canals, travel and transport, voting, the prison system, funding, censorship, religion, cults, technology, population, the media, conspiracy, and loneliness and mental health. Specifically, there is coverage of the Oz Trial and the case of the Angry Brigade and the Stoke Newington Eight. Cover stories feature Wilhelm Reich, Kenneth Anger, Frank Zappa, Richard Pryor, William Burroughs, Derek Jarman, the Sex Pistols, J. G. Ballard, Hunter S. Thompson, the death of John Lennon, disco, Bruce Lee, Ali versus Foreman, Gilbert & George, the Velvet Underground, hooliganism, science fiction, David Cronenberg, Soho, 'snuff rock', the Anti-Nazi Carnival, Suicide, Bob Dylan, and more. The run is from the collection of Chris Petit, who is named as Film Editor from issue 196 (1973) to about 481 (1979), with issues 482-3 not present. His involvement with the magazine continued either side of these issues. During the period represented by the magazines offered here, cinema is said to have gone through a golden period, and cinema is prominent with regard to both listings and articles. Petit himself, who was a prolific reviewer for the magazine, interviews figures such as Warren Beatty, Milos Foreman and Jack Nicholson ('One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'), Nicolas Roeg ('The Man Who Fell To Earth'), Robert Altman, and Harvey Keitel. He writes about subjects including paranoia in Hollywood cinema, exploitation film, Jean-Pierre Melville, Bob Dylan's 'Renaldo and Clara', Robert Aldrich, and for the 10th anniversary issue his 10 worst films. Issue 106 contains an early interview with Petit's frequent collaborator Iain Sinclair concerning his Albion Village Press. Included with the collection are 9 assorted issues from 1984-5, which include pieces on censorship and the sexual backlash, Eddie Constantine (Lemmy Caution in Godard's 'Alphaville'), Robert Mitchum, Quentin Crisp, David Lynch's 'Dune', subterranean London, and Martin Scorsese on Powell and Pressburger. Petit writes about John Belushi, and interviews Bryan Ferry and Jack Nicholson again. Early issues of 'Time Out' are difficult to find, and to form a collection of this size would be extremely hard. The issues not present are spread evenly across the run, though o [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Young Ladies in Bathing Costumes (signed)

Fukushu-Shudan, Tokyo 1971 - Large 8vo, Unpaginated (104pp). Printed wraps. Black & White plates. Text in Japanese. Boldly signed Araki (Noduyoshi Arakiss) to titlepage. Second volume by the Geribara 5 (The Diarrhea-Shit Reproductive Collective of 5), who formed following the dissolution of the Provoke group. Parr/Badger- "Mizugi no Yangu Redii-Tachi (Young Ladies in Bathing Suits), is equally controversial [as Benjo (Toilet), the Geribara 5's first book]. It is a strictly Conceptual book, each page containing a trio of three-quarter-length portraits of teenage girls on the beach, the majority posing somewhat self-consciously for the camera. The sheer repetitiveness of these bland images tells us much about the homogeneity of teenage culture, but that is not the controversial aspect. Beneath [or above] each photograph is the girl's address and telephone number, printed in facsimile handwriting. The inevitable invasion of privacy inherent in the process of taking and publishing pictures is one thing. If the personal details.were valid [which, according to Araki, approximately one-half were], the book raises issues that go beyond imagistic representation into areas verging on abuse and sexual harassment."         Scratch (Original script for the 1971 play)

Theatre 28 Company, New York 1971 - Rehearsal draft script for the short-lived play, MacLeish's last work. Based on Stephen Vincent Benet's short story "The Devil and Daniel Webster." Though originally intended to feature Dylan's songs exclusively for the soundtrack (some of his classics from the 1960s, and four songs that had appeared on the 1970 album "New Morning"), Dylan and MacLeish were unable to reconcile the dark tone of the play with the lighter tone of Dylan's songs and amicably parted ways. This draft features several holograph notations, one of which indicates a Dylan song that was intended to be used during a scene. The play debuted at the St. James Theatre on May 6, 1971, ran for only four performances and closed on May 8, 1971.Blank yellow studio wrappers. Title page present, dated 1970, noted as REHEARSAL DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter MacLeish, story writer Stephen Vincent Benet, and songwriter Dylan. 91 leaves, mimeograph. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus bound with two gold screw brads. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Its graphic depictions of sex, violence, and drug abuse in the youth culture of Oklahoma were acclaimed by critics for stripping bare the myth that Middle America had been immune to the social convulsions that rocked America in the 1960s. The raw, haunting images taken in 1963, 1968, and 1971 document a youth culture progressively overwhelmed by self-destruction and are as moving and disturbing today as when they first appeared. Cited in numerous publications- 260 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 272-73 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 25 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 208-09 of "The Book of 101 Books". Amazing. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

If They Come in the Morning: Voices of Resistance

USA: Signet, DEC 1971 This Novel is for the Collectors of True Vintage First EditionsThe trial of Angela Yvonne Davis in connection with the prisoner revolt by three black prisoners on August 7, 1970 at the Marin County Courthouse will be remembered as one of America's most historic political trials, and no one can tell the story better than Miss Davis herself. This book is also perhaps the most comprehensive and thorough analysis of that increasingly important symbol — the political prisoner. Of her trial, Miss Davis writes, "I am charged with three capital offenses — murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy. My life is at stake in this case — not simply the life of a lone individual, but a life which has been given over to the struggles of my people, a life which belongs to Black people who are tired of poverty, and racism, of the unjust imprisonment of tens of thousands of our brothers and sisters."         Will Barnet-The Young Couple-1971 Etching-SIGNED

1971 - "The Young Couple" by Will Barnet, Signed Etching printed in 1971 from an edition size of 225. The overall size of the Etching is 28.5 x 23.25 inches. The condition of this piece has been graded as A-: Near Mint, very light signs of handling. Here is some supplemental information about the Etching: Signed, Titled and Numbered, #211/225, all in pencil by Will Barnet. Limited edition Etching/Aquatint.Barnet is probably best known for his enigmatic portraits of family, made from the 1970s onwards, notable the Silent Seasons series. However, his earlier works maintain an edginess and brooding contemplation that is even more remarkable when compared with the more placid and pretty works which followed his second marriage. His early work reflected the more popular abstract styles with his later work returning to figure painting. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Another Day, Another Dollar ... From His Novel 'Epitaph for a Deadbeat'

London: Walter Shenson Films, 1971. 4to, [1], 98 pp., photomechanically reproduced from typescript on rectos only. Bradbound into blue covers with a die cut window to upper wrapper. With a tls from a law firm laid in, submitting the script to an agent for consideration by Charles Bronson. In addition, "Tony Curtis" is also written on the title page in pencil. An unproduced screenplay by David Markson of his own 1961 mystery novel, the second in the Fannin series, a potent satire of Greenwich Village bohemian life with a mystery of authorship within the narrative which anticipates the more conceptual leanings of Markson's later work. We find no reference to the screenplay ever having been published. Perhaps it was written in order to capitalize upon the unlikely success the year prior of the film Dirty Dingus Magee, the anti-western and Frank Sinatra vessel based on Markson's book The Ballad of Dingus Magee. Though the present script was never filmed, Markson did go on to write the script for the cult pessimist 1972 anti-western 'Cry for Me, Billy' The strangest facet of the screenplay is that in the script Markson has transposed all of the action to London - a strange decision given that so much of the effectiveness of the Fannin novels is their strong sense of place in New York. Perhaps the reason was financial, or was requested by Walter Shenson. In the extensive annals of unrealized projects by our favorite writers, the idea of Charles Bronson starring in a David Markson-penned satire of Greenwich Village bohemian life geographically translated to London is particularly intriguing, and proves once again that there is no justice in this world.
