        Hexágono 71. No. 1/a (1971) through 13/e (1975) (all published)

A complete series in 13 folders of the political artist's book-style journal under the editorial direction of Edgardo Antonio Vigo, which was distributed as an envelope or folder containing loose illustrations, visual poems, works "to be created", woodcuts, drawings, essays, collages, mail art elements, and calls for works by local and international authors, and containing contributions from a group of international artists and authors hailing from Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, the United States, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Illustrated throughout. Square 4to. Original printed cardstock envelopes and paper folders, contents loose as issued. Some slight age-darkening and very minor foxing to some of the folders and envelopes. La Plata, Argentina 1971-1975. An important experimental mail art periodical from the South American avant-garde movement which rose up during the dictatorship of 1966-1973, Hexágono 71 contained no editorial commentary, page numbers, or editorial credits. There was not a fixed group of contributing artists either; rather, the issues were formed around the works that were sent in. Many of the works engaged with the violence of the military regime. Vigo wished to "share the necessity of breaking the dangerous suffocation that hovers over the universal creative-investigator's free expression." The issues were also systematized by a lettering system rather than sequential numbers. Hexágono 71 had a small subscription-based distribution centered around circles close to Vigo, both in the Judicial Courts, where he worked, and among his fellow artists. Vigo also would surreptitiously abandon issues in train cars, for the purpose of reaching an unknown audience.

Play It Again, Sam (Original screenplay for the 1972 film, Revised Shooting script)

Paramount / APJAC Productions / Rollins-Joffe Productions, Los Angeles 1971 - Revised Shooting script for the 1972 film. A comedy that is pretty difficult to overestimate: even though it was not directed by Woody Allen, it was the template for the many great films he would subsequently write and direct in the 1970s, in terms of shooting style, timing, romantic themes, and the actors involved (the irrepressible trio of Allen, Keaton, and Roberts). Allen had already directed two films at this point ("Take the Money and Run" and "Bananas"), but this film is significant in that it predicted the more substantive romantic comedies that would later place him among the most important filmmakers of his era, notably "Annie Hall" (1977) and "Manhattan" (1979). Pre-production scripts from Allen films are quite uncommon, as their circulation is generally confined to those directly involved in the film. Orange titled wrappers, stamped REVISED SHOOTING SCRIPT on the front wrapper. Credits on the front wrapper for APJAC Productions and Rollins-Joffe Productions. Title page present, with a credit for Allen as both playwright and screenwriter. 120 leaves, mimeograph, with a single blue revision page, dated 8/30/71, and a few revision pages that are undated and on a brighter, thicker page stock (but still mimeograph). Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with two gold brads. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Signed U.S. Flag Flown to the Moon

The Moon, 1971. fine. Silk American flag (4" X 6") carried to the Moon and back aboard Apollo 14. Fine condition (gleaming). This comes with an incontrovertible signed letter of provenance on Apollo stationery, but additionally and more pointedly (and reassuringly) this flag is titled and signed, in black ink, directly on 2 of its white stripes in the handwriting of Apollo 14 Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell, "Flown to the Moon Aboard Kitty Hawk on Apollo 14, Edgar Mitchell, LMP" an undetachable authenticity, that is better than letters or certificates which can be shuffled (and shuffled they are), as the majority of these flags when seen (if seen) are glued at the corners to a printed certificate, from which they can be removed and replaced with any flag. Furthermore, left over (or faked up) certificates can have said "any flag" added, but not this one, since the signed stripes are indivisible from the flag, and they affirm exactly what it is, and do so on sight, a nice feature if you want to frame it.

Cylindric Algebras. Part I. With an Introductory Chapter: General Theory of Algebras. Studies in Logic and the Foundations of Mathematics vol. 64. (SIGNED, PRESENTATION COPY FROM ALFRED TARSKI TO BJARNI JÓNSSON.)

Amsterdam & London: North-Holland, 1971. - vi, 508 pp. Original cloth. Very Good. Inscribed on the half-title by Tarski: 'To Bjarni Jónsson/ with warm regards from the authors/ Alfred Tarski.' Also signed by Henkin. An extraordinary association copy. Jónsson was Tarski's first student in the United States (Andrzej Mostowski was Tarski's only previous student in Poland). The Jónsson-Tarski duality takes its name from two papers they co-authored in 1951 and 1952. Fifty years after earning his Ph.D, Jónsson wrote in a 1995 letter to Anita Burdman Feferman: 'I have not yet thought of another person, living or dead whom I would rather have had as a teacher. . He combined an extraordinary mathematical ability with an outstanding talent as a communicator and a willingness to share his ideas with others' (Feferman & Feferman, Alfred Tarski: Life and Logic, p. 3). Jónsson 'signed up for an algebra course with no idea that Tarski, the instructor, was someone of international reputation: 'The subject matter was quite traditional, mostly matrix theory. He adhered to the course description in the text, but occasionally made allusions to other topics. At the beginning of the spring semester I asked if I could sign up for a reading course with him, and when he asked what subject I had in mind, I told him that he had mentioned set theory and the foundations of mathematics in class and that I would like to find out more about these. . He suggested that we start with set theory, beginning by reading Hausdorff's classic Mengenlehre. This opened up a whole new world for me.' Feferman & Feferman discuss Jónsson on pp. 3, 154, 155 [photo], 156, 158, 171, 191, 192, 195, 234 [group photo], 385, 393, 400, 401. Jónsson and Tarski co-wrote Direct Decompositions of Finite Algebraic Systems (1947), the appendix to Tarski's Cardinal Algebras (1949), and 'Boolean Algebras with Operators' (Amer. J. of Math., Vol. 73, 1951, pp. 891-939; Vol. 74, 1952, pp. 127-162). Jónsson also contributed an appendix to Tarski's Ordinal Algebras (1956). 'The axioms for relation algebras can account for the logic of only dyadic (binary, or two-placed) relations, and that only incompletely, whereas modern logic in general deals with polyadic (many-placed) relations. It was to put the latter in mathematical terms that in the late 1940s Tarski introduced the idea of cylindric algebras, so called because the operation of 'cylindrification' (projection on a component) on polyadic reactions corresponds to the logical operation of existential quantification; this approach was developed initially in collaboration with Louise Chin and Frederick B. Thompson and was to become a major subject of research in the Berkeley school. Those efforts would lead two decades later to the first part of an opus, Cylindric Algebras, authored by Tarski together with Leon Henkin and Donald Monk; the second part would not appear until after Tarski's death [in 1985]' (Ibid., p. 192). The 'major exposition of the subject . Tarski participated actively in the writing of all of Part I of Cylindric Algebras; his participation in the project after that was not active, though he was of course kept abreast of it all along the way' (Ibid., pp. 341-42). Jónsson is cited more times in the text than any other author (see pp. 50, 77, 82, 84, 94, 95, 98, 121, 141, 142, 158, 164, 175, 237, 315, 330, 356, 430, 431, 434, 436, 437, 441, 444, 473, 481, 482, 483).
