Cylindric Algebras. Part I. With an Introductory Chapter: General Theory of Algebras. Studies in Logic and the Foundations of Mathematics vol. 64. (SIGNED, PRESENTATION COPY FROM ALFRED TARSKI TO BJARNI JÓNSSON.)

Amsterdam & London: North-Holland, 1971. - vi, 508 pp. Original cloth. Very Good. Inscribed on the half-title by Tarski: 'To Bjarni Jónsson/ with warm regards from the authors/ Alfred Tarski.' Also signed by Henkin. An extraordinary association copy. Jónsson was Tarski's first student in the United States (Andrzej Mostowski was Tarski's only previous student in Poland). The Jónsson-Tarski duality takes its name from two papers they co-authored in 1951 and 1952. Fifty years after earning his Ph.D, Jónsson wrote in a 1995 letter to Anita Burdman Feferman: 'I have not yet thought of another person, living or dead whom I would rather have had as a teacher. . He combined an extraordinary mathematical ability with an outstanding talent as a communicator and a willingness to share his ideas with others' (Feferman & Feferman, Alfred Tarski: Life and Logic, p. 3). Jónsson 'signed up for an algebra course with no idea that Tarski, the instructor, was someone of international reputation: 'The subject matter was quite traditional, mostly matrix theory. He adhered to the course description in the text, but occasionally made allusions to other topics. At the beginning of the spring semester I asked if I could sign up for a reading course with him, and when he asked what subject I had in mind, I told him that he had mentioned set theory and the foundations of mathematics in class and that I would like to find out more about these. . He suggested that we start with set theory, beginning by reading Hausdorff's classic Mengenlehre. This opened up a whole new world for me.' Feferman & Feferman discuss Jónsson on pp. 3, 154, 155 [photo], 156, 158, 171, 191, 192, 195, 234 [group photo], 385, 393, 400, 401. Jónsson and Tarski co-wrote Direct Decompositions of Finite Algebraic Systems (1947), the appendix to Tarski's Cardinal Algebras (1949), and 'Boolean Algebras with Operators' (Amer. J. of Math., Vol. 73, 1951, pp. 891-939; Vol. 74, 1952, pp. 127-162). Jónsson also contributed an appendix to Tarski's Ordinal Algebras (1956). 'The axioms for relation algebras can account for the logic of only dyadic (binary, or two-placed) relations, and that only incompletely, whereas modern logic in general deals with polyadic (many-placed) relations. It was to put the latter in mathematical terms that in the late 1940s Tarski introduced the idea of cylindric algebras, so called because the operation of 'cylindrification' (projection on a component) on polyadic reactions corresponds to the logical operation of existential quantification; this approach was developed initially in collaboration with Louise Chin and Frederick B. Thompson and was to become a major subject of research in the Berkeley school. Those efforts would lead two decades later to the first part of an opus, Cylindric Algebras, authored by Tarski together with Leon Henkin and Donald Monk; the second part would not appear until after Tarski's death [in 1985]' (Ibid., p. 192). The 'major exposition of the subject . Tarski participated actively in the writing of all of Part I of Cylindric Algebras; his participation in the project after that was not active, though he was of course kept abreast of it all along the way' (Ibid., pp. 341-42). Jónsson is cited more times in the text than any other author (see pp. 50, 77, 82, 84, 94, 95, 98, 121, 141, 142, 158, 164, 175, 237, 315, 330, 356, 430, 431, 434, 436, 437, 441, 444, 473, 481, 482, 483).         Crow Wakes.

Woodford Green, Essex: printed by Alan Tarling for Poet & Printer,, 1971. Twelve Poems. Small octavo. Original vellum-backed patterned boards, titles to spine and front in black. Fine. First edition, first printing, signed and numbered by Hughes not once but twice, one of the scarce 100 copies retained by the poet. The title page verso is signed "No. 25 Ted Hughes" and the front free endpaper signed and numbered "Ted Hughes 43/88". The printer Alan Tarling informed the bibliographers Sagar and Tabor that "These poems were excluded for personal reasons from [Hughes's] Crow opus... There were 200, a hundred each going to poet and printer plus 30 review or academic copies. None of mine was signed and each cost £2.25, though I gave some to friends and relatives. All the 'academic' copies were gratis, and said as much in an extra colophon... I don't know how TH's copies were distributed or whether or not they were signed". Hughes had in fact numbered and signed his copies on the title page verso, but later apparently overlooked that he had done this and signed what were presumably his remaining copies from 1 to 88 on the front endpapers. The vice versa order of events is also possible

The Vantage Point Perspectives of the Presidency 1963-1969

Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York 1971 - Octavo, 636pp. Original red cloth bindings, printed title on spine and cover. Original dust jacket in good condition. Light foxing to fore edge. Inscribed by President Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson to Senator Ralph Yarborough on dedication page: "To Richard Yarborough / from his friend through the years - Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson / LBJ Library Dec 20, 1971." Provenance: Inscribed by Senator Yarborough opposite the inscription with the note: "20 Dec. 71 - Inscribed by President Johnson in my presence at LBJ Library. RWY." Senator Ralph Yarborough server in the Senate from 1957 through 1971. He was a Democratic Senator from Texas, with strong ties to former President Lyndon B. Johnson. He was with President Kennedy in Texas, during his November 1963 visit. He initially refused to ride with Vice President Johnson in the motorcade, forcing President Kennedy to have a "heated exchange" with Johnson, demanding that he get Yarborough in line. Johnson acquiesced and Yarborough was in the motorcade behind President Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963. Yarborough would go on to call that day in Dallas "the most tragic day of my life." In the 1964 senatorial election, he ran against future President George H.W. Bush, prevailing in the election and setting Bush on a path that would eventually lead him to the Presidency. He lost his seat in 1970 Lloyd Bentsen, returning to private life. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Democrat from Texas, he also served as a United States Representative and as the Majority Leader in the United States Senate. He became the Senate Minority Leader in 1953 and the Senate Majority Leader in 1955. As a leader in the Senate, Johnson became known for his domineering personality and the "Johnson treatment", his aggressive coercion of powerful politicians to advance legislation. Johnson ran for the Democratic nomination in the 1960 presidential election. Although unsuccessful, he accepted the invitation of then-Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts to be his running mate. Johnson designed the "Great Society" legislation by expanding civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, aid to education, the arts, urban and rural development, public services, and his "War on Poverty". However his legacy also includes the escalation of America's involvement in the Vietnam War, which blemished his otherwise progressive place in political history.Inscribees, Robert M. and Helen D. Jackson were neighbors of the Johnson's to their ranch in Stonewall, Texas. Robert was editor of the Caller Times in Corpus Christi, TX. Helen was the first woman reporter on the San Angelo Standard Times, and subsequently worked for the Associated Press in Washington D.C. The Robert M. Jackson Award for Scholarship in Journalism is available from the University of Texas, Austin. "I had used the power of the Presidency proudly, and I used every ounce of it I had. I used it to establish programs that gave thousands of youngsters a head start in school, that enabled thousands of old folks to live in clean nursing homes, that brought justice to the Negro and hope to the poor that forced the nation to face the growing problems of pollution. In this exercise of power, I knew a satisfaction that only a limited number of men have ever known and that I could have had in no other way." (p 433). Bright red cloth with titling blocked in blue on spine and a blue rectangle with LBJ's signature impressed on cover [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
