Einträgen, teils durchgestrichen auf Vorsatz u. Titel, sonst tadellose Exemplare. Lateinische Sprache. Hermann Conring (* 9. November 1606 in Norden (Ostfriesland); † 12.

[Watercolour drawing of a European, a Redimoesoe and several Maroon people in the Surinam jungle].[Surinam?, ca. 1805-1815]. Pencil, pen, wash and watercolour on wove paper (43.5 x 55.5 cm), in a passe-partout (58.5 x 69 cm).

On the Redimoesoe: De Groot, "Rebellie der Zwarte Jagers", in: De Gids CXXXIII (1970), pp. 291-303. High-quality watercolour drawing of an early 19th century scene at an unidentified location, probably in what was then the Dutch colony of Surinam. It shows a European man, armed with a sabre and a pistol, pointing with a cane to a dark-skinned man dressed in short trousers and a red cap. They are surrounded by several dark-skinned Maroons: runaway African slaves or their native descendants, who settled in remote jungle regions and often came into conflict with the colonial authorities. The man with the red cap is dressed as a member of the Black Rangers, a Dutch army corps composed of black slaves, which had been formed in 1772 to fight bands of runaway slaves. The rangers were a fierce fighting force, each of them said to be worth six Dutch soldiers, and nicknamed the Redimoesoes , due to the red caps they wore until 1815. In 1805, one year into a period of British rule, a detachment of Redimoesoes rebelled and fled to join the Maroon people of the Ndyuka and Aluku (Boni). The drawing may depict an event during this episode or its aftermath, as most of the figures appear to be members of one of the Maroon peoples. The large chests in the lower right could suggest some sort of trade, but whether the Redimoesoe is a part of this trade or is simply a background extra, is unclear. With a few tears at the edges repaired with tape; sheet lightly crumbled in the middle.

The Street Wall Journal; Vol. 1, Nos. 1-3; with: "Free New University Conference" poster, June 1970

New York: Committee to Defend the Panther 21, 1970. First edition. Some inconsequential wrinkles, a bit of offsetting at one edge; fine copies.. Four large folio leaves, approx. 17-1/2 X 22 in.; the additional poster somewhat larger. The complete set of three "Street Wall Journal" posters, issued in conjunction with the student strike at Columbia University in the spinrg of 1970, prostesting the the latest escalation of the Vietnam War and raising funds to aid in the defense of 21 members of the Black Panther Party facing conspiracy charges in New York. The posters mimic the look and format of the "Wall Street Journal" newspaper, and were meant to be ppsted around campus to inform syampathizers and raise awareness. Graphically striking, especially the third poster with its image of a shouting Panther raising a chained fist, each poster featured a banner headline: "Why We Strike", "Toward a General Strike", and "The Panthers: History as Repression...Repression as History". The fourth poster here is printed on two sides, one announcing the conference program, beginning June 15, 1970; the other side with four columns of text highlighting the range of grievances and summer protest actions at NYU.

Down Home With The Bailem County Kids

N.p.: S.i., [ca.early 1970's]. Paperback. A substantial and compelling work, anonymously-written and set in the fictitious Bailem County, Down Home With The Bailem County Kids is centered around the daily lives and adventures of a group of African-American kids, ranging in age from elementary to lower high school. The creator builds a realistic and detailed world around the characters, fusing elements reminiscent of Peanuts, The Little Rascals, Fat Albert, Archie, and Good Times. The fictitious setting comes across clearly as economically depressed, and the language used by the characters slips between being cogent and what one of the characters describes as "a Harlem Ghetto Accent." Prominent among the recurring characters are Bitty Beans and her best friend Dolly Stevens, friends Edith, Shirley, and Mablishka, along with boys Booful and Jim Bradshaw. The storyboards, in addition to chronicling the characters' daily lives and hijinks, deal with deeper issues and themes of African-American identity, class, prejudice, physical appearance, love, underage drinking, and corporal punishment. Violence, while dealt with in a light-hearted manner, is a recurring theme in each of the 11 stories, which involved Dolly Stevens doling out black eyes or getting others into fights. The most curious and visually dazzling story is "Zit the Magnificent," a 38-page tale composed in full color, involving a talking dog who performs with a traveling circus comprised of all Black performers. While authorship for this volume and place of publication are unattributed, given the recurring female characters, nature of their dialogue, and attention to detail regarding their style of dress, we suspect the cartoonist was a young woman, possibly high school or college-aged. In several stories, repeated references are made to traveling to or visiting "Rockston"; it is possible the city referenced is the town of Roxton, Texas (formerly Rockston or Rockstown), located some 18 miles southwest of Paris in Lamar County. Quarto (35.5cm); sketchbook bound in full black faux-leather; [232]pp. Fully-used, but for 20pp; inconsistently paginated by the artist, the volume contains 11 individually titled cartoon strips, composed in ballpoint pen, graphite, and colored felt-tipped marker, and told across 1,461 consecutively numbered panels. Spine, hinges, and right board edges reinforced with masking tape, some wear along upper and lower board edges, with some occasional shallow staining to text edges, none compromising legibility; Very Good+.
