BUTTURINI, Gian
Verona: Editrice SAF, 1969. Light handling creases to a couple of the interior pages along with some associated small nicks visible on adjoining pages, otherwise near fine in a near fine price-clipped jacket. Scarce, OCLC locates a single copy at the National Library of Australia.. First Edition. Large quarto. SIGNED and inscribed in Italian by Butturini. An incredible photobook capturing the seedier side of 1969 swinging London. Butturini's stark black and white images connect London's gritty street life with the emerging counterculture youth tribes in a photographic vision that is both Dickensian and modernist. The self-published book opens with a quote from Robert Capa and poetry by Allen Ginsberg; Italian texts by Butturini and Luciano Modini follow. Martin Parr credits the book as containing some of his favorite images of the capital, while Gerry Badger notes that the photography is "more Don McCullin than David Bailey" (Parr / Badger, v. 3, 154-155).

1969 First Edition. 1969 - Two original drawings in pencil and black ink, with watercolour samples at the edges, on paper. They measure 8"x10" & 6"x9.5". Both are signed. These sketches are possibly for illustrating the cover of the book Fontagre. One shows and elderly woman standing in a garden in front of a large house, on the reverse there is a sketch of a Romanesque headstone, in the undergrowth, with a bird in flight. The other shows a kneeling girl beside a boy, lying under a large cross, in a graveyard. Above them is a wreath, there is a blank space within, possibly for the title or blurb. THE OTHER EAST VILLAGE
New York, 1969. New York,, 1969.. Newspaper (410 by 300mm), 20pp., map of Woodstock to front cover. The East Village Other (often abbreviated as EVO), was an American underground newspaper in New York City, New York, issued biweekly during the 1960s. It was described by The New York Times as “a New York newspaper so countercultural that it made The Village Voice look like a church circular”. Published by Walter Bowart, EVO was among the first countercultural newspapers to emerge, following the Los Angeles Free Press, which had begun publishing a few months earlier. It was an important publication for the underground comix movement, featuring comic strips by artists including Robert Crumb, Kim Deitch, Trina Robbins, Spain Rodriguez, Gilbert Shelton and Art Spiegelman before underground comic books emerged from San Francisco with the first issue of Zap Comix. The present edition published August 13 1969, devotes the front cover and much of the contents to the famous Woodstock Festival of ‘69. This is how the BBC reported it at the time: Thousands of young people are heading home after three days and nights of sex, drugs and rock and roll at the Woodstock music festival. An estimated 400,000 youngsters turned up to hear big-name bands play in a field near the village of Bethel, New York state in what has become the largest rock concert of the decade. About 186,000 tickets were sold so promoters anticipated that around 200,000 would turn up. But on Friday night, the flimsy fences and ticket barriers had come down and organisers announced the concert was free prompting thou … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Poetry] Simic, Charles.
San Francisco:: Kayak Press,, 1969. San Francisco::: Kayak Press,,, 1969.. . A Near Fine copy with a tiny nick to one corner in bright cream colored paper wraps. Simic's 2nd Book, 1/1000 copies. There was no hardcover edition of this title. Simic's work defies easy categorization. Some poems reflect a surreal, metaphysical bent and others offer grimly realistic portraits of violence and despair. One reviewer maintained that memory—a taproot deep into European folklore—is the common source of all of Simic's poetry. Some of Simic's best-known works challenge the dividing line between the ordinary and extraordinary..

MILITARIA - VIENNA - SIEGE].
1969. Cf. ESTC R20817 (4 copies of the English translation); Wing P587 (5 copies the English edition); not in Apponyi, Hungarica . Flugschiften (1969); KVK & WorldCat; VD17. First edition of an extremely rare and possibly unique broadside (the only edition in the original German) printed and published near the end of the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna, apparently written by (and certainly based on fresh reports by) an eye-witness, published at the most desperate moment of the siege, less than two weeks before Imperial and Polish reinforcements arrived to rescue the city. The report gives background information beginning with the 1664 peace treaty and unsuccessful attempts to renew it in 1682. But it centres on the events unfolding at the time of publication. In addition to details about the progression of the troops, it gives information about the fortifications, about artillery used by both sides and it accuses the Ottomans of barbarous deeds and espionage. It discusses the roles of the Turks, Tatars, Transylvanians, Wallacians and Moldavians. It also reflects recent technological advances, such as the use of a telescope and the Ottoman use of powerful explosive mines to breach the heavily fortified city walls. The band of fleurons at the head of the broadside and the rule at the foot have been partly trimmed off, but the broadside is otherwise in good condition, only slightly tattered at the edges, with a couple creases in the paper and one or two very small holes and spots. Only copy located of an account of the Ottoman siege of Vienna published while it was still in progres … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hébert, and Le procès instruit et jugé au Tribunal Révolutionnaire contre Hébert et Consorts. This reprint was published in a limited edition of 230 copies, of which 30 were not destined for the trade. Jacques-René Hébert (1757-1794), member of the Paris Commune, dechristianizer, leader of the Paris sans-culottes. He began to publish the Père Duchesne in 1790 and it became the most popular of all the Revolutionary journals. The popularity of the journal rested on its author's unusual talent to speak the patois of the streets and the army camps. The journal was an accurate expression of the way the sans-culottes expressed themselves. Moreover, it taught them politics as seen through the eyes of the man who spoke as a Revolutionary democrat and expressed their needs and concerns. Hébert freely admitted that the journal was not written for 'des demoiselles' of his day. Moreover, its scurrilous language expressed the frustations and disappointments felt by the sans-culottes who had sacrificed so much but who had received so little in retu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bukowski, Charles, Neeli Cherry, and Harold Norse (editors)
Los Angeles: Laugh Literary , 1969. First Edition. Slim octavo (21.5cm); illustrated card wrappers, stapled; 32pp; illus. One of an unknown number of copies (this is copy no.12) signed by Bukowski, Cherry, and Norse in the month of publication, each contributing an original illustration next to their signature. Oxidation to staples and some trivial dustiness to wrappers, else very Near Fine. Premiere issue of this short-lived little magazine dedicated to poetry, prose, and artwork, intended as Bukowski's alternative to the Black Mountain Review. He despised the Black Mountain School, going so far as to reproduce the following manifesto on the cover of Issue No.1: "In Disgust with poetry Chicago, with the dull dumpling pattycake safe Creeley's, Olsons, Dickeys, Merwins, Nemerovs and Merediths - This is Issue # one volume one of Laugh Literary and Man the Humping Guns." Dorbin C438-439, E67.

Brooks, John
Weybright and Talley, New York. Although this copy is entirely bound in black cloth with apple green endpapers (just like the similarly sized trade editions) and states "Third printing, February, 1969" to copyright page, the absence of any price from the (unclipped) jacket front flap, and the presence of a small, square deboss to bottom of rear board at spine, tell us this is in fact a book-club edition. Author Brooks, who wrote regularly for the New Yorker (where all of these pieces first appeared, albeit "in different form"), here gives us 50 pp. on the fate of the Ford Edsel (presumably condensed from his earlier, 1963 book of that title), with additional chapters on the rise of Xerox; on David Lilienthal; on the price-rigging of industrial transformers and generators by Westinghouse, GE, and others (as revealed to the public by Sen. Estes Kefauver); on the weird social and economic distortions caused by the intricacies of the federal income tax, etc. Business. 399 pp. including index. [Attributes: Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
