Pierre Bastien
… [Click Below for Full Description]

Angelou, Maya
New York: Random House, 1969-2002. First editions, first issues of each volume in Angelou's acclaimed autobiography series. Octavo, 6 volumes. Each are either signed or inscribed by Maya Angelou. Fine in near fine to fine dust jackets. An exceptional set, uncommon in this condition and signed. "This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts of all black men and women... I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved... Her portrait is a biblical study in life in the midst of death" (James Baldwin).

[MILITARIA - VIENNA - SIEGE].
Cf. ESTC R20817 (4 copies of the English translation); Wing P587 (5 copies the English edition); not in Apponyi, Hungarica ... Flugschiften (1969); KVK & WorldCat; VD17. First edition of an extremely rare and possibly unique broadside (the only edition in the original German) printed and published near the end of the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna, apparently written by (and certainly based on fresh reports by) an eye-witness, published at the most desperate moment of the siege, less than two weeks before Imperial and Polish reinforcements arrived to rescue the city. The report gives background information beginning with the 1664 peace treaty and unsuccessful attempts to renew it in 1682. But it centres on the events unfolding at the time of publication. In addition to details about the progression of the troops, it gives information about the fortifications, about artillery used by both sides and it accuses the Ottomans of barbarous deeds and espionage. It discusses the roles of the Turks, Tatars, Transylvanians, Wallacians and Moldavians. It also reflects recent technological advances, such as the use of a telescope and the Ottoman use of powerful explosive mines to breach the heavily fortified city walls. The band of fleurons at the head of the broadside and the rule at the foot have been partly trimmed off, but the broadside is otherwise in good condition, only slightly tattered at the edges, with a couple creases in the paper and one or two very small holes and spots. Only copy located of an account of the Ottoman siege of Vienna published while it was still in progress.

[Click Below for Full Description]
