BUTTURINI, Gian
Verona: Editrice SAF. First Edition. Large quarto. SIGNED and inscribed in Italian by Butturini. An incredible photobook capturing the seedier side of 1969 swinging London. Butturini's stark black and white images connect London's gritty street life with the emerging counterculture youth tribes in a photographic vision that is both Dickensian and modernist. The self-published book opens with a quote from Robert Capa and poetry by Allen Ginsberg; Italian texts by Butturini and Luciano Modini follow. Martin Parr credits the book as containing some of his favorite images of the capital, while Gerry Badger notes that the photography is "more Don McCullin than David Bailey" (Parr / Badger, v. 3, 154-155). Light handling creases to a couple of the interior pages along with some associated small nicks visible on adjoining pages, otherwise near fine in a near fine price-clipped jacket. Scarce, OCLC locates a single copy at the National Library of Australia. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

THEK, Paul; KLEIN, Edwin
Amsterdam: Stedelijk Museum/Moderna Museet, , 1969. Brossura (wrappers). Molto Buono (Very Good). Folio (cm 41x31). pp. 130. Molto Buono (Very Good). Prima edizione (First Edition). During the 1960's and early 70's, the maverick American artist Paul Thek (1933-88) and a group of friends worked collaboratively in Europe, calling themselves the Artist's Co-op. They were invited to produce installations, including one at Documenta 5, and moved from gig to gig like a rock group, sharing expenses, sleeping bags, drugs and ideas, often camping out in museums as they assembled multimedia environments of fabulous beauty from their individual work and everyday things: newspapers, vegetables, bathroom tissues. Art and lifestyle were one thing. Janos Gat has a modest souvenir of such collaborations in a series of photographs made by Thek and the artist Edwin Klein in 1969 as they prepared for an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The pictures are basically still lifes of random objects -- ''whatever was lying around,'' Mr. Klein recalls in a terrific little catalog -- arranged on a double page of The International Herald Tribune. The contents include museum postcards, pornographic magazines, Polaroids of the artists at work, mushrooms, cigarette butts, hyacinth blossoms, wine bottles. From picture to picture, things high and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Habicht, Frank
London: Harrap & Co. 1969. First edition. Large quarto. Fine in near fine dustjacket with a bit of wear to the edge of the front flap. This copy was used evidently used as a mock up for the soon to be published book of the same title. Several of the photos reproduced here are repeated due to the insertion of multiple similar signatures. A few of the text leaves are blank. Laid in is correspondence concerning the publication costs and offers to the two writers of the monographs which accompanied the book. One letter (typed) from Fred Honig, possibly the publisher's agent to Paul Harrap the eventual publisher and another (three page typed and signed on onion skin paper with some ink notations) from Harrap to Milton Gladstone of Arco Publishing in New York City, who were probably the eventual printers of the book. Both letters are stapled. Also laid in are the galleys of the books text in addition to paper samples used in the books production. Also included is a folded and edgeworn silver gelatin contact print of the books final selection of photos which are numbered in sequence. A possibly unique preview of an otherwise scarce book which attempted to present the mod London of the 1960's

Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear to the extremities. Jacket design by Tom Lincoln. Ayn Rand argues that objective standards in art are possible because art is not a subjective luxury, but rather a critical need of human life—not a material need, but a need of man’s rational mind, the faculty on which his material survival depends. The Romantic Manifesto takes its place beside The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged as one of the most important achievements of our time. Debord, Guy, ed
Paris: Internationale Situationniste, 1969. First edition. First editions. 8vo, each issue saddle-stapled in metallic wraps. All issues published of the central periodical of the Situationist International, including the rare first edition of the second issue. All issues published of the main periodical of the Situationist International, with the rarely seen first edition of the second number. The fragile foil covers used on this number largely perished in the printing process, and the issue was not widely seen until it was reset and reiussed four years later with minor differences in design and typography. The reflective covers of the journal was the only element of the periodical which remained constant across the issues. The reflective covers were produced with great expense and occasional peril, exemplified by the heatpocked and effaced cover of the second issue present here, the title and number largely effaced and the foil looking oddly like the cover of the moon. The importance the IS assigned to the metallic covers is underlined by the fact that most readers woudn't read this issue until it was re-issued four yours later. The presence of the original no. 2 in this set exemplifies the extent to which the IS reified the materiality of the periodical, despite Debord's evolving theoretical stances against the art world. Arguably the most important periodical of the 1960's, and a hall of mirrors still being reckoned with. The second number shows considerable wear, as the few surviving copies tend to do, with chipping to margins and most of the printing on covers … [Click Below for Full Description]

Anny de Decker / Wide White Space. Published in an edition of 250 copies. Byars began the first draft of this book in April, 1969, at Wide White Space, Antwerp. For Byars's first solo exhibition, the director, Anny de Decker, renamed the gallery the 'Institute for the Advanced Study of James Lee Byars'. As the printed colophon states: "This book was written by James Lee Byars while on display in April 1969 at W.W.S. Antwerp". For the performance _ an Autobiography of James Lee Byars the artist wrote the autobiography of the first half of his life (Byars was then 37 years old, about half the average male lifespan at the time, and thus thought it appropriate to write half of his autobiography), and presented the work at the gallery, which was painted entirely pink for the occasion. The visitors, who had to take off their shoes, could go and see Byars behind an opening in the wall, where he gave them a few lines of his writings. After the exhibition, this book was produced out of a further 200 pages the artist had written on. It was his first artist's book. [Ref. James Lee Byars. Bücher-Editionen-Ephemera, Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen, no. 1; Anne Moeglin-Delcroix - Esthétique du livre d'artiste, 1960/1980, p. 329]. Printed in offset lithography in black on pink paper. Artist's handwriting reproduced in facsimile throughout. Pink wrappers, with title printed in black on spine. Uneven staining to the covers and mild creasing. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Nabokov, Vladimir
New York: McGraw-Hill, 1969. First edition. Proof copy of the first edition. Mustard-colored printed wrappers, spine slightly faded but an excellent copy of this scarce, bulky, and fragile item, not likely to survive beyond a single reading. Juliar describes two copies, the second identical to the first, only lacking the preliminary page which surely fell out. Juliar E40.1.

Debord, Guy, dir
Paris: Internationale Situationniste, 1969. 8vo, unpaginated, saddle-stapled in printed wraps. Text in French. The IS issued a small number of the the final issue of the periodical in these fictitious covers, for covert distribution to help avoid censors in Eastern Europe and elsewhere. Another fictitious cover was designed for issue no. 10 as well. By 1969 the metallic covers had become so closely identified with the journal that there is a strong sense of dissonance opening the drab covers of this edition to find the IS title page. The almost impossibly drab design and tongue-in-cheek tone of the text seem to be a wink at the knowing reader, while simultaneously being persuasive enough to bore even the most diligent censor or border agent into not flipping open the book. There would be no further issues of the journal, but the back cover of this edition prints a curious promise: "Un numéro spécial de notre revue paraîtra en février 1970 wui sera consacré au compte-rendu par l'équipe du Professeur Riseau-Lebel de l'expédition de recherches sur la fosse 74 de Meni-Montang (Indonésie). Nos abonnés recevront automatiquement ce numéro spécial." Rare. Very good with some slight staining to wraps.

Rand, Ayn
The World Publishing Company, New York, 1969. First edition of this collection of essays regarding the nature of art. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Ayn Rand on the half-title page.
