Fowles, John
Jonathan Cape, London, 1969. First edition of the Fowles' third novel. Octavo, original brown cloth, pictorial endpapers. Signed by both John Fowles and Harold Pinter on the title page. Pinter wrote the screenplay for the 1981 film bearing the same name. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. An excellent near fine example in a very good dust jacket with light rubbing. Endpaper drawing by Tom Adams. Rare and desirable signed by both Fowles and Pinter. Possibly the most beloved of Fowles's internationally bestselling works, The French Lieutenant's Woman is a feat of seductive storytelling that effectively invents anew the Victorian novel. "Filled with enchanting mysteries and magically erotic possibilities" (New York Times). It was the basis for the 1981 British romantic drama film directed by Karel Reisz, produced by Leon Clore, and adapted by playwright Harold Pinter. The music score is by Carl Davis and the cinematography by Freddie Francis. The film stars Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. Other featured actors include Hilton McRae, Peter Vaughan, Colin Jeavons, Liz Smith, Patience Collier, Richard Griffiths, David Warner, Alun Armstrong, Penelope Wilton, and Leo McKern. It is universally regarded as a modern classic. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

[London:] Times Literary Supplement, 31 July 1969. [London:] Times Literary Supplement,, 31 July 1969. Broadside, printed recto in black. Housed in a black box frame, glazed with UV-protective glass: 67 x 40 cm. Together with manila mailing envelope, addressed from Alan Hancox Fine Books, Cheltenham to Phoenix Bookshop, New York, attached to the rear of the frame, dated 2 February 1970. Portrait of Plath in black and white. Uniformly toned, slightly creased from folding, tiny puncture affecting two letters, closed tear along crease at bottom of leaf. In excellent condition. Galley proof of the first printing of five of Plath's previously unpublished poems, comprising: "Complaint of the Crazed Queen"; "Battle-scene from the comic operatic fantasy The Seafarer"; "Dialogue en route"; "Letter to a Purist"; and "Dream of the Hearse Driver". It seems to have been common practice to provide authors or their agents with pulls for approval before final publication, and this pull was likely given to Ted Hughes. It was later sold by Alan Hancox of Cheltenham, a bookseller who was particularly close to Hughes and sold material obtained directly from him. Rare: just three other copies traced in OCLC.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Ondaatje, Michael
(Toronto): Coach House Press, 1969. First edition of the author's second substantial book, a collection of poetry. Oblong 12mo, orange cloth, grey endpapers. A fine, bright copy. The grey jacket is lightly sunned to margins of panels and to upper and lower margin of flaps, else fine. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Addtionally inscribed by the author to a noted Canadian book collector. A stated edition of 300 numbered copies, this is # 1, hand numbered. (There is good reason to believe there were actually more than 300 copies, perhaps as many as 500, though it does appear that only the first 300 were numbered, and the first 50 were signed as well). A long poem that Michael O. doesn't like any more and will not allow to be reprinted. Only this first printing is in hardcover, subsequent printings being issued in paper covers. Binding: Hardcover.
