Anthony, Piers
1969. Geis was a prolific writer of soft-core pornographic novels, which for many years was his main source of income. As a hobby, he published several fanzines, the best-known of which was Science Fiction Review (SFR). According to the Fancyclopedia 3, Geis's various fanzines were among the most influential in science fiction in the 1960s and 1970s. Geis was nominated for 30 Hugos in the fanzine category and won thirteen. This archive consists of 19 typed notes and letters, signed (TNS and TLS), and 6 typescripts by Anthony, plus 10 carbons of letters from Geis to Anthony. Most of Anthony's letters are densely typed, with narrow margins. The paper is often low quality and tanned. All items are ribbon copies, unless noted. Many of the letters have lines in the margin made by Geis, perhaps for editorial purposes. Many of the letters were written as Letters of Comment (LoC), intended for publication. The archive consists of: 1) July 8, 1969. 5 pp. TLC, written as an LoC, a wide-ranging commentary on science fiction novels and publishing. In it, Anthony describes himself as "one of the youngest and turkiest of the young turks." 2) December 20, 1969. 4 pp. TLS LoC. 3) February 10, 1970. 2 pp. TLS Chatty letter mentioning a dispute with Ballantine Books. 4) April 12, 1970. 2 pp TLS on one sheet. About sending Anthony's archive to Syracuse University. 5) May 31, 1970. 2 pp. TLS on one sheet. Chatty letter on books and science fiction gossip. 6) July 2, 1970. 3 pp. TLS LoC complaining about a bad review of Anthony's novel Macroscope in SFR. 7) October 18 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fluxus - Maciunas, George
New York: Privately Printed, 1969. Single sheet, double-sided printed poster. Measures 17 x 22" long. According to information from the Silverman archive, "Flux Fest Kit 2 was the second collection of Fluxus scores and festival information. The first was Fluxfest Sale. More than a lecture bureau's guide to Fluxus, anyone could use it to put on their own Fluxfest, and, if funds were available, order objects, buy films, rent a fluxorchestra, or even hire Fluxus artists to perform. Some of the scores reproduced are complete, others are abbreviated descriptions of scores." Some of the many particpants in this series of events included George BRecht, George Maciunas, Bici Hendricks and others. Condition of this rare poster is very good with a few small tears at folds. William Blake
London: Printed at the Trianon Press for the Trustees of the William, 1969. Condition: ___ Volume is in fine condition, with clean covers that have a hint of sun-toning to backstrip, internally bright and free of prior owner markings, text block is tight and square, corners are mostly straight, with the top corners slightly bumped; slipcase is near fine with some minor rubbing to head and tail (slightly bumped at tail); overall very clean, a fine example. Number 313 of 480, folio size, unpaginated [17 plates and 6 pp. of commentary]. "Europe, A Prophecy" was printed in Lambeth before and during 1795, and is one of Blake's prophetic books, part of the expansive world mythology Blake envisioned, that included Creation and the first eighteen centuries of the Christian era. Though written later, it includes an early portion of that mythos which was first presented in "America". "Europe" contains one of Blake's most well known illustrations, known as "The Ancient of Days" depicting Urizen, the creator/God figure, drawing the first circle of the earth with a golden compass. William Blake (1757 - 1827) is arguably the most original and highly-regarded English author - unusual in that he excelled both as an author and an artist. Although thought mad by his contemporaries, he was held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work. Blake's work has been spectacularly reproduced through the pochoir technique by Arnold Fawkus and his Trianon Press, which has an undeniable claim to being the finest press of its kind in t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sue Grafton
The Lolly-Madonna War by Sue Grafton. Published by Peter Owen in 1969. This is a first edition hardcover book with dust jacket and measures about 7 1/2" x 5" with 189 pages. First British Commonwealth Edition is stated on the copyright page and the original price of 35s is on the dust jacket flap, which for this publisher means it is a first edition. Kurt Vonnegut
Delacorte Press, New York, 1969. First Edition, First Printing of the author's masterpiece. Signed by Kurt Vonnegut directly on the half-title page. Loosely laid in is a cutout from the return mailer bearing Vonnegut's handwritten return address in NYC. Fine in a near fine dust jacket in archival protective cover. Arguably Vonnegut's most famous and influential novel. It was nominated for both the Nebula and the Hugo Awards, in science fiction. Nonetheless, as a loser, it still made both the Modern Library and the Time Magazine lists for the best English-language novels written in the 20th century. "Slaughterhouse-Five, perhaps Vonnegut's most powerful novel, presents two characters who can see beneath the surface to the tragic realities of human history but make no attempt to bring about change. The central event is the destruction of Dresden by bombs and fire storm--a catastrophe that Vonnegut himself witnessed as a prisoner of war". "Kurt Vonnegut knows all the tricks of the writing game. So he has not even tried to describe the bombing. Instead he has written around it in a highly imaginative, often funny, nearly psychedelic story. The story is sandwiched between an autobiographical introduction and epilogue" (The New York Times). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

D.A. Levy
Quixote Press, Madison, WI, 1969. Two variant copies of d.a. levy's The Madison Poems. Envelope with screenprinted cover. Contains 12 loose leaves, 24-page collection of poems, also includes 35 page edition of the poems with collages. D.A. Levy was born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 2, 1942 and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on November 24, 1968. An iconic small press publisher and poet, during the 1960s he prolifically produced handmade publications, and along with publishers like Ed Sanders, helped to define the aesthetic of the Mimeo Revolution. Founding Renegade Press in 1963 he printed and edited journals like the Marrahwanna Review and the Buddhist Third Class Junk Mail Oracle, along with discrete work by himself, poets like Ed Sanders and D.R. Wagner. Throughout his short tenure in publishing he experimented widely with format, typography, printing, and collage, consistently defying the specialization of media. One of the truly great artist-poets of the 1960s, Levy's unclassifiable work and intense spiritual striving embody the subversive spirit of a time which he came to embody. The Madison Poems, offered here in two editions, is a group of work produced by Levy during a period of time he spent at the University of Wisconsin as "The free university Poet-in Residence." Assembled after his death by those who knew him, it provides perhaps the best retrospective anthology of Levi's work, created in his own signature style, as a sort of assemblage visual and textual work. Along with collages, each edition contains an introductory essay by David Wagner, who desc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tomi Ungerer's illustrations, for a time, helped define Madison Ave. His work appeared in Esquire, Life, Harper's Bazaar, The Village Voice and The New York Times. He drew the iconic Dr. Strangelove movie poster. "Tomi influenced everybody," said his friend and author/illustrator, Maurice Sendak. "No one, I dare say, no one was as original as Tomi Ungerer." His distinct form of simple line drawing practically screams "the Sixties." Ungerer drew political cartoons, illustrated iconic childrens books, such as Flat Stanley as well as drawing darkly pornographic artwork based around sadomasochistic themes. Cildo Campos Meireles
Np: The Artist. Condition: Fine. Signed in plate by the artist. 2 5/8 x 6 1/8" sheet, offset lithograph. Beginning in 1969, Meireles began his Árvore do dinheiro series, which appropriated currencies in order to question their relationship between national identity, exchange value, inflation, materiality and representation, all called into sharp relief by reducing the value of these printed objects to zero. One of the most potent art projects of its time, and one which has increasing and not yet fully understood reproductions in our time as we hurtle towards a zero marginal cost society. Fine. Van Riebeeck Society (publishers)
(Cape Town: The Van Riebeeck Society, 1918-1969). Fifty 8vo volumes, bound in the characteristic pale grey buckram, lettered in dark blue on the spines, and with the Society's device in dark blue to the upper cover in each case. Some flecking, stippling and light wear to the cloth in several volumes, a few of which have a faint damp-stain to the fore-edges of the boards; ownership hand-stamps or inscriptions to front endpapers in some volumes; moderate foxing in some of the books, others completely unfoxed. Overall, a good to very good complete compilation of the First Series. During the period of the First Series, the Society, which has few parallels worldwide (the Hakluyt Society being one noteworthy example) remained true to its foundation aim of publishing "primary sources in southern African history, which were inaccessible to the average South African." Several of the volumes are now exceedingly elusive. "Thus the Van Riebeeck Society was born, and on 29 August 1918 an inaugural meeting was held in the South African Library. Only fifteen people were present. A sign of the times is that no less than four of those present were titled. At this meeting, with Mr Merriman in the chair, Mr Jagger proposed that the Library's publication funds of 'some £160' should be handed over to the Van Riebeeck Society 'for the publication of South African Historical Documents'. It was decided that the annual subscription be ten shillings and life membership '£5 or more'. The first publication was to be the De Chavonnes and Van Imhoff already prepared for the press. The object of the Soci … [Click Below for Full Description]
