KLOSSOWSKI Pierre (BEJART Maurice)
Paris: KLOSSOWSKI Pierre (BEJART Maurice), 1969. Handwritten letter signed by the writer Pierre Klossowski addressed to Maurice Bejart, dated 5 August 1969.58 lines written in black ink on three leaves.Interesting letter regarding choreographer Maurice Bejart's project to adapt Klossowski's Baphomet into a ballet.Klossowski had met Maurice Bejart through a mutual friend, the writer and film maker Francois Weyergans. The idea of a ballet based on Klossowski's book Le Baphomet was born out of this meeting. This medieval baroque tale, published four years earlier, recounted the mystical vicissitudes and the religious divides of the Templar. The writer, obsessed by the project, confided his doubts about such an undertaking, which seemed impossible to achieve due to the many pitfalls: "Plus je m'evertue à esquisser quelques ebauches de synopsis, et plus surement je m'egare [...] je n'arrive pas à sortir d'une visualisation theâtrale" "The more I strive to sketch out the draft of the synopsis, the more I lose my way [...] I am not able to escape a theatrical visualisation." There are fascinating passages questioning the relative permeability between the literary text and the ballet scene: "Il me semble maintenant que c'est non point le tableau mais la trame verbale - le mouvement de la parole et ses developpements qui offriraient les elements des figures que seul votre genie puisse reinventer à sa guise !" "It now seems to me that it is not the visual picture but the verbal thread - the movement of the words and their developments that would present the characteristics of the cha … [Click Below for Full Description]

Winston S. Churchill
Joan of Arc Winston S. Churchill New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1969 First and only edition, in dust jacket Condition: Fine Jacket Condition: Very Good plus This interesting little book is excerpted from Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. On 29 December 1938, Churchill wrote to his wife regarding his initial draft about this part of his history: "I have just finished writing about Joan of Arc. I think she is the winner in the whole of French history. The leading women of these days were more forceful and remarkable than the men." Profusely illustrated, this slim volume contains 17 illustrations by the distinguished artist Lauren Ford. Though 16 of these illustrations had previously been published as black and white drawings, this is their first appearance in color. The illustration on the dust jacket front cover and frontispiece is original to this edition. This little-known edition is scarce and thus missing from many collections. Many of the copies that do come on the market are ex-library with attendant flaws, very often including library stickers or writing on the spine. This is a collector-worthy copy. It is not ex-library, but instead truly fine in a very good plus dust jacket. The white cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to soiling and signs of use. Here the binding is immaculate - square and tight with sharp corners, bright gilt, and no soiling or wear. The contents are likewise pristine - crisp and bright with no previous ownership markings or spotting. The book feels unread. Even the text block edges are bright and clean. Frank Herbert
Dune Messiah Frank Herbert New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1969 First edition, first printing Condition: Very Good plus Jacket Condition: Very Good plus This is the first edition, first printing of the sequel to Dune. In this second novel in the original Dune trilogy, now-emperor Paul Maud'Dib Atreides struggles to control the jihad which made him emperor and to navigate the complex interplay of byzantine, exotic institutional forces that consolidate and contest power in the Dune universe. The novel culminates with the terrible concessions that ensure succession of his line. This first edition, first printing is very good plus in a very good plus dust jacket. The dark tan binding is tight and clean with sharp corners and perfect black print on the spine and front cover. We note negligible forward lean and trivial wear to the spine ends and corners. The contents are clean with a crisp feel, no spotting, and no previous owner markings apart from "$4.95" (the original publisher's price) ink-stamped on the front free endpaper. The dust jacket is bright and complete, unfaded and retaining the original "$4.95" price on the upper front flap. We note light wear to extremities, mostly confined to spine ends and corners, and just a hint of soiling to the rear face. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival protector. Half a century after it was published, Dune continues to be regarded among the greatest science fiction novels. The Dune universe endures and prospers, Dune having seen a total of five sequel novels written by Herbert in his lifetime, followed by a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Each volume hand-printed, from hand-set types upon the finest papers, & hand-sewn. 125 copies printed, of which 99 were numbered and 26 were lettered A-Z; these are all copy No. 22 of the numbered edition. All booklets and notes are in fine condition and deservedly housed in a beautifully crafted tray-case hand-made by master bookbinder, Gray Parrot. Copies were sold as complete sets only, by subscription. This set was retained by the publisher, Roy Squires, who commissioned the solander box to house these copies. The the first separate publication of these prose poems that originally appeared in BEYOND THE WALL OF SLEEP [Arkham House, 1944]. NB: There is no difference between the26 lettered and the numbered copies, Squires reserved the 26 lettered copies to give out to friends and to help promote his press. It should be noted that while it was possible for subscribers to the series to purchase boxes for their sets, very, very few would have been commissioned; it should also be noted that despite Squire's fabulous contribution to the art of Specialty Small Press Publishing and his promotion of the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith (amongst others), these are the only true first editions by H.P. Lovecraft which Squires published. 4 Volumes in original wrappers with solander case. BOLAN, Marc.
Glam Rock Poetry.BOLAN, Marc. The Warlock of Love. Lupus Music, 1969.8vo. Original decorative paper-covered boards, with dustwrapper; pp. 63; slightly rubbed to extremities, internally very clean and bright, very good. Provenance: ffep inscribed by Marc Bolan "Deepest love/ Marc Bolan/ x", with ownership signature of Jeannette Montgomery above.First edition. Scarce.Heavily inspired by Tolkien, this book of poetry was issued before Bolan hit international superstardom with T. Rex. Nevertheless, he was a big enough domestic star to sell 40,000 copies of this book, which was quickly reprinted and became Britain's biggest selling volume of poetry of the year. There is a nod to his band in the very last lines of the last poem in the book : "And now where once stood solid water/ stood the reptile king,/ Tyrannosaurus Rex, reborn and bopping". This may be the first time a dinosaur has ever been described in such rock'n'roll terms.#2102373

Shomei TOMATSU
Tokyo: Shaken, 1969. Condition: Light crease to the bottom edge of the front cover, a small internal crease near the spine heel, three small tape shadows on the inner front cover, still close to near fine in photo-illustrated wrappers. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Tomatsu's most political book, with the famous, searing image of a missile launching sandwiched between graphic slogans demanding the end to American occupation of the island. Like most of Tomatsu's books, Okinawa is difficult to categorize. It borrows stylistically from the Provoke school while never losing its focus as a social documentary, yet it would be overly simplistic to lump it in with other Japanese protest books, even those about Okinawa. Collective
10.21 Publishing committee, Tokyo, 1969. 8vo, Unpaginated (ca 96pp). Printed wraps. Numerous Black & White plates. Text in Japanese. A little rubbed, with some loss to spine. Student created book documenting protests and rallies during 1967 and 1968 and taking it's name from Anti Vietnam protests on 21st October 1966. The book serves as an accidental provoke classic. Almost all of the photographs were taken by the students themselves, often at night, and in difficult circumstances, meaning the aesthetic of 'are, bure, boke' is omnipresent. To avoid legal complications there are no credits and no faces are clearly shown, and a handy reference is present at the rear of the book detailing which protests took place where and when. The book is almost an object of found photography, were it not for it's strong political purpose. Possible one of the most poignant protests books to emerge from Japan.
