Watson, James D.
Readers Union / Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1969. Hardcover. Octavo size, 143 pp., signed by James D. Watson. Near Fine / Very Good. The desire to understand the chemical makeup of living things was in full force during the 1950s, epitomised in the work of scientists James D. Watson (b. 1928) and Francis Crick (1916-2004), credited with the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, for which Watson and Crick, along with Maurice Wilkins, jointly won the Nobel Prize in 1962; this work is detailed in Watson's memoir "The Double Helix". The memoir was unusual at the time, as personal accounts of scientific discoveries were uncommon; the memoir sparked controversy over Watson's willingness to use other scientists' data, possibly without their knowledge, to form his conclusions, and for his somewhat disparaging attitude toward Dr Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958), whose work on X-ray diffraction was vital to the discovery of the shape of DNA. This volume was published one year after the first edition of Watson's book, with this copy signed by him on the title page; the book today is still considered one of the seminal writings about a critical scientific discovery. ___DESCRIPTION: Full black cloth, gilt lettering on the spine, severl black-and-white illustrations and diagrams of DNA strands and molecules, six facsimile pages of a letter to Max Delbürck (1906-1981), a biophysicist influential on Watson and Crick's work, regarding the double helix at the back of the book; octavo size (8.25" by 5"), pagination: [i-iv] v-viii 1-128 [129-135], signed by James D. CATULLUS; Celia & Louis Zukofsky, trans.
London: Cape Goliard Press, 1969. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles gilt to spine. With the dust jacket, and the publisher's textured red card slipcase. A near fine copy. First Zukofsky edition of Catullus, this the publisher's copy inscribed for him by the Zukofskys under their preface, "Tom Maschler's copy as ever, Celia Zukofsky, Louis Zukofsky [in his hand], May 20, 1969". These translations are a significant feature of the experimental output of American poet Louis Zukofsky, who with his wife Celia managed to execute an extraordinary set of homophonic translations, communicating in English more the sound than the sense of Catullus's Latin original (printed here in facing text throughout). Zukofsky dedicates one poem to Ezra Pound, and another to Basil Bunting. Maschler was the head of Jonathan Cape, and a hugely influential figure in 20th-century literature: he had a particular genius for bringing world-class writers from abroad (such as Neruda, García Marquez, and Derek Walcott) to publish in the UK, and 15 of his authors were awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He additionally has the honour of conceiving the Booker Prize, and of having introduced his friend Quentin Blake to Roald Dahl. His Blake-designed bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown. Bobby Fischer
Simon and Schuster, 1969. Hardcover. ****AN EXTRAORDINARY PIECE OF CHESS HISTORY**** AND ONE OF THE TOWERING ASSOCIATION COPIES IN THE GAME'S VAST LITERATURE. WARMLY inscribed (in itself very unusual) by the newly-minted World Champion to William Lombardy, Bobby Fischer's "second" at Reyjavik and the man widely credited with convincing an overwrought Fischer to move forward and play the match. As with most of Fischer's relationships, his friendship with Lombardy was complicated and experienced many highs and lows. But the fact remains that Lombardy played a major role as coach and mentor in Fischer's development as a world-class player and provided much-needed stability during Bobby's early years. Fully aware of Fischer's tight-fisted ways, Lombardy was understandably looking for compensation for the time and toil he had invested in the Fischer-Spassky match and he set his sights on this historic copy of "My 60 Memorable Games". By making sure that he could secure Bobby's very first signature as World Champion --and in an expressive, personalized inscription no less-- he understood that he would own a piece of chess immortality, a physcial talisman for the ages. To further mark the significance of the signing, Lombardy verified in his own hand that this indeed was Fischer's first signature as World Champion and he even had Saemi Palsson (Fischer's bodyguard and the Chief of the Reyjavik Police Department) sign this copy as well as a witness to history. On top of the remarkable history attached to it, this copy is also a very solid example of the 1969 stated 1st printing. Cl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Yves Thos & Jouineau Bourduge
Printed in France by St Martin, Paris, 1969. Dimensions: 123 x 47 in. (312 x 119 cm.) Backed on linen George Lazenby made his only appearance as James Bond in EON Productions On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the sixth in the series and the first following Sean Connery's retirement from the role after You Only Lice Twice. Designed for the French release, Yves Thos and Jouineau Bourduge's striking illustration of the suave secret agent clutching a pair of skis with his signature martini and Walther PPK hints at the snowy stunts filmed on location in Switzerland, as Bond chases the evil Blofeld. Popular with the ski set, this mammoth poster has previously sold for as much as £3,500 at Christie's auction house in London. Very good (B+ to A-)Backed on linen. Issued on 2 sheets, this poster had a total of three vertical and five horizontal machine folds prior to backing, with wear to folds and minor loss to crossfolds, one 4 ½ in. vertical tear from upper horizontal fold to right of skis, and printers ink transfer to white ground in places. Backed in the european style with no restoration whatsoever, backing has smoothed out the folds and improved the appearance for display. Image and colours excellent.

The Beach Boys
Los Angeles: 1969. Original, 3 page, handwritten, working manuscript for The Beach Boys' Soulful Old Man Sunshine, composed by Brian Wilson and Rick Henn. 1 page of lyrics (8 1/2" X 11"), 2 pages of music (9 1/2" X 12 1/2"), both handwritten in black ink, and a contemporaneous printed lead sheet for the track (9 1/2" X 13"). All the writing is by Henn (thus the price). No other concurrent drafts, by Wilson or Henn, are recorded. A few creases and signs of age, a staple hole at an upper corner of the lyric sheet, else very good. Recorded in November 1969, but its release was delayed at the insistence of lead singer Carl Wilson who missed a word in his vocal. It was finally issued, 29 years later, on the band's 1998 Endless Harmony Soundtrack compilation. Very good.

Shomei TOMATSU
Tokyo: Shaken, 1969. Condition: Light crease to the bottom edge of the front cover, a small internal crease near the spine heel, three small tape shadows on the inner front cover, still close to near fine in photo-illustrated wrappers. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Tomatsu's most political book, with the famous, searing image of a missile launching sandwiched between graphic slogans demanding the end to American occupation of the island. Like most of Tomatsu's books, Okinawa is difficult to categorize. It borrows stylistically from the Provoke school while never losing its focus as a social documentary, yet it would be overly simplistic to lump it in with other Japanese protest books, even those about Okinawa. Bernarda SHAHN
Condition: In fine condition, as made. [Roosevelt, NJ: ca 1969-70]. Octavo (23.5cm). Red paper-covered boards; [28]pp. Original hand-made "dummy" of 28 pages, with text and illustrations tipped on to blank pages. Includes a hand-lettered title page and 26 original pencil drawings by Bernarda Shahn, illustrating the (mostly) animal characters in the text. The published book was issued by Holt, Rinehart and Winston in 1970. An enigmatic folktale in which a fox and a horse, each starving to death, must decide among themselves which one is to die. Shahn's animal illustrations are lively and accurate throughout. This is presumably an unused trial version, as an ink note to the front cover states "do not use this dummy." Carl Withers was the author of the well-known 1948 poetry anthology A Rocket in My Pocket. Bernarda Bryson's 1963 book The Sun Is A Golden Earring was a Caldecott medalist.

Edward RUSCHA
np, 1969. Condition: Near fine / SIGNED by Ruscha at inside front cover. 8vo. Publisher's wraps in original glassine. SIGNED by Ruscha at inside front cover. Mild toning and chipping to glassine with price sticker at front flap and some creasing to flaps. Distributor sticker at final page. Trivial touches of wear to wraps at edges. Interior bright and clean. Near fine. Third edition of the first of Ruscha's sixteen books and an iconic early artist's book. Inspired by the look and feel of the books he encountered at the bouquiniste stands on the Left Bank during a 1961 trip to Paris, as well as his own work as a typesetter and printers devil, Ruscha self-published TWENTYSIX GAS STATIONS with an aesthetic reminiscent of iconic Editions Gallimard paperbacks. Conceiving first of the title, Ruscha took photographs to fill the requisite number on a road trip from Los Angeles to visit his mother in his hometown of Oklahoma City. The photographs, labeled with the station name and location, together form a dotted line between LA and Oklahoma, creating out of these stoically framed images of banal locations a deep emotional resonance. Euripides; Bagg, Robert (Translator); Baskin, Leonard
The Gehenna Press, 1969. Baskin, Leonard. Limited Edition. Hardcover. First edition with these illustrations, limited to 200, of which 100 were for sale, folio size, approx. forty-one unnumbered leaves and a suite of ten etchings, inscribed by Leonard Baskin. Near Fine. The Gehenna Press was founded by Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) in 1942, while he was studying at Yale University; Baskin was a sculptor, printmaker, illustrator, wood engraver, book artist, writer and teacher, and his work is often compared to William Blake, who was also interested in being author, artist, and printer of his work. The Press closed after Baskin's death in 2000, and books printed by the Gehenna Press are highly coveted, particularly those accompanied by Baskin's unique illustrations. Some of its best known works are Sylvia Plath's "The Colossus and Other Poems" and "Crow" by Ted Hughes. "Euripides is the unsurpassed master analyst of the warring tensions in man's mind and heart. . .In triadic interplay, Euripides created the conceptual matrices from which have flowed our formulations of lust, chastity and guilt. Can there be a theory of guilt without Phaedra, a theory of virginity without Hippolytos? In these two. . .Euripides wrought archetypal figures of endless life. The Gehenna Press has embodied the monumentality of this tragedy in a splendid and austere new translation. . .by Robert Bagg the poet and classicist" (n. b., above quotes from prospectus). ___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter adobe-red morocco with morocco tips, marbled paper boards, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edge … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tomi Ungerer's illustrations, for a time, helped define Madison Ave. His work appeared in Esquire, Life, Harper's Bazaar, The Village Voice and The New York Times. He drew the iconic Dr. Strangelove movie poster. "Tomi influenced everybody," said his friend and author/illustrator, Maurice Sendak. "No one, I dare say, no one was as original as Tomi Ungerer." His distinct form of simple line drawing practically screams "the Sixties." Ungerer drew political cartoons, illustrated iconic childrens books, such as Flat Stanley as well as drawing darkly pornographic artwork based around sadomasochistic themes.
