Brown patterned paper boards with leather spine and gilt imprint, housed in a matching slipcase. Laid in are two pieces from the publisher, both with color illustrations. One is an order form and another is an exhibit catalog list for an exhibition of Gunnar Widforss, August 17 through September 28, 1969 at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. The catalog has slight creases. Swedish artist Gunnar Widforss (1890-1934) was best known for his watercolors of Grand Canyon and other national parks. Big format artist's book, which contains photo-collages of newspaper articles. An important collaborative work was created in 1969 by the American artist Paul Thek (1933-1988) and the Dutch photographer and designer Edwin Klein (1946-) for the Pauk Thek and the Artist's Co-op installations at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Moderne Museet, Stockholm.         Four One-Page Typed Letters Signed to Michael Perkins (T.L.S.)

      California: Self-Published, 1969. First edition. Loose Sheets. Very Good. Sold here together are four related letters typewritten and signed by Harlan Ellison to fellow writer Michael Perkins - all dated in 1969. All on Mr. Ellison's personal letterhead. As background it should be stated that Mr. Ellison wrote the Afterword for The Tour, a novel by Perkins published by Essex House in 1969. The afterword was very complimentary. The backstory of these letters is that Mr. Ellison writes (in the earliest of these four letters) to ask Perkins if he would like to contribute a story to an antholgy that is being worked on entitled Again, Dangerous Visions. That first letter is dated 25 August 1969 and is quite cordial in tone and is signed off as "Sincerely". By the fourth letter in this sequence, dated only a slender four weeks later (27 September 1969) the tenor of the discourse between the two writers has, let's just say, more than slightly deteriorated. This fourth letter begins "Listen, fuckoff, I am right about that first story, [right being underlined] and what is more, this [again underlined] thing is awful. The letter goes on in what might be characterized as a sarcastic and caustic manner ("I am publishing a Speculative fiction anthology, you gibbering troglodyte, not a college playpen stapled-together-mimeographed-selection of the best of Creative Writing 101" and is signed off as "Challengingly: To be fair, in the final paragraph, Mr. Ellison does offer some constructive ideas as to how Perkins might improve his story. Four entertaining letters from this talented and sometimes controversial writer. No envelopes are present. The letters are stapled together in the top left-hand corner. The letters are otherwise all in very good or better condition.

        Calendar 1970

      Tokyo, 1969. First Edition. Stiff Folder. Near Fine. 39 by 29.5 cm folder, with 12 brightly colored monthly plates, 37 by 29 cm. Serizawa (1895-1984) was a much celebrated and decorated fabric and textile designer. In 1956 he was proclaimed by the Emperor "Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property", a title known outside Japan as a "Human National Treasure" of Japan. And in 1976 he was appointed Member of the Order of Cultural Merit. He began issuing calendars, each different from the prior ones, in 1946, and continued to do them until his death. The artwork and appearance of the calendars is highly distinctive, with their dazzling colors, their brash, broad-brush typography, their bold, whimsical, folk art-inspired and often playful imagery arranged idiosyncratically. Serizawa was applying his artistic sensibility and technique from textile work onto paper, and the result is unlike virtually anything else one is likely to have ever viewed. Serizawa's technique, known as "Kataezome", was a traditional one that had fallen into disuse. Basically it involved stencils combined with dye-resistent paste. Serizawa also relied on vegetable colors. In reviving Kataezome, Serizawa involved himself in every step of the process. The results bear some kinship to colorful Japanese toy catalogues, but these calendars have an explosion of color and collage-like composition that easily sets them apart from these catalogues all the same. The artwork here proclaims a freedom in so many ways, and yet they are clearly painstaking in their technique and are all of a piece and relate well to one another. Light and smallish dampstain on lower edge of folder front cover. Minor creasing to plates along edges here and there.

The artist gives full rein to the ''critical-paranoid method" in which the imagination takes ''found'' images and pulls from them new meanings. Here for the most part he turns and twists anodyne engravings from nineteenth century catalogues and schoolbooks into obscene and sometimes disturbing forms. Dali defined his paranoid-critical method as, "a spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based upon the critical-interpretive association of delirious phenomena". André Breton hailed this as an ''instrument of primary importance'' for the Surrealist movement.Covers a little bit spotted. Near fine in near-fine cloth slipcase slightly rubbed at the corners.
