The Andromeda Strain (Signed First Edition)

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1969. First edition. Very Good +/Very Good +. A Very Good + copy in like dust jacket. The book has a contemporary gift inscription and slight separation within the text block. Price clipped dust jacket is toned and with a few creases on the flaps. Signed by the author on the title page. Crichton's first book published under his own name. The classic genre thriller that would make Crichton's reputation. "The Andromeda Strain" follows a group of scientist as they race against time, working to stop the emergence of an extraterrestrial plague. The novel took Crichton over three years to write and, in fact, he began it after reading a spy thriller called "The Ipcress File," while he was studying Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. Crichton is, of course, of one the most popular novelists of the 20th century and is the only writer to have a hand in three number one projects - in television, film, and literature -- at the same time (E.R, Jurassic Park, and Disclosure). "The Andromeda Strain" would be adapted into a 1971 film, directed by Robert Wise. "Tired out by a long day in the country, I was awake way past bedtime. My arms were numb from propping up my head. By turning from side to side, I had driven the cats from their place at the foot of the bed, and they were disgruntled. I was very likely disturbing my wife's sleep. But I was well into Michael Crichton's The Andromeda Strain. And he had me convinced it was all really happening."(Contemporary New York Times review). Very Good + in Very Good + dust jacket.

""This poignant, wildly funny novel can be seen as part and parcel of the cultural ferment and artistic experimentation which characterized 1969, the tumultuous year of its publication. At the time, the book's obscenity and perceived anti-Semitism created outrage, excitement, and tremendous sales. The book endures because of vivid characterizations, perfect-pitch capture of vernacular speech, and the pathos of its hero's predicament"" (Books of the Century, 32). A superb copy, with an uncommon early signature. Brandes & Durkan A5. Fine ¶ "Seamus Heaney has been, for good or ill, internationally the most prominent and the most popular Irish poet of the latter part of the twentieth century and the first part of the twenty-first. . . . His first two collections, Death of a Naturalist and Door into the Dark, largely written before the renewed outbreak of the so-called 'Troubles' in 1968, show Heaney alerting his audience to the violent history of colonisation on his native ground, but preoccupied also by the rhythms of life in a rural setting remembered from his childhood. He also, in a Wordsworthian manner, focuses upon the sources and resources of his own poetic voice and power. N. B.         The Rose Series, 6 original ink, gouache and graphite works, in black, white, and shades of grey, on paper, 16 x 20 inches, one sheet signed "Joe Brainard 1964

John Ashbery wrote in an Art News review of Brainard's third solo exhibition at the Landau-Alan Gallery (March 22-April 17, 1969): "Joe Brainard reminds one of Proust's gallant remark to the painter Madeleine Lemaire that she had created more roses than anyone after God. Brainard gives both a run for their money, if not with roses then with pansies, and with tulips and poppies tied for second place, row upon row of garden-variety flowers painted with meticulous deftness... The effect is always of profusion and of strangeness beyond that. What is a flower, one begins to wonder? A beautiful, living thing that at first seems to promise meaning...but remains meaningless. Here they merely continue, each as beautiful as the others, but only beautiful, with nothing behind it, and yet... The unfinished clause secretly binds the work together and raises it above a high level of provocation. All of the paintings but one are framed and glazed and they are in fine condition. Provenance: Felix Landau Gallery, Private Collection (Los Angeles). Exhibited at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NY, 2011.

        Haschrebellen Teach In 29.11.69

[Berlin]: [Hascrebellen], 1969. 60 by 43 cm. Black text on white stock. Fine condition. Original poster for an event presented by the Haschrebellen, a tongue-in-cheek left-wing organization in the same milieu as the Red Army Faction in West Berlin for an action that took place (presumably in West Berlin) on November 29, 1969. At this event were representatives from Fatah (the Palestinian political party) and Tupamoros (the left-wing movement in Uruguay in the late 60's and early 70s). The main event included a concert by the Argentinean band Vox Dei, billed as "acid rock, guerilla rock, total music." At the bottom below the main image of two crypto-hippies, armed to the teeth with Molotov cocktails and more brutish weapons is the phrase "Terror-Rauschgift," which translates as "Terror Drug." A very lively poster, in exquisitely preserved condition, that dates from an extraordinary time in West Berlin, somewhat romanticized in movies like The Baader-Meinhof Complex and Marianne and Juliane. No holdings in OCLC.

50 Jahre Madaus: Eine aufgeschlossene Firma

Dr. Maudhaus & Co, Köln am Rhein 1969 - 4to. Unpaginated (72pp. & 8pp. text booklet). Pictorial wraps in sturdy original paper-covered, printed cardboard slipcase. Wraps and slipcase protected by modern mylar. Creatively designed book by the German pharmaceutical company Madaus, published to commemorate their 50th anniversary. Profusely illustrated with over 100 b/w reproductions of photographs (many in photomontage) by Barbara Schulten, 4 color illustrations, and a total of 12 pop-up inserts, tipped-in ephemera, pull-out tabs, and pop-up figures. Includes 16 1/2" x 22" color fold-out poster of an 1930's advertisement. One fold-out illustrated with a mouse in a science lab, when opened an accordion-style pop-up creates the noise of a shrieking mouse. 8 page booklet "Haussegen! Ein Kochbuch von Frau Pastor Madaus", as well as reader-reply card laid-in, as issued. The 'Pop Art' layout and design of the work shows similarities to Andy Warhol's 1967's 'Index Book'. "Madaus, founded in 1919, is one of the world's leading producers of pharmaceuticals, particularly those produced from plants, and the book extols the virtues of homeopathy and the social role of developing new drugs to fight disease. Not only a cornucopia of design and layout ideas, it features several pop-up pages in the style of a children's book. The result combines a high purpose with a sense of fun, as if the customers of Madaus - institutions used to dealing with the question of man's mortality - could benefit from an injection of laughter into the serious business of medical research." (Parr & Badger II: 196). Minor creasing on spine, covers slightly scuffed. Slipcase with minor rubbing on head and tail of spine and edges. Minor creasing on bottom corner of color fold-out. Text in German. Tight copy in very good condition. Complete with all pop-ups & the booklet, as issued. One of the best designed and most innovative publications of company photobooks.         Bijster 1-6 [Complete]

Amsterdam: Bezige Bij G. A., 1969. 4to, each issue offset printed in b/w with color covers. Text in Dutch. All issues published of one of the defining late 60's periodicals in the Netherlands devoted to pop and counter-culture, with a constant erotic and political edge - an aspect which has historically drawn comparisons with America's Playboy magazine, though Bijster suffers in that comparison - I don't remember Borges ever being on the cover of Playboy. With work by artists and photographers throughout, including Ed van der Elsken (full page nudes in every issue, as well as a text on Harry Mulisch in the first), artwork by Remco Campert in every issue, John Anthony West's article in English on the Living Theater, and plenty of underground comics and erotic illustrations, including a generous selection of work by R. Crumb in the final issue, along with an essay about his work and underground comics. There are Dutch translations of Leonard Cohen lyrics in no. 4, poems by Jan Cremer (in English), material on Che Guevara, Bob Dylan, The Living Theater, and other contemporary figures, and interviews or work with contempory writers, including Georges Bataille, Jerzy Kosinski, J. P. Donleavy, Borges (a photograph of whom graces the cover of issue no. 2), Simon Vinkenoog, Hugo Claus et al. A very good set with wear, especially to no. 1, which has some foxing and a previous owner's signature to cover of no. 1. The remainder have occasional bumping and some short tears at spine ends, but remain sound and, with the exception of no. 1, relatively bright.
