QUI TACET CONSENTIT Original 1969 DAVID LANCE GOINES Poster. This original QUI TACET CONSENTIT lithograph was printed in an edition of only 300 on both tan and white paper, this copy is printed on 17-1/2" x 22-1/2" white paper. It is a photo off-set lithograph printed in brown and black ink. Printed in 1969 at Berkeley Graphic Arts, 1703 Grove Street, Berkeley CA 94709, by David Lance Goines. This is a very scarce original first printing as indicated by the Union Label of the Printing Pressmen and Assistants printed in small print at the bottom. GOOD CONDITION: light wear from age and handling, some foxing most noticeably at the bottom portion, some waviness, a few small stiff creases, light edgewear with a few small edge-tears, and two pin holes at the upper corners; overall this rare poster remains bright and unmarked. A remarkable artifact from Goines early radical days. This is the 2nd poster Goines produced, and is one of only a few political protest posters he produced. The image is from a photograph of young men throwing rocks at Russian tanks. Berkeley has a rich history of radicalism, especially during the 1960s when the Free Speech Movement morphed into anti-Vietnam War Protests and Occupy People's Park. David Lance Goines (b 1945) pioneering poster artist, political activist, calligrapher, graphic artist, and printer. In 1964, 19 year old Goines was expelled from UC Berkeley after being arrested and jailed for protest leafleting on campus during Berkeley's Free Speech Movement. He apprenticed at the radical, era defining Berkeley Free Press which he acquired in 1971. Here is the chronology of the Press: [Free Speech Movement press], 1964-1965; Berkeley Free Press, 1965-1967; Berkeley Graphic Arts, 1967-1971; Saint Hieronymus Press, 1971-present.       New York: Random House, (1969). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Good/Very Good. 372 pages. Matthiessen's sympathetic account of the United Farm Worker's Union and the Grape Boycott. First edition (stated, with numberline ending in 2, as is standard practice for Random House). This is an extraordinary copy, inscribed by both Cesar Chavez and Larry Itliong, the leader of the Filipino members of the UFW. Cesar Chavez writes, 'To the Krug family with warmest personal good wishes' and signs in full. On the following page is a second inscription, 'May 17, 1970. To a wonderful family and friend of the farm workers. Mabuhay, Larry Itliong.' An autograph note by Matthiessen written to another person, but mentioning Chavez, is laid in. An extraordinary copy. Unfortunately, the previous owner had written her name and address inside and has annotated and underlined many pages.
