        Andy Warhol (Stockholm Catalogue)

Stockholm: Moderna Museet, (1969). One introductory page was loose and been tipped back in, pages browning as usual, else near fine in Warhol's famous silkscreened flower boards. Only the second copy of this elusive edition I have seen or handled.. Second printing. Quarto. The exceedingly rare edition in hard cover, with between 10-50 copies known to exist. This copy from the library of Warhol biographer and confidant, Bob Colacello, with his signature and handwritten ex-libris on the front end paper. Warhol's famous 'Stockholm Catalogue', published on the occasion of his first European solo show at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, February - March, 1968. The concept for the catalogue was developed by Kasper König, who commissioned Factory stalwart Billy Name, and a teenage Stephen Store, to photograph how Warhol and his coconspirators lived and worked. But it was König's use of the xerox machine to reproduce Warhol's own work that gives this catalogue its signature feel. By some estimates over 200,000 copies were printed in three editions. (Parr / Badger, v2, 144-145; Open Book 238-239).

        Chicago, Chicago

Tokyo: Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, (1969). A fine copy in silver-stamped black boards, in an extremely nice example of the fragile photo-illustrated publisher's slipcase, complete with the card insert (lightly fixed), publisher's yellow obi, and original tissue overlay (lightly worn at the edges). The nicest copy I have seen.. First Edition. Square quarto in slipcase. Foreword by Harry Callahan. Text by Shuzo Takiguchi. Layout by Yusaku Kamehura. SIGNED by Ishimoto. Beautifully conceived, designed, and printed. While the influence of Ishimoto's teacher, Harry Callahan, is evident here, there is no mistaking Ishimoto's virtuosity, both as a photographer and a book maker. Certainly the finest Chicago photobook ever published. (Parr / Badger, v1, 289; Auer 495).

STILL LIFE WITH RASPBERRY. Or the bumper book of Steadman

Rapp & Whiting. London. 1969. FIRST EDITION. LIMITED EDITION. (10.2 x 11.2 inches). One of only 50 numbered copies, signed, with extra title, and portrait of Harold Macmillan, all in black ink on the half title page, by Steadman. The page has the books printed title beneath which Steadman has written, " or Decayed Decade. Ralph Steadman. June '69.", beneath this he has drawn a portrait of a decaying Macmillan and numbered this copy "26/50". A very good copy in the publishers brown cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Illustrated endpapers printed in brown on white paper. In the original colour illustrated dustwrapper, designed by Steadman. The price (63s) still intact on the inner front flap. One small (about 1 inch) closed tear, without loss, to the top edge has been neatly repaired with archive tape to the rear. Overall a very good copy of Steadman's biting satire of the 1960's including the wonderful images of the Beatles as Goya style Bats, Francis Bacon's Christmas party and his own redrawing of several of William Hogarth's most famous works.

The Lord of the Rings, 1st Deluxe 1 Volume Edition

London: Allen & Unwin, 1969. First Thus. Original Cloth. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, De Luxe Edition, by George Allen & Unwin. This is the 1st impression of the one volume De Luxe Edition of the Lord of the Rings, published by Allen & Unwin in 1969. A Very Good Plus example of a highly collectable book. It has a little loss of gilt on the upper rear corner of the spine, a neat repair to the front endpapers which had split along the gutter, the only faults noted. The slipcase shows some minor rubbing and wear to the edges, but has protected the book for over 40 years. This edition is printed on India Paper, making the full 3 volumes bound into a single volume, only 1 inch thick. The black buckram cloth has the Tolkien design depicting the Numenorean throne with 'Elendil' in tengwar, stamped on upper cover in gilt, silver and green. Mottled black and grey wove endpapers, all edges trimmed and speckled light green. Housed in the original publishers slipcase, only the 1st & 2nd impressions were issued with the slipcase. Both maps bound in, and in Near Fine condition, one minor tear at the mounting area, but no loss. An excellent example of this wonderful edition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / No Jacket, as Issued.

Bound by Douglas Cockerell and Son using three different marbled papers. Tiny bump to one corner, still easily fine in marbled papercovered boards.         Earth House Hold

(NY): New Directions. (1969). Essays on spirituality and the natural world. Only 2500 copies printed. This copy is inscribed by Snyder to Clayton Eshleman: "For Clayton in Ypsilanti, in friendship, Gary/ III.92." Eshleman's signature on front flyleaf, with the notations: "NYC May 2, 1969/ Revisited Ypsilanti Nov. 1988." Also with Eshleman's notes throughout. An influential book: Snyder, a Pulitzer Prize winning poet, here presents essays and journal entries on spirituality and ecology -- "earth house hold" being a play on the roots words of ecology. A seminal text of the environmental movement and, in particular, the notion of Deep Ecology. Also a nice association copy between two prominent poets, one a Pulitzer Prize winner, the other a winner of the National Book Award for one of his books of translation. Both, in addition, have had an interest over the years in ethnopoetics, and in tribal and prehistoric arts and have broken new ground in bringing these subjects into the contemporary dialogue on poetry and art. A thread pulling at the spine cloth, a few small stains to covers; still a near fine copy in a near fine, foxed, parchment dust jacket, an unusual production. . First Edition. Hardcover.

        The Man Among the Seals

Iowa City: Stone Wall Press. (1969). Johnson's first book, a poetry collection published in an edition of 260 copies. Although not issued as a signed limited edition, this copy is signed by Johnson (using two pens, apparently the first one was failing). Label removal abrasions to front endpages and sticker removal mark on front cover. Sunning to the edges and spine; a very good copy, without dust jacket, as issued. Laid in is an announcement for a 2008 reading by Johnson and others, presumably the event where the signature was obtained. A scarce first book -- preceding his second by over a decade -- by a writer best known these days for his fiction, winning the National Book Award for his 2007 novel Tree of Smoke. . First Edition.         Typed Note Signed

[1969]. January 4, 1968[1969]. A note addressed "Dear Bert [Krantz]," thanking him for a card and then quickly adding that he has found two errors in the text of "PC" (Portnoy's Complaint), despite not having read the book through yet. He describes the errors and asks if they can be corrected in then second printing and whether Bantam will print from the second printing. Signed: "Make love, not typos,/ Yrs, Philip." Roth's dating of this letter is itself likely a typo: the book's official publication was in February of 1969; the letter was likely written in January of 1969. A bibliographically significant letter, pertaining to what may still be Roth's best-known work. Folded for mailing; recipient's marginal mark; author's name on verso; near fine. .

Two handwritten notes by Jackie Kennedy, one on very attractive ìASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU / ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRYî letterhead

Typed Letter Signed ìAlbert L. Casassaî as Commander, The American Legion John F. Kennedy Memorial Post No. 287, 1p, 8.5î x 11î. Langley Park, Maryland, May 6, 1969. To Mrs. Aristotle Onassis.
