Where the Wild Things Are [Poster]; "A 'We Like Books' Poster from the See-Saw Book Club" PG-804

Scholastic Publications, New York 1969 - Elephant Folio 23" tall; 1 pages; 1969 Scholastic Publications. A very early and very uncommon poster for Sendak's Wild Things. Issued by Scholastic to announce their pending (1st paperback) publication of Sendak's most celebrated work. This is a very large poster measuring 27 x 40 inches. Distributed to teachers and schools, it is safe to assume that most were consumed in the process of display and use. This example may have been unfolded once but remains very nearly as new in its original folded "distribution" condition. A high point in the range of Sendak posters, beacuse of its unique association with the Wild Things book, and the difficulty in finding copies in well preseved condition. 12 years handling Sendak material and I have seen no example in better condition, including several I have sold to institutions and collectors. Signed and dated by the author, "Joy Maya Angelou." Fine in a fine price-clipped dust jacket. An exceptional copy. This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts of all black men and women... I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved... Her portrait is a biblical study in life in the midst of death." (James Baldwin)

The Complete Works of Walter Savage Landor

New York - Barnes and Noble, 1969. New York - Barnes and Noble, 1969 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The complete works of Walter Savage Landor, nineteenth-century writer and poet. With frontispieces to each volume. Including his famousImaginary Conversations, along with his poetry. In a long and active life of eighty-nine years Landor produced a considerable amount of work in various genres. This can perhaps be classified into four main areasprose, lyric poetry, political writings including epigrams and Latin. His prose and poetry have received most acclaim, but critics are divided in their preference between them. Landors prose is best represented by the Imaginary Conversations. He drew on a vast array of historical characters from Greek philosophers to contemporary writers and composed conversations between pairs of characters that covered areas of philosophy, politics, romance and many other topics. These exercises proved a more successful application of Landors natural ability for writing dialogue than his plays. Although these have many quotable passages the overall effect suffered because he never learned the art of drama. Landor wrote much sensitive and beautiful poetry. The love poems were inspired by a succession of female romantic idealsIone, Ianthe, Rose Aylmer and Rose Paynter. Equally sensitive are his domestic poems about his sister and his children. In the course of his career Landor wrote for various journals on a range of topics that interested him from anti-Pitt politics to the unification of Italy. He was also a master of the epigram which he used to good effect and wrote satirically to avenge himself on politicians and other people who upset him. Reprinted from the 1927-1936 Chapman and Hall edition. Complete in sixteen volumes. Condition: In green cloth bindings. Externally very smart, with just some minor shelfwear to a few volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just theodd patch of foxing. Overall: NEAR FINE..

        RECH GIA

Grafica moderna-contemporanea 1969 - Tiratura: E.A.

        Voyage to Atlantis

New York -G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1969. New York -G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1969 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A facsimile copy of the original printed manuscript of Mavor's fascinating work. Contains none of the photographs, maps, charts and drawings of the first released edition. Newspaper review of the first released edition taped on to the half-title. Atlantis is a legendary island first mentioned in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias, written about 360 BC. According to Plato, Atlantis was a naval power lying in front of the Pillars of Hercules that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before the time of Solon, or approximately 9600 BC. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean in a single day and night of misfortune. The possible existence of a genuine Atlantis was discussed throughout classical antiquity, but it was usually rejected and occasionally parodied by later authors. Atlantis inspires today's literature, from science fiction to comic books to films. Its name has become a byword for any and all supposed advanced prehistoric lost civilizations. Jame's Mavor led an expedition to discover Atlantis and find the cause of its downfall. He succeeded, recording the history of a cataclysmic natural disaster that sunk the fabled island. Mavor inspired further research into past volcanic eruptions and floods, and brings the myth of Atlantis into the light of scientific reality. Condition: In a half calf binding. Externally smart, some shelfwear and marks to the rear board. Internally firmly bound, aside from the half-title which is working loose. Marginal age-toning, but clean throughout with just the veryodd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Golda Meir Invites an American Semiconductor Pioneer to an Israeli Economic Conference

Jerusalem 1969 - Typed Letter Signed as Prime Minister, to Albert Soffa. Jerusalem, May 29, 1969. 2 pp. 8 1/2 x 11 in. On Israeli Prime Minister letterhead. Golda Meir, Israel's first female prime minister, writes in English to American industrialist Albert Soffa inviting him to the "first meeting of the International Economic Advisory Council." Among the details of the conference, Meir suggests the weight of the tasks facing her government, concluding by saying that while the Israeli government is "naturally burdened as a first priority with the maintenance of our security and the struggle for peace, we dare not for a moment divert our attention from the crucial need of maintaining and expanding Israel's economic momentum on which so much depends."Albert Soffa (1920-2005) was a mechanical engineer with degrees from Drexel and Harvard. After forming a 1951 partnership with Frederic Kulicke, the pair went on to become leaders in the wire bonding field, a key component of linking integrated circuits or other semiconductors in electronics. He was active on many boards including the Ben Gurion University Board of Governors and a trustee of Drexel University. Golda Meir (1898-1978) was a signer of Israel's Declaration of Independence. Born in Kiev, she lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1906-1921), then settled in Palestine and took up social work, becoming a leading figure in the Labor Movement. She served as Israeli Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1948-49); Minister of Labor (1949-1956); Foreign Minister (1956-1966) and Prime Minister (1969-1974).
