Damnation Alley (+ Author Signed 1st edition 1970 paperback of same story)

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1969. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons. F/NF. 1969. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. LOC: 7795238 . This 2-book package includes the 1st edition/1st printing, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1969 hardback in dustjacket + the 1970 1st paperback edition (Berkley Medallion Edition, June, 1970, SBN: 425018466). The paperback has been SIGNED by Roger Zelazny on its title page. Will be up to a future owner whether to keep both books together for the signature, or to cut out the signed title page of the paperback to lay into the hardback. The hardback 1st editon/1st printing book is in Fine condition, bound in red cloth with black spine and front panel printing. It is straight, clean, tight (probably unread) with just a touch of cloth softening from shelving to lower spine end and a couple of 'very' tiny flecks (smaller than a very sharp pencil lead) on the page edges. The Near Fine+ dustjacket is crisp, clean, unfaded and price intact. It has a few tiny edge nicks to flap fold ends and upper spine end. A beautiful copy of a hard to find in decent condition 1st edition sci-fi book. The paperback is straight, clean, tight (for sure unread) with what I think were originally yellow page edges that have faded and toned to be almost light tan like the text block paper - and in very small, almost illegible letters (thin outlines only) 'Jun 22 1970' is stamped on the bottom page edges in light green. Aside from the age toning to the text paper and the almost invisible date-stamping, the paperback is in Near Fine condition - no spine creasing, the cover and pages are good but a bit tanned-looking on the page edges, there's a bit of light toning to spine and back panel of the cover - but the title page is not wrinkled (that was me being careful not to stress the spine when I made the image). This story was made into a movie in 1977. The book version is a hard-hitting post-nuclear apocalyptic story that unfortunately for the movie industry's finances was cut and twisted into an unrecognizable mess - but then Star Wars came out in 1977 also so it might not have mattered anyway. ; 8-3/16" x 5-3/4"; 157 pages; Signed by Author .

ART BY TELEPHONE: AN EXHIBITION ORGANIZED BY THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART UNDER THE SPONSORSHIP OF THE AMERICAN NATIONAL BANK AND TRUST COMPANY OF CHICAGO - THE ORIGINAL 33 1/3 RPM LONG PLAYING RECORD ALBUM

Chicago, IL: Museum of Contemporary Art, 1969. Van Der Marck, Jan. ART BY TELEPHONE: AN EXHIBITION ORGANIZED BY THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART UNDER THE SPONSORSHIP OF THE AMERICAN NATIONAL BANK AND TRUST COMPANY OF CHICAGO - THE ORIGINAL 33 1/3 RPM LONG PLAYING RECORD ALBUM. Chicago, IL: Museum of Contemporary Art, 1969. First Edition. Large Square 4to. 12" Vinyl LP in Jacket. Near Fine./Very Good.. One 12", two-sided vinyl 33 1/3 rpm long playing phonograph record in a printed paper over cardboard gatefold sleeve, 1 b&w illustration. "Shortly after its opening, the Museum of Contemporary Art planned an exhibition to record the trend, incipient then and pervasive today, toward conceptualization of art. This exhibition, scheduled for the spring of 1968 and abandoned because of technical difficulties, consisted of works in different media, conceived by artists in this country and Europe and executed in Chicago on their behalf. The telephone was designated the most fitting means of communication in relaying instructions to those entrusted with fabrication of the artists' projects or enactment of their ideas. To heighten the challenge of a wholly verbal exchange, drawings, blueprints or written descriptions were avoided". Taken from the album jacket, this was curator Jan van der Marck's summation of the infamous Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago "Art by Telephone" show. This is a copy of the 1969 record which reproduces the phone calls of participating artists Siah Armajani, Richard Artschwager, John Baldessari, Iain Baxter, Mel Bochner, George Brecht, Jack Burnham, James Lee Byars, Robert Cumming, Francoise Dallegret, Jan Dibbets, John Giorno, Robert Grosvenor, Hans Haacke, Richard Hamilton, Dick Higgins, Davi Det Hompson, Robert Huot, Alain Jacquet, Edward Kienholz, Joseph Kosuth, Les Levine, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Dennis Oppenheim, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, Guenther Uecker, Stan Van Der Beek, Bernar Venet, Frank Lincoln Viner, Wolf Vostell, William Wegman, and William T. Wiley giving instructions to the MCA staff on how to execute their various pieces for this exhibition which alas, went unrealized. A most handsome, unplayed example of the original 1969 pressings and jacket of this uncommon document (cited on page 215 of Guy Schraenen's "Vinyl: Records and Covers by Artists") whose gatefold sleeve shows some light rubbing and minor abrasions to the exterior.         [Complete Set of Three Silk-Screened Posters for Cage's Performance of HPSCHD]

Urbana-Champaign: University of Illinois, 1969. Urbana-Champaign: University of Illinois, 1969. First Edition. Near Fine. Three large original silk-screened posters, each roughly 38" by 28" and on heavy "construction"-like paper. Occasional tiny edge tears. A small chip here and there. Some minute pin holes. Else bright and sharp. Easily near fine or better. HPSCHD (pronounced "harpsicord") was premiered at the Assembly Hall of University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign on May 16, 1969 as the culmination of Cage's artistic residency there. One of the earliest musical works for computer, and ultimately a five-hour multimedia extravaganza, it remains a landmark happening of the 1960's. Cage helped design and produce two of the posters using change operations. The final example, depicting Cage as a dragon slayer, we suspect is the work of a student who'd read too much Tolkien. Fewer than one hundred of each poster were produced, however, and were so popular on campus that most were stolen for dorm display by students. Rare. OCLC locates just one complete set (at the Getty) and no individual examples (though we are aware of an uncatalogued set at Northwestern). A complete set of striking posters documenting a major Fluxus performance and a key event of the 1960's avant garde, one that Richard Kostelanetz called "one of the great artistic environments of the decade" (JOHN CAGE: An Anthology p. 173).

        UBIK

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc. [Doubleday Science Fiction], 1969. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. An about Very Good copy of the quite uncommon first edition, first printing (some curving to the boards, endpapers renewed) in an about Very Good dust jacket (restoration to the lower spine, to a small chip at the bottom of the front panel, and to the outer portions of each flap -- a copy which we thus conclude to be ex library but without any indication thereof except as described above); a landmark science fiction novel described by novelist and journalist Lev Grossman as "a deeply unsettling existential horror story, a nightmare you'll never be sure you've woken up from". Philip Dick's former wife, Tessa, stated that "Ubik is a metaphor for God. Ubik is all-powerful and all-knowing, and Ubik is everywhere. The spray can is only a form that Ubik takes to make it easy for people to understand it and use it. It is not the substance inside the can that helps them, but rather their faith in the promise that it will help them". She explains the curious ending as having been intended to show that we cannot be certain of anything in the world that we call reality. Time magazine named the novel as one of the hundred greatest English-language novels published since 1923. Copies of the first edition that are not ex-library are quite scarce. All things considered, a Very Good copy.

        Andy Warhol (Stockholm Catalogue)

Stockholm: Moderna Museet, 1969. Stockholm: Moderna Museet, 1969. Second Printing. Softcover.. Near Fine. 4to. Unpaginated (ca 400pp. Printed wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White plates. Text in English and Swedish. Bumps to corners. Really the brightest copy I've ever seen, no browning or sunning anywhere. More images available on request. One of the great books. Kasper Konig developed the concept for the catalogue, and commission Billy Name and a teenage Stephen Shore to heavily document Warhol and factory life. Parr in the photobook vol.2 "It is a fine example of the catalogue-as-artist's-book, a form that ostensibly began with the Dadaists and Surrealists, and is produced with some of the roughest reproductions ever seen, which are entirely appropriate, and supplemented by a long section of Factory snapshots by Billy Name. The genre was revitalized by the Pop movement, and Warhol in particular, which demonstrates his position as a latter-day Dadaist. The Moderna Museet publication especially had a great influence upon Japanese photography in the late 1960s and 1970s, particularly the photobooks of the Provoke era.Ó

This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts of all black men and women... I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved... Her portrait is a biblical study in life in the midst of death" (James Baldwin).

Where the Wild Things Are [Poster]; "A 'We Like Books' Poster from the See-Saw Book Club" PG-804

Scholastic Publications, New York 1969 - Elephant Folio 23" tall; 1 pages; 1969 Scholastic Publications. A very early and very uncommon poster for Sendak's Wild Things. Issued by Scholastic to announce their pending (1st paperback) publication of Sendak's most celebrated work. This is a very large poster measuring 27 x 40 inches. Distributed to teachers and schools, it is safe to assume that most were consumed in the process of display and use. This example may have been unfolded once but remains very nearly as new in its original folded "distribution" condition. A high point in the range of Sendak posters, beacuse of its unique association with the Wild Things book, and the difficulty in finding copies in well preseved condition. 12 years handling Sendak material and I have seen no example in better condition, including several I have sold to institutions and collectors.
