        Slaughterhouse-Five

Delacorte, (NY) 1969 - His masterwork, a powerful, genre-bending fictional memoir of his experiences as a POW during the Allied fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany. The first printing was 10,000 copies. On all three major lists of the top books of the 20th century. Signed by the author with a self-caricature. Minor foxing to top edge of the text block and slight sunning to board edges, as is almost always the case with this title; very near fine in a very mildly spine-sunned dust jacket. In a custom clamshell case. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Slaughterhouse-Five or The Children's Crusade (Signed)

Delacorte, NY 1969 - First edition of this, the author's most notable novel -- about the fire bombing of Dresden. This copy is signed by Paul Collins, and dated in year of publication. He had something to do with either the author or Delacorte Press, because this is a presentation copy of Dr. Charles Brown, who, according to a laid in note, found an error on Page 158 that has "already been brought to the author's attention". I cannot detect the error, so it may have to do with historical fact. A most handsome copy of a book that is getting harder to locate in collectable condition. A bookplate signed by Mr. Vonnegut is laid in. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Left Hand of Darkness.

Walker & Company, New York 1969 - First edition of the author's Nebula and Hugo award-winning novel. Octavo, original gray cloth. Signed by the author, who has added a line from this work as follows, "Facts are no more solid, coherent, round and real than pearls are. But both are sensitive. Ursula K. Le Guin". Near fine in an excellent dust jacket with some of the usual toning to the spine. A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of intellectual science fiction. "A jewel of a story" (Frank Herbert). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Original Poster: Coming in November Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Scholastic Book Services New York [1969] - First Edition. An extremely uncommon 27.5 inch by 40 inch poster for Where the Wild Things Are, published by Scholastic in advance of the first paperback printing of the book in 1969. Hanrahan states that the poster, which depicts Max with scepter before Wild Things, was probably sent to teachers for their participation in the "we like books" book club program. Lower margin with title of poster and copyright information. See C1c in Hanrahan. Only the third produced poster in Sendak's rather large body of poster work. The bibliographer's example cites pin holes to corners. This is fresh unused and near Mint poster. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

A Collection of 81 Different 1960s Hippie Photographs

A collection of mostly counterculture related photographs circa 1969 by a little-known young Baltimore photographer. A few are signed with a Baltimore address. 81 prints. All but one are in black and white. A small crease to the corner of one image, a few small spots on another, and light foxing on a few of the cardboard mounts, but the condition is generally fine. The images break down into the following groups: 1. Thirty-seven large images mounted on oversize cardboard prepared for an exhibition. Subjects include nude hippie chicks (some with body paint), an Allen Ginsberg poetry reading, bikers, a couple of variations on a cemetery, and an outdoor concert (possibly Woodstock); 2. Thirteen larger unmounted images, subjects include nude hippie chicks (more with body paint), pot smokers, and rock and roll and bluegrass bands; 3. Thirteen smaller images mounted on cardboard for exhibition, all of Frank Zappa and his band; and 4. Eighteen smaller images, unmounted, subjects include nude hippie chicks (still more with body paint: apparently there was a sale), rock bands, and Sikhs. Anecdotally, we understand that the photographer later decided to adopt a Sikh philosophy and lifestyle. Not overly distinguished as fine art photography, but a reasonably serious, interesting, and pleasingly typical collection of photographs devoted overwhelmingly to the hippie era. .
