Tales of passed times by Mother Goose. With morals. | Contes du tems passé de Ma Mere l'Oye. Avec des Morales. . . . The six[!] edition."London" [=The Netherlands], J. Melvil, 1764. Small 8vo (15.5×9.5 cm). With an engraved frontispiece and 8 engraved plates after Hendrik Immink, one for each fairy tale. Rebacked in modern half brown morocco.

Cohen & De Ricci 789 note; ETSC N44521 (3 copies); KVK & WorldCat (3 copies, incl. 2 incomplete); Muir p. 51; not in Albers, Moeder de Gans in Nederland, 1969; STCN; for Immink: Scheen, p. 241. Rare early bilingual edition of the "Mother Goose" fairy tales of Charles Perrault, with parallel texts in English and French on facing pages. It includes "Little Red Riding Hood", "Blue Beard", Sleeping Beauty", "Puss in Boots", "Cinderilla"[!], "Little Thumb" (Tom Thumb) and two other Perrault tales. The added tale by Perrault's niece Marie-Jeanne l'Héritier de Villaudon, "The discreet princess", occupies the last 78 pp., also with parallel texts in English and French on facing pages. The present book is the only English edition of Perrault's tales before 1785 for which the ESTC records more than one copy: it records only 3 copies of the present issue and 3 copies of what may be another issue of the same edition. The frontispiece and 8 plates (one illustrating each Perrault story) are skilfully executed in a lively style, primarily by etching. They are more artistic than the earlier illustrations we have seen. There is a water stain at the head of quire N and the last 2 leaves. The book is otherwise in very good condition and the text and plates are well printed. The binding is slightly scuffed and rebacked, and has later endpapers. A rare early English and French Mother Goose, with 9 lovely plates.

Random House 1969-2002., New York - First editions, first printings of each volume in the author's acclaimed autobiography series. Octavo, 6 volumes. Each are signed and inscribed by Maya Angelou. An excellent set in dust jackets. "This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts of all black men and women. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved. Her portrait is a biblical study in life in the midst of death" (James Baldwin).

Portnoy's Complaint Signed Limited Edition, #179 of 600 copies

New York: Random House. F/F. 1969. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 6916414 . Signed and numbered by the author on the limitation page. Fine, clean, straight book that is very tight and apparently unread, bound in ivory colored rough weave cloth with gold gilt printing on the front and spine and publisher's red upper page edges, in a Fine, clean and undamaged dustjacket (no flap data and unpriced at publisher's wish) of a yellowish-tan color with small decorative threads woven throughout the paper. The book is housed in publisher's light red paper-covered boards slipcase that is in Very Good+ condition with the limitation number written small in ink at the lower spine end, a shadow from a (probably) very small price sticker at the upper right corner, and some small nicks in the paper at the opening of the slipcase. It is structurally very sound; just has a few small cosmetic problems. The classic tale of a repressed and imaginative young man who has vivid sexual fantasies and adventures, all ruined by feelings of shame and fear of retribution instilled in him by his parents. Made into a memorable movie in 1972, with Richard Benjamin playing the part of Alexander Portnoy. Similar themes to Roth's 'Goodbye, Columbus' - but perhaps that's partially because Richard Benjamin also starred in that movie and left an indelible impression of an angst-ridden young man. .

        Portnoy's Complaint

New York: Random House 1969 - . Limited numbered edition. Signed by Roth on the limitation page. One of 6000 copies, this copy #319. Publisher's coarse light beige cloth, lettered in gilt, red topstain; in the original light beige dust jacket, lettered in gray, housed in the publisher's red slipcase, with the limitation number handwritten to the spine in black. An excellent copy, with a hint of light wear to the extremities, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with just a touch of toning to the spine, bright and fresh panels, slipcase with some light wear to extremities and a few spots of light soiling, else fine. Overall, a fine copy in a fine dust jacket and excellent slipcase. Portnoy's Complaint is the novel that is credited with transforming Roth from a promising young author into a major literary celebrity. The novel features the protagonist Alexander Portnoy, a young bachelor whose strong sexual desires and inability to achieve satisfaction results in his simultaneous self-loving and self-loathing. The text is structured as Portnoy's extended, continuous monologue in a singular therapy session with his psychoanalyst Dr. Spielvogel, to whom Portnoy divulges confessions of libido in scathing detail. A semi-autobiographical text, Portnoy's Complaint is infused with aspects of Roth's own life, including the protagonist's Jewish heritage and many of the New Jersey locations, such as Roth's alma mater Weequahic High School in Newark. Despite its controversial reception for its explicit descriptions of the protagonist's sexuality, Portnoy's Complaint is a widely acclaimed novel that served as the basis for the 1972 film of the same name written and directed by Ernest Lehman. Indeed, in his 1969 review for The New York Times, Josh Greenfeld proclaimed, "Don't feel the least bit guilty about enjoying it thoroughly: I know not since Catcher in the Rye have I read an American novel with such pleasure." During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Pagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day (modified after Wiki). This work documents these remaining temples and pagodas and the Buddhist and other iconography housed within. No ownership marks and no signs of use.

Gift inscription by Angelou: ___ __'s Beloved Joy! Maya Angelou. First edition, first printing as copyright page states first edition and also has a full numberline beginning with 2. However, there is no red/magenta top-stain which is required for the true preferred 1st printing. Additionally, this copy has a blind impression on the lower corner on rear panel thus regarded as either a bookclub edition or a leftover/remainder copy. There is no remainder marker or spray on bottom page edges. DJ price has mostly been clipped as only the $ symbol is left on the flap. This book would grade fine if not for some textural scuffing to the FFEP. While there is no staining to the FFEP, from experience it appears that a bookplate was likely removed as the paper is rough in a few spots. The book would grade Near Fine should you choose to add your own bookplate or gift bookplate on this spot. Minor wear at corner tips. Black cloth is bright and clean. Pages are tight and bright. DJ is bright and attractive with only minor rubs/soiling. Book appears unread. This is a very nice, tight and clean copy, signed and inscribed by Maya Angelou. Better than VG++. New York: Atheneum, 1969. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/near fine. A Very Near Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing (some spotting to the topstain, minor spot to front free endpaper -- otherwise Fine), in a Very Near Fine dust jacket (light wear to the spine ends, small spot to the rear panel), SIGNED BY J. M. G. LE CLÉZIO on the half-title and there fittingly inscribed by him as follows: "a voyage imaginaire / avec le merci / de JMG le Clezio"; le Clézio's third novel, a tale centered on Chancelade, a man who, from childhood to death, sees his life in minute detail. J. M. G. le Clézio' won the 1963 Prix Renaudot for his novel debut novel "Le Procès-Verbal" (published in English as "The Interrogation"), and the 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature as an "author of new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy, explorer of a humanity beyond and below the reigning civilization". Of "terra amata, the Wall Street Journal stated (in 2008, after le Clézio had published over 36 books ) "...Mr. Le Clézio's most impressive book may be a brief one he published at age 27, when he was still a combative modernist. "Terra Amata," translated into English in 1967, combines his game-playing as the author with a savage lyricism reminiscent of Thomas Hardy." We have not seen any other signed copies of the book in any language. A Very Near Fine copy, SIGNED BY J. M. G. LE CLEZIO. QUITE SCARCE.

        Okinawa, Okinawa, Okinawa (signed)

Tokyo: Shanken, 1969. Tokyo: Shanken, 1969. First Edition. Softcover.. VG+. Small 4to, Unpaginated (ca 160pp). Printed wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White plates. Text in Japanese. A little wear to corners and spine and a little foxing to covers. One of the best copies I've seen, and very scarce when signed. More images available on request. Highly politicised work from Tomatsu and one of his most famous books. "Like most of Tomatsu's books, Okinawa is difficult to categorize. It borrows stylistically from the Provoke school while never losing its focus as a social documentary, yet it would be overly simplistic to lump it in with other Japanese protest books, even those about Okinawa". (Auer) Signed by Tomatsu with dedication to last page.

Damnation Alley (+ Author Signed 1st edition 1970 paperback of same story)

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1969. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons. F/NF. 1969. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. LOC: 7795238 . This 2-book package includes the 1st edition/1st printing, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1969 hardback in dustjacket + the 1970 1st paperback edition (Berkley Medallion Edition, June, 1970, SBN: 425018466). The paperback has been SIGNED by Roger Zelazny on its title page. Will be up to a future owner whether to keep both books together for the signature, or to cut out the signed title page of the paperback to lay into the hardback. The hardback 1st editon/1st printing book is in Fine condition, bound in red cloth with black spine and front panel printing. It is straight, clean, tight (probably unread) with just a touch of cloth softening from shelving to lower spine end and a couple of 'very' tiny flecks (smaller than a very sharp pencil lead) on the page edges. The Near Fine+ dustjacket is crisp, clean, unfaded and price intact. It has a few tiny edge nicks to flap fold ends and upper spine end. A beautiful copy of a hard to find in decent condition 1st edition sci-fi book. The paperback is straight, clean, tight (for sure unread) with what I think were originally yellow page edges that have faded and toned to be almost light tan like the text block paper - and in very small, almost illegible letters (thin outlines only) 'Jun 22 1970' is stamped on the bottom page edges in light green. Aside from the age toning to the text paper and the almost invisible date-stamping, the paperback is in Near Fine condition - no spine creasing, the cover and pages are good but a bit tanned-looking on the page edges, there's a bit of light toning to spine and back panel of the cover - but the title page is not wrinkled (that was me being careful not to stress the spine when I made the image). This story was made into a movie in 1977. The book version is a hard-hitting post-nuclear apocalyptic story that unfortunately for the movie industry's finances was cut and twisted into an unrecognizable mess - but then Star Wars came out in 1977 also so it might not have mattered anyway. ; 8-3/16" x 5-3/4"; 157 pages; Signed by Author .
