        Chicago, Chicago

Tokyo , BIJUTSU SHUPPAN-SHA, 1969 - Foreword by Harry Callahan. Text by Shuzo Takiguchi. 208 black and white photographs by Yasuhiro Ishimoto. Note by Yusaku Kamekura. Layout by Yusaku Kamehura. Text in Japanese and English. 4to. pp. 224. . . Senza custodia, ma ottima copia (Without original white card slip-case, otherwise fine). Prima edizione (First edition). [Parr, Badger, 2004]. "Like the earlier work the book is split into sections, seven of them this time, revealing various aspects of Chicago and the two major photographic preoccupations of Ishimoto at the time - the formal urban landscape and the street portrait. If the portraits and street-life images win out, it is because people are more interesting then things, and the photographer himself is more challenged by people, less prone to exercising merely formal concerns, though no Ishimoto image is ever less than elegant" (Parr, Badger, The Photobook: A History volume I - p. 289) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Campo urbano. Interventi estetici nella dimensione collettiva urbana. Como 21 settembre 1969

Como: Editrice Cesare Nani, , 1969. Brossura (wrappers). Ottimo (Fine). Testo di Luciano Caramel. Completamente illustrato con fotografie di Ugo Mulas. Progetto grafico di Bruno Munari. 8vo. . Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First Edition).

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

New York: Random House, 1969. First edition of the author's critically acclaimed first book. Octavo, original first issue book, with the top edge stained red. Signed by the author "Joy! Maya Angelou" on the half title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. An excellent example. "This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts of all black men and women... I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved... Her portrait is a biblical study in life in the midst of death" (James Baldwin).

Archive of Nine Letters discussing Samuel R. Delany's work including Dhalgren

N.p.: N.p., 1969. Archive of four typed letters signed from Samuel Delany and five carbon typescripts unsigned from Kirkpatrick Sale, dating from June 14, 1969 to October 25, 1969. The correspondence concerns a possible submission by Delany to be published in a forthcoming magazine started by Sale and Donald Barthelme and discuss Delany's work on both "Dhalgren" and "The Tides of Lust." Samuel Delany is one of the most influential and important of the New Wave science fiction writers of the 1960s and 70s. The author of over 20 novels, he has won four Nebula and two Hugo awards for his work, and was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 2014. Delany's work touches on numerous themes rarely broached by the genre as a whole, including issues of identity, sexuality, gender, race, and class. Nominated for a Nebula in 1975, "Dhalgren" is generally considered his masterpiece, and one of the great science fiction works of the latter twentieth century. Experimental in structure, it recalls both James Joyce and Thomas Pynchon, and its popularity and influence have reached far beyond the genre. His papers are housed at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University. Letters and other ephemera relating to Delany appear to be rare on the market. Kirkpatrick Sale graduated from Cornell University in 1958, where he was roommates with Richard Farina and befriended Thoms Pychon, whom he collaborated with on an unproduced science fiction musical called "Minstrel Island." Over the course of his career, he has worked as a journalist, activist, author, and independent scholar, where he is recognized as one of the leading neo-Luddites, anti-globalizationists, and secessionists. The archive begins with a letter from Delany, likely responding to Sale's solicitation for magazine content, by thanking Sale and, by proxy, Thomas Pynchon for their "enthusiasm" for one of Delany's books (presumably "Nova," published the previous year). He then asks Sale to "take a look at the novel I am working on, Prism, Mirror, Lens [underlined]." "Prism, Mirror, Lens" corresponds to the title of "Dhalgren's" opening section and this letter matches the timeline for the genesis of the novel, noted by Delany in several interviews as beginning in January of 1969. In any case, the brief description in the letter of the novel-in-progress is unmistakable: "In a burning city, all but evacuated, a young man is introduced to a variety of sexual / mythical / mystical experiences." In his reply to Delany, dated August 7, Sale (speaking editorially for both himself and Barthelme) notes they "admire your vision and where you seem to be headed" but that there isn't a section of the excerpt they can publish in the magazine as a stand alone piece. Sale then suggests reworking the latter section of the manuscript, where Kid enters the park, into something "dealing with the communal struggle" for the magazine, as "we are still high on your work." In the next letter, Delany mentions he has written a new piece for the magazine, a nonfiction work that is "essentially a description of communes in this country." In 1967, Delany lived in a commune on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and the nonfiction piece likely refers to his experiences there, and although this original article appears never to have been published, he would revisit that period in his 1979 full-length nonfiction book "Heavenly Breakfast." While the bulk of the remaining letters have to do with the proposed article, a September 29 letter from Sale mentions sending "the Equinox manuscript back to [Delany's agent] Henry Morrison" and that while "it doesn't really work for us... because the sex does not... [promote] happy sexual liberation and hang-up-free copulation," he thinks it would be a good fit for Ophelia Press (an imprint of Olympia Press). "Equinox," was one of two BDSM-themed pornographic novels Delany wrote concurrently with "Dhalgren." It was published in 1973 by Lancer Books under the title "The Tides of Lust." A new edition was published by RhinoEros in 1994 restoring the Delany's preferred, original title. It appears that Bathelme and Sale's magazine, which he identifies in the letters was to be called "X," never made it to publication. Barthelme, however, would go on to help found "Fiction" magazine in 1972, working out of the same W 11th Street address in New York City mentioned in the letters, and where Faith Sale, Kirkpatrick's wife, would serve as a member of the magazine's original editorial board. 8.5 x 11 inches, rectos only. Near Fine, with some chipping to the left edge of a few of the letters.

» (Pascale Casanova in Beckett l'abstracteur). The Aubrey/Maturin novels, complete in 20 volumes. ALL SIGNED. Master and Commander; Post Captain; H.M.S. Surprise; The Mauritius Command; Desolation Island; The Fortune of War; The Surgeon's Mate; The Ionian Mission; Treason's Harbour. . .

Philadelphia, London, & New York: Lippincott, Collins and Stein and Day (1969-1999)., 1969. First editions. Master and Commander; Post Captain; H.M.S. Surprise; The Mauritius Command; Desolation Island; The Fortune of War; The Surgeon's Mate; The Ionian Mission; Treason's Harbor; The Far Side of the World; The Reverse of the Medal; The Letter of the Marque; The Thirteen-Gun Salute; The Nutmeg of Consolation; Clarrisa Oaks; The Wine-Dark Sea; The Commodore; The Yellow Admiral; The Hundred Days; Blue at the Mizzen. Master and Commander and H.M.S. Surprise are Lippincott first American editions; The Mauritius Command and Desolation Island are Stein and Day first American editions; the remaining 16 are Collins and Harper Collins first English editions. This set of books comprising the entire Aubrey/Maturin series, all signed, came from the collection of the late Richard Mattie. Mattie was decidedly the most resourceful and one of the most passionate collectors I have had the fortune of knowing in my 30+ years of book selling. Patrick O'Brian was the focal point in his large collection, and getting the books signed was an accomplishment of epic proportions. O'Brian was a noted recluse who lived in rural France and eschewed most public contact including even interviews. At the strong behest of his American publisher, O'Brian did make several trips to the United States in the mid to late 90s and did, at this time, sign copies of his later novels (Clarissa Oaks through Blue at the Mizzen). But at no time did he do a public signing for all of his large, significant opus. In April 1999 O'Brian did a "Patrick O'Brian Mediterranean Cruise" aboard the ultra-posh, exclusive Sea Cloud. Also aboard as speakers were Walter Cronkite and Bernard Cornwell. Mattie learned of this cruise and he and his wife went, along with his O'Brian collection. But getting the books signed took all of his resourcefulness. O'Brian gave one brief talk the first night out but that was his only public appearance. Mattie befriended O'Brian's personal secretary and publicist who was traveling with the author. He explained his plight and she told him that O'Brian strongly disliked signing books but she would see what she could do. She came back the next day and said that she could probably get him to sign three books a day and this, then, is what they did. Mattie left the cruise having gotten the entire set (plus several others) signed. Along with the O'Brians is Mattie's personal limited cruise-specific copy of Sea Cloud by Kurt Grobecker and Peter Neuman; signed by the Captain and Annemarie Victory (the owner) as well as by various other crew members and passengers. There are no auction records since 1995 for individual early titles in the series signed let alone for a entire set signed. This is almost certainly a singular offer with the most unimpeachable provenance. All of the books are near fine to fine in near fine to fine DJs. The Djs on Master and Commander, H.M.S Surprise and The Mauritius Command have very shallow edge wear and the one on The Far Side of the World has some spinal sunning. Each book is SIGNED on the title page with the author's printed name stricken through by O'Brian.. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Concetto spaziale

The Double Suicide at Ten No Amijima [Double Suicide] (Original Japanese poster for the 1969 Japanese film)

Tokyo: Kiyoshi Awazu, 1969. Original poster for the 1969 Japanese film. Designed by Kiyoshi Awazu. A hand made silkscreen print gifted from Awazu to noted film historian and iconoclast Amos Vogel, with a margin design significantly different from the trade edition of the poster issued by Awazu (also in small numbers). From Vogel's collection and offered as originally mounted by him for display in his home in Manhattan. Full provenance available. Awazu was a self taught artist and designer who during the postwar period took a leading role in Japanese graphic design. His sphere of activities in the art world since the late 1950s has included painting, sculpture, photography, film, theater, performance, music, literature, and architecture. Shinoda's film is a masterpiece of Japanese New Wave cinema, a brilliant modernist reworking of a famous 1720 bunraku (puppet theater) play written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Set in Osaka in the 18th century, the film centers on the doomed romance between Jihei (Kichiemon Nakamura), a down and out married paper merchant passionately in love with doe-eyed courtesan Koharu (Shima Iwashita), whom he cannot afford to buy out of servitude. Koharu has also fallen in love with Jihei, and begins turning away other patrons to be with him. Their love is further imperiled by Tahei (Hosei Komatsu), a rich, obnoxious merchant who flaunts his ability to buy Koharu's indenture. Suicide emerges as the only way for the two to be together. 21 x 32.5 inches, non-archivally mounted on foam board. Pulling from board at a couple of corners, and a few tiny edge chips and tears. Very Good plus overall. Shipping billed at cost. Criterion Collection 104.

The Great White Hope (Original screenplay for the 1970 film, with four original still photographs)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1969. Revised First Draft for the 1970 film. "Art" in holograph pencil on the front wrapper, and a few holograph notations in ink on page 2 noting various scene props, leads us to believe this belonged to a member of the film's art department, Dennis J. Parrish being the property master. Brief holograph notations in pencil and ink throughout. Laid in are several pages of revisions, beginning with page 137, and a notice "to all secretaries" to add said revisions, dated October 3, 1969. Also included are four vintage black-and-white single weight reference photographs from the film. Based on Sackler's 1968 Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award-winning play, a fictionalized account of the life of boxing champion Jack Johnson. James Earl Jones (his first starring role) and Jane Alexander (her first film credit and starring role) were both nominated for Oscars, reprising their lead roles from the Broadway production. Jack Johnson (1878-1946) boxed during heavy segregation in the American South, and rose to Heavyweight Champion of the World during the Jim Crow era. The white population was angered by Johnson's victories and his open relationships with white women, thus causing the United States Congress to pass a law in 1912 making it illegal to transport prizefight films across state lines, intending to curtail race riots. "The great white hope" is a reference to the boxer whom whites hoped would finally defeat Johnson. Shot on location in England, Arizona, and California. Blue studio wrappers, noted as REVISED FIRST DRAFT on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 196, dated May 12, 1969. Title page present, dated May 12, 1969, noted as REVISED FIRST DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter Howard Sackler. Script: 156 leaves, last leaf of text numbered 155, eye-rest green stock, mimeograph. Laid-in revisions dated October 3, 1969: 16 leaves (1 yellow "notice" page, 15 eye-rest green stock), mimeograph. Pages Near Fine, wrapper toned with light yapping, else Near Fine, bound with three gold brads. Revisions bound with paper clip. Film stills Near Fine.

Play It Again, Sam (Collection of 6 stills from the 1969 Broadway stage play)

New York: Sabinson, 1969. Collection of 6 vintage black-and-white single weight still photographs from the 1969 Broadway play, written by and starring Woody Allen, as well as Allen's first production with a young Diane Keaton. Each photo with a mimeograph snipe on the verso crediting photographer Leo Stern and the Sabinson Agency, along with a credits blurb. "Play It Again, Sam" was the third play by Woody Allen to be staged on Broadway (following "From A to Z" in 1960 and "Don't Drink the Water" in 1966). It was also the first--and last--play in which he would star, choosing to permanently invest his persona in his own films. The play was notable too as the debut of Diane Keaton (featured in one of the photos here), who would reprise her role in the 1972 film version and go on to be Allen's most famous muse. The play opened at the Broadhurst Theatre on February 12, 1969, and ran for a healthy 453 performances, closing on March 14, 1970. About a year later, Bananas directed by and starring Allen, would be released, featuring the screen debut of Woody Allen's "Allan Felix" persona developed for this play, one whose variations would grace innumerable films for decades to come. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm).
