This publication was published shortly after the events in Paris and in collaboration with the Atelier Populaire, who saw it as a means to propagate their message.

        Neil Armstrong contemporaneously signs a quote of his first words on the moon "HOUSTON, TRANQUILITY BASE HERE. THE EAGLE HAS LANDED"

On watermarked parchment linen paper. Quotation marks in darker ink. Rectangular 7"" x 5"" toning from prior matting. This is undoubtedly an item that dates from the period of Apollo 11. The fact that the signature is in the same brown ink as that of the quotation and that Neil has centered his signature above the quote (on a sheet this size almost definitely he would have placed his signature elsewhere if it were blank) assures us that he knew what he was signing.At 4:18 pm EDT, July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong radioed ""Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."" These were the first words from the Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle after he guided the craft to a landing on the Moon . At 10:56 pm EDT, Armstrong, ready to plant the first human foot on another world, with more than half a billion people watching on television, climbs down the ladder and proclaims: ""That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."" Accompanied by two unsigned 10¢ ""First Man on the Moon"" 1969 first day covers and an unsigned copy of a 7"" x 5"" color photograph, taken by Neil Armstrong, of Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin beside the deployed United States flag during an Apollo 11 Extravehicular Activity (EVA) on the lunar surface."

The price clipped jacket has a closed edge tear, a closed tear to the fold of the rear flap and chipping to the bottom edge of the spine. There is also some of the usualy rubbing to the rear jacket panel. Overall a very respectable copy of an increasingly difficult book to locate in collector's condition.         Brigade Tagebuch, Außenstelle Wickendorf

      Betriebsberufsschule des Sozialistischen Handels, Wickendorf, Schwerin 1969 - Small Folio. 78 cardboard plates. Original bolted beige half cloth over decorative orange paper-covered boards with white lettering and circular montage glued to front cover. One of a kind diary, spanning the years 1966 to 1969, kept by the "Brigade" (smallest organized working group in a firm, factory, production cooperative or administration) in the field office Schwerin-Wickendorf of the socialistic trade school Schwerin, today's capitol of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Extraordinary collection of lithographs, paintings, drawings, photography, montages, calligraphy and handwritten, respectively typed reports and testimonies, beautifully designed by the apprentices of a commercial art Brigade under the direction of comrade Wieschendorf. The conduct within a Brigade was strictly organized and competitive in order to accomplish the goal of winning the first prize and honorary title of "Collective of Socialist Work" on the national stage. The competition among Brigades was organized within the so-called Kombinat, a conglomerate of companies and/or production cooperatives (VEBs / companies owned by the people) with similar production profiles. This unique copy of the Wickendorf Brigade was started in 1966 in honor of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands), the Socialist Party of Germany pledging to work, learn and live in a socialistic fashion within the collective of apprentices of commercial art. The Mission Statement describes in detail the course projected to improve the training to become a competent commercial artist. Pasted to the next heavy card stock plate is a color lithograph of the trade school itself followed by two typed pages of "New Educational Methods." Five original works of the drawing class, depicting travel advertising for Wickendorf, are featured then, all receiving an A (1) from the instructors, handwritten into the margins with teacher's initials. The works graded A are a mixed media drawing by Winkler, watercolor and oil, an elaborate two page (folded) heavy card stock ad with beautiful handwritten text intricate pen drawings slipped into a cut envelope pasted to the page, a watercolor drawing by Günter Schneider, an extraordinary watercolor depicting the Wickendorf city scape with a beautifully executed "prism sky" by G. Thiem, and a color crayon drawing by Cornelia Strauss. Reports on the restoration of the school, community work, field trips and the cooperation with the Red Cross are described and beautifully illustrated with b/w photographs and professional designs. Noteworthy here a photomontage utilizing a West-Germany wine advertisement. "Hands off Cuba" and a protest against the US Vietnam politics follow and are described and illustrated. Contains a special section in honor of the VII. SED Convention including official documents of recognition by party officials. The following is a diary describing the noteworthy events and activities in the course of the three years illustrated with color and b/w photomontages, including references to events and exams prior to 1966. The diary closed with a section of collages of works "not suitable for the diary" which include surprising borderline works considering the strictly socialistic environment. The descriptive text in this Brigade Diary provides an extraordinarily accurate impression of everyday life in the GDR on one hand and the latitude extended by party officials to this particular, special Brigade. Text in German. Light wear along edges of covers with light sunning and a small hole at the bottom of cloth binding at front cover. Bifolium, 4-page pamphlet, (unpaginated). Pale yellow textured paper, printed in dark green, unbound as issued. Approx. dimensions 9.5 x 6 inches. With Linweave Textra watermark, 'Made in USA'. A near fine copy, with soft vertical fold and annotations to rear from original owner listing the The Doors' opening songs that evening 'Back Door Man / Break on Through / Soul Kitchen.' The third of four self-published poetry titles by Jim Morrison [1943-1971], after 'The Lords: Notes on Vision' (April 1969), 'The New Creatures' (April 1969), and followed by 'An American Prayer' (1970), and is his only work that was devoted to a single poem. The edition comprised 'vermutlich 500' copies (Gerstenmeyer), which were handed out at the two performances The Doors gave at the Aquarius Theatre, Hollywood (both 21st July 1969). By one account the theatre floor was littered with these leaflets after the show (Humphreys), so most would have been swept up and thrown out with the garbage; in fact the present copy only escaped as it's recipient tossed it in her handbag instead of the floor. Extremely scarce thus. 'Brian Jones' is a chilling meditation on the recent death of Lewis Brian Hopkin-Jones (Brian Jones) [1942-1969], founder and deposed leader of the Rolling Stones' and the 'first martyr of rock and roll', who, two weeks earlier, had been found dead in his swimming pool at Cotchford Farm, Sussex, former home of A.A.Milne. The circumstances of his death remain one of rock's greatest mysteries. Two years later, aged 27 (the same age as Jones lived to), Morrison himself would become an infamous rock'n'roll fatality. A Near Fine copy of the press kit for the 1969 film based on Bradbury's story collection, directed by Jack Smight and starring Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom. Contains 31 black and white photos featuring a variety of stills and characters in the movie, and 38 pages of text typed on specially designed paper, including a synopsis, actor biographies, and details concerning Rod Steiger's make-up and special effects. The original folder containing these materials is in Near Fine condition, the paper still white without a trace of toning and with a bit of light wear and creasing to the extremities; contents are Fine. Also included is the original mailing envelope, stamped SPECIAL DELIVERY and addressed to Roy A. Squires; envelope is Good only, still intact, but folded in half, toned and wrinkled at the edges. Roy Squires was, among other things, the literary executor for Clark Ashton Smith and publisher of several notable science fiction and horror authors including Ray Bradbury, Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, and Fritz Leiber. An uncommon press kit for a film based on one of Bradbury's most beloved collections, with terrific provenance.

A Very Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (quite light fading to the cloth extremities, some mild surface scratching to the front board), in a Very Good + dust jacket (spine mildly sunned and lightly soiled, some small spots to the rear flap fold, light foxing to the verso/inside), CONTEMPORARILY SIGNED, INSCRIBED, AND DATED BY ISAAC B. SINGER on the half-title as follows: "To David McCullough / with friendship and / greetings // Isaac B. Singer // Nov 26 1969"; Isaac Bashevis Singer's seventh novel, a sequel to "The Manor", both of which novels portray what Singer describes as "the epoch between the Polish insurrection of 1863 and the end of the nineteenth century" showing the growth of Jews' important role in Poland's industry, commerce, and arts and sciences. The dust jacket's rear panel includes a review by David McCullough praising "The Manor", so Singer's provision of this copy to McCullough was highly appropriate. Isaac Bashevis Singer won the 1978 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his impassioned narrative art which, with roots in a Polish-Jewish cultural tradition, brings universal human conditions to life".         Three Typed Letters, Signed, from Rev. Oscar Huber to Time Magazine Correspondent Hugh Sidey, and Two Typed Letters, Signed, from Sidey to Huber, Regarding the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy

      St. Louis, Mo., and Washington, D.C., 1969. [7]pp. total on quarto sheets. 4to. Fine. In a black and grey half morocco and cloth folding case, spine gilt. [7]pp. total on quarto sheets. 4to. "HE'S DEAD ALL RIGHT." An exceptional group of correspondence between Reverend Oscar L. Huber, the Priest who administered Kennedy's last rights after his assassination and is best known for allegedly leaking the news of JFK's death before there was an official announcement, and Hugh Sidey, the journalist for Time Magazine who reported that the Reverend declared "He's dead, all right." Though Huber struggled with the negative attention which came from being labeled disloyal to the United States Government for having gone against a request by the Secret Service to be discrete, these letters are the first time that Rev. Huber confronts his accuser, some six years later. ?By this time he had already published his own book entitled Last Moments With President Kennedy (1968) in which he vehemently denies leaking any information in the moments following the President's death. The catalyst for this exchange is the publication of several books on the Kennedy assassination which focused on his role in the Kennedy assassination. Quoting in part, he writes:"I am writing this letter after much deliberation. Shortly before Mr. Manchester's book, THE DEATH OF A PRESIDENT, came into the hands of the public, an article appeared in the February 7, 1967 issue of LOOK in which Mr. Manchester stated that you asked me if the President was dead, and I took a deep breath and said: "He's dead all right." Mr. Sidey, I did not tell you, or any other reporter, or any group of reporters the President was dead. May I ask you this question? Were you really at Parkland Hospital on the day of the assassination? If so, perhaps you did ask a Priest if the President was dead, and it is possible that he gave you the above answer -but I assure you if you did ask me the question I DID NOT tell you the President was dead."This begins a polite but heated exchange between the two men over the course of five letters. Sidey defends himself as a reporter, stating firmly (quoting in part):"We did not manufacture that reply. It is recorded for all posterity on the records of the broadcasters and wire services of that day. It had to come from somewhere?Further, I don't find it unnatural or in any way unfortunate that you said that. It was, in fact, to me, a very essential truth that needed saying just then."For all their heated debate, these two men end the correspondence on a surprisingly congenial note. From Sidey:"I think that the world is big enough for us to live with our memories. Neither of us, I suspect, is entirely accurate and neither of us has deliberately done anything to injure anyone else.  History is filled with such inconsistencies as ours and having been in the business of recording it day to day I can claim no infallibility nor can I grant it to any other human. You performed a very great service to a great man, his family and his country in a most critical time. The details are almost  irrelevant to that. I hope that my account has not really caused you too much embarrassment and I further hope you won't let it concern you much in the future."And Rev. Huber:"I am deeply impressed with your letter of May 13th. In my humble estimation it is a letter that only a gentleman would write. Never did I think you deliberately wrote those things which I made a sincere effort to clarify without giving offense to you. I assure you I hold nothing against you and that I would deem it a pleasure to meet you some day."These letters provide a captivating insight into what took place on the day of Kennedy's assassination, parts of which will always remain a mystery.

The Lord of the Rings, De Luxe Edition, by George Allen & Unwin. This is the 1st impression of the one volume De Luxe Edition of the Lord of the Rings, published by Allen & Unwin in 1969. A Near Fine copy of the book, in a Near Fine slipcase. The book basically has no faults, clean and bright, no markings or wear. A small Foyles stamp to lower edge of front pastedown, no previous owners names or writing noted. The case is in very nice condition, no bumped corners, hardly any rubbing or scuffs noted. This edition is printed on India Paper, making the full 3 volumes bound into a single volume, only 1 inch thick. The black buckram cloth has the Tolkien design depicting the Numenorean throne with 'Elendil' in tengwar, stamped on upper cover in gilt, silver and green. Mottled black and grey wove endpapers, all edges trimmed and speckled light green. Housed in the original publishers slipcase, only the first few impressions were issued with the slipcase. Both maps bound in, and in Fine condition, no tears or loss. An beautiful example of this wonderful edition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.       Miami: Miami Rock Festival Inc.: An Edcoe. Prod.. [1969]. Poster on yellow paper stock. Illustrated by "Conway." Measuring 17" x 22". Old folds with a small split at one fold, (almost certainly) contemporary color in an amateur but neat hand, near fine. An apparently unrecorded poster for an important and seminal rock festival. In the poster, an Atlas-type figure supports the festival which includes a "Magic Bus," camping, rock bands, a peace sign, a food concession stand, and an ambulance; the central image surrounded by flowers and the band names. The Miami Rock Festival which took place at Miami-Hollywood Speedway in Pembroke Pines, just north of Miami was a three-day event that featured Santana, The Grateful Dead, Johnny Winter, Canned Heat, The Band, The Turtles, Spirit, B.B. King, Butterfield Blues Band, Sweetwater, Ace Trucking Company, and many others. We can find no records for this poster in any of the art poster references (a fact perhaps exacerbated by several similarly named Miami-area rock festivals in 1968 and 1969 that featured similar acts). Neither could we find any other posters by this artist. Possibly a trial printing or a proof that wasn't used. Rare, and quite possibly unique. .

        A Catalan Cookery Book. A Collection of Impossible Recipes

      Paris: Lucien Scheler, 1969. Quarto, unbound sheets as issued, untrimmed, including eleven engravings by "Nicole", in printed soft paper wrappers; contained in a folder and box of a striking green/yellow glazed linen, lettered on the spine in crimson; a mint copy as issued, numbered and signed. Very rare on the market: a really handsome, unusual and rare book, privately printed for Lucien Scheler in Paris. Scheler was a founding partner of Librairie Thomas-Scheler, still a magnet for book-collectors in the rue de Tournon in Paris. A friend of many artists and writers, he had a sensible love of food and the exotic. The artist Nicole Fenosa, who signed her work "Nicole", was one such friend; she illustrated this book for him with a series of eleven very fine engravings. Nicole Fenosa still lives in Spain, the widow of the Catalan sculptor Fenosa who is himself remembered for a number of large public sculptures in France as well as various bronzes that still decorate the first floor of the Chanel maison de couture in Paris: he had been one of Coco Chanel's lovers.The text was edited with a foreword by the influential food writer Patience Gray, also a close friend of Scheler and of Davis. Irving Davis himself was a remarkable man, one of the partners of the extraordinary and fascinating firm of Davis and Orioli (Orioli wrote an enchanting memoir of his life as a bookseller). Davis was a great friend of Norman Douglas (there is an unmistakable air of Douglas in this book), a collector of erotica, and generally a charming renegade.This was the only version of the book to appear: it was printed in just 150 copies for sale, all numbered and signed by publisher and artist.An English version of the book was produced by Prospect Books in Devon, U.K., in 2002. Without setting out to emulate the physical appeal of the original (it is a simple paperback with a colourful cover) it did succeed in making the text more generally available, albeit in translation. Prospect Books said this about the work:'This book was privately published in 1969 after the author's death. It was edited and introduced by Patience Gray, who herself needs no introduction to Prospect readers. Echoes of Irving Davis, antiquarian bookseller, publisher and man of letters, abound in her own masterpiece Honey from a Weed. This book is a fragment - he was a man who sought perfection - and yet is complete enough for us to enjoy, and to cook from. He called his recipes 'impossible' because he despaired at substitution, or derogation from the original. 'Macaroni in the oven' calls for the blood of a chicken, other dishes are equally demanding. In the time since it was first written, authentic provisions and materials have become more available in Britain, the book less impossible.'The welcome afforded the recent reissue in Britain of Colman Andrews' Catalan Cuisine is a mark of the esteem attached to this style of cookery. Irving Davis' book is a perfect introduction; its limpid prose is a reminder of past habits of mind. There are sixty recipes, from soups to sweets, taking in a summer and a winter drink along the way. There are also eleven fine engravings by the artist Nicole Fenosa, at whose home in Vendrell Irving Davis spent many summers.'There are under a hundred recipes which are disarmingly simple yet make few concessions to the novice cook: this is not Delia Smith for the Mediterranean masses. There are eight main chapters covering soups; omelettes; pasta; snails; sea food; meat; salads and vegetables; and sweets. There is an appendix with some further documents about Irving Davis, including a few lines of his own on his life. The love affair of the English (and all northern Europeans) with the Mediterranean had especial piquancy in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - before easy travel opened to us other regions of the sun. Irving Davis' book strikes the same chords of memory and fascination as do the works of Goethe, Winckelmann, Norman Douglas, Gracie Fields, Somerset Maugham, Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, and Elizabeth David. Its publication might be seen as the last gasp of an era.'The book has had a pleasing reception in the British and the American press. Although it is the opposite of the current idea of a cookery book (no colour pics, not many recipes, no personality chef), it appeals to the reader as being good to handle, easy to read and attractively decked out. Rowley Leigh in the Sunday Telegraph chose it as one of his Christmas books and Ruth Gorb in the Hampstead and Highgate Gazette was very flattering too.'Ruth Gorb's very good review, which adds still more to the anecdotal record of this interesting coterie, can be found on the Prospect Books site (prospectbooks.co.uk). Among other details she notes that 'Although [Davis] got a kick out of smuggling rare erotic books into the country, reading them, he concluded, left him cold - "so much more amusing to read about the pleasures of the table than those of the bed"...'.

        A BUKOWSKI SAMPLER - JOHN MARTIN'S COPY, WITH A TYPED, SIGNED POEM LAID IN

      Madison, WI.: Quixote Press, 1969. First Edition. First Printing, one of around 400 copies. Octavo; orange stapled wrappers printed in black; 80pp; illus. The personal copy of Bukowski's long-time publisher John Martin, signed by him at lower edge of rear endpaper opposite his personal library label. Discreet crease to lower corner of rear wrapper, else Fine. An important, early compilation of Bukowski's work, culled from the pages of little magazines and early publications; in addition to a selection of Bukowski's poetry, the Sampler contains an introduction by Douglas Blazek and appreciations by Al Purdy, Steve Richmond, William Wantling, and Don Cauble, et al. Included with this copy is an original typed poem titled 'diagnosis,' unpublished, to the best of our knowledge; 12 lines typed on white stock measuring 4.75 x 7 inches, signed by Bukowski in an early hand. While the poem is undated, the typed address at the upper left corner is 5124 De Longpre Ave. in Los Angeles, the home Bukowski rented and lived in between 1963-1972. The De Longpre home was the epicenter of an explosion of Bukowski's work, and significant for being the place where Martin met him. A depressing poem about being a failure at writing, clearly written well before the years of poetry readings and book signings; given the tone, likely ca. mid-late 1960's.
