        The Day-Glo Designers Guide

      Day-Glo Color Corp. 1969 - A vintage design guide to the use of Day-Glo paint produced in the psychedelic late 60's. Front board is still covered with original mylar that is separated from the spiral binding at the bottom but has kept the front board very clean. Black boards have only slight rubbing along edges, a few marks on back cover and a small crease in the lower right front of the cover near the binding. The interior is very good condition with just a slight hint of tanning on the top pages. Colors are bright and do not appear to have faded much over time. The Bert Stern series of Marilyn Monroe prints are spectacular. Rear pocket contains three printers' color charts. A truly unique and collectible item. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      N.p.: N.p., 1969. Vintage oversize double weight candid photograph of Alan Arkin, Art Garfunkel, and Martin Sheen on the set of Mike Nichols' "Catch-22" in 1969. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. The photographer has written at the top of the verso, in holograph pencil: "Candid during rehearsal / The boys break up in briefing room scene / Art Garfunkel, Alan Arkin, Martin Sheen. Also with Willoughby's ASMP rubber stamp for both New York and Ireland addresses. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a Very Good + dust jacket with a few short tears at the extremities and some wrinkling at the crown, but no black marker cover-ups, which you'll see often.Mario Puzo's compelling page-turner about the Corleone mafia family. "The Godfather" was immensely popular and is thought to be responsible for introducing and popularizing Mafia speak and culture to the American public. When Puzo set out to write the book, he had already received critical acclaim, but not financial success, and so decided to write a best-seller. In this he succeeded wildly. More famously, the book was adapted into the 1972 film directed by Frances Ford Coppola, starring Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton, and considered by many to be one of the all-time greats. The film would win three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. (Puzo himself would win this award with Coppola). "The Godfather" would also be selected by the United States National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Puzo would go on to help write the script for "The Godfather Part 2" as well - for which he would win another Academy Award. "Yet 'The Godfather' is such a compelling story?         Archive of correspondence between Federico Fellini and Daniel Selznick regarding "Satyricon" and "The Voyage of G. Mastorna"

      1969. Archive of three typed letters signed from Federico Fellini to Daniel Selznick (along with carbons of Selznick's several letters in reply, as well as an associated memo), written in 1968 and 1969, making reference to "Satyricon" and more specifically to "The Voyage of G. Mastorna," a film project very dear to Fellini that held great interest for Selznick as well--but was never produced. "Mastorna" loomed over the second half of Fellini's career, the masterpiece that was perpetually in revision and on the director's mind. Marcus Perryman, in his introduction to "The Journey of G. Mastorna: The Film Fellini Didn't Make" (Berghahn Books, 2013) writes: "[Fellini] shrouded the film in mystery partly to keep open the option of making it. Every new project he worked on after his 'Satyricon' had first to get past the recurring thought, illusion or delusion of 'Mastorna.' After the initial failure, Fellini tinkered with the script for the next ten years. He came close to returning to it after 'Il Casanova,' which his analyst considered to be an important step in his self-therapy and one that 'Mastorna' would have extended further. "By his own admission, he repeatedly plundered the script for his new films: for the airport scene and award ceremony in 'Toby Dammit,' for the pope's regalia in 'Fellini Roma,' for verbatim inclusions and characters in 'Amarcord.' 'Prova d'orchestra' investigates the world of orchestral music, to which Mastorna belongs, albeit focusing more on the conductor as dictator than the musician as acolyte; 'La città delle donne' has numerous affinities with the unmade film. The bus and motel in 'Mastorna' are very much like Ginger's bus and motel and 'Mastorna' includes one of Fred's dance routines. Some said 'Ela nave va' was 'Mastorna' in disguise. ... Selznick, is best known as a producer for films such as Peter Bogdanovich's "Targets" (1968) and various documentaries about Hollywood. His association with his father allowed him many opportunities to meet and correspond with numerous actors, actresses, and directors of note. Though its predecessor units have lineage that dates back before the American Civil War, the formation was not formally designated as the 20th Engineer Brigade until its activation on 16 August 1950, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Deploying overseas in November 1952, it supported construction projects in southwestern France until its return to the US on 10 September 1954. Reactivated on 1 May 1967, at Fort Bragg, the brigade deployed to Vietnam where it supported American forces for several years and a dozen campaigns. Lowell appropriated the book and the margins are filled with his ticks and slashes and a few words, especially in the section "Ghazals, Homage to Ghalib," a series of meditations on contemporary life modeled on Ghalib; the similarity to the poems Lowell was then working on for NOTEBOOKS and HISTORY is remarkable as is the association value of this copy. Three years later Lowell would publish THE DOLPHIN which Rich called "a cruel and shallow book" and "one of the most vindictive and mean-spirited acts in the history of poetry." Writing in AMERICAN POETRY REVIEW, she said: "what does one say about a poet who, having left his wife and daughter for another marriage, then titles a book with their names [FOR LIZZIE AND HARRIET] and goes on to appropriate his ex-wife’s letters written under the stress and pain of desertion, into a book of poems nominally addressed to the new wife?" You will then take two years off as education leave, and afterwards will retrieve the management of the Midrasha. I wouldn't have believed anyone that you are capable and ready to do this, an action that in my opinion may bring the destruction of the Midrashain Sde-Boker. But I have had meetings. Several female students, that have recently graduated the teacher seminar in the Midrasha, and now became fresh teachers all over the country, came to me to voice support for your claims. I heard these claims with a great sorrow, not because I didn't like it, since I'm capable of hearing claims I dislike. I was upset because those claims came from you. You invited me to Even-Ari in Avdat, and I enjoyed your invitation, since I heard interesting things about the feasibility of fertilizing the desert without Yarden, Yarkon and not through desalination of sea water. But all of this was just a preparation for your claims. I happened to arrive at the parliament for a few moments, and two good acquaintances came to visit me. One of them is a teacher Levin, who is nowadays a member of the parliament, and you recruited him to stir up the Teachers' Union against the Negev Committee. The second person, who has earned a respectful position in our modern history, is a lawyer Klausner. You summoned him to prosecute the Negev Committee. Although I honor your activities in the Midrasha and I do not have an authority to intervene in its management, as a citizen I feel an obligation to do so, since this enterprise that you managed to raise to such a level, might be sacrificed in your war against the Negev Committee. During the last meeting I spoke to you, and you came up with three new demands, claiming that if they are accepted by the Committee, you'll agree to leave for studies at the end of the year. At the meeting I did not want to acquiesce to these propositions, but I could not understand how you came up with them and how it goes along with what should be done with the head of the Teachers' Union and with Mr. Klausner. I do not know if there is any value in my writing to you nor do I think that my sorrow will change your mind. However, as one who cherishes and admires your work in the development of the Midrasha for more than five years, I feel an obligation not only towards the Midrasha, but also to you, to tell what lies on my heart. The Negev Committee, headed by Ya'akov Ya'akovson, operated as the board of directors.In 1964, the Negev Committee assigned lieutenant-colonel Avraham Zvion to become the principal of the Midrasha. With heart and soul, Zvion built a vigorous community reaching over 1,000 members. He started several different specialized schools (i.e. high-school, teacher seminars) and recruited excellent teachers to join and promote the enterprise.
