Its headquarters are in Weinheim, Baden-Württemberg, and it has production facilities and markets in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the United States. The parent company was founded in 1849 as a producer of leather goods. The company was founded in 1849 by Carl Johann Freudenberg, the son of a wine merchant,[2] and his partner, Heinrich Christoph Heintze; the two took over a tannery at Weinheim. For the next 80 years, the company produced leather products exclusively. Hurt by the worldwide economic depression that began in 1929, and by shortages during World War II, it diversified into seals for motors made first of leather and later of artificial rubber (the Simmerring, named for an engineer called Walther Simmer), which led to fabrics and to cleaning fabrics and tools when it was noted that the company's cleaning ladies were using discarded scraps of the experimental fabrics. Vileda (from German: wie Leder, "like leather") window-cleaning cloths were first marketed in 1948. In the mid-1990s the company reorganized with a "highly decentralized organizational structure": it has 16 divisions or areas of business incorporating 430 independent units. Three-quarters of its business is as a supplier to other companies. In 2004 Freudenberg had employees in 43 countries. Recently it has focused attention on markets in China and Japan; for example, it provided the floor coverings for the Shanghai Metro stations. In 2002 the company closed its last leather tannery, marking the effective end of the leather industry in Germany. However, today Vileda is a market leader in Europe. All German cars contain parts made by another Freudenberg subsidiary, and German-made outdoor clothing contains fibers made by yet another.[4] Almost all major airports have flooring made by another Freudenberg subsidiary. In 2015 the group was a 7,5 billion euro business with more than 40,000 employees, approximately 11,000 in Germany. Revenues rose from 7 billion euros in 2014 to 7.572 billion in 2015. Where is your Vortex? London: The Egoist Ltd, 1919. PROVENANCE: The estate of R.B. Kitaj, via Peter Howard, Serendipity Books, with all bearing his price coding ("LEM") and most additionally annotated "In Our Time." Inspired by Walter Benjamin's classic 1931 essay "Unpacking My Library," acclaimed British artist Kitaj set out in 1969 (Benjamin's essay had been published in English for the first time just the year before) to photograph a selection of book covers from his library for a portfolio of color screen-prints entitled IN OUR TIME: Covers For A Small Library After the Life for the Most Part. The completed portfolio contained 50 covers and was issued in 1969 in a signed edition of 150 copies by Marlborough AG Schellenberg. Here offered are 12 of the actual books from Kitaj's library used in creating this work. The books offer a fascinating opportunity to investigate questions of representation and materiality, and embody something of the physical life they have endured over the 40+ years since they were last documented. Furthermore, at least several provide a glimpse at Kitaj's working methods for this series. One title (PLAGUE) shows evidence of having been touched up in the print. In another (MENSCHEN DER ZEIT), the artist completely altered the cover photograph, substituting an image of German actor Paul Wegener later in the same book for the original cover image. The page with Wegener has also been flagged with a scrap bookmark and a penned line appears on that page. Books were an enormous influence on Kitaj's art. His library in many ways was his studio ("For me, books are what trees are for the landscape painter") and in IN OUR TIME "Kitaj transcends the idea of the physicality of the book. By enlarging the covers he gives the chosen volumes a monumental presence, reinforcing the subjects within the covers with a new and powerful resonance" (Ramkalawon, KITAJ PRINTS: A Catalogue Raisonné). As The Independent (London) said in their 2007 obituary: "[Kitaj's] love of books connects inextricably with his sense of the importance of the transmission of knowledge and thought, through time, and with his awareness of the fragility of such transmission in any era of pers [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

FESTIVE WINE: ANCIENT JAPANESE POEMS FROM THE KINKAFU - DELUXE LIMITED SIGNED SLIPCASED EDITION WITH TWENTY-ONE ORIGINAL SIGNED AND NUMBERED WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY HANA MAKI

(MAKI, HAKU). Brannen, Noah & William Elliott. FESTIVE WINE: ANCIENT JAPANESE POEMS FROM THE KINKAFU - DELUXE LIMITED SIGNED SLIPCASED EDITION WITH TWENTY-ONE ORIGINAL SIGNED AND NUMBERED WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY HANA MAKI . New York & Tokyo: Walker and Company & John Weatherhill, Inc., 1969. First Edition 1/150 Deluxe. 4to. 1/4 Leather Over Boards in Box. Illustrated Book. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 78pp, 21 illustrations in woodcut. Text in English. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. With a bibliography. Published in 1969, this is Noah Brannen and William Elliott's significant translation of the "Kinkafu" scroll - a unique transcription of twenty-one ancient Japanese song-poems that was rediscovered in 1924 in the collection of rare books and manuscripts belonging to Prince Konoe that were sent to the Kyoto University Library for safe-keeping following the devastating earthquake and fires of 1923. This spectacular example of Post-War Japanese bookmaking contains English language typographic transcriptions of each of the twenty-one poems along with two scholarly essays on the form. These are printed by letterpress on handmade kyokushi paper and bound in gold foil-stamped white one-quarter top-grain goatskin over hemp-covered boards and housed in a cedar slipcase. The piece de resistance however is the twenty-one SIGNED AND NUMBERED color woodcuts commissioned from the noted late sosaku hanga artist Haku Maki that are matted and face each poem. A bright, well-preserved example of the exceedingly uncommon "enlarged, deluxe format first English language edition" that is limited to one hundred and fifty NUMBERED (61/150) copies SIGNED AND STAMPED by Haku Maki on the rear colophon as issued showing a few minor nicks, slight wear, and some mild discoloration to the white leather spine. It has been priced accordingly.         Vladimir Nabokov: oil painting by Gerard de Rose for Time magazine's cover of the novelist on May 23, 1969.

Montreux, Switzerland: by the artist, Feb. 1969. Painting from Life. Framed. Fine. Gerard de Rose. Painting by Gerard de Rose (1918-87) for the Time magazine cover depicting novelist "Vladimir Nabokov," dated May 23, 1969. The famous cover of the novelist at his peak bears a banner in the upper right reading: "THE NOVEL IS ALIVE / and Living in Antiterra." This is a rare, fine, and large study Signed by the artist Gerard de Rose of Vladimir Nabokov, the world-renowned Russian-American author and lepidopterist. De Rose painted this highly finished study from the life in Montreux, Switzerland. Gerard de Rose [with an accent on the final "e"] was the son of an emigree Russian professor of music and surgeon. The talented artist studied briefly at the Royal College of Art (1939) but from Dunkirk on wore the uniform of the Royal Engineers. After the war, de Rose returned to the Royal College of Art and became a lecturer. From 1958-67, he served as the head of the art faculty at Maidstone College of Art. In 1961, Gerard de Rose was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). Working mainly as a portraitist, he exhibited in numerous shows in Britain such as at the Royal Academy, Manchester and Alwin galleries, as well as at shows throughout the United States. (adapting Wiki.)Compared to the final Time cover that appeared a month later, this penultimate painting lacks the artist's inclusion of a few items associated with Nabokov. Those collage elements of cover art included two butterflies (one, a small "blue" Lycaena argiolus on Nabokov's shoulder: a species he made famous as a lepidoperist; the other a brown wood nymph above his head). The Time cover also depicted three Scrabble pieces labeled in Cyrillic Russian script to suggest Nabokov's love of words and gamesmanship. The cover also included a small tromp l'oeil sketch of Nabokov's mother "pinned to the wall" originally sketched by Léon Bakst in 1910; and two onion-domed cupulas of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow in the lower left. The Time issue includes under "Books," a clever piece entitled "I Have Never Seen a More Lucid, More Lonely, Better Balanced Mad Mind Than Mine: Nabokov" by staffers who interviewed Nabokov at his apartment in Montreux. Another article about the novelist in the magazine was "Prospero's Progress," by Harry Levin, a Harvard professor of English who did much to advance Vladimir's career (dated Friday, May 23, 1969). A copy of the original Time magazine will be furnished to the purchaser of the painting.

Ruskin's work was so important to Proust that he claimed to know "by heart" several of Ruskin's books The Artist , Pierre Lesieur, French (1922 - 2011). Popular in Europe, Lesieur has been the subject of elevenmonographs i n Fr an ce & Swi t z erland. See his website: http://www.pierrelesieur.fr/bibliographie1.html Journées de Lecture is described in the Koopman Collection Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the Hague, Netherlands: “The delicately detailed etchings that illustrate Journées de lecture were produced by Pierre Lesieur.....Having spent three days at the École des Beaux-Arts and a short period at the academy of cubist painter André Lhote and that of fauvist Othon Friesz, he turned his back on art education. Lesieur developed into a subtle artist on his own, finding inspiration in travel but also in everyday events. In Journées de lecture, books, bookcases, people reading and various details are pictured: an open window, crockery on a coffee table, the chest of drawers in the bedroom with the clock under a glass dome, 'chatting confidentially with seashells from far away and an old, sentimental flower' http://www.kb.nl/en/themes/koopman-collection/journees-de-lecture

CRACKERS - SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY FROM ED RUSCHA

Heavy Industry Publications, Hollywood, CA 1969 - np (240pp), 115 b&w illustrations. This is Ed Ruscha's photo-illustrated narrative featuring noted Los Angeles fashion designer Rudi Gernreich, his frequent model Leon Bing, artist Larry Bell, and Tommy Smothers as models based on Mason Williams' text "How to Derive the Maximum Enjoyment from Crackers" (which is printed on the inside rear flap of the dust jacket). Intentionally photographed as if a collection of film stills, this project served as the basis for Ruscha's 1971 film "Premium". A most handsome copy of the first and only edition (entry B10 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book") bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "For Bill - give this cover a scrubbing - Ed" to William Wilson in blue ink on the front free endpaper whose highly acidic chipboard covers show some typical age-toning and attendant offsetting to the free endpapers. Its white dust jacket shows light wear and minor chipping along the top and bottom edges, some overall soiling, browning to the spine and extremities, and fading to the red title lettering on the spine. The "Crackers" logo on the front of the jacket is still bright. It has been priced accordingly. The late William Wilson was the noted art critic for the Los Angeles Times for over thirty years, and a friend of the artist. We acquired this directly from Mr. Wilson's library prior to his passing.
