        Lord of the Rings

Published by George Allen & Unwin, London; 1969. This is the First India Paper Deluxe edition with all three books in one complete volume. This lovely book is an exceptional collector's item, being in Fine condition. Encased in it's original publisher's black cloth boards, with Tolkien's illustration of the Numenorean throne with "Elendil" in Tengwar in gilt to the centre of the front board and gilt lettering and detail to the spine, there is the slightest bumping to the spine ends and a couple of barely visible scuffs to the boards, otherwise this is a Fine binding in beautiful condition. Inside, printed on the thin, dense India paper, the pages are clean and bright and blemish free, with the blue speckles to the paper ends. The book comes with the map of middle earth affixed at the back of the book, this is complete, unmarked and entirely intact. Unfortunately, this book does not come with the slip case it was originally published with, but in spite of this, it is an exceptional example of the deluxe edition first printing of the ever-popular classic trilogy by Tolkien, which is popular across generations and would be the perfect to any Tolkien collection

Reduced Facsimile of the original 1938 Shell Garage poster by Ben Nicholson. In 1969 Royle, the printers, produced a small number of some of the famous Shell posters from the 1930s.         L'Enfant sauvage

Paris, [les Films du Carrosse, 1969], dact. Solange Vidaud.

SUCK First European Sexpaper (Issues no. 1 - 8)

London and Amsterdam: Joy Publications 1969-1974 - Newspaper - "First European Sexpaper" in tabloid format. Eight issues. Profusely illustrated with black and white and colour photographs and drawings. First four issues printed on news print, issues 5,6 and 7 on coated paper and the final issue 8 on heavy gloss paper. Issue no. 1 was published in London in September 1969. However, following the closure of the London PO Box address and the raiding of Suck's offices, the remaining 7 were published in Amsterdam by Joy Publications. Issue no. 1 has some wearing and small tears to the hinge but is, overall, in good condition considering its fragile news print paper. Issue no. 2 has some marking to the foot of the front cover and some wear. The other issues are all very good or near fine. Issue no 5 contains the loosely inserted pages designed to made into a sex-comic. This is a very good, complete set of a scabrous, revolutionary, humorous, and still relevant magazine that undermined, whilst, paradoxically, defining much of the prevailing culture of the late 60s and early 70s. To occupy such a space is rare and difficult. Very good The aim of Suck was to create "a new revolutionary sex-publication." From the beginning, the magazine worked in the spaces between between pornography, sexual liberation and gender identity. This was controversial then and remains, of course, controversial today with Germaine Greer still battling tirelessly at the front. Greer is now "no-platformed" for her views on what constitutes a woman. Suck, ultimately, left its readers in little doubt. Greer famously resigned from the paper after issue no.7 (the final issue, no.8, carried her resignation letter). For Greer (and probably for readers today), what began as sexual liberation for woman had become little more than a means for male oppression and aggression. Greer, in the final issue, described Suck as both pseudo- and counter- revolutionary. Reading the paper now, it is fascinating to see where the counter-culture ended and a new culture had begun. Suck was edited by William Levy, Jim Haynes, Germaine Greer and Heathcote Williams. It included contributions by W.H.Auden, William S. Burroughs, Tom Clark, Robert Crumb, Michael McClure, Valarie Solanas, Jean Stapleton, Alexander Trocchi (a translation of Apollinaire). This is a scarce set. Only one full set listed on Worldcat (in New York Public Library). We are also selling a first edition of Virgin Sperm Dancer (ref. 2715) and Wet Dreams (ref. 2716). We would be happy to discuss a combined price for these together with the full set of Suck. [Attributes: First Edition]

1969. Collection of 14 maps (nos. MI 1-13 and MI 18). Mostly in full colour; various sizes but mostly ca. 70 x 100 cm; scale mostly 1:100,000 (MI 3: 1:250,000; MI 6: 1:2,470 [b&w]; MI 7: ca. 1:1,600 [b&w with red overlays]; MI 8: 1:800 [b&w with red overlays]; MI 9: set of 2 maps [ca. 1:2,340 and 1:1,200] and 1 cross-section [all b&w, maps with red overlays]). All folded in original brown printed envelopes. 14 maps of the 25-map series published between 1966 and 1971, including the complete set of the first 13 maps. Many photomaps based on aerial reconaissance and photomosaics, showing geological or geochemical information. Some sheets include location diagrams, text, notes, cross sections, charts, index map, and insets. The mapped resources also concern ancient gold mines. Among the credited cartographers are some Arabian scientists, but mainly Americans: James Mytton, Robert F. Johnson, Virgil A. Trent, C. W. Smith, J. Kouther, M. Q. Asad, Gerrit Eijkelboom, Mohammed Gendi, Bernard Henry, Xavier Leca, Mohammed Shanti, Phillippe Delange, and Jean Pflaum. Abdullah O. Ankary contributed to the text of several maps, and much of the geology is based on work done in the 1950s and early 1960s by Glen F. Brown, one of the pioneers of the partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Saudi government which began in the 1940s, spanned the next five decades and played such an important role in the development of the kingdom. Also, the map and envelope design closely match that of the geological maps of Saudi Arabia issued by the USGS since the 1950s. - Perfectly preserved.

Layout by Yusaku Kamehura. Text in Japanese and English . 4to. pp. 224. . Senza custodia, ma ottima copia (Without original white card slip-case, otherwise fine). Prima edizione (First edition). "Like the earlier work the book is split into sections, seven of them this time, revealing various aspects of Chicago and the two major photographic preoccupations of Ishimoto at the time - the formal urban landscape and the street portrait. If the portraits and street-life images win out, it is because people are more interesting then things, and the photographer himself is more challenged by people, less prone to exercising merely formal concerns, though no Ishimoto image is ever less than elegant" (Parr, Badger, The Photobook: A History volume I - p. 289)\

Lumières Dans la Nuit: Mystérieux Objets Célestes et Problèmes Connexes. No. 99 (April 1969) through No. 235-236 (January/February 1984)

A large sequential run, comprising altogether 136 issues (lacking nos. 100, 142, and 199, two copies of no. 163), most issues 27 pp., of the scarce and long-running French review of ufology under the editorial direction of Raymond Veillith, containing essays and editorials on UFOs, meterology, astronomy and cosmology, extraterrestrial life, symbolism, craft landings, mysterious phenomena, anthropology, and other related topics. Illustrated throughout with drawings, diagrams, and photographs. 8vo. Orig. illus. wrpps, overall very good, minor scattered bumping. Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, France, 1969-1984. A fascinating look at a popular and strongly contested field of pseudoscience, from a magazine which began publication in 1958 and is still published today. Over its entire run, Lumieres Dans la Nuit has had only three editors. The journal was originally founded by a study group devoted to the less clearly delineated study of "mysterious celestial objects". Incredibly scarce; as of December 2015, WorldCat locates only one institutional holding in North America, although the extent of the holding is unknown.

        A Domestic Animal.

London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1969 - Octavo. Original orange boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled, small mark to foot of rear board; an excellent copy in the bright jacket. First edition, first printing, the so-called "suppressed" edition. This edition was withdrawn before publication, rewritten, and reissued in 1970, as a result of a libel case involving the former Labour MP, and King's erstwhile friend, Tom Skeffington-Lodge. With a TLS from the author to Tom Driberg, journalist and MP, sending him the book and flippantly mentioning the libel action threatened by Skeffington-Lodge, who is referred to here as T.C. Radcliffe-Hall. He laments the unpleasantness but admits, "I suppose it was naughty of me." King had put into the book a scene based on Skeffington-Lodge's bid for a peerage. After writing to senior figures in the Labour Party, urging them to intercede on his behalf, Skeffington-Lodge received a one-line reply from Lord Attlee, expressing the hope that he would "get what he deserved"; Skeffington-Lodge took this at face value and read it aloud at a dinner party at which King was present. King then put this verbatim into A Domestic Animal, taking the precaution of disguising his original source as a female character named Dame Winifred Harcourt. Also present is a subsequent signed note from King imploring Driberg and other owners of advance copies to destroy them "without fail or return to me for destruction". The request has an unrelated but entertaining jotting by Driberg on the back. [Attributes: First Edition]

Saint-Paul, France: Foundation Maeght, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Inscribed with enormous wit and affection to satiric artist and close friend Robert Osborn by Calder using a Calder quote excerpted from the book that is printed on ffe verso. The quote reads "One of the problems/ confronting me is to get enough/ free time to work/ and not to go around talking about it." Calder has taken the first line and inserted in bold blue ink a different completion of the line (in italics here) so that it reads "One of the problems is Bob Osborn('s) a very nice guy in the long run. Sandy"." With a postcard picturing three of Calder's sculptures in the outdoor collection of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, from Calder to Robert and Elodie dated by him July 13, 1987, postmarked from Denmark, in which Calder reports on how touring is like a tiring "campaign" ("oh to be 60 again!") and proclaims "the glorious Calders are by far the best at this fine museum." Alexander Calder, known to his friends since childhood as 'Sandy', was an American artist best known for his mobile sculptures. Championed by the Museum of Modern Art, his distinctive mobiles hang permanently there as well as premier institutions like the DC National Gallery. Commissioned to build sculptures and paint murals in several of Marcel Breuer's houses built in Litchfield County, CT. Calder, who lived in Roxbury in that county, Calder had many friends in the artistic community there, Robert Osborn and his wife Eloise being among the closest.
