Patience Abbe collection of Three signed association copies of first editions books, ASL and B&W photo

1969. . • Three signed association copies of first editions in slightly chipped jackets of Patience, Richard, and John Abbe's three books: - Around the World in Eleven Years (New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1936), signed inscription, 3 February 1969, by Patience Abbe to François Leydet, her second husband and the author of the Sierra Club Books; - Of All Places (New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1937), signed by all three children for Cecil B. De Mille, with his bookplate; - No Place Like Home (New York: Julian Messner, 1940), signed by all three children for Cecil B. De Mille, with his bookplate. • ALS to Henry Roe (Librarian at St. Thomas Public Library, Ont.), written in pencil, 19 June 1936, with envelope, thanking him for his comments about Around the World in Eleven Years. "I would like to come up to Canada in the Winter time to see the dogs pulling the sleighs…. I would like to see the Canadein Mountend so maby papa will drive us down there. If we come I will come and see you." With a b&w photo of Richard, John and Patience Abbe. Books and documents housed in a blue cloth pictorial clamshell box. Patience Abbe (1924-2012) was only 11 when the memoir she wrote with her two brothers, "Around the World in Eleven Years," climbed onto the bestseller lists for grown-ups in 1936. As the siblings recounted their nomadic childhood in Europe and subsequent move to America, their exuberant behavior and unaffected observations charmed readers. Patience observed that a woman with children could always get a seat on a Paris bus "no matter how first the others were." Her career as an author peaked at age 15 after the young globe-trotters published two more books. They recounted their adventures living in Hollywood in "Of All Places!" and documented a trip to prewar Europe and life on their Colorado ranch in "No Place Like Home." Patience's first husband was Brendan O'Mahoney, with whom she had two daughters, Catherine and Shelley, before the marriage ended in divorce in 1954. She later married Francois Leydet, author, whose books included the Sierra Club books "The Last Redwoods" and, with David Brower, "Time and the River Flowing." Patience helped to edit those Sierra Club Books. Abbe died March 17 of natural causes in Redding, her family announced. She was 87. She was born July 22, 1924, in Paris to American expatriates, noted photographer James Abbe and his wife, Polly, a former Ziegfeld girl. This collection is on consignment with LDRB.

Title page, divisional titles and initial letters printed in bisque. An excellent copy. First and limited Dalí edition, number XII of 200 copies, signed by Dali at the foot of the frontispiece and on the title page. "The artist Salvador Dalí, famous for his surreal images of melting clocks and barren landscapes, at first glance might not seem to have much in common with a retiring Victorian English don who wrote children's books. But actually, Dalí and Carroll had much in common: both men were ardent explorers of dreams and the imagination, attempting in their art to show the fertile pathways to the unconscious. This artistic temperament might explain why, in his sixties, Dalí created twelve surreal illustrations - one for each chapter - for Alice in Wonderland. Because he required a rich, lush palette for his painted drawings, Dalí turned to the oldest process for reproducing photographic images for printing: heliogravure. Similar to engraving, the method is time consuming and costly. Each heliogravure is printed by hand and considered an original" (Catherine Nichols, Alice's Wonderland: a Visual Journey through Lewis Carroll's Mad, Mad World, 2014, p. 28). One of the most extraordinary and beautiful editions of Alice.

Biological Journal of the Linnean Society.

8vo. 103 volumes in more than 400 parts, plus indices for all volumes except 1-3, 17, 72, 73; original publisher's paper wrappers; Volume 10, Number 4 signed by the editor R.J. Berry; very slight browning to some of the earlier volumes, otherwise fine. A complete run of this august and important publication from the library of its former editor R.J. Berry. Berry, Emeritus Professor of Genetics at University College London, has had a long and distinguished career as an academic. He has written some of the most sought after volumes in the New Naturalist series, including The Natural History of Orkney and The Natural History of Shetland, as well as numerous academic papers and books. As a practising Christian he is also interested in the ramifications of Darwinism upon religious belief, and has written a number of works in support of the idea of evolutionary creationism, including God's Book of Works: The Nature and Theology of Nature, the text of his 1997-8 Glasgow Gifford Lectures. The Journal is the oldest biological journal in the world, having evolved out of the Linnean Society's Transactions in 1791. It was the only dedicated biological journal for many years and was the first organ to publish Darwin and Wallace's theories of natural selection in 1858. It was relaunched in a new format in 1969 and it is a complete run of the modern form of the Journal that is presented here. R.J. Berry's profound interest in genetics and evolution led him to fix decisively the direction of the Biological Journal. Berry made clear the distinctions between the Biological Journal and the Linnean Society's parallel Botanical and Zoological journals in a flier issued upon his becoming editor: "the Zoological and Botanical Journals have a proper and continuing morphological and taxonomic basis; it is our understanding and intention that the Biological journal should have a special emphasis on organic evolution in the broadest sense - from observation and theory to experiment and inference, including history and conservation. This will be firm editorial policy in the future". He assumed the editorship in September 1978 (Volume 10, Number 3) and carried on until April 1990 (Volume 39, Number 4), during which time the journal adopted the subtitle and focus that it has maintained to this day as 'A Journal of Evolution' (starting with Volume 33, Number 1). He has continued as an associate editor since stepping down. The breadth and depth of the learning displayed in these volumes is too great to be discussed in detail here; each issue contains valuable articles, arguments and controversies. It is worth highlighting a couple of issues, though, which bring the focus of the Journal on to Charles Darwin, the father of the evolutionary movement. Volume 17, Number 1 (February 1982) is devoted to commemorating the centenary of Darwin's death and shows the stamp of Berry's Christian perspective by including an article by the Bishop of Salisbury on the impact of evolutionary science on our understanding of Man's place in nature. Other pieces include a biographical article by R.B. Freeman, Darwin's bibliographer, J.R. Moore on the controversy surrounding Darwin's interment in Westminster Abbey and a prefatory paper by Berry himself. Volume 21, Numbers 1 & 2 (January/February 1984, published in one part) are devoted to the Galapagos Islands. Frank J. Sulloway contributes a piece on Darwin and the Galapagos, while the other articles show how modern naturalists have built on Darwin's work in the region. This is just a small glimpse into the range of expertise and approach displayed in this set of volumes. It represents the most intellectually rigorous and exhaustive body of work in evolutionary science over the last forty years and stands as a tribute to the vision of the editor from whose collection it has come.

Hurt by the worldwide economic depression that began in 1929, and by shortages during World War II, it diversified into seals for motors made first of leather and later of artificial rubber (the Simmerring, named for an engineer called Walther Simmer), which led to fabrics and to cleaning fabrics and tools when it was noted that the company's cleaning ladies were using discarded scraps of the experimental fabrics. Vileda (from German: wie Leder, "like leather") window-cleaning cloths were first marketed in 1948. In the mid-1990s the company reorganized with a "highly decentralized organizational structure": it has 16 divisions or areas of business incorporating 430 independent units. Three-quarters of its business is as a supplier to other companies. In 2004 Freudenberg had employees in 43 countries. Recently it has focused attention on markets in China and Japan; for example, it provided the floor coverings for the Shanghai Metro stations. In 2002 the company closed its last leather tannery, marking the effective end of the leather industry in Germany. However, today Vileda is a market leader in Europe. All German cars contain parts made by another Freudenberg subsidiary, and German-made outdoor clothing contains fibers made by yet another.[4] Almost all major airports have flooring made by another Freudenberg subsidiary. In 2015 the group was a 7,5 billion euro business with more than 40,000 employees, approximately 11,000 in Germany. Revenues rose from 7 billion euros in 2014 to 7.572 billion in 2015. Where is your Vortex? London: The Egoist Ltd, 1919. PROVENANCE: The estate of R.B. Kitaj, via Peter Howard, Serendipity Books, with all bearing his price coding ("LEM") and most additionally annotated "In Our Time." Inspired by Walter Benjamin's classic 1931 essay "Unpacking My Library," acclaimed British artist Kitaj set out in 1969 (Benjamin's essay had been published in English for the first time just the year before) to photograph a selection of book covers from his library for a portfolio of color screen-prints entitled IN OUR TIME: Covers For A Small Library After the Life for the Most Part. The completed portfolio contained 50 covers and was issued in 1969 in a signed edition of 150 copies by Marlborough AG Schellenberg. Here offered are 12 of the actual books from Kitaj's library used in creating this work. The books offer a fascinating opportunity to investigate questions of representation and materiality, and embody something of the physical life they have endured over the 40+ years since they were last documented. Furthermore, at least several provide a glimpse at Kitaj's working methods for this series. One title (PLAGUE) shows evidence of having been touched up in the print. In another (MENSCHEN DER ZEIT), the artist completely altered the cover photograph, substituting an image of German actor Paul Wegener later in the same book for the original cover image. The page with Wegener has also been flagged with a scrap bookmark and a penned line appears on that page. Books were an enormous influence on Kitaj's art. His library in many ways was his studio ("For me, books are what trees are for the landscape painter") and in IN OUR TIME "Kitaj transcends the idea of the physicality of the book. By enlarging the covers he gives the chosen volumes a monumental presence, reinforcing the subjects within the covers with a new and powerful resonance" (Ramkalawon, KITAJ PRINTS: A Catalogue Raisonné). As The Independent (London) said in their 2007 obituary: "[Kitaj's] love of books connects inextricably with his sense of the importance of the transmission of knowledge and thought, through time, and with his awareness of the fragility of such transmission in any era of pers [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

(MAKI, HAKU). Brannen, Noah & William Elliott. FESTIVE WINE: ANCIENT JAPANESE POEMS FROM THE KINKAFU - DELUXE LIMITED SIGNED SLIPCASED EDITION WITH TWENTY-ONE ORIGINAL SIGNED AND NUMBERED WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY HANA MAKI . New York & Tokyo: Walker and Company & John Weatherhill, Inc., 1969. First Edition 1/150 Deluxe. 4to. 1/4 Leather Over Boards in Box. Illustrated Book. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 78pp, 21 illustrations in woodcut. Text in English. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. With a bibliography. Published in 1969, this is Noah Brannen and William Elliott's significant translation of the "Kinkafu" scroll - a unique transcription of twenty-one ancient Japanese song-poems that was rediscovered in 1924 in the collection of rare books and manuscripts belonging to Prince Konoe that were sent to the Kyoto University Library for safe-keeping following the devastating earthquake and fires of 1923. This spectacular example of Post-War Japanese bookmaking contains English language typographic transcriptions of each of the twenty-one poems along with two scholarly essays on the form. These are printed by letterpress on handmade kyokushi paper and bound in gold foil-stamped white one-quarter top-grain goatskin over hemp-covered boards and housed in a cedar slipcase. The piece de resistance however is the twenty-one SIGNED AND NUMBERED color woodcuts commissioned from the noted late sosaku hanga artist Haku Maki that are matted and face each poem. A bright, well-preserved example of the exceedingly uncommon "enlarged, deluxe format first English language edition" that is limited to one hundred and fifty NUMBERED (61/150) copies SIGNED AND STAMPED by Haku Maki on the rear colophon as issued showing a few minor nicks, slight wear, and some mild discoloration to the white leather spine. It has been priced accordingly.
